NBC's Olympic Coverage = Homophobic?

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayAustraliasticZportzMedia Minute

NBC's got some explaining to do!

We cheered when Australia's Matthew Mitcham, the only openly male gay athlete who competed at the Beijing Games, scored Olympic gold.

However, we're jeering at NBC because - unlike their coverage of hetero athletes' relationships - the network never mentioned the Aussie's boyfriend/longtime parter during their coverage of the Mitcham story.

NBC did not mention Mitcham’s orientation, nor did they show his family and partner who were in the stands. NBC has made athletes’ significant others a part of the coverage in the past, choosing to spotlight track athlete Sanya Richards’ fiancee, a love triangle between French and Italian swimmers and Kerri Walsh’s wedding ring debacle.

What's up with that, NBC?

Gay relationships = not the same as straight ones????

OH SO THOUGHT HE WAS GAY!!! WHO CARES HE IS AN AMAZING DIVER!

  6. 6

without NBC there would not have been will & Grace

  7. 7

Andy, how does it feel to have 3 losers' screenames dedicated to you? we've got Andy28, Andy27 = shitface, and Andy27s Chin

    ps.
Im soooooo bored…please stick something in me…anywhere you like :)

  8. 8

He's so gay, and so even likes boys!

  9. 9

    homophobic assholes.

  10. 10

I was wondering about that too. Why didn't they show his family during the diving competition?

    Well, now we know…

  11. 11

What the hell has who he's screwing got to do with whether or not he's a good swimmer? I'm all for gay relationships, marriage, whatever! But does *everything* have to be about your sexuality?

    Grow up.

  12. 12

    That's messed up!

  13. 13

    Who cares????????????????????????????????????

  14. 14

I would think it was because he wasn't from the US of A.

  15. 15

Or maybe for once NBC decided that an athlete's personal life is entirely irrelevant to the sport in which he competes. I don't give a damn if he's gay, straight, bi, into livestock or whatever. It has no effect on his performance as an athlete, so why is it important?

  16. 16

    Gay relationships=Straight relationships? Apparently not.

  17. 17

    He's hot! =D

  18. 18

That sucks. I watched this guy. He had an amazing comeback.

  19. 19

NBC didn't want to dissapoint the millions of gays who would gladly form a rally and lynch his boyfriend for being involved with such a hott piece of ass….

Re: Ithica – I WHOLEHEART AGREE WITH YOU!!! I READ WHAT PEREZ SAID AND JUST ROLLED MY EYES. I GUESS PEREZ JUST WANTS TO START SOME STUPID DRAMA. DON'T WE HAVE ENOUGH DRAMA IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW.

Re: abercorey – I have a question abercorey … when you masturbate, do you call one hand Andy27 and the other bouge so you feel like you are having a threesome?

  22. 22

'Gay relationships = not the same as straight ones????'

Got that right.. One my girlfriend doesn't let me put it in her butt and two they wouldn't need "gay" as a qualifier if it was the "same" as a straight relationship.

  23. 23

After that they need to explain why the hell they showed so much indoor Volley ball . Everyone HATES volley ball… I would rather watch a dodge ball competition.

  24. 24

I only saw his "fans" in the stands one time. They were all wearing yellow wigs, or brightly colored shirts and glasses. NBC sounds a little homophobic to me! I saw plenty of backstories on the chinese athletes, french, and even a bulgarian chick.

  25. 25

The Olympics is not a platform to be used to support homosexuality you stupid idiot. I'm glad they didn't show it plus what about all of the straight gold medal winners they didn't show, he better be glad they at least showed his sorry pathetic ass.

  26. 26

unbelievable……….. always about "why doesn't anyone pay attention to me" wahhh wahh wahh…….

  27. 27

    Psha. That's terrible!

  28. 28

That is to be expected. They don't want to offend their christian viewers.

  29. 29

    thats gay! lol ;] jk
no but really thats pathetic of them!

  30. 30

It would have been nice even if he were not from the USA!

  31. 31

Re: abercorey – LoL…it IS flattering, that somehow I'd manage to steal the spot light from the article/post at hand. They can sweat my nuts all day long, it don't bother me. It just shows they have no life, if they wanna chase me all over the comment sections and say things that mean nothing to me. As you can see, I don't even reply to any of it. Clearly, they want attention — MY attention — but I'm too cocky and arrogant to give it to them. That would make their day.

  39. 39

I watched a good deal of the diving events. Someone coorect me if I'm wrong, but weren't every single one of the male divers gay? Come on, these guys wear super tight underwear, prance around on a board, spread their legs and do flips, and then shower together and hang out in a jacuzzi together…gay gay gay!

    Yums!

  42. 42

he is SO fit. anddd seems like such a sweetheart.

  43. 43

I watched the diving….they did mention his family & friends and showed tem in the stands…they didn't say "his partner so and so" they just said, "his family & friends" I believe his partner had on a brown t-shirt.
They probably didn't go into detail because it should not be a HIGH LIGHT! If we - you - want homosexuality to be an accepted, normal, everyday thing then it should be treated as such. So what if he's gay…move on!

  44. 44

Don't be lame, Perez. NBC was the same channel that ran Will & Grace for eight seasons. That was a gay show. I think that if they don't have to say that Michael Phelps is straight, why should they have to say that this guy is gay? Also, he's Australian. They probably weren't paying attention to Australia.

  47. 47

I don't understand. FIRST, you don't want to be pointed out for being gay, THEN you want to. WTF?

  48. Sammy says – reply to this

    48

OMG You guys that say he is hot, have some seriously bad taste, my godness there is not one hot thing about him. But hey I guess we do not all have the same taste!!!

  49. 49

First Thing ….. Hotness WTF good gawd ! perfection ! with an Aussie Acent to boot.
Secondly …. I know that every country covers there own athletes and gives them preference, as well as highlights performance's of Athletes from around the world. NBC has been known in past years to only showcase there own Athletes, which I am afaid is the same case here again. Weather or not it had anything to do with the guy's sexual prefernce or relationship's I guess one will never know. But it still doesn't look good on the Peacock's big wigs to not include a broader more world inclusive coverage. Ironicly there was an article about British and there out of control ways internationaly. Americans have the same world view…. Not that I don't like Americans, but lets be honest most other country's in the world if you aksed what country they hated the most USA is going to be leading the pack, maybe you don't belive this and I am sorry to be the one who has to tell you but THE WORLD DISLIKE"S USA. So if NBC did only show what they wanted to show and the country tunes in in record numbes watching then they must have done something right eh? Maybe we should look at the bigger picture as to what is wrong with USA!!
those are my thoughts not yours
    Paul

I wonder if they HAD made a big deal out of it if that would be a problem too?? Then, it would be like…why are they making a big deal out of it? People are just people & who cares who you get down with?

  52. 52

It's not "interesting" that he has a partner. A love triange is "interesting", two engaged Olympians is "interesting". Why would they bother to show someone's significant other? No one cares. Stop chasing windmills, Perez. Nothing here says "homophobe".

Andy27, like I have said before, just because you're a fag doesn't mean you have to be a pig. You give gay guys a bad name with your asinine comments.

  53. 53

PEREZ YOU ARE A DUMB ASS. I WATCHED THE OLYMPICS AND TAPED THE PARTS I MISSED AND THEY DID NOT TALK ABOUT ALL THE ATHLETES RELATIONSHIPS, YES THEY TALKED ABOUT KERI WALSH BECAUSE SHE LOST HER WEDDING RING WHILE PLAYING…YOU ARE HETEROPHOBIC SOMETIMES

  54. 54

Re: Andy27 – Of course, why would you give any of us attention when you've made your own extra aliases to give attention to … abercorey, you're gay admirer and bouge, your "fag hag". Its what every gay man needs in the real world, unfortunately you can only make them up in the PerezHilton.com forums.

  55. 55

He's hot but his bf is fug. Maybe that's why they didn't want to show him in the audience.

  56. 56

Everyone is reading too much in to this. They didn't do a piece on his family because he came out of nowhere. Nobody expected him to win, they had stories on the Chinese as they were the favourites. They probably didn't even know where his Mum or Lachlan were seated. Congratulations Matthew you did Australia proud.

    57

Maybe he didn't want everyone knowing that he smuggles sausage?

  58. 58

Well, that's NBC for you. In my opinon the BBC had much better coverage of ALL the athletes.

  59. 59

Well, I guess gays are very sensitive but this is bullshit!!!Stories of the significant others are not displayed in the Olympics unless is a moving story. I don't know about the significant others of the majority of athletes..I know about their country, sometimes about their parents, etc,e tc…

If you gays want to be equal to the rest of the community (and you should) stop winning…The world is not interested in your sex life or who do you date…Unless that person contribute in a very special way to your success your love partner is really a non important story in the Olympics. ….

Perez, a question…Why are you voting for Obama? He si against gay marriage!!!!!His posiiton and McCain position iare exactly the same…So what's the deal?

  60. 60

Gays, pssh… next thing U know they'll wanna vote!

  61. 61

When commentators mention their sexuality, then they're homophobic, and if they don't, they're homophobic! Geez, give it a rest. I am all about equality, but no matter how ppl behave there's no difference, because they'll be homophobic in your eyes. I think NBC was smart in not mentioning it, because they have to think about the ppl watching it, and by going into depth about his sexual preference and same-sex relationship would've probably lost them some ratings.

  62. 62

    As for your question Perez…Uh…..no.

  63. 63

Re: softbones – OH MY GOD YOUR AVATAR LOOKS LIKE ANDY27'S CHIN!

  64. 64

Why does his orientation even matter when it comes to his sport? Does being assfucked have anything to do with his swimming capabilities? I don't think so.

  65. 65

Once again, everything in the world must depend on who you chose to stick your dick in, at least as far as Perez is concerned. It's absolutely sickening and YOU Perez, are one of the reasons so many people stereotype gay people.
See, straight people don't look at every single news story, every single controversy, every single situation and base it on their sexual preference, but YOU continue to do so.
You seriously need some kind of therapy.
And you know, equality does not start with HIGHLIGHTING gayness, just as straight people don't make a point of saying "oh he/she is heterosexual".
    Get your shit together.

  66. 66

Re: Leona$ Gho$t – WHAT'S UP! LOVE THE NEW AVATAR! YES HIS DIVES WERE PERFECTION, I ENJOYED WATCHING HIM!

  67. 67

Re: abercorey – I AM SO BORED OF READING YOUR SICK GAY PORNOGRAPHIC COMMENTS! NEITHER OF YOU HAVE PROBABLY HAD SEX! EXCEPT WHEN PAID ON THE STREETS!

  68. 68

NBC omitting that he's gay does NOT mean or imply that the network is homophobic. On the contrary, NBC doesn't give a damn if he's gay or straight, which is a full indication that gender preference has NO bearing on athletic performance - and, in fact, has absolutely NOTHING do with athletic performance. Zero influence! So…get over it and grow up! Should everyone be informed when a gay employee is promoted in the workplace? NO…because no one gives a damn.

This guy was an unknown who won a medal. Should NBC spotlight the Belgian sprinters who won the 4×100 event? Nope. No one expected them to win; no one knows who they are; no one really cares, honestly.

  69. 69

Oh stop, Perez. Gaydom doesn't have to be promoted all over the place. I knew the man was gay when he was waving to the camera every time he made a dive. He's lucky they showed that much on TV.

I'm happy he won, he is a great diver, but obviously he's not looking to be the spokesman for gay athletes. Leave it be.

  70. 70

umm im pretty sure they didnt announce the straight people as "STRAIGHT"
so why do they have to mention that he's "GAY"???
and they didnt mentioned EVERYONES significant other either..

stop tryin to make everything a homophobic thing. jeez.

  71. 71

Also, Mitcham had stopped diving a couple of years ago due to personal/family problems. Maybe they didn't cover his story because Mitcham didn't want to "backstory" to come out. Leave the man alone!

  72. 72

If you want homosexuality to be an accepted in the world, then treat it like a normal relationship. Why should homosexual athletes get special treatment/coverage…it seems like you are asking for special rights, not equal rights. 1) The broadcast we heard was for the USA, so they are going to focus on OUR athletes, not some Austrailian guy. 2) So what if he's gay…move on! PLENTY of straight ahtletes got no coverage at all, let alone got to be on primetime coverage. They aren't saying "I'm not gay so I am not getting any coverage," so stop throwing the gay card in everyone's faces. Stop acting like he should get special treatment because he is gay…whatever! If you want homosexuality to be accepted, then get over it…special coverage because he's gay seems like special rights not equal rights. Everytime you complain it makes homosexuality seem "special" and "not normal"…if you want to be accepted by society, start acting like everyone else and sexuality really shouldn't be an issue. It honestly doesnt matter…get over it and be glad he did well in the Olympics without making drama out of nothing!

  73. 73

i usually freak at any possible hint of homophobia - that's part of the reason why i don't like you perez, because you're a terrible homophobe yourself in many ways - but i think the problem with NBC is they just simply suck at reporting big sporting events like the olympics. they have no idea where the good stories are, they don't understand the human component to sports, and are too american-centric. if you want good coverage of big sporting events where you get to hear all the great human stories, you best get satellite tv and watch The CBC (canadian broadcasting corp). their coverage is always awesome, indepth and they NEVER shy away from any kind of story. Matthew Mitcham's b/f was mentioned a couple of times during the CBC coverage of his win, and it was no big deal.

  74. 74

    Re: LettyB
    Thanks Sweetie!
I got lots of rest on my recent vacation and I'm so glad it shows!

  75. 75

perez how are you going to preach they are being homophobic when you do the very same thing by bashing people on you're site that are in the closet or better yet bashing samantha ronson.. you're such a hypocrite !!!!!

  76. 76

Re: WhoCares – thank god you're not a sports journalist, lol. it's precisely the unknowns who make huge wins that are the big stories.

  77. 77

I definitely agreed that they were insensitive with their coverage. When I first watched the broadcast, I thought it was pretty neat that they didn't make a deal about him being gay, choosing rather to focus on his prowess as an athlete. Sure, they didn't have to announce he was gay, as it has nothing to do with the sport, but they deliberately chose not to show his partner supporting supporting him, while in they gladly covered straight couples supporting each other. I'm surprised they also didn't include his performance in the "greatest Olympic performances" montage, as not only was his victory a huge milestone for homosexuals in sports, but he was the only athlete able to beat the Chinese in diving.
    NBC = homophobic? Yes, definitely.

  78. 78

I don't think they were trying to be homophobic, it's just that the other stories involved other athletes.

  79. 79

i am just bummed he's not single

  80. 80

oh i wish he wasn't gay. he is so hottt

  81. 81

    82

Give me a break… the question is not why didn't they talk about this dude's boyfriend, its why DID they talk about the other contestant's significant others?

Consider it a compliment that they didn't foray into his private life, when he's at the Games to be an athlete.

  83. 83

Well for one thing he isn't a child, he is 20.
Being an aussie I am so proud of him, his dive was spectacular and I am also proud that Aussie tv DID show and mention his partner, not homophobic like NBC.

Dear, are you supposed to be Wacko Jacko or The Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez?
    .
    .

  85. 85

who cares about his lover that has nothing to do with the sports commentary?

  86. 86

I think it is homophobia. Here in Australia it was almost as bad. Matthew was the top story on all of the news programs the night he won. They all completely ignored his partner. One news report stated "He celebrated with his mother and a friend" and showed him hugging his partner from the back from a distance. The reporters all know who his 'friend' is and have chosen to ignore him and silence the relationship in their reporting.

Matthew has stated what an inspiration and source of strength his partner has been in the lead up to the Games. If this was a straight couple, the news reports would be all over that angle and asking for comments from significant others.

People need to realise it is events such as this that are destructive to how young queer people view themselves. When an elite athlete records the highest ever Olympic diving score and is subjected to this selective reporting because he is gay, it sends negative messages to other queers and the wider community.

Matthew is a champion who people in this country want to claim as their own so they can revel in some sort of nationalistic frenzy. But god forbid he be allowed to marry the person he loves…. even be shown on TV hugging them.

    I am disgusted.

And homophobes on this board need to realise gay people are marginalised on a daily basis and if they want to be better people they will help challenge it instead of ridiculing people who do take a stand.

  87. 87

i doubt NBC is homophobic they own bravo network!

  88. 88

    Re: Girl Unimpressed
    You're missing the point entirely.

  89. 89

Did they mention every other athlete's orientation and details of their lovers/partners? If yes, then you have a point. Otherwise, stop looking for crap where there is none. Aren't there enough real issues to complain about without using tripe like this to make your case look weak and unsubstantiated?

  90. 90

Phelps might be gay and american lol

  91. 91

that's because nobody f-in gives a shit…waaaa!People mistreat fat people and i'm fat…you don't hear me whining about it…just move on and live your life..f*#k em!

  92. DaLa says – reply to this

    92

"Gay relationships = not the same as straight ones????"

More likely Foreign Athletes = not as interesting to the American audience as American Athletes. I don't recall seeing any stories about the personal lives of athletes from other countries. I DID see a nice historical piece on Greg Louganis, an openly gay AMERICAN athlete with many more medals to his credit than Aussie Mitcham.

Also, Sanya Richard's fiancee is a freakin' NFL star! Maybe if Mitcham was dating a celeb he'd get a story too. Perez is being too sensitive about this one.

  93. 93

While I think it is awesome that Mitcham is openly gay, I don't see any reason to criticize NBC over this. NBC did not cover Phelps and his girlfriend…whoever she may be. NBC did not cover Ryan Lochte and his girlfriend…who I've heard is also an Olympic swimmer. True or not…I don't know. Maybe NBC did not have enough info about Mitcham's personal life to say anything. Maybe it is because he wasn't an American athlete since they didn't do a whole lot of background on athletes who weren't American. Yes, they did the love triangle of the swimmers but that could be because all 3 of them were there, and 2 of them are rivals…so they were all involved in the Olympics. I'm sure there are many other athletes that won and that they did stories on where they didn't talk about their intimate relationships. So, there could be many reasons why they didn't cover it. I'm not going to go and assume why they didn't talk about Mitcham's boyfriend/partner. If they had done this to numerous openly gay athletes…while they covered numerous heterosexual athletes partners…then maybe I would start speculating there were some homophobic issues at NBC…but until then, I don't see an issue.

  94. 94

Hello dumbass? Mitcham isn't American! That's why!

  95. 95

Maybe it's because he's not from the U.S. that they didn't talk about his orientation or show his family. Not everything is a gay issue. Maybe people want to talk about his abilities not what or who he does in the bedroom. Get over it, P.

  96. 96

uhhh, yeah: GAY RELATIONSHIPS are NOT the same as straight ones.
    GAY RELATIONSHIPS = ABOMINATION
STRAIGHT RELATIONSHIPS = THE WAY IT WAS SET UP TO BE FROM THE BEGINNING
