Bush Asks Congress to Give $700 Billion to Banks

w__opt.jpg

George Bush made a very Democratic Party move on Saturday.

The President asked the Congress to give $700 BILLION to the Wall Street banks that are basically in deep shit.

Bushy called it a 'big solution to a big problem'.

This 'big solution' would be the BIGGEST federal biz bailout since the Great Depression.

Funny — Bush in a way admitted that the 'Republican' way of letting the market 'sort itself' out can't fix a big problem!

If Bush's request is passed by Congress, the $700 BILLION that would go to the banks is your money, taxpayers.

Basically, if Wall Street isn't bailed out big time, our economy would be screwed and even more people would be out of work.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see how Congress responds to Bushy's request.

We sense they'll say yes, but the Dems will surely inject lots of 'we told you so's' all along the way.

…I didn't go beyond my reach and I'd sure like a few mil to tide me over. "Sailing On The Tide" of big money…

  3. 3

The republicans have screwed over this country long enough!!!! We need to get rid of them NOW!!!

  4. 4

    blahhhh

  5. 5

shut up Perez, you're an uneducated whore

  6. 6

The Democratic Party would have never made this move if in the White House. What on Earth are you talking about, Perez?!

The people of this country go insane at the thought of a candidate possibly raising taxes, but how do these morons think we're gonna repay all that money back if we don't raise taxes. It's no wonder we have such credit card debt in this country. Too many people live the republican way of borrowing and spending and never thinking about how they are gonna repay the money. Idiots!

  10. 10

History will remember him as the WORST President in the history of the US. I hope he looks back at his presidency and feels SHAME. He walked into a surplus and spent it, had to bail out banks (Republicans who want less regulations take notice, it's your jack ass ideas that got us here, we need a certain amount of regulations). Two wars, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, a loss of our constitutional rights. He should leave office with his head low never to bee seen in public again. He destroyed the office just like he has with every other business venture he tried. Please don't write me telling me were safer because of him, that just tells me you have never left the US or talked to anyone from another country, we are LESS safe!

  11. 11

Perez–this is NOT a "Democratic Party" move. The Democrats don't wait until things turn to shit, then bring all their friends in to make a lot of money fixing it. They promote effective regulation all along. This is classic George Bush–don't bring the Dems into this. You're wrong.

  12. 12

"The people of this country go insane at the thought of a candidate possibly raising taxes, but how do these morons think we're gonna repay all that money back if we don't raise taxes. "

Raising taxes alone isn't going to solve the government's debt problem. A complete audit of government spending and significant reform is needed. Neither candidate is offering real change, just superficial change.

As far as the economy goes, McCain won't regulate it enough and Obama will be too protectionist, driving business and money out of the country. We're screwed either way.

  13. 13

Oh, and that's not a picture of Bush.

  14. 14

Shocker, you sound quite ignorant with reporting this bit of OLD news. It is not republican or democrate — it's about keeping our economy on track. Have you got any suggestions brainiac??? It's a situation, as was/is most of his presidency where your damned if you do and your damned if you dont. I dont think Bush is the greatest President, but I definitely wouldn't call him the worst. I live in NYC and have to say I felt he did a very great job at the time of disaster. Of course Rudy Guiliani was key in getting the City through it all as was Bloomberg but President Bush was very much the Leader and Commander in Chief we needed.

  15. 15

BLAME BUSH! BLAME REPUBLICANS! THEY FUCKED UP OUR COUNTRY, AND MCCAN'T WILL DO THE SAME THING! PEOPLE ARE STUPID! BUSH IS RETARDED! REPUBLICANS ARE MORONS! MCCAIN IS MORE OF THE SAME!

You shouldn't pretend to know the differences between democrats and republicans. Know the limits of your cognitive abilities and go back to (or have your employees go backto) photoshopping cum stains on photos to collect a paycheck or have more feuds with mentally ill teenagers with youtube accounts.

  17. 17

Perez has no clue about economics. But, all he cares about is gay rights. If Bush were to enact a gay rights bill today, Perez would change his party affiliation and would be applauding Bush. Just look at how he turned on Obama yesterday.

  18. 18

a billion here, a trillion there….how are we gonna pay for all this? how many billions per month is the war? what is the next large government bailout? Auto? Airline? Social Security? Medicare? I can't see how we DON'T raise taxes at some point in the future.

  19. 19

Bushy dosen't care. He is bailing out his friends and his pocketbook will not be effected. When are the American people going to open their eyes and see all the problems bush and Cheney have caused this county. why was this bastard not impeached years ago. Not only is the economy shit because of his fake war but millions of people have been slaughtered, american's and non american civilians at his hands.. is he any better than Sadam Hussien?

  20. 20

Say No to Mccain and his biggot bitch. Women…do you really want to lose your right to decide that is best for your body?

  21. 21

Isn't this just the fucking cherry on top of the big ole melted ice cream that was George Bush's presidency?! He is the worst fucking president in our entire country's history. Shame on all you fucktards who voted that moron into office TWICE. Now vote DEMOCRATIC to clean up this truly dismal mess.

  22. 22

look at daddy bush.. his presidency ended the same..only that time the American people were smart enough not to let the bastard in for another term. Bush talked some terrorism shit and we all fell for it. Now we, the middle class have to pay with our homes and our jobs while bush and his friends are richer.

  23. 23

NY Times, 2003, the president warned that derivatives were a house of cards waiting to fold if something wasn't done quickly. He has an MBA from Harvard and could see the writing on the wall. House Banking Committee Chairman, Barney Frank forced banks and mortgage houses to loan money to the minorities and poor for entry level homes. If they didn't, they would be audited. Bank of America began giving mortgages to ILLEGAL ALIENS that had NO Social Security numbers! Anybody seen Barney in the last several days? Hell no. The demorats want to adjourn and leave town. Some leadership from a congress with a 9% approval rating.

  24. 24

How quickly Dems like to point the finger. It is true that the democratic congress had put guidelines in place for banks to supply mortgages to minorities to reach a quota so that it would be fair (NAACP). I'd like to see data on how many foreclosures are based on minorities who couldn't keep up. If that's the case, then the DEMS started a lot of this financial mess.

  25. 25

We are teetering on the brink of financial disaster in this country and around the world for that matter. Taxes will have to be raised no matter who gets into office there is no other option. My mother always said she wanted a better life for me and my siblings and now I fear that the same will not be for my children thanks to these fucking assholes that have completetly destroyed this county.

This is very serious gang. In 1999 the Republican Congress removed regulation from our financial business. In a nutshell, the thieves have run wild with toxic home loans. You may start to hear that Fannie and Freddie were the cause. They are not, but rather victims of declining house prices. But Republicans have to keep lying. Now it's about the facts. Yes, this bail out is going to cost all of us. The real important issue is how do we go forward to institute new regulations that get us back to a healthy economy. This year we only have 1 choice and that is Mr. Obama. McCain's small government, deregulation stance has completely failed. He has been flip flopping all week because even he knows everything he has so proudly stood for all these 26 years in the Senate has failed and failed completely.

  27. 27

$3 trillion to the war in Iraq and $700 billion to the Banks. I guess America is made of money now. Where is my hand out then? This administration has been the biggest fraud

  28. 28

  33. 33

Much of this mess can be traced back to the landmark Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999, which served to reduce government regulations in existence since the Great Depression separating banking, insurance and brokerage activities. Senator Phil Gramm Texas Republican spearheaded this deregulation and up until July was John McCain's econimic advisor.

Come on. This goes way back to the beginning of the Clinton years and even into Reagan years. This has been brewing for years and years. Everybody blames everything on the president, but does anyone not have a clue that it is the congress and senate who comes up with the bills that make the laws and they are either passed or vetoed by the President. You can harp on this shit forever. McCain and Obama can say they are going to go do all this shirt, but they have no power unless a bill is put before them.

  36. 36

Mary C: that's a bold-faced lie. Anyone with a hair of intelligence knows that the Congress is and has been dominated by Democrats for two years now. More Republican lies gang. Loans to inner city residents are NOT the cause of this mess. McCain's backup boys like Rush and Beck are trying to make this a racial issue. Do Not Believe these bigots. Inner city folks have very low default rates on conventional loans. The toxic loans were done by shady mortgage brokers (Ditech, Countrywide, etc) and sold off to financial institutions all over the world. Shady real estate appraisers are also to blame. In any case, the defaulting of these loans made outside of any government regulations are turning bad all around the world.

  38. 38

PEREZ, Thanks for posting this story. Everyone needs to understand what is happening and how it will effect them, their pension plans, bank accounts, etc.

  39. 39

Wake up people - it's not about Republicans vs. Democrats and hasn't been for a very long time. It's about the few people at the top who have all of the power and all of the money, and the rest of us sheep who are being manipulated. All the time you waste arguing over bullshit party differences is time you aren't spending questioning why the leaders are corrupt and are setting laws in place and taking measures to further their own agendas and keep the majority of us under them. The people at the top are self-serving fat cats on both sides- the political parties really aren't any different from one another when it comes down to it. This country needs some CHANGE and it's never going to happen if the public keeps squabbling amongst themselves instead of working against the real enemy.

Your belief in Reaganomics and the failed Republican economic theories of the past decades has now brought our great country to its economic knees. We have in essence become a socialized state like much of Europe. The current crisis is being likened to the 1990 crisis in Sweden. If you want to see where we are headed read up on Scandinavia.

In the meantime, vote for the smart guy Obama not the dunce of his class McPain.

Why don't you research what's been going on the past 2 years in Congress before you start throwing around insults. The Republicans have fillibustered 95 times therefore nothing gets done. McCain was one of the Keating Five (The savings and Loan scandal) which up until this week was the greatest economic mess since the Depression. And up until recently, McCains top economic aid was the man who pushed through this bill in 1999. McCain wouldn't know change if it hit him over the head.

  47. 47

There are so many corporations who are not paying their fair share in taxes. Go after them. I also want Congress to to make it illegal for any of these CEO's to drive a company into the ground and then be able to walk away with millions or billions of dollars. Take everything they own and leave them with the shirts on their backs. Why should the workers be the only ones who have to suffer?

Ziti Clinton orginally opposed the deregualtions but was neuter by the witch hunt sex scandal and impeachment. Who knows what else they had over him at the time. Don't get me wrong, I really like HRC but she should have dumped the guy. But the real truth is that it is a series of legislation put forth by Phil Gramm that has lead to this mess. Phil is the main architect of McCain econ plan. He also has Alan Greenspan on his team. Although, last Saturday Alan stated that the McCain tax policy will not work. And fired HP CEO (45 Million payoff) Carly Fioranio rounded out his team. What's most interesting is that all of these folks have now jumped "under the bus" and have disappeared from public site. McCain and his failed economic theory is now down the creek without any paddles. He can't get back.

  51. 51

In reality, theDOW is up 40 points in the last month, 18% in the past 5 years, and up 44% in the past 10 years. so, the market CAN sort itself out. The market is not in charge of people giving out bad loans and mortgages to people they knew had no way of paying it just to make a quick buck. Republican policies had nothing to do with the banking crisis, greedy people have everything to do with it. Seriously, Perez, stop trying to be a political pundit and go back to what you do best and why I read: silly celebrity gossip

    52

Yesterdays McCain pitch was that this is caused by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans. Wrong again. Fannie and Freddie never, ever made subprime loans. These private compainies that used to trade on the NYSE had very strict standards. They are also victims of the decline in house prices caused by the Alan Greenspan, Phil Gramm, McCain/Bush housing bubble.

  53. 53

According to the Center for Responsive Politics,
the top three U.S. senators getting big Fannie and
    Freddie political bucks were Democrats.
    .
No. 2 was SENATOR BARACK OBAMA,
who as Fox noted had only been in the
Senate four years but still managed to
grab that No. 2 spot ahead of longtime
colleagues John Kerry and Chris Dodd,
    the chairman of the
    Senate Banking Committee.
    .
    On May 25, 2006,
    John McCain spoke on behalf
    of the Federal Housing
    Enterprise Regulatory
    Reform Act of 2005,
    and warned against the
    debacle we are
now facing if it failed to pass.
    .
    McCain warned,
    “If Congress does not act,
    American taxpayers will continue
to be exposed to the enormous risk
that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose
    to the housing market,
    the overall financial system,
and the economy as a whole.”
    .
Barack Obama has the nerve to
blame this mess on the Repubs and
    the mainstream press is only
    too happy to help him.
    Barack Obama and his cohorts
profited in a big way from much of this mess
and Barney Frank should have been keeping
a better eye on things besides his personal affairs,
he is in charge of a group that is supposed to keep
an eye on banks and money matters.

  64. 64

At the helm of fannie mac disaster was a CLINTON appointee - Mr. Chief executive Franklin D. Raines - who walked away with 100 million dollars when it went under -5 years ago, Bush, seeing trouble ahead, tried to reform or terminate these institutions but his legislation was killed by the Democrats and some Republican "do-gooders" and populists in Congress. It's hypocritical of Obama and the Democrats now to try to blame the bankruptcies of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on Bush and right-wing Republicans. Hey DEMS - you guys control the house and the senate - NOT the republicans and you people haven't DONE a thing but BLAME bush.

  65. 65

Ok first of all, get your facts straight, this is not only Bush's fault. If it wasn't for the Clinton administration, we would not be in this mess. Clinton did A LOT of mistakes that Bush had to clean up and it seems as if its only his fault, but before you start pointing fingers, do a little research!

FHA loans are not subprime loans, the root cause of this mess. In fact, in the Memphis area they have seen the small foreclosure rate decline for FHA loans over the past year for which data is available. The foreclosure rate is higher and growing in the middle class and upper income areas, the places where the unregulated subprime loans were issued by the unregulated mortgage brokerage business. So folks, please don't believe the latest series of Republican lies that try to blame Fannie and Freddie. Or ties the black guys up in this. Time.com has a good article on this latest racist rant by the Republicans. Let's protect USA from crooks, racists and other charlatans.

  69. 69

This is a democrat move, actually, seeing as republicans are for the government to be OUT of the economy completely. And this is an awful idea. Inflation is going to skyrocket in the next year and the interest rate is going to rise. And no, this isn't just big business's fault. It's anyone who went out to get a loan they knew they couldn't afford and anyone who gave it to those people and then sold the loan. Unless you know about economics, don't even begin to try to pick sides on this.

  70. maryc says – reply to this

    70

The root of this mess is subprime loans written by the deregulated mortgage industry. The legislation was written by Phil Gramm, McCain chief econ advisor. Fannie and Freddie have NOTHING to do with it, rather they are victims of the housing bubble and could not function properly. I am not trying to defend the GSE because they have need reform for many year. No argument on that. But the Republican have had control of Congress for 16 years. So why have Republicans do something about this?

  71. 71

Why would the people want to help big business? Eat it like everyone else!

  78. 78

Um- Obama was the second largest donation recipient from the bankrupt Fannie/Freddie debacle- the first was christopher dodd. McCain complained about it for years, and no one in congress on EITHER side would change it. The basic economy IS sound- it is the credit market that can take the rest of it down- but if you MUST assign fault it is the fault of the democrats who forced fannie and freddie to give mortgages to the poor- who are POOR for a REASON- who couldn't afford them. And the collusion of realtors and appraisers who jacked up housing costs and then got mortgages for people who couldn't afford them. It is a very complex deal, and the dems have controlled Congress for 43 of the past 50 years- so you better tred lightly. the actual credit card business will fall next due to the people who think a credit card is a loan they will never have to repay.

    Re: Cherry Bomb
You are correct. The Democratic congress who had Freddie and Fannie in their back pocket refused to listen when told that all this was going to backfire. McCain was opposed to it from the beginning and said it would fail, and fail it did. Now the men behind Freddie and Frannie are Obama's economic right hand men.

To cut right to the chase,
I think both parties are corrupt
and both only interested in staying
    in office and retaining power.
    .
The two party system is simply a
two shell shell game, two card monte,
keep both sides attacking each other
to distract the dumb masses so
they will not know who to blame as America's
    freedoms are taken away.
    .
    The Democrats are the "commies",
the repubs are the "commie lites", but
    both corrupt parties are only
    interested in retaining power
    and control.
    .
    Both parties will never allow
a third party standing for freedom.
    .
We keep yelling at each other
just the way the two party system
    intends, it keeps us distracted
    and off balance while our
    freedoms are eroded.
    .
    I belong to neither party.
    I frankly trust neither.

Re: Cherry Bomb – cont-At a campaign rally Wednesday morning in Fairfax, Virginia, John McCain said that the heads of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac ought to give back the millions of dollars they've earned. What about the lobbyists who helped Fannie and Freddie game the system? Maybe McCain can ask them — at the next campaign strategy meeting."

Cherry Bomb, McCain is no different than Obama. He will screw you over too. Politicians=LIARS!!!

    Re: JulesinSD
AMEN!!!!! Bush Bashers forget that the Dems control more of what goes wrong in DC and the country than they want to admit. The housing crisis falls heavily on the heads of the Democratic controlled congress who were greedy and only wanted to make themselves rich. John McCain tried to warn them this would all fail and it did, Obama just sat back and watched it happen.

  93. 93

THE DEMOCRATS ARE THE ONES THAT STARTED THIS PROBLEM, THE CONGRESS IS MAJORITY DEMOCRAT, AND YOU CAN LOOK BACK OVER 10YRS AGO WHEN CLINTON WAS IN OFFICE AND DECIDED EVERY PERSON SHOULD BE ABLE TO OWN A HOME WHETHER THEY COULD AFFORD IT OR NOT.
    -
IT WAS CLINTON THAT LESSENED THE RESTRICTIONS ON GIVING OUT LOANS TO PEOPLE WHO WEREN'T QUALIFIED AND OF COURSE THE POOR RAN OUT TO GET THEIR LOANS THAT THEY NOW CAN'T PAY BACK. WAY TO GO DEMOCRATS, GOOD JOB CLINTON, NOW THE REPUBLICANS AND TAX PAYERS HAVE TO CLEAN UP YOUR HUGE MESS THAT ALMOST CRASHED OUR ECONOMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Wrenn
WHAT PLANET ARE YOU LIVING ON, THATS THE DEMOCRATIC WAY. REPUBLICANS WORK HARD AND PAY OUR BILLS ON TIME. DEMOCRATS ARE THE ONES WHO DECIDED TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THE POOR TOTAKE OUT LOANS THEY KNEW THEY COULDN'T REPAY!
    -
AND GUESS WHO'S TAXES ARE GETTING RAISED, GUESS WHAT TAX PAYERS HAVE TO PAY BACK THE DEBT….THE ONES WHO WORK THEIR ASSES OFF AND PAY BILLS ON TIME AND DON'T TAKE OUT LOANS THEY CAN'T AFFORD. WHILE THE POOR CONTINUE TO GET EVEN MORE FREE HANDOUTS

  96. 96

This total ass hole is selling this country to the highest bidders …all so he and his co-crazies can make all the money they can before Jan,

  99. 99

    Re: violent_hippie – #40. You couldn't be more correct.

List of top 5 campaign donors by candidate:

    BARACK OBAMA
    Goldman Sachs $691,930
    University of California $611,207
    Citigroup Inc $448,599
    JPMorgan Chase & Co $442,919
    Harvard University $435,769

    JOHN MCCAIN
    Merrill Lynch $298,413
    Citigroup Inc $269,251
    Morgan Stanley $233,272
    Goldman Sachs $208,395
    JPMorgan Chase & Co $179,975

One party or the other doesn't OWN corruption. It is pervasive in our government. It is a CANCER. We, the American people, need to wake up and hold our elected officials accountable. ALL of them.

Re: arrora – Once again please check your facts. Is is the Republicans and McCain who deregulated the financial system to let the crooks lie to us about our loans. Last time I got a loan at Washington Mutual they tried a switch on me, I caught the lie and made them change. The escrow lady was suprised, "Nobody reads the documents" she said.
Throw the bumbs out, vote Obama
