When Hurricane Katrina hit…my area donated about 20 semi's FULL of food, cleaning/medical/hygiene supplies. AND, the truckdrivers donated their time and money to haul it all down to New Orleans. Not bad for an area of about 50,000 people (which makes up about 4 towns), huh?

Chances are, we will do the same for the victims of Hurricane Ike. And, it will be my privilege to help in any way that I can.

NO! Red Cross is still sitting on Katrina donations.
It was revealed during the Myanmar crisis.
YOu stupid americans were aware of the Myanmar crisis, right?
or were you all just watchinh 'Idol'?

please don't forget about the Salvation Army!

  9. 9

Let's not too quickly forget about the victims of Hurricane Gustav who are still suffering.

  10. 10

yes, gustave victims still need aid too.

  11. 11

yeah we definitely still need help after gustav. im not saying that those who stuck out ike dont need help too, but in my opinion, its pretty pathetic, the lack of news coverage areas (like baton rouge, where im from), have recieved from national news. there are still businesses that are not open from gustav. every other house on my street has a blue tarp on the roof, including my own. there are piles of trees built up on the side of the road. many houses still do not have power. just because there werent many deaths from the storm, doesnt mean that there isnt great devastation. both hurricane ike annnddd hurricane gustav victims need help.

Thank you Perez. I live in downtown Houston and went through Ike's wrath. My avatar shows some of the damage I incurred. People need to realize how much even a little can help. I don't have insurance and my bedroom is destroyed - but in comparison to most of my fellow Texans - I am thankful that I came away unharmed.

For those who have been through a hurricane - it is one of the scariest events that mother nature can inflict. I, like many others, went through this alone. And when you have no idea what is going on (because of no power) and couldn't do anything anyway - it is a very humbling feeling.

Any help your readers can give to any one who has suffered through this or any other hurricane would be appreciated more than they can know. The basics (electricity, water, food, shelter) that we take for granted everyday isn't appreciated more than when it has been taken away and been told no one knows when it will be restored.

Help Texas, Ike, Gustav, and any future hurricane victims. Thank you to everyone that gives a shit. :)

  13. 13

Thanks for that! I'm here in Lake Charles, LA (SW Louisiana). We've suffered massive flooding from Ike.

I work for the Red Cross, and what you don't understand is that if someone donates to a certain disaster (ie Hurricane Katrina), we cannot take ANYTHING that was donated for that disaster and use it for other disasters. We received much criticism when we did this for 9/11. It is all about donor intent. This is why we are encouraging people to make general donations, or a donation such as "hurricanes 2008". And just to get your minds going - what other organization out there aids in disasters with 97% volunteers? None. The Red Cross is currently operating and helping with borrowed money. If we don't receive donations, who knows if we will exist when the next big disaster hits.

Re: memento mori – You are WRONG!!! The Red Cross did not "sit" on aid for Myanmar. The Red Cross was one of the FIRST organizations to try and get into Myanmar, in fact the organization INSISTED ON GIVING AID and was DENIED access by the Myanmar government for several days. The aid that was not given was not because the Red Cross chose not to give it but because the Myanmar government chose not to accept it.

Re: redcrosschick – I work for the Red Cross as well and was just about to write a similar post. Thank you for enlightening the general public. So many individuals out there have NO idea how donor dollars work.

When is Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Oprah Winfrey, or all the other celebrities that rushed to New Olreans going to come and help my family pull the 60ft boat out of the our dining room that was blown into it by the 62mph winds we suffered in Crystal Beach? I'm sure we won't see anyone of that "caliber" down here trying to turn the 4 million homes with out electricity back on.
