When you're hot, you need to make the most of it!
And that's exactly what Olympic star Michael Phelps is doing.
He's already got a multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Kelloggs. Though that's causing some backlash.
But, onto the new money generators.
Phelps will soon be writing a book. Yes, he'll be selling the story behind his historic wins of eight gold medals.
And the book will come out just in time for the holidays this December.
That's quick!
The book, Built to Succeed, will detail his trainings and competitions.
It'll also get a bit more personal by going into his past and being raised by a single mother. He'll also mention how he copes with his attention-deficit disorder.
Phelps is set for life.
Who knew swimming could be SO profitable???

ONLY if he manages his money correctly, I have seen people with hundreds of millions of dollars *cough*MikeTyson*cough* and go through it so quickly and end up flat broke, its so sad.

good for him! he's a real talent & i'd rather see him making money off of bringing attention to a highly unregarded sport rather than see celebrities making $14 mill for appearing in a movie and living for free on location.
He already has a book out that talks about those things - covering from athens to his car crash or something, talking about his childhood and all that. How many times will he need to cover that?

I don't understand why people are so upset about Phelps promoting an unhealthier cereal while the biggest sponsor of the olympics is McDonalds. What the hell?!

hmm I hope it's not totally stupid given the short time period they're writing it…but I think it's really cool. I personally would love to know what he's thinking and what his main source of inspiration was behind this..and how he did it, how much training it took, and if he plans to just say fuck it and retire now that he holds a million world records! He's a pretty cool inspiration. And as far as hawking sugary cereals..as long as you work your ass off it's okay to eat whatever, I say!

Woohoo! I think its lovely that he is making himself known. I think its well established that his love is swimming. It's something he enjoys. He seems like such a kindhearted person and I hope and pray that he treads the water very carefully in the whole "celebrity" realm. He's good looking, successful, and very talented. I wish him the very best!
Young professional athletes like Phelps don't "write" their own books - he will have a co-author who will do all of the actual writing. Sometimes on the cover it will say something like "by Michael Phelps as told to John Smith".

Because Phelps has been a paid pro athlete since he was around 16 years old, it's likely that his management company (Octagon) has had a writer sketching out the first few chapters. That way, they will only need to write and edit the Beijing stuff before the end of this year.
Re: pineapple express – Perez, Pineapple Express has a point here. Even if cheating by the Omega official cannt be proven without a 100% doubt, it WAS a huge huge conflict of interest to have a Phelps sponsor in charge of the timing. Even if Omega paid millions of dollars to be the official timekeeper of the entire Olympics, they should have refused to work on any of Phelps's races and instead allowed a neutral official do the timing (the way a judge does when he or she knows one of the defendants in a court case).

At the very least, new rules should be put in place to make sure this doesn't happen in London in 2012 - especially if Phelps comes back for those Olympics!
