Yeah!!! Ya'll suck, TN!!! And you can have J-Timberfuck back, while you're at it!

  2. 2

If you can't feed them, don't breed them. Simple enough.

  3. 3

    so terrible

  4. 4

WTF are they doing to raise the mortality rate for these babies?

  5. 5

omg thats one of the saddest things ive ever heard. perez i wish tehre was a donation link for this!

  6. 6

Read the entire article next time Perez. It is talking about efforts to stop the infant mortality and how they are trying to change it.

  7. 7

    oh this is so sad

  8. 8

its called population control….Im sorry..was that ignunt of me?

  9. 9

if you put your hoo hoo dilly in a woochacha then you might make a baby. duh!! don't need much more than a 3rd grade education to figure that shit out

  10. 10

I watched the video and read it. I think people who do not take the time to do should not comment.

  11. 11

That is just heartbreaking. I don't know what types of public aid is available in TN…but, here, in Wisconsin…we have what is known as BadgerCare Plus. It gives the financially disadvantaged pregnancy and well-baby care and services.
If TN doesn't have something like that now…I hope that they get it soon. Before more innocent 'little ones' die.

  12. 12

It has nothing to do with Tennessee or Memphis. It has to do with the poor blacks that continue to breed unabated. Once they breed, the 'baby mamas' don't seek out proper pre-natal care and they continue whatever dipshit lifestyle that got them into the circumstance in the first place.
How about some education? Or forced birth control until they can prove that they are responsible enough to take care of another life…

  13. 13

    Andy27 - you suck
Born and raised in SHelby County, TN (and it is not mostly rural at all). The Memphis city govt is corrupt.
RutRoe you are absolutely correct. These babies and being born into the most horrible of conditions and as horrible as this sounds (I know I will get crap for saying this) these mothers have no business having babies. Saw an obit in paper today for a 30 yr old mother of 7 children. I guarentee that tax payers are paying for every cent of that family.

    14

    HEY!
    Don't hate on TN!
It's not our faults that these stupid women and breeding
babies they cant take care of.
This puts a bad name out for Tennessee, Shelby Co. in general.
Memphis isn't as bad (or ghetto) as the media perceives it it be.
By the way, the people who should be ashamed of themselves can't afford internet, much less computers- so you are preaching to the choir, Perez.

  15. 15

    Re: uradope
    EXACTLY!!!!

  16. 16

I'm from Tennessee, but not from Memphis. Something does need to be done about this. I do have to say that Tennessee doesn't have the best health care, that's for sure.

  17. 17

    Re: DIJordan

We have a state plan called TennCare that covers many people who are otherwise uninsurable, but not all. This automatically covers uninsured mothers during their pregnancy until the child is one year old. Also, we have TennderCare, which covers the child until one year of age. At that point, regular TennCare does take over and will insure an otherwise uninsured child until their eighteenth birthday, or until they can get their own insurance otherwise.

Still, Shelby County is a very poor area, but steps are being made to combat this.

  18. 18

MAYBE BRAD AND ANGIE WILL HELP

  19. 19

    Re: Bunnyness

I meant to add that I don't think the state should be responsible fully for these things, but they are trying. It's difficult when you live in the Bible belt and people don't believe in sex ed and the like.

  20. 20

    .
they need to make bc pills as easy to get as their smokes!

  21. 21

This is really sad, and being a person from TN, I think that its aweful that this is the first time im hearing this.. PLEASE Perez put Dear Shelbyville, TN… we are not all like this!!!

  22. 22

I live in tn and go to Memphis several times a year and as sad as this is it is not so much the "city" or "hospitals" at fault as it is the people having babies. They are drug addicts & very uneducated people. They do not know how to take care of themselves much less a baby in utero. My husband and I were on our way back from Ole Miss and we could not tell you how many billboards read "need a paternity test call here" or "Are you the daddy call her to set up an appointment to find out". With that all over the lower parts of town what do you expect. the majority having the babies are the ones putting the baby at risk. Stop feeling sorry for them when they are the ones causing the unthinkable!

  23. 23

Re: uradope – Or how about you shut up and stop being racist asshole! They are plenty of crackhead white people who do the same! It's not the childrens fault either! None of us have a say in being born in the first place let alone who are parents are.

  24. 24

Why are you blaming Tennessee? You should be blaming the people HAVING those babies who are too young with no job or money to take care of them! Babies are not handbags, you don't get one just because they'd look cute on your arm. Teenagers all want to have sex and more sex but they're too stupid to think of the consequences and unfortunately the innocent suffer for it.

  25. 25

Re: Erica Bee – what and give them more money for them to continue being idiots!!!!

  26. 26

damn, this article was kind of disturbing. It's not surprising though, since a big part of the problem is lack of access to resources and adequate healthcare/education.

Thank God someone is calling attention to this I guess. At least people can begin to look at the area and make some kind of strategy to remedy the situation.

  27. 27

Re: smh@ppl – lets do the math! It not about race it's statistics!!

  28. 28

Perez, why don't you use your blog to help people for once? If you think this sucks, get up off your ass and do something to help out. You show your ignorance by hiding behind your computer and not making an effort to better the situation.

  29. 29

I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE FEELING SORRY FOR THOSE WHO ARE TO LAZY TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. 30

ahhaha i was born in shelby county. But definately survived!

  31. 31

Why do you think this is happening??
    ,
Because 20 years ago, the SAME THING was happening - but some of the babies survived to be pulling the same shit NOW.
    .
Bible belt, my ASS! It's called INFANTICIDE. If you're too stupid to understand the ABCs of mother nature and your own body, then you have NO BUSINESS birthing babies

  32. 32

This breaks my heart, and honestly I get a little angry at these mother's.
I don't know why, except that I have had a full term still birth.
I did everything right, all prenatal care.
The cord wrapped around her neck, and I hurt to this day.
    These poor babies….

  33. 33

This isn't really new. I had to do research for a project in college on Memphis, TN approximately two years ago and Shelby Co. still had the highest mortality rate then, as well.

  34. 34

why the FUCK do you care about those babies when you're voting for a dude that likes partial birth abortions???

    you can't say shit perez!!!

  35. 35

I am also from Shelby County, TN and it is not rural at all. It is sad how different the city of Memphis is than how it is interpreted in rap and drug movies and unfortunately news like this. I love living in Memphis and this news is sad, but its the people who have the control not the city.

  36. 36

How can people be pro-life and let stuff like this happen. This is terrible and sad that this happens.

  37. 37

Re: antiliberalKNS – Very good point!

The state of medical care in this country is shameful. We are fast becoming a Third World nation.

  40. 40

    Re: smh@ppl

    Truth hurts, huh?
It has nothing to do with me being a racist, but everything to do with me being a realist. If you want to shell out more of your tax dollars to help these dumbasses, then have at it. Personally, I'm tired of paying for someone else's kids…and groceries…and medical care…and housing…and 20" rims…and cell phones…and drugs…shall I go on? Oh, and the way welfare works is 'more kids=more money from the gub'ment!
The babies have no choice, but the woman should be a bit more prudent about when she decides to lay on her back. The black man surely isn't going to say NO!

  41. 41

Re: ChrisInKy – This breaks my heart, and honestly I get a little angry at these mother's.
I don't know why, except that I have had a full term still birth.
I did everything right, all prenatal care.
The cord wrapped around her neck, and I hurt to this day.
    These poor babies….

My deepest, sincerest, condolences to you and your family.
I agree with you….it IS easy and almost 'justified' to get angry with the mothers (and also the fathers and rest of the family) when there ARE services available to the uneducated and poor, in TN. (thanks, Bunnyness, for that bit of info…your TennCare and TennderCare, sounds very similar to BadgerCare).
When there are many, many parents who would do anything, in the world, to have a child…it is deplorable and unforgivable to have the most innocent suffer at the hands of ignorance.

    You Bastards!

  48. 48

    Re: DIJordan
    Thank you, DJ Jordan.
It's been 3 1/2 years now, but after reading an article like this the pain rears it's ugly head again!

  49. 49

Contrary to what some of the commentators believe, and stated,……being poor, uneducated, sexually promiscuous and ambivalent to their childs' well-being, is NOT strictly limited to race, color or creed.
I have gone to school, socialized and 'partied' with caucasian girls who were just as negligent to their unborn child….as any other non-caucasian girl.
Quoting from the story…."The babies at risk? They are mostly from parts of town that are poor and black."
'MOSTLY FROM PARTS OF TOWN THAT ARE POOR AND BLACK', does NOT mean that ALL of those poor babies were born unto black families. Believe it or not….there ARE some WHITE mommy's who killed their children by ignorance and negligence, also.
BTW….Tennessee does not hold the monopoly on teen pregnancy and infant mortality rates. Do some research….you may be a bit surprised at what you find out about YOUR state, County, City…and even how infant mortality rates compare between COUNTRIES.

  50. 50

Re: ChrisInKy – I can only imagine what you are going through. If you ever need/want to talk, you can find me here…or, contact me at anndz1 at the 'smiley face'.

  51. 51

I think it is sad to see some people saying these "black girls shouldn't breed," that is so horrifying to think someone thinks like that and just completely racist. I have lived in shelby county for about 7 years now one it is an issue amongst african americans primarily because the actuall city of memphis is about 80 percent black… two this is a not a rural area piperton county maybe west memphis arkansas, but memphis… we are also not as poor and ghetto as everyone says certain areas yes, but hello fedex east memphis, germantown and collierville are some of the richest areas in the nation… having said that we do have programs such as tenncare and many churches who outreach to those in need. we are doing the best with what we have a corrupt government. the city is slowly changing for the better. it is a vicious circle those who are poor live in terrible ghettos and it just a continuous circle we need to break. insulting our state before you know the facts is sad and not respectable. i have lived in midtown and then downtown for sometime, we are developing rapidly, rich culturally, historically, and musically. dont run your mouth unless you know what is really going on…

  52. 52

Wow, I live in another part of TN, but I had no idea this was happening. I guess this shows that it isn't just kids in third world countries that need our help.

  53. 53

Re: pinkstilettokk – VERY well put.
Most people don't understand that what took YEARS, possibly decades and centuries, to undermine (such as lack of education, insurance and tolerance), can NOT be rectified in mere hours or days. It will take the cooperation, and understanding, to make a government, city council and town/city citizens to make positive changes happen. And, sometimes (unfortunately), it takes years for those changes to happen.

  54. 54

Re: Bunnyness – If I may ask, Bunnyness….is the school system to blame, for the lack of sex ed? Or is it due to be situated in the 'bible belt'?
What do the Church elders have to say about the 'infant mortality rate', among their parishioners?
I am not trying to be snide or sarcastic…I am just trying to learn, and there is no better way than to ask someone from that area. Any, and all, insight is greatly appreciated.

  55. 55

for some reason this doesnt surprise me and its sad cause i live here. honestly i expected it to be mothers leaving their babies in hot ass cars while they shop and shit. trust me we're all not idiots. there are just some dumb asses in this world

  56. 56

and those of you that say dumb shit like black girls shouldn have babies, im sorry your so ignorant. maybe your mom shouldn have been on coke when she had you

  57. 57

You lead in is misleading…..the article clearing indicates that this rate is in Shelby County. Its a HORRIBLE situation but don't assume its like that all over TN…and Andy27,you are a dumbfuck.

  58. 58

The big problem is the religious stigma surrounding sex education in Tennessee. (I was raised in Nashville and went to school in Knoxville) Everyone's too busy preaching abstinence and refusing to let school districts hand out condoms and discuss Planned Parenthood, abortions, the morning after pill, etc. I totally agree - if you can't feed 'em… use a condom.

Three of the ten most polluted cities (air) are also in Tennessee, Memphis being one of them. Doesn't help.

  59. 59

People have been taking care of babies since the begining of time! What the hell is TN's problem?

  60. 60

Re: uradope – Amen!!!! Maybe if King Willie would do something beside worrying about "Shaking off the haters" we might not be featured on every episode of 20/20 at the top of the list for bad cities to live in!!!

  61. 61

WTF PEREZ. I'm from Nashville and I lived in Memphis (well, Collierville) for YEARS. I'm 19 and I have to say it's people like YOU who give TN such a bad reputation. It's not the state's fault that girls keep getting knocked up. THINK before you write something that degrades a whole state and area, in general. DUMBASS.

Memphis has LOADS of things to offer. Maybe if you actually visited before posting shit you would know that.

  62. 62

Re: ChrisInKy – thatz very sad….
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I think that nothing would be worze than that,,,
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I feel so bad for you…my aunt lost 6 babies
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
    but not stillborn…thatz worze….\
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  63. 63

Re: Dmf2w – You obviously haven't been through memphis if you don't think its ghetto. I've traveled through memphis every weekend for the past month and have nearly gotten robbed twice. There are only certain areas that are okay.

I saw parts of the show tonight and it really makes me sad. I don't believe P is making TNs rep bad, not even 20/20 for airing that you need to blame the people for not trying to educate the younger generations about the importantance of abstinence and safe sex practices. Without knowledge it's going to continue to happen. As well TN needs to establish a good free prenatal care system. I love that AR (where i'm from) has medicaid and wic so that if I need help I can get it for free.
It just breaks my heart so many babies are dying being someone who's trying to have a baby now. Something that precious doesn't need to be taken for granted and I don't think anyone has shit to say about that because thats what we all were.

  64. 64

saying that you haven't been to memphis cause i live here and like any major metropolitan area there are ghettos… midtown has a ton of money as well as downtown east memphis and the burbs i dont know where the hell you drive binghamptom airways orange mound. well i have been robbed twice at gun point and i know i shouldnt have been where i was, anyone who comes here would realize we are a beautiful city that is growing and changing for the better…. tennessee also has wic and foodstamps welfare yada yada yada thats why so many folkds from mississippi try and use are healthcare system as well as arkansas. well i cant stand ignorant people… i love this city and while the housing market is downturning ours is actually going up especially downtown. once again EVERY major city has ghettos, it makes me sick that people are so judgemental we have outreach programs and i repeat are still progressing since we are 8 years behind economically, but let me tell arkansas and mississippi are right there with us if not farther behind. change takes time and king willie need to be rid of for change…

  65. 65

Wow, Andy 27 and Abercory, you guys are real professors arent ya? I can almost smell the Drakar Noir scented ignorance on you. And Uradope? My God, your ignorance is almost pathalogic. If any mortality rate should be increasing it should be of the sloped-foreheaded, knuckle dragging, feces factory likes of you. If ANY genes need to be removed from the gene pool, its yours. ANYONE who thinks that this problem has to do with race, geographic location, or any other objective point such as those need to be educated like you have so eloquently suggested for this awful, disgraceful problem that is plaguing my city.

  66. 66

What some of these people have said is exactly right. the media doesnt give Memphis its bad name the city earned that all by its self. For those of you retards that live in Memphis & say its not Ghetto, crawl out from under your rock & take a good look around. Sure there are nice areas but go 2 blocks either way & you run into crack houses & ghetto thugs hanging out in the streets being a menace. These are the same uneducated fucks that are getting knocked up. They don't have the sense to use any kind of protection not to mention that having another baby means an increase in their food stamps & welfare checks. Some of you mention education & public programs, problem is you have to get the ghetto fucks to go the school to educate them, or to take some interest in helping themselves. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN !! The programs in place now do nothing but encourage this sort of behavior & if by chance one of these dumbfucks does make a responsible decision & try to get an education & better themselves, BAM they're immediately cut off from the welfare system before they ever have a chance, throwing them back in the bad situation where they started. MEMPHIS needs to clean up its act as a whole, Until the ENTIRE mentality of that city changes things will always be the same.

  67. 67

Re: Narcissistic Bitch – To be fair….EVERY town/city has their good and bad areas. Hell, I have been to some of the wealthiest parts of the US….including the elite of California, and Illinois' renowned 'north shore'…and, even those areas have 'less desirable' sections.
BTW…I went to school, and was taught in the same classrooms, with some girls who became pregnant, before graduation rolled around. They were taught the exact same things, that I was….including the mandatory sex ed class. Do the teachers, and lessons, reach EVERY student in the exact same way? Apparently not. But, that is up to the 'recipient'…not the 'giver'.
Also, some of my classmates, that became pregnant…you would be surprised at how many INTENTIONALLY did so….in order to get away from their abusive and/or pedophile grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins, etc.
Not to mention, that some of them did it to get away from their alcoholic, physically abusive mothers.
To be a fly on the wall, in order to find out why some people do/say what they do, huh?

  68. Saka says – reply to this

    68

    too many babies…wtf ppl?

  69. 69

Re: Narcissistic Bitch – no you crawl from under your bed and realize that steps have been implemented to change this and also south and north memphis are ghetto not most of midtown downtown and east memphis so get with it… im sick of people insulting are city… it gets ridiculous. anyone been to the ghettos of houston chicago LA NY yeah I rest my case. we are a fabulous city and we are trying for change and it has started but change does not happen over night

  70. 70

omg that is so sad! =( frankly, if babies keep dying then use a condom when u have sex! that way there will be less babies

  71. 71

Hey! I'm from TN, and I know that not all mothers are like that. My mom isn't, and neither are the arents of most of the people i know. Every area has its problems, and parents who dont deserve children.

  72. 72

Re: pinkstilettokk – I can't agree with you more. Regardless if you live in a small town, or a big city (I was born, and raised in Chicago, until I was about 24yo….and, I now reside in a small town with about 2,500 people)….there are ALWAYS going to be the 'fashionable' or 'well-to-do' section and the 'poorer' or 'welfare' section.
There is only one way to be rid of the 'classification' or prejudice. For ALL of the citizens of the town, or city, to stop referring to it. Until then, it will never happen.

  73. 73

OMG This is sad and disgusting. Where are the Public Health Nurses? Do Your Fucking Jobs!!

  74. 74

i'm currently enrolled in a memphis city school && in my years in middle school (yes, middle school) and high school [approx. 6 years TOTAL] i've seen at least 10 pregnant teen girls my age && younger. I actually got a chance to see that documentary ("Babyland") and it broke my heart…seeing those babies having to be buried before life even starts. Also, on that documentary they made an EXCELLENT point stating that most of the babies that are part of that immortality rate, are being born to mothers who are way more underpriviliged than you & I. Another point, the lack a parental guidance. I have been lucky enough to be raised by parents who care and make an attempt to make sure i'm not "just another statistic," while across town in south & north memphis some teenagers are forced to raise and guide themselves, thus, making bad choices. Just my opinion as a high school junior…i guess!

  75. 75

Re: scbeauti – Bravo!!! For speaking your mind!!

As I wrote above You the Doctors, Nurse,Social Workers aren't doing Their jobs and should be FIRED!!!
P.S. Sorry I swore, I wouldn't have if I knew a Minor was going to read it!

  76. 76

i am 17 and have lived in mempho my whole life. we are preached abstinence, which is a stupid mistake but cannot be blamed for most of the problems. these people must know how to protect themselves, you don't need sex ed to know that. people talk about it to their friends. they live off of the taxes that my parents pay because they dont feel like getting jobs or are too addicted to drugs to get one. we pay tons of taxes for them to go to school, and they dont even try. the main problem here is that these girls are dumb and the guys are pushy. if you dont have enough money for the present size of your family to live, dont have sex! its that easy.it's their fault. if they are stupid enough to not think about the results their actions might have then they deserve the consequences. sex makes babies, it's that easy. it just pisses me off that these families have like 30 kids with drug addicted mothers who have no idea who the fathers are because they have sex with so many guys. i personally dont think its a race issue. im sure plenty of white people and mexicans are involved in the retardation. i have no sympathy but to the baby. grow a brain and keep it in your pants for 10 minutes.

  77. 77

    Re: Narcissistic Bitch

Wow, I never thought I would ever use this word, but you are an ignorant, callous cunt. "Retards"…wow, classy. I dont know if logic has ever entered into your vacuous thought processes, but you go after the cause not the effect. Eliminating the effect does nothing to the cause. The fact you are obviously racist doesnt help the fact that your ideas are crap as well. Shut up.

  78. 78

My name is shelby. EVERYTHING BAD HAPPENS IN CITIES WITH THE NAME SHELBY IN IT!

    poor little babies.
    =[
cant we put like social workers there or something?

  79. 79

Re: scbeautiRe: jenny91 – Thank you, or your comments. First hand knowledge, from someone in the area of discussion, is greatly appreciated…if only by me.
May I ask, the both of you,…..why is it that only the pregnant, and underage, mothers getting the 'bad rap'? Why aren't the 'sperm donors' getting chastised? Why are the 'dumb girls' being penalized more than the 'pushy guys', Jenny91?
Yes, scbeauti, 'parental guidance' is a marvelous thing….but, unless 'mental deficiency' is a deciding factor…those engaging in sex (MALE AND FEMALE) should SHARE the responsibility when the 'swimmer meets, and penetrates, the egg'.
    It takes two to tango.

  80. 80

What's unacceptable is that these backwoods fucktards don't use condoms!!!

  81. 81

"i was in da sixth grade, on da honor roll and den i got pregnant…"

  82. 82

    Re: VixyBaby

shut the fuck up. You obviously have no sense, tact or anything constructive to say. You are ignorant, plain and simple. "Backwoods"? Are you fucking serious? do you even know what part of the country you are so failingly trying to lampoon and criticize? You dont know…you are dumb with a capital "B". Just shut the fuck up, your ideas smell worse than a scatlover's (which you probably are, most self-important folks with a holier-smarter-etc-than thou personality tend to lean towards scat, you are what you eat!) breath.

  83. 83

    Re: DIJordan

Fantastic questions DIJordan! Honestly, in my opinion, it's not fair that the teenage mothers have to take the "bad rap," but that's just the way society is and I don't believe it's changing any time soon. Also, with the parental guidance comment, of course everyone knows "it takes two to tango," but in my previous comment, i was basically saying that when a child/teen lacks parental involvement, they lack other information on prevention, such as: abstinence & safe sex. Imagine having to raise yourself in a troubled neighborhood, flooded with violence, crime, and death…the last thing on your mind is "abstinence" or "safe sex." Think about it!

  84. 84

    omg thats so sad
    soo terrible
