The 20 year old hottie ended host nation China's domination of the Olympic diving competition when Mitcham took home the top prize in the men's 10m platform this weekend.

In all honesty, it's great that the most defining thing about him isn't that he's gay anymore–it's that he has gold. This is actually a big step towards the rights of homosexuals in sports, so I'm really glad for him.

As an Aussie I'm pretty much cheering all our athletes but last night when Matty hit that dive, I was in tears for him. You have to feel for the Chinese guy who ballsed up his final dive, but Matt was sublime. What an unassuming nice kid who nailed his dives the way he'd been training them with so much pressure on his shoulders. All of Australia are so proud of him, as should be the whole gay community.

Not everyone has the luxury of an understanding family and community. I believe that you alone hold back the gay community from getting the respect and dignity it deserves. Yay for Matthew! Is there a picture of Lachlan anywhere on the Internet? I'd like to see the lucky guy Matthew is with. Oh, hey Perez, I know you're thrilled and all there's an "openly gay" athlete at the Olympics, but you shouldn't go around trying to out everyone you think is gay. I won't be mean to you like MadonnaBritney was, but she did make a good point there that instead of pointing out Matthew is the "only male athlete in Beijing courageous enough to be openly gay," why not simply celebrate that he's a brill diver, and that his sexuality shouldn't even be a point of discussion, ya know? There's lots of reasons gays and lesbians (and other sexual identities) prefer to keep their sexuality private, especially in the Olympics. So yeah, maybe try and refocus your "outting skills" in the direction of bringing PR to the politicans that actually support the same-gender marriages and adoption, not to mention the ongoing social stigma against GLBTs in uber-conservative USA. So yeah, I do applaud Matthew that he was "courageous" enough to simply say, "I'm bringing my partner of 2 years, Lachlan, to the Olympics" and not make a fuss about it. That's the way things should be, not some big media hoopla like, "OMG, he's gay, he's the only gay athlete at the Olympics, yadda, yadda, yadda." Anyway, thanks for reading my little soapbox here.
I was watching him last night, he was AMAZING!! his last dive was unbelievable and yes, like someone already said he's a great role model for the gay youth community.
DLRRe: DLR – You're missing the point with Paris's "outing skills", which comes back to what MadonnaBritney refers to as "humiliate innocent people". That a gay person would feel humiliated and ashamed to be named as such is the problem that needs to be fixed. Until more people are like Matthew above and say he's gay, what of it, keeping the fact that high-profile people are gay a big secret doesn't help anyone.
Gay youth suicide is a huge problem - two young guys in the UK in the last week alone. Obviously no one knows what went through their minds, but the "humiliation" of being gay can't have helped.
