R.I.P.

Lesbian activist and same-sex marriage pioneer Del Martin (above Left) passed away on Wednesday.

She was 87 years young.

In July, we wrote about Dale's marriage to her longtime partner, Phyllis Lyon.

In 1955, Martin and Lyon co-founded the nation's first outspoken advocacy group for lesbians, the Daughters of Bilitis.

Del died at a San Francisco hospital Wednesday morning, two weeks after a broken arm exacerbated her existing health problems.

Her wife was by her side.

So sad.

at least she got to see that the world is moving forward..plus she got to marry her love before she died..so sweet..so sad : (

  8. 8

…I wish her peace. I also hope that there is reincarnation because a person with this kind of strength and self confidence needs to come back. "For All We Know" this can happen.

    How sad!!! OMG!!!

  10. 10

So sad about her passing so soon after her marriage. I remember the celebration of them being the first couple legally married in S.F. after a 50+ year loving partnership. The picture that was on the news services nationally showed their marriage ceremony and a sea of smiling, joyful people surrounding them. I was so interested in their story that I read many articles about them both.
    .
I'm glad that she was able to be a wife and have a wife before her passing. May she rest in peace.

  27. 27

Re: karencarpenter – LOL shut UR face U crack me up!

  28. 28

aww this is so sad =( God bless them for stayin together for so long, it must have been hard 50 years ago for lesbians/gays 2 be together its good she was able to be married b 4 her passing and see how much the world has changed since they were 1st 2gether. RIP

  29. 29

That breaks my heart that she passed so swiftly after finally marrying. I should look on the bright side and be happy she lived long enough to see her loving union made legal.

Enjoy Heaven Del, you will be missed here, I'm sure.

  30. 30

This is so sad. The Daughters of Bilitis along with The Mattachine Society were some of the first GLBT rights organizations in the USA. What she and others like her did was very brave and amazing. We owe you so much.
    Thank you, Martin and Lyon!
    You will be truly missed.

This comment is not about Del, but instead about the loser who has an entry higher up - Chucky! — who KEEPS trying to use Perez's website for free advertising -

    -
Please - anytime you see an entry in comments that is strictly someone trying to advertise their website - DO NOT EVER USE IT.
    -

(pathetic CHEAPSKATE keeps coming back - what a loser)

  32. 32

Thank you Perez for posting this - it's great to see someone that's not close minded that's over the age of 40. I'm glad they were able to be together as they should.

  33. 33

Happy graduation day to her…thats not sad,we get to caught up on this hell planet trying to perfect our souls.

  34. 34

Well everybody has been saying that it's sad, but it is so… it's sad.
Now that she had her wedding, she can rest in peace.
As for her half, it must be real hard on her.
    I wish her well too.

  35. 35

Del Martin's life spanned the time from when women couldn't vote to a time when a gay woman could marry her lifetime partner. That's the way to go out.

  36. 36

Del Martin did so much for battered women too. What an amazing woman. This is such sad news.

  37. 37

she lived long enough to experience a new beginning for gay rights. god knows what it was like for her during her 87 years as a gay woman. I can't imagine it was easy.

  38. 38

Re: Hayworth Honey – you are so right!

  39. 39

    How very sad.

R.I.P., young one, you will be missed.

A very brave woman, sad that they could not celebrate their first wedding anniversary. So sad for her wife. RIP

  41. 41

Again, your GAY agenda is showing.
    .
No one cares about this crap

  42. 42

Please tell me that the cause of death was that she ate some bad "fish".

  43. 43

"HER wife was by her side" Geez, my parents must be turning in their graves, times sure are changing. Good.

  44. 44

My eyes are watering as i type this. I can't believe that in this day and age that two people who love one another cannot legally marry (except for a couple of states). Simply rediculous.

  45. 45

    RIP!

  46. 46

What a brave woman. She paved the way to happiness for so many others with her own trials. I'm so glad she could see and experience the benefits of her efforts before she died. It's truly just that her wife is legally able to make decisions about her estate, etc. Can you imagine how ridiculous it would be for a heterosexual couple married a month to have that right, but a homosexual couple in love for decades not to? Thank goodness we're progressing as a species - actually, some of that thanks goes to Del. Rest in peace.

    What an amazing lady.

Re: Novel1 – Gay agenda? Perez is gay and this is HIS blog, he can have any agenda he wants. Not to mention, he posts things about heteros all day long! Are those his straight agendas?

  50. 50

  51. 51

so sad that they only got to enjoy their marriage for a few months…but so wonderful that they got to experience it at all. r.i.p, you'll meet again in heaven.

  52. 52

87? She looks like shes 110! My grandma is 81 and she doesn't look all decrepit like that lady! Umm…rest in peace though hun…

  53. 53
