Miniature dachshund gnawed off owner's toe while she slept
An American woman says her beloved miniature dachshund gnawed off her right big toe while she was asleep.
Linda Floyd said her beloved Roscoe has since been put down because of safety concerns.
The 56-year-old says she has no feeling in her toes because of nerve damage from diabetes. She discovered the toe missing after waking from a nap.
A vet said that because the toe had been bandaged due to an ingrowing nail, it may have somehow attracted the dog.

This happened here in Kentucky too. The owner was paralyzed from the waist down and the dog was a pit bull puppy. The pup chewed off the man's toes while he slept, however in that case the owner chose to keep the dog since it was not considered an attack and he felt the dog was no threat. I don't feel that this dog should have been put to sleep, it was just being a dog and wanting to chew on something.
How could you sleep thru that?

The dog seriosly might of thought it was food or something, he chewed, didn't attack. I hate it when people put their dogs down when it is their fault. Feed the dog, give it chew toys, or just make it sleep somewhere else, while she was sleeping, if she had putrid stuff coming out of her toe.

That's crap. I bet that dog never did a single thing before this and they put him to sleep. the dog had a normal attraction to the site. the damn thing doesn't know any better. I've had dachshunds since i was little and none of them remotely did that. my brother has been dealing with an injury since 2000 and has had bandage this whole time and not one of them have continued to touch it after they are corrected.

I have worked as a manicurist/pedicurist, for years…and, I HIGHLY recommend to my diabetic clients, NOT to ’round off' the toenails. Instead, clip and file the nails straight across, and EVEN with the end of the toe. It may require more grooming….but, it alleviates ingrown nails, which CAN cause gangrene, and amputation.

Personally, I wish that my sons' great-aunt had a dog like Roscoe. She was suffering from Diabetes (but, since she refused to see a Doctor in the past 40 years, she didn't know it). Well, she stepped on something sharp, when she was mowing her lawn one day…and ignored the discoloration until the nurse, who comes to their home to check on her husband, FORCED her into the hospital. She eventually had to have her leg amputated up to her knee.
Personally, I would rather have a dog gnaw off my big toe, than to be without a leg. But, that's just me, I guess.

This happed months ago. I work with the Animal Control Officers who responded. The dog had dried blood all over its face when they picked it up from the house; but the dog seemed friendly enough.
Couldn't she have had the poor thing adopted by a friend or family member? Seems cruel to put the poor pooch to sleep, after all, he didn't know it was wrong. She didn't even wake up!!!!

We were told in my forensics class that dachshunds are notoriously known to do this. This may be disturbing for some, but there have been cases where the owner has died in the home and the dachshund has become hungry. Realizing they have no access to food, they will nibble away on the dead body to survive. So much for man's best friend?
