The Russians aren't too excited with the US cartoon South Park airing in their country.
Prosecutors in Russia want the cartoon banned! They're even calling the series "extremist" and have already received various viewer complaints.
Now? All of a sudden???
South Park has been around forevs!!
Valentina Titova, a rep for the prosecutors, says they decided to file a motion after an episode aired on the Moscow television station 2×2 back in January. She claims the cartoon "bore signs of extremist activity."
Titova added, "In accordance with the conclusions made by experts from the court investigations committee, a claim has been filed against 2×2 for its broadcast of an episode of South Park."
Even the Russian Union of Christians of Evangelical Faith has asked that prosecutors ban the show. They claim that 20 experts studied the show for its effects on young viewers and decided it was not appropriate.
Konstantin Bendas, the group's leader, said, "South Park is just one of many cartoons that need to be banned from open broadcast…as it insults the feelings of religious believers and incites religious and national hatred."
Adding, "Our complaint is against a lot of cartoons, but this one was from 'South Park' season three, episode 15."
That episode, titled Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics, features the famous piece of poop singing.
Bendas added, "It's one thing if they are on cable TV and viewers pay money and make a conscious choice. But young children should not be able to turn on the TV after school and watch this. They need to be defended."

I love the show, but I also understand what they're saying about kids being able to just turn it on and see it at all hours of the day. However, where the hell are the kids' parents to change the channel? I think the fact that kids with basic or network channels can turn on Sex and the City or the Simpsons is no different.
This is hillarious. This show has been airing since the 90's and hasn't created "religious hatred" or spawned any significant chaos. ITS A CARTOON! Even young children can figure this out. It is not reality.

I agree that parents should pay attention to what their kids are watching. South Park has been on for a long time now, everyone knows it is just silly fun and not to take it so seriously. Frankly, a lot of the issues they address are real and they just address them in a satirical and sometimes over the top manner. Perhaps the station should have decided to air South Park later in the evening, like after 10:00, but still does not require banning it.
South Park is a privillege. It should be taken away from them for complaining!

hey I AM a RUSSIAN, and i LOVE south park. but its a whole different world out there and youth is VERY influential especially when it comes to american pop culture and all of our (i grew up in u.s.) favorite cartoons. its sad but its true, and most likely for the best. so leave them alone, the economy is so messed up the last thing they want to worry about is what they're children are watching on tv.

southpark is not a children's show! That's why it comes on later. One of the funniest movies ever made was South Park- the songs were not for car pooling the kids, but were a lot of fun anyway. Be careful what you say about the Russians- they are coming back to take back all the countries that cannot defend themselves. First Georgia, then the rest. They have great plans to make this a world where only China, Russia and the USA exist. China wants all of south asia . Russia wants all of europe. In about 40 years, you wait.

I still watch South Park occasionally, but the past few years I feels as though they are focused more on how revolting they can be instead of just being funny. World-record craps. Blood and gore galore. The final straw for me was Randy Marsh covered in his own spooge. The worst offense is that the show just isn't nearly as funny as it used to be.

South Park is genius. It's one of the funniest shows around and it's fearless. I appreciate the wit and humor because they aren't afraid to make fun of everything and anything. But we need to remember that it is an cartoon for adults and not kids.
