Back In Chains!

90's rockers Alice In Chains are working on a new album.

It's been more than 13 years since they've been in the studio.

The new stuff will feature their new singer, William DuVall.

Their original crooner, Layne Staley, suffered a fatal drug overdose in 2002.

What say you, grunge rockers?

not cool. let AIC rest in peace with Layne Staley.

  2. 2

im not a 'rocker' but by the sound of it,
they dont seem to be active- or popular

  3. 3

fucking love AIC although, i agree with the first comment, there's no replacing staley.

  4. 4

It definately won't b the same.
    RIP Layne

    Primera !!!!

  5. 5

I never liked this band. who cares.

  6. 6

    second!

  7. 7

they chould kept it in the box

  8. 8

I think they should have changed the damn name of the band out of respect for Layne. :-(

  9. 9

Layne was sooooo dope, but Alice was much more than just him. He left that band high and dry, even through their dramas, those musicians brought pure magic…layne is missed but i'm glad to see the rest of the guys moving forward.

  10. 10

Can't be Alice in Chains without Lane Staley.

  11. 11

Maybe have to hear the guy.

  12. 12

    Blashphemous! Absolutely blashpemous!

  13. 13

There is no Alice In Chain without Layne.

  14. 14

I agree with everyone here, AIC is not AIC without Layne. He had such a distinctive voice. He was so far gone for years before he actually died. Such a shame.

  15. 15

Re: Melodie – my thoughts exactly

  16. 16

I think it is bullshit that they replaced Layne with someone who was never a part of the band in the first place. I would have liked to see them together WITHOUT that douchebag and having Jerry sing because he sang lead on most of their later songs.

  17. 17

There is no Alice in Chains without Layne Staley! They should just go under another name if they are making new music

  18. 18

I used to get fisted to this music all the time back in the 90's.

  19. 19

I had the same pessimistic thoughts….until the "practice tour" in May 2006. I was impressed by Duvall, and guess that the naysayers are either A. over 30 or B. too broke, cheap, or "cool" to have seen a recent AIC tour. If you haven't seen them live with Duvall, then your opinion holds no validity. If you did and were disappointed, you are clinging to your misspent youth while clutching your Rogaine or ovulation test kits and wishing you were back in 1995. If Layne wanted to sing in 2008, he would have quit smack, and AIC honors him on stage.

  20. 20

Alice in chains is,was and always will be an amazing band. You could never replace Layne Staley but Alice in chains was much more than just him. Jerry Cantrell wrote alot of there songs and Du Vall does a great job paying homage to layne. Chain fans should just be happy to see them back out live. 3 out of 4 not bad in my eyes

  21. 21

    Not without Layne.

  22. 22

you can't have alice in chains with out satley's voice
    come on!

  23. 23

I don't know, I think their time has past. It could be embarassing. Like the whole Gun's and Roses comeback thing. Just my oppinion, was never into that kinda music. Don't really care.

  24. 24

    It won't be the same…

  25. 25

    Re: Slutstick – EXACTLY!

  26. 26

Perez, I wish you would do more stories on rockers that arn't Fall Out Boy or Jonas Brothers, they offer good dish too.

    27

I was a huge Alice in chains fan. I can't imagine the band without Layne. I must say that I would be interested in hearing what the album would sound like. Although I think with most bands when they lose a member it's hard to every replace them. HOWEVER look at Nirvana/Foo fighters! I'm sure I wasn't the only one worried how that transition would be…

  28. 28

I respect that they're doing that, but no way, no how can they replace Layne.

  29. 29

….okay….not the same without Layne…his voice was Alice in Chains….but a new album SO COOL!!!!

  30. epi says – reply to this

    30

It definately won't be the same but I LOVEEEEEEEE AIC so I'll definately buy and give em a listen. Hopefully it will ROCK though I know it will be different. I say YAY!

  31. epi says – reply to this

    31

Re: mikeylikesit – Totally agree! Though I am over 30 so PFTT

  32. 32

Dont care. The 90's were a much better time to grow up than today, musically at least.

  33. 33

DuVall isn't half bad….But no one can replace Layne.

  34. 34

Re: Razberri – talking shit about people over 30..well that would be people that listened to AIC (or close in age anyways)

  35. 35

They should just make it a new band instead of trying to bring back Alice in Chains. There will be tons of comparisons, and Layne Staley's voice was kind of a key thing for AIC.

  36. 36

    w/o Layne Staley, to me….it just isn't AIC…..we'll see….

  37. 37

Layne WAS AIC. I feel for Jerry Cantrell but sorry, this just isn't AIC.

  38. 38

    Layne = Alice In Chains.

They need to move on like Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters) and start something new…

  39. 39

The producer is the guy who does Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver and brought back Rush.

  40. 40

i love me some AIC, but Layne made the band, so unless this new singer is off the charts awesome, it will sucketh

  41. 41

Re: masterdeluniverso – oh man, i SO agree with you there…now we are going to be accused of being old…well i'm not 30 yet!!

  42. 42

    YAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY

  43. 43

For all you stupid fuckers that think they should change the name AIC was AIC BEFORE Layne Staley came along. Jerry is AIC and always will be. Hes the heart and soul of AIC. Layne Staley was the lead singer Jerry picked for AIC. Layne was a great singer, but for someone that single handedly destroyed one of the greatest bands out there with his selfish drug use, does not deserve to take the rest of the band with him as long as they can still rock it.

Jerry can sing and he makes his guitars sing, so FUCK YOU to all you ASSHOLES that think AIC cant live on. Will it be the SAME? HELL NO! But Jerry needs to rock the fuck on.

  44. 44

    i say i don't think i will bother with this … without layne, what's the point? :(

  45. 45

Loved AIC… hope they make a comeback. R.I.P. Layne.

  46. 46

    Re: Razberri

oh screw. i was listening to AIC in '95; i'm 23 years old - not even close to 30. you have no idea what you're talking about. you suck!

  47. 47

A band I know opened for AIC on their '06 tour and were all HUGE AIC fans, so they were skeptical seeing the new guy, and came away with a lot of respect for him and what he does with AIC. Yes, Layne was a HUGE part of AIC, but give the new guy a shot. Besides, do you really think this guy believes he could ever replace Layne? For that matter, would Layne want them to quit because he's gone? Even Layne's mom says he wouldn't and she is beyond thrilled about this. Side note for the AIC fans, the 7th Annual Layne Staley Tribute show was held recently and was broadcast online. It is archived on synclive.com and can be found under the Highest Rated section on the front page of the site. :)

  48. 48

Re: Andy2-7 – Though Jerry did start AIC, and did most of the writing, Layne's voice is the Alice in Chains sound. His voice is still copied by so many (and very poorly, I think.) I am an OLD fan who knows Jerry's brilliance- and how lucky he was that he had Layne. He wasn't just a fabulous singer, he made those songs beyond brilliant - especially in harmony with Jerry. I too am pissed that Layne screwed it all up. I am eager to hear the new material - but I am still unsure the sound can be equaled. So, I guess, Fuck Me…

    49

    WHY?

  50. 50

Alice In Chains died on April, 5 2002. Show some respect for Layne.

  51. 51

LOVED, LOVED, LOOOVED AIC, but who is this DuVall and why are they doing this? The MTV Unplugged is one of my all time favorite and most played DVDS, but I am unhappy about this! I might be interested if they got a decent singer, reformed the band, made new music, but avoided the AIC name and music! The only thing that stops me from completely condemning this is what happened to AC/DC, but I never saw it happen to anyone else. Then stupid shit happened like Journey hiring a Philippino Karaoke singer to replace Perry is a stab in the soul of that band's heart! Cover bands do their shit better than they do now! Not happy about this one bit! Layne's voice and tortured soul was the heart of this band! And if you haven't watched Unplugged ever and like the band buy it!!! It was their last big appearance and despite the fact that he was completely out of it and near the end of his life, it was still AMAZING!!!

  52. 52

Well, actually, they did one or two other appearances, but Unplugged was their last big one together. It was done on April 10th, 1996 in NY. Layne even needed a Mulligan on Sludge factory as he messed up at the start. "FUCK!""DO OVER!" During the video, you can see the look of concern grow on the rest of the band's face, especially Jerry's as Layne started to fade near the end. Jerry took over more and more near the end. When Layne wasn't wearing his sunglasses, you could see he was really fucked up out of his mind. Despite all of that, it is such a clear, crisp recording that every fan should see and have! Please get it if you don't have it!!!

    53

Layne Staley was Alice in Chains.

  54. 54

Now i didn't see AiC on their tour with him, and i was too young to see them in there heyday in the late 90s, but Will has been singing Layne's parts when Jerry would tour solo, and he is very good. I also don't think Layne was AiC, him and Jerry split the song writing pretty much down the middle. I will definately get this album when it comes out.

  55. 55

…..not interested, not the same without layne.

  56. 56

Call the band something else. I hate when the identity of the band (the singer) is no longer and they think they are the same band. Crue did it, Skid Row did it, Warrant did it, etc., so disband or change the name…it usually doesn't work.

  57. deetz says – reply to this

    57

retarded. alice in chains is not alice in chains without layne. they should have created a new band with a new name if they wanted to make new songs.

  58. 58

    NOT the same without Layne.

  59. 59

My son and I saw them open for Velvet Revolver last tour. They were fantastic and sounded great. More music is great. Count us in!

  60. 60

This perks up my morning…thanks. I hope the new lead doesn't alter their raw sound.

  61. Saki says – reply to this

    61

Oh sweet Layne, he is sadly missed

  62. 62

there is no alice in chains w/o Layne. His voice was so distinct, and so perfect for that band that no one can come close to doing it justice.

  63. 63

    Holy Axel Rose !

  64. 64

Alice in Chains already has a name for themselves so they have THAT and only that going for them.. if they tour they bette rnot use any of the songs from before because Alice in Chains…well arnt alice in chains with out Layne Staley… end of story

  65. 65

I'll try to keep an open mind, but these things usually don't turn out well.

  66. 66

I dunno, I love the AIC, have been a fan since I was young… the music was great, but what made it perfect was Layne's voice. He had the raw emotion needed to sing the bluesie grunge. I have no idea who this new guy is. Maybe they should've changed their name, then we wouldn't expect something more.

  67. Dani says – reply to this

    67

I saw them twice with William - the new lead singer, and they were AWESOME. Really really great.

  68. 68

Cantrell is a good guitarist and should start a new group, but the AIC was OVER before Layne died.

  69. 69

OH hell fcking yea! Its about time! Layne was a huge part of the band and it sure as hell wont be the same w/out him but Jerry C. was the main song-writer so I think they should be fine. And btw. That new lead singer dude has killer pipes!

  70. 70

yea, they better come up with a new sound

  71. 71

awesome! ive seen alice in chains without layne and their new singer actually gave me goosebumps, he sounds so much like the original. of course its not the same band as before but its the closest anyone will get so im super excited! cant wait to see them live again!

  72. 72

Hes a good singer. I like him… But I dunno whether Id go see them outta respect for Layne

  73. 73

Re: Andy2-7 – your so right! i agree completely. Jerry was the backbone of Alice and Chains and he doesnt get nearly as much recognition as he desearves. but ya i agree with you completely

  74. 74

I say, "YAY!" I loved Alice in Chains then and I will love them now again (hopefully). Only time will tell if they can still rock that prevailant sound of theirs. I think that they will do OK.
I was more bummed out when Layne died than when Kurt Cobain died. I was shocked when Layne died. I went into a little bit of a mourning stage for someone I didn't even know except through their music. I look forward to hearing their new music.

  75. 75

No Layne = no Alice In Chains! I don't like the idea at all. They should have just let the bands legacy live on as it was. Now they're only going to jeopardize putting out a shitty album and leaving on a sour note.

  76. 76

Sorry to dissapoint you all but Jerry is the creative side of AIC. Layne will never be fogotten and anyone who has seen a show recently of AIC with DuVall knows that he fits the band. Good luck AIC!!

  77. 77

My husband loved this group - so it takes me back to when we first started dating 13 years ago. I don't think it'll be the same without Layne, but I know the surviving members of the group will pay homage to Layne and honor him in whatever they decide to do. Alice in Chains!

  78. 78

I LOVE ALICE IN CHAINS!!! But I think they takin a risk with that new dude. I dunno. Layne Stanley was fuckin amazin

  79. 79

for real. alice in chains is one of my favorite bands and i'm not ready for their ploy for more cash to ruin the beauty of dirt or their self-titled. i remember the day they found layne staley and i was sad then that they'd never reunite, but now? nooooooooooo

  80. 80

AIC is stellar.. but without layne staley.. they aren't truly AIC

  81. 81

Noone can complete with Layne. Ugh.

  82. 82

They are nothing without Layne Stanley :(

  83. 83

Re: mikeylikesit – Good piont, it's good to see Layne and Alice in Chains honored! I only recently started to appreciate how awesome this band really was and i would love to see them live even if it's a different vocalist. I imagine they are playing old AIC or they wouldn't keep the name. Jerry Cantrell wrote most of their music anyways, Rooster is about his father, shouldn't he be able to perform it?

  84. 84

    I can't wait. I adored AIC!
