Recap: Travis Barker AND DJ AM Critically Injured in South Carolina Plane Crash, 4 Dead

As we reported earlier, Travis Barker and celebrity music spinner, DJ AM were critically injured after their Learjet 60 crashed during takeoff from South Carolina's Columbia Metropolitan Airport, just before midnight on Friday. The plane was headed for Van Nuys, CA.
The former Blink 182 drummer, Baker, and DJ AM are in critical condition and being treated for severe burns at an Augusta, Georgia burn center.
Barker was transported by ground to the burn facility from the site of the crash.
DJ AM was airlifted.
Four people died in the crash.
The deceased have been identified as pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, CA co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, CA, Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, CA, and Charles Still, 25 of Los Angeles, CA.
Chris was Travis's assistant.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.
The plane crash is still under investigation, however, during a press conference late Saturday morning a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the plane overran the airstrip and proceeded to run into a number of the airport's lights and antenna.
Air traffic controllers reportedly "saw sparks coming from the runway" before the crash. Investigators don't know if that was from the aircraft or its engines.
A South Carolina resident named William Owens was driving down a highway next to the airport when he said he saw a fireball go across the road. He told local TV station WIS News 10:
"I didn't know what I had seen — it was maybe 800 feet in front of me, but as I approached it closer though I made out a fire. By then I was able to see the tail of the jet and I recognized it as a jet," Owens said.
Owens then described what he saw as he tried to make it to the wreckage.
"It's in flames and the fuel is running across the road and I had to cross the fuel to get to the two guys that seemed to have been dumped on the highway," Owens said.
Owens said the two men (Travis and DJ AM!) were running around and stripping down to extinguish themselves. He then asked the men if there was anyone else on board the plane and they said four more were with them.
"We turned to the jet to try and see if there was anything we could do, but immediately, there was nothing anyone could do," Owens said.
Travis and AM were in Columbia, South Carolina Friday night for a T-Mobile sponsored concert at Five Points, a popular shopping district.
Musicians Perry Farrell and Gavin DeGraw were also part of the festivities. Their reps confirmed to us that they WERE NOT on the plane that crashed.
So sad, sad, sad.

If Travis has been transported to a burn center, he's toast, literally. So sad. He's probably so burned he won't have a normal life again if he lives through it. Let's pray this isn't the case though…

The only other 'updated' report that I could find was from stupid TMZ and they said-"TMZ has learned Travis Barker has been burned from his waste down, but he is expected to survive to plane crash.
DJ AM's face was severely burned and is been tended to right now.
We're also told the tragedy is all the worse — Chris Baker, Travis' assistant on "Meet the Barkers," was married recently and has a new baby." Still it is VERY sad……..
Its a good sign that they were that alert after getting out of the plane. I think they will both be ok.
so i just read that dj am's face is severely burned. the poor guy has overcome a lot in his life and now this. tragic.

Oh man, I really hope they get well soon. This is just too sad for words. This is why I would never, ever get on a small plane like that, all those plane crash stories have freaked me out ever since Aaliyah died in 2001. RIP Sarah, James Chris and Charles.

So sad. I have a theory, and I'm not trying to be humorous, that anytime two or more celebrities take a private plane anywhere, they jinx the flight and crash. This happens way to often to just be my own superstition.

This crap is getting out of hand. At least once a week a jet skids off the runway. I say it's tire fatigue. These two men are blessed they made it out alive. Bet they never fly again.

That's so crazy and sad. It seemed like they were just playing at the VMAs. Hopefully they are okay. I heard Travis and AM are in critical condition.

There are so many musicians who have died in plane crashes, and I am glad they're not among them; my sympathy to the families of those who died, and kudos to DJ AM, Travis, and Mr Owens for their attempt to rescue the others in spite of their shock (all) and injuries (DJ AM and Travis).
This airport is literally right down the road from our home, and 302 is the highway I take every day to work…so many days you would be driving along, and there would be a jet practically right over your car, as it's landing or taking off. When I found out that this happened, I was shocked and saddened. May the two remaining survivors fight on. R.I..P

Shiocking and very sad. I fly constantly and you become desensitized to the possibility of a crash. I cannot imagine what those poor people were feeling as this happened. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. My heart really goes out to the survivors too, as the healing will be terrrible and difficult, the emotional pain will probably remain the rest of their lives. So very sad.

small aircraft seem to me to have a ton of crashes and general unreliability each year. whether its design flaw or pilot error there are just a lot of people dying from them lately.

i feel so bad or DJ AM. He had to overcome a lot of issues about his physical appearance (being overweight) and now his face is burned? THis is just wrong wrong wrong. But these celebrities do too much, travel and jet set and you just increase the odds of something happening to ya.
I hope AM is okay, and that these are just rumors and that his burns are not that bad. they said severely burned but not 3rd degree. so hopefully he will heal. travis barker was burned from the waist down so let's hope that again these burns are not very bad.

Just to bring things into prespective for everyone, the palm of your hand is considered to be 1% of your body surface. When you hear that someone was burned 30% of their body, think 30 palms…it's a lot of surface area and it doesn't take much to add up quickly.
Generally speaking, once you start getting 50% and higher, the odds are against you for survival. It's not so much the burns that will kill you, it's the secondary infections that result from severe burns. The skin is one of the primary defences against infection and once burned, it loses that ability to protect.
In this case, where the burns are likely extensive and severe, the problem is that the body will lose a large amount of fluid quickly…as we all know, the body is made up of a lot of water (Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water, blood contains 95% water, body fat contains 14% water and bone has 22% water)…what happens in severe burns is that it disrupts the blood circulation and causes problems with the body's salt balance.

I truly hope the two of them will survive…it all depends on to what percentage their skin is burnt…..if it s "just" mainly the facial area of Travis, he s a good chance for survival.
By the way, a few hours ago 60 people burnt to death, hundreds of peaple injured (among them 3 Germans) with the hotel still on fire and in danger of collapsing - in a bomb blast at the Islamabad Marriott Hotel in Pakistan where your US soldiers are fighting in a further senseless war….
I thought Barker was already a horrible burn victim with that ostrich neck. And a celebrity Dj? Who cares?
