Barack Obama's Vice Presidential running mate, Joe Biden says that paying higher taxes should be considered "patriotic" for wealthy Americans.
Uhmm, not so much!
While the rich should get taxed more, it's more patriotic to be proud of a country that is fiscally responsible and doesn't waste their taxpayers money. Or so we think.

I can only think of Ben Affleck. When Bush announced his original tax cuts, Ben donated his extra tax rebate to an agency that needed the money more than him. He basically said he really didn't need that extra million or so.
The thing about most wealthy folks, is they have accountants that can help them funnel their money away so they pay minimal taxes. What Biden might be suggesting is, if they pay their fair share, they might be helping their country. I know I'm ok paying taxes because my money goes to building roads, protecting the borders, emergency services, etc. Why should I pay more for these things than Paris Hilton?

I get what you're saying Perez, but the underlying fact is that large corporations are headed by some of the countries wealthiest americans that get enourmous tax breaks. A big argument for them is that if taxes are raised they'll take their business to other countries (as many already do). That IS unpatriotic and adds to an even larger unemployment rate. Lets pay it forward and take care of our own. The wealthy have had it REALLY good for a REALLY long time now. We should all be in this together…that seems patriotic to me.

What Obama/Biden are proposing is higher taxes for people who make more than $250k per year. What he believes patriotic is letting those people carry more of the burden and take it off the backs of the middle class (which covers the greater majority of the US). . .

Whatever Perez. His point is that Bush gave rich people a break in 2003 as an attempt to help 'stimulate' the economy through trickle-down economics. Instead it just helped his rich friends get richer, thus making the middle class poorer. The average income in the middle class has actually dropped while inflation has increased. Obama just wants to end that tax break and help reverse that effect. If you look at the historical data, 20 years ago, the top 1% of americans paid 25% of the country's income taxes while accounting for 12% of the country's income. Under George Bush, they now pay 40% of the country's income tax, but have a 22% share in the country's income. That's about 5% off, perfectly matching the Bush tax cut from 20% to 15% on rich folks' dividend earnings.

It's easy for people to say "tax the rich more" but do those people really have an undersatnding of how much some people do pay? There are plenty of average families you associate with who may pay upwards of $1 million in taxes…do you really think they need to pay MORE? Yes their income is higher but they are far from the rich you'd think of.
Yes, bailing out AIG sucks for all the tax payers but the repurcussions of it not happening might have been worse. Plenty of people have their incomes, savings, reitrment riding on AIG and the fall of that in the midst of the credit crisis and sub prime could have caused way more turmoil and financial problems.
Too many people want change without sacrifice. I say the rich fork it over, and get tax breaks when they're donating to charities … besides, the rich can afford kick ass tax lawyers and eventually find ways to hide their wealth anyway!

PLEASE know the facts on this. Obama wants to LOWER taxes for middle class folks but repeal the Bush tax cuts for wealthier people, I think above $250k/year as has been stated. The Republican policies of the last 8 years have caused the rich to get richer and poor to get poorer. I am in the bracket that would pay more taxes under Obama's plan, and I'm willing to do it if it will help get this country get back on track and maybe help get health care for all.

perez - i actually agree with you here. and, as a matter of fact, rich american's DO pay a lot more in taxes already! you see, as your income goes up, you get taxed a different percentage. actually, there is a huge population of americans that pay no taxes at all - about 40% of americans. the top 5% of taxpayers carry over 50% of the tax burden.
while i don't necessarily have a huge problem with that (because let's face it, a family of 5 making $40K couldn't really afford to pay 35% in taxes, a family of 5 making $500K can), i do have a gigantic problem with obama wanting to give 95% of american's a tax cut. that's not a tax cut when 40% of americans pay no taxes. that's what we call wealth redistribution - ie the government takes money away from certain people and hands it over to others. and that's wrong. tax cuts are one thing, but obama's not talking about a tax cut!

Both parent's working in decent jobs and together bringing in about $75K/year and trying to put two kids through college. Wanna know what financial aide officers said to them? Refinance your house. The modest house they spent years saving and sacrificing for. I worked almost full time while in college to pay part of my tuition. Now that wasn't easy with a full schedule of classes. You learn to sacrafice. A huge portion of this country doesn't know how to sacrafice, but I wont point fingers at who they are. Now I'm not crying for our situation because truth be told I found us to be a very fortunate family…there are others way worse off than we were. Thats why it doesn't irk me to give away such a huge portion of my check every week in taxes…some people need it more than me (and not because they are lazy and stupid). Thats not to say I hope for a day when the burden is less, but in the interim we have some huge problems to fix and the only way you can fix them is with more money. The American Dream isn't even in the reach of most of the population and wont be for some time.

I am a college graduate and probably not "young" by your standards (I'm younger than Jennifer Lopez–does that count)…paid my OWN way through college and my father was a teacher who worked for peanuts… I AM the American success story. I made poor choices and became pregnant in college. I NEVER took a dime from the government or expected anyone to clean up MY mess. I now work as a nurse and I see EVERY DAY dozens of lazy Americans who want free Healthcare because they can't bother to show up to work to keep a job to have their own provided.
The fact is many Americans ARE lazy. I see no crime in people making money and don't understand the punishment of a higher percentage of taxes of those who are "rich" to make lower class Americans feel better about themselves.

No matter how much they try to target wealthy America with taxes, history shows that it is middle class American that has to foot the bill. Both Obama and McCain do not have a plan that exclusively targets the wealthy here in the U.S. To quote both McCain and Obama "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig".
Better to tax the rich than the middle and low income families. At least the wealthy can afford it.

And, considering he represents the party that can actually manage fiscal responsibility, rather than allowing rich bastards to bleed the economy dry and then run, leaving the bag of debt in the hands of us taxpayers…I'd say he has a firm leg to stand on.
I agree that rich people SHOULD feel some kind of a social obligation to their country to give back. It's absurd that anyone makes millions in the first place. The least they can do is thank America for giving them that chance by giving back to people. BUT, I also agree with Perez that being fiscally responsible is also very important.

Re: misskeli – Give me a break. It's not my resposiblity to fork over 60% of my paycheck so I can watch the "poor" hang out on their front proches all day long. You want our ecoomy to tank? You want sky-high inflation and record unemployment. Sure you won't pay taxes middle Amercia but you won't have jobs either. Business will find a way to take home a profit…even if that means laying YOU off! You want patriotism…join the military like my Grandpa, my Dad and my brothers. Socialsim/Communism is not Patriotism. In fact, they couldn't be more opposite.
