Could this be a bad sign?????
U2's next album was expected to be released this fall, though it's now been pushed to early 2009.
The band will continue to write and record material until then. Currently, they've been recording in the south of France.
They've also confirmed the delay of the new album on their official website.
Bono says, "This is our chance for us to defy gravity once again. We have what it takes, we have the songs, new rhythms and a guitar player who is not ready to re-enter earth's atmosphere until he's taken a slice of the moon!"
He adds, "It's been fun, it's been maddening… there have been injuries and recoveries, no babies born that I know of, but this one is nearly ready for the new year of 2009."
The new album will be a follow up to their 2004 How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.

Bono continues, "It’s a brand new chapter for us, and everyone we’ve played the tracks to has said that musically it feels like another departure."
"The last two records were very personal, with a kind of three piece at their heart, the primary colours of rock - bass, guitars and drum. But what we’re about now is of the same order as the transition that took us from The Joshua Tree to Achtung Baby," he says.
And according to Bono, there were about 50 or 60 new songs for the band to consider for their new album.
So let's hope this one is the best of them all.

If they don't go back to their achtung baby/zooropa/pop stage, I don't care for U2, apparently the fans dont care either. How many songs did you hear in the radio of the last album. I like the aggressive, original, fuck the system U2, not the one that cares about target population and winning grammys U2.
It's no secret that a grip of the songs have been leaked (on purpose maybe?). Bono is so pretentious. He's such a self-absorbed piece of shit, he must weigh at least 40-50 courics. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah….
This was Radiohead last year before In Rainbows. Last album was Hail to the Thief in 2003, they toured new songs in 2006, went into the recording studio at the end of that year, toiled for the better part of 2007. Their release kept getting pushed back, finally landing on ~March 2008.
Until Sept 30th 2007 when all hell broke loose and Radiohead surprised everyone by releasing the album on October 10, ten days later.
Maybe U2 will pull a Radiohead in this sense. In any case, a delay is a good thing. They're taking their time.

Re: masterdeluniverso – Actually the last album had five singles, plus two non-album singles in the 4 years since, and all but one charted pretty high on the various music charts. So yeah, I'd have to say people are still listening.
Think about it like this: U2 is one of the few bands in rock to be able to skirt that border between mainstream rock and modern/alt rock, and of their contemporaries, really only R.E.M. and Elvis Costello on the modern side and Bon Jovi and AC/DC on the mainstream side are still around. INXS, the Smiths, 10,000 Maniacs, the Police and the Clash are all gone, and The Cure, Depeche Mode, Def Leppard and Guns N' Roses are like a shadow of their former selves.

Yes I look forward to some new tunes - sadly many of many memories of their songs now bring me back to sept 11 and even the loss of Bono's dad - Kite - beautiful lyrics and quite endearing, but suggest they bring us some music on a more upbeat scale - I LUV U2

Man, I would be thrilled if U2 just disappeared. I'm glad I won't have to deal with the hype over another crappy album for a bit longer.
Well I guess my last message didn't work…last try…I am very glad I won't have to deal with the hype of another crappy album from a horrible band for another few months. Now if they'd just disappear for good I'd be thrilled.

They were here in San Diego for a while recording and shooting videos. There were nothing but positive comments about how nice they were to the people. I'm an oldie-a product of the 80's. I've been a U2 fan since they started and don't remember Bono as being an ass. He's always been holding out for peace? Hasn't he? What do you mean KazIreland? I'm not busting your chops, I'm curious!
You're obviously not very familiar with U2's process, Perez. When they say "the new album will be out at x time" I always laugh. They're always pushing back release dates. They're perfectionists. Viva U2!
