Emmys Disaster - Least Watched Ceremony In History!
Filed under: TV News > Awardz
You could tell from the moment the five reality TV hosts took the stage it was going to be bad.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sunday night's Emmy presentation was the lowest rated EVER in its history.
No surprise. It was painful to watch!!!
We wanted to change the channel 10 minutes into the show.
12.2 million viewers tuned in last night, which was 18% lower than last year's crappy total.
THR also pointed out that the ceremony 'was largely derided by critics, who found the presentation's pacing off kilter and focus on unscripted shows awkward and unfunny.'
Here's a little taste of what the critics had to say:
USA Today: "It was hideously awful from start to harried finish, dragged down by five amateurish reality anchors who would have been unwelcome as guests, let alone hosts."
MSNBC: "The Emmy telecast offers quality that's dismally lower than nearly anything else on television. "American Idol" and "Dancing with the Stars" deserve plenty of criticism, but even their worst episodes — typically their results shows, as they lack content and waste time — are more engaging and entertaining than the Emmys … The Emmys need to dump their producers and directors, hiring a team who knows how to produce popular television."
AP: "Are the TV writers still on strike?"
Zap2It: "The entire gambit of letting the Emmy nominated hosts handle the show proved a dud on nearly every level. None of them were funny and because there were so many of them and each of their egos had to be stroked, the bloat kicked in almost instantly."
Fresno Bee: "You could take all the elephants in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, feed them rancid chili and rotten boiled eggs for a month, and they could not create a bigger stinker … The night was supposed to be a tribute to 60 years of television. It ended up being a reminder that people grow old."
Ouch!
Should the Academy just do away with the Emmy telecast? No.
Is there any possible way to make it better? Any suggestions???
Bring back Ellen as host!

well hell, I had no idea it was on….
I bet it was Rumor Willises fault….she was miss golden globe or whatever right??? we'll blame it on her…
I didn't even know it was going to be on. Maybe they should have promoted it.
Because people can't stand to watch celebrities give awards to themselves for being so great. Yawn….
it put me to sleep like a lullaby.
I didn't even bother watching it. I think the Emmys are always boring.. i think its for the older audiences. I normally watch the red carpet for the fashion or whent here's a good performer.
it was one of the most aweful things i've ever witnessed
Re: abercorey – Same here, not that I would have watched!
i agree
if you don't really watch tv, this "ceremony" ain't going to do much for you.
fogot to say that i don't watch much tv
C'mon, it's the Emmys! All I care is who wore what.
Hell–why would anyone watch that when there was a much better show at Yankee Stadium.
An end to a classic. So sad!
Surprise, Surprise I didn't even know they were on!!
Put perez on stage and beat him with a cane for three hours! i'll watch that shit.
is true. i almost change the channel in the first 10 mins.
They should get rid of all the boring awards in the middle. I also agree with Alice…I think it's nothing more than self congratulatory BS. Nobody watches 30 Rock and it gets a slew of awards??
I say, Perez should host next year…maybe I could do the red carpet, but it was painful to watch, I ended watching TiVo'd episodes of Entourage and Disney Channel…and is it just me or is Jeremy Piven HOT! and the highlight of last nights Emmys…
Maybe because the Emmys are USELESS to the rest of America??? Just a guess.
Thats cause it was on against Sunday night football and because it sucked, i tried watching but lost interest with oprah
i didn't watch it!
hAAHAHA!! Maybe the bitch ass writers will take the hint and not go on strike and take it out on the viewers!!! I think people just got fed up with the strike and the fact we had to watch CRAP for months on end.
I can't recall the last time I watch the Emmy's….it must be at least 15 years, or so. They used to be so much fun to watch. But, considering that I have never seen any of the shows/movies that you listed as 'winners' (in a previous post)…I didn't miss anything.
I was watching cowboys, packers last night.
The TV 'season' lasted all of 4 weeks (thanks again, writers) so why would we expect the awards show to not suck. Also, reality TV has drained all the creativity and entertainment out of the television.
It was boring. The red carpet part of ceremonies is exciting but who cares who wins what. They're all good at what they do - to a degree - or they wouldn't be in demand. It was a yawn fest. And I agree - they should have a main host, like Billy Crystal or Samuel L. Jackson, remain on stage the entire night. It wasa Hodge Podge city.
uhm yeah srsly no one cares bout the emmys. especially when its now filled with reality bullshit. why dont they just kiss each others asses in a private ceremony
I don't watch because the people, who in my opinion, win who do not deserve it. How could Rainn Wilson not have won for The Office? How could Hugh Laurie not have won for House? Or Michael Hall for Dexter? I was RELIEVED when The Sopranos stopped airing - now they are just giving it to the wrong people, again.
Plus, it has turned into a political forum. I don't give a rat's ass who these people are voting for.
They didn't afvertise it very well, I didn't even know when it was on til it was over, they should have tried to copy cat the VMA's
Oopsie. Advertise is the word I was trying to type!!
and that's the reason why i didn't watch it…
Here's how bad the Emmy's were… I didn't even know they were on last night?!!!!???! What kind of promotion did they do?
Re: JennL – Jeremy is soooooooo HOT! agreed
)
How can the Emmys ever compete with a Cowboys/Pack game??? GO COWBOYS!!!! 3-0 BABY!!!
It was horrific, and all the stupid lefty hollywood RICH people and their snarky remarks was so annoying, we get it the president is dumb, and you all love Barack, ok enough said. now go back to your expensive homes in your limo, after your million dollar party to congratulated yourselves on how important your "work" is, and quit acting as if the American people should listen to your retarded political "wisdom".
The guy from dancing with the stars or Mandel would have been good alone, but who had the bright idea to put all 5 on stage together? This is the guy that should be looking for a JOB today. Seacrest is about as funny as a broken leg. Heidi Klum Please, what a horrible opener.
Who gives a damn about watching rich, overpaid jerks who pick up thousands of dollars of free goodies at gift suites on TV? You can read the up-to-the-minute of who wins online and see the fashions on People. Give up the swag suites already! This economy sucks big-time and we're all in danger of living out of shopping carts.
It's no surprise the Emmy's sucked. I haven't been excited about going to the theater in years and I can't remember the last good TV show I've watched. The entertainment industry sucks shit these days.
Simple solution: ATTENTION NETWORKS! Write better Shows for TV! I am not sure but I still think that the writers strike is on.
People will watch the Emmy's if show's that entertain would get nominated. What happened to nominations for NCIS, Criminal Minds, Some of the CSI's etc. These shows have great viewer numbers but are ignored for the award shows. Get your ACT together NETWORKS, the internet is becomming the choice of entertainment for many. . . . . WAKE UP.
Yeah, bring back Ellen or someone funny as host. How about the funniest person in the world — Craig Ferguson, and don't write scripts for him… let him wing it. Also, PLEASE STOP the we-hate-Bush crowd from making their annoying, repetitive, inane comments. We KNOW you all hate the war and Bush already. So boring and predictable. Just stop it already. I really hated the show last night. Just abysmal.
AMEN! I haven't even checked to see who won, because I could give a rats ass!
Who wants to watch a bunch of puffed-up pompous asses pat themselves on the back? I watched M*A*S*H reruns last night.
I changed it about 2 minutes into it. I saw Sarah Silverman talk and give an award and then i got this embarrassed feeling about how retarded it was and had to change.
Bring back Ellen!
The only funny part was when Ricky Gervais was on stage. Maybe he should host.
Leave the comments about politics OUT OF IT!!!! I don't give a rats' ass about what they think…….Just be appreciative of the award and move on……
the show sucked ass. i only watch real celebs aka the oscars lol
My suggestion: Tell all the pompous, arrogant, out of touch, idiot celebs to keep their idiotic political views to themselves. No one cares what over paid ex-waiters have to say about who we should vote for. It would be nice if one of them had their own opinion.
The Dallas/Green Bay game and Yankees/Orioles game were much more exciting and fun. As soon as the 5 hosts came on and said nothing, I knew it would suck.
I actually watched the whole thing. Compared to last year I think it was a lot better. Just don't let Ryan host next year. There were too many hosts! Ellen or Cobert would make great hosts. I liked the little dialogue between Steve Carelle and Ricky Gervais. Try having a full season of programing and maybe people will watch the Emmys! I also agree with the comment that none of the good shows were nominated.
Yeah, it was a HOT mess. They really dropped the ball this year. It's like they threw this whole thing together in 10 minutes.
it could have been better but i enjoyed it. that 'nothing' bit was whack. they could have done better then that. julia looked pissed she didnt win.lol i love her!!!
i was rooting for 'curb your enthusiam'. there should have been more nominations for larry david.
I never saw one commercial promoting the event…also not a good idea to schedule at the same time as MNF. I was tuned in to the cowboys vs packers.
don rickles was the best part of that show - he may be old, but his mind is still quick and he didn't bother following a script. he cracked me up. otherwise the show sucked.
Regular people are turning away from hollywood stars because they have to open their big mouths & give their political views. Regular people don't want to hear from them or watch them.
they should DEFINITLEY bring back ellen!!!!!
I think much of the blame is on the horrible hosts.
Rickkles(spelling?), Colbert, Stewart, and Cerall (Carell, I can never spell it right). Should host, well atleast someone comedic. Ellen was indeed amazing. As someone else said, I am sick of the political stuff, I watch for entertainment not for an endorsement speech
So boring, you could ee people in the audience nodding off, where are all the comedy writers? When we get Obama as President they will be released from where ever they are being held. They didm't advertise it, what was that all about?
Yeah, it was crap because they started off with NOTHING…and then shortly there after, Michael Emerson did NOT win for best supporting actor in a drama. What kind of crap is that? Michael Emerson as Ben Linus on LOST, he is phenomenal! It was pretty predictable. Josh Groban was good though.
Wow…last night was actually the first night that I've ever consciously watched the Emmys. I think having that 5 different hosts who everyone sees on crappy reality TV was what killed it. Ryan Seacrest? Come on, they could have done so much better! And who the hell gives out awards for "Best Reality TV Host?" Does anyone really deserve an award for that? That's like being the smartest dumb guy.
They should just have had Ryan Seacrest as host, sorry to say that Heidi Klum is in no way a good host of a live event, she sucked big-time as did Howie Mandel and Tom Whateverhisnameis. Jeff Probst was ok.
You want to approve the Emmys? Try nominating shows that people actually watch and are actually fuckin' good!
Every one of those shows nominated sucked. Was there "The Wire", the best damn show ever??? No (too many blacks). Was Pushing Daisies or any actor from Criminal Intent nominated??? No. Who gives a fuck about Tina Fey except Tina Fey and her cronies. The show sucked because no one cares about network TV anymore. Just alot of BS to blog about.
Hopefully the same will happen with the Oscars. Then Hwood will realize that all of this gladhanding, backslapping self promotion is alienating their audience. Then maybe "stars" and "directors" will shut up already about their political viewpoints and actually entertain us.
Re: vickster – Yeah, I watch the football game too. The Emmys suck and the people there sucked too.
Re: Les – Michael C. Hall not winning for "Dexter" is a travesty. The Wire getting nothing for acting is a travesty. 14 nominations for "Mad Men" which NO ONE watches is a travesty. The Emmys is a travesty.
I did indeed watch that horror of a night. The concept of their 60th anniversary was great it was just the hosts that ruined the entire night. I do not know why they have decided to stop hiring REAL comedians to do the show. Did they not learn from last years Emmys with having Ryan Seacrest host how horrid it was. Why bring him back only to be twice as worse and with four other idiots. I can give you five better hosts then the five last night: Ellen, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Jon Stewart, and Whoppie Goldberg. They have been some of the best hosts that any major awards show has had. I religiously watch awards show and i have never ever wanted to change the channel so fast. lets just hope that next year will be third times the charm. hopefully!
I honestly didn't think it was THAT bad
I mean the hosting was kinda lame. howie mandel was sorta alright.
buut the content wasn't bad. ricky gervaise & don rickles were great.
that's because the hosts sucked the big one. and the winners were on shows that are unwatched..
I haven't read through all the other comments, but possibly one of the reasons for low ratings may be that the Yankee's last home game at Yankee Stadium was also on TV at the same time. There was a very nice pre-show and then the actual game started around 830pm est so just maybe that had something to do with it?!
That being said about the baseball game being on, I am SICK of watching all the award shows that the industry has!! NO other occupation awards itself as often as the entertainment industry..again and again and again!!! YAWN!
maybe those lame celebretards should keep their personal political views to themselves and just talk about what they are there for….idiots!
ya! bring back ellen as host
i didn't even know it was on last night…
they didn't promote it right
i would watch them or anything if i had power! Ike destroyed that!
I turned it off the minute Colbert felt compelled to ridicule the republican party. I watch the emmys for mindless entertainment and to see how my favorite shows did. I do not need a lecture from ANY celebrity who earns so much money that how he is taxed, why he is taxed and who his tax dollars benefit will never matter. I am sick to death of hollywood celebs telling the rest of us how to vote and who to vote for. When you make $10,000,000 per picture and Uncle Sam takes $4,000,000 away that still leaves you with a whole lot of money, so celebrities telling the rest of us who to vote for makes no sense. They have NO concept of our reality. I got disgusted and turned it off.
Re: Les – I soooo agree with you. that is why I turned them off
Re: ERRRBOOO – agreed again. I hate liberal celebs who make toooo much money telling the rest of us to funds programs for losers and drug addicts wtih our tax dollars. They don't mind because after taxes they are still rich..we are not!
No fucking DUH! It was up against "Dexter", "Strange Love" and the MIGHTY MOTHERFUCKING DALLAS COWBOYS!!! My TiVo could only handle the game on NBC and the other 2 shows on Showtime and HBO. Sorry Emmys. Maybe next year..
The emmy's were on sunday?
Like, cable shows and the internet bother to report it,
because it's some sort of old school network shiz.
I think if they had better and younger hosts they would get a lot more views.. like the Jonas Brothers
Buncha libs patting themselves on their collective asses, doing nothing for society except for presenting eye candy all the while complaining about how much they think their country sucks! Who wants to watch a bunch of whiners anyways?
I reaaly don't care about the award ceremony. Someone won an award, good for them but i don't care.
