It's Not Just An American Problem

A school shooting at a vocational college in Finland on Tuesday has left nine people dead and two others seriously injured.

Sad.

The shootings occurred almost a year after Pekka-Eric Auvinen, 18, shot dead eight people including the headmistress, at a high school in the southern town of Jokela, before shooting himself.

So sad.

    so sad.

  2. 2

For who doesn't know alongside USA Finland among "advanced" countries is the most liberal in selling guns. So no surprise

  3. 3

Sad Sad Sad…. where are their parents

  4. 4

    wait until
    I lose,
    there will
    be alot
    more
    school
    shootings
    looting
    rioting
    all hell will break loose.

  5. 5

    9 people died.

  6. 6

Fan, känner med er kära grannar!

  7. 7

I live in Finland and I am so pissed on hearing these news. Few years ago high schooler killed 7 people and injured 70 with self made bomb in mall near where I live. Basically the problem is easy access to guns and culture of bullying in schools that creates these lunatics

  8. 8

A bum shot a man downtown here in Sac yesterday because he wouldn't give her money and told her to get a job! CRAZY SHIZ!

  9. 9

The man who did it was apparently an adult, 22 years old, so lets not blame the parents, he is old enough to carry the responsibilty of his actions by himself. But it´s sad, our country is in shock right now, just fearing there´s more to come. :(

  10. 10

Scared the shit out of me when I found out today while in class.. ( It's all over CNN, Reuters and BBC) The topics at school where : "Well, wasn't this kind of expected?" and " So, this is how it feels in the USA"… Everybody's in a shock…

Strangely enough life carries on… RIP to all the deceased and I wish the best to the victims and their families. BTW: Something should be done ’bout the gun rights in Finland, 'eh?

Yes, there are lots of people who read Perez daily in Finland, including me. This school shooting is so tragic. Like robdin said, Finland is one the most liberal countries in selling guns. They say it's mainly because of the long tradition of hunting, but this really should be reconsidered now. So sad. :(

  12. 12

R.I.P to the deceased, and hopefully the others will pull through without any horrible, long-lasting problems.

  13. 13

Words can't even explain how horrible this is - not even a year has gone by since the last school shooting here in Finland! Clearly there is a too easy access to guns, but what's even more troubling is the fact that kids apparently feel the need to express their anger in this way. It's not a new thing, school shootings have happened before, but I think for us here in Finland it's sort of a wake up call that it doesn't just happen 'elsewhere', we're dealing with all the same issues.
What's also seriously disturbing is that the police actually had the gunman in custody yesterday for interrogations about his violent videos on YouTube, where he practices his shooting and says "You're all going to die". His license was not removed, he wasn't deemed dangerous enough. There has to be harder restrictions on gunaccess! I for one and so deeply saddened and shocked by all of this.. but at the same time I realize that someone else out there will probably see this as something 'cool' and reinact it. And that's what we need to work to prevent.

  14. 14

The gunman had just died at a hospital from the self-inflicted injuries. He shot himself in the head.

  15. 15

these aren't the kind of stories I come here to read, please post something else!

  16. 16

Newest reports say the number of casualties is 11.

  17. 17

Finland's gun laws are apparently, very lax. I was watching a CNN report on this shooting a few hours ago and if you are 15 years of age, you can obtain a gun with parental consent. Just like that. Finland also comes in third in terms of gun ownership behind America and Yemen. However, what i find creepy is that both Auvinen and this gunman here posted warnings of their plans on youtube around 72 hours before the actual tragedy.

    18

occasionally, it might happen in other countries… but school shootings is an american trademark

  19. 19

I'm Finnish too, and still in high school, and this is just shocking and alarming. I talked about this with my friends, and we don't even understand why people are given guns so easily - and on the other hand, why would people NEED hand guns? They're not even used in hunting.
Everytime this happens, people just think 'oh gee, what could be done with this?' and no-one ever does anything. What about psychological tests for people who try to get a gun license?

  20. 20

Now it´s 11 people died including the murder.

    This is sad……

My son and I went to Finland last year (Helsinki, to be exact)…and, it was one of THE most beautiful, laid back, friendliest Countries we have ever had the privilege of visiting. We can't wait to go back.
As a gun-owning (for home protection only) American….I have mixed views on gun control. I was raised in a household with a gun (again, for security), and then I married into a family that had an entire arsenal for big game hunting. In fact, where I live now…the parents are able to purchase guns, cross/compound bows (and all the ammo/arrows that they can carry) for their children (provided that their child has completed the hunter safety course, at the age of 12+). Whether it is right or wrong, I don't know. But, I am quite adept at target practice, my son can shoot a bullseye at 50 yards (with his crossbow)…and, the ONLY gunshot casualties (in my area) within the past 6 years, have been hunters who have accidentally shot themselves while ascending/descending into their tree stands.
My deepest, heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

  22. 22

Hi from Finland, I just had to write in to say the worst thing is this guy was in POLICE QUESTIONING the day before the shooting and they saw NO REASON to take his gun away!!! He posted a video of himself with guns on youtube on friday and therefore was taken into questioning…I can't believe the finnish police. this just leaves me heartbroken. peace to you all.

Re: Viola78 – That is VERY interesting to know, Viola. Thank you. I didn't know that he was perceived as THAT much of a threat, to warrant the police stepping in because of a video on a website. That is something that was not posted on yahoo news, when I read it this morning.
Please keep us posted on the new developments, in your part of the World. I, for one, would appreciate it.

I'm from Finland too.. I live in Helsinki so Kauhajoki is quite far away from here. Still, this awful happening is touching whole Finland. I think only one who doesn't know about this are the people who are in Big Brother house right now.. still it touches all of us young people in school… i can't believe it's happening in Finland. This is such a small country and… i don't know. People are different. But i hope that you're thinking that EVERYONE in finland are like that gun guy.. NO WAY.

  26. Ellu says – reply to this

    26

Re: Ellu – sorry i mean i hope that you DON'T think that everyone in finland are like that gun man.. cause that's totally not true :) bad english sorry :)

  27. 27

"Gun Free Zones", like schools, tell all these nut-jobs "go on a murdering rampage HERE, because there is no one to stop you.
    .
I know many want to start banning guns. Well guess what, we've banned rape, murder, and robbery, but they all happen anyway.
    .
Moreover, didn't any of you gun-grabbers ever open a history book? Violent wars and murder have been going on since the time of man — long before guns were even invented.
    .
Either disarm yourself and be a victim, or arm yourself and fight back. You decide for yourself, but don't make that decision for the rest of society.

  28. 28

I live in Finland and yes, this is sad but this is not what happens every day. We are changing the laws on guns as we speak.

And the number is 11 Perez, 11 died.

  29. 29

Sorry my bad english, but I just wanted to say that this is a big shock here in Finland, people are sad and confused for this. There is actually 11 people dead. It`s also scary, how many times this could happen, it`s not even year ago when there was other school shooting. It`s easy to look someone to blame afterwords, but there is clearly things which need to make better. They now are maybe making harder restrictions for getting guns. They (politics?) should have done it before, it is wrong to give gun for so young, and especially hand-gun. People have guns in Finland, specially hunters, but those who don`t hunt, should need to keep their guns somewhere "safe place". I mean those who really hobbies shooting, guns should be in shooting-club closet behind locks. Those should be something to keep eye on. Hunters also when it`s not hunting season.

Police should have more power to take guns from these people, if there is any doubt they will use it wrong, those videos was that kind of reason. And it`s true, many young people are depressed, there are lots of mental issues in this country, and it`s also hard when some of them don`t get any help when they ask for getting it. Not enough money, not enough employees. It`s scary to be a student, what if it happens again? I can`t even imagine how the parents handle it..
Violence is growing and it`s scary.
    This is way too sad.

    Osanottoni omaisille.

  30. 30

This just makes me so mad: Police questioned the shooter on Monday about the YouTube video, which showed him shooting at a firing range. On the video, the gunman says "you die next" before firing three times at the camera. However, the police officer on duty decided there was no need to terminate his gun licence. The gunman was given a "temporary licence" for a .22-calibre firearm last month.
I mean who in their right mind thinks that's normal if he got the gun LAST MONTH and had videos saying "you die next"????
The latest on the news is that they found a letter from his apartment where it said that he had planned this since 2002 and that he hates society and then goes on saying "the answer is Walther" (meaning his Walther P22 gun).
I live only 60 miles away from where this happened and yeah, of course it makes you wonder if this has happened twice in 10 months…

Am an American happily living in Finland. This is a peaceful country of honest people, violence like this is extremely rare and shocking here. Both shooters, this year and last, were inspired by Columbine videos on You Tube, so while it isn't just America's problem, it sure seems like we started the trend. Also, gun ownership, while high in Finland, is much more regulated and controlled than in the U.S., the bureaucracy to own a gun much more tedious and responsible. These events are so rare here that there are no metal detectors in schools or bomb threats or anything, so when something like this does happen, we are all just in shock. I just hope that this trend goes out of style really soon. Very sad.

  32. 32

Am I understanding this correctly — several people are correcting Perez because they want to point out that since the poor killer died, we need to mourn for eleven (11) people, not ten?
    .
Well at least I see why the police let the guy go — Finland is filled with a bunch of crazy people.
    .
Note to crazy pacifist in Finland: You don't need to count the killer. You don't need to feel bad about the death of the killer. In fact, you should NOT feel badly about the killer being dead. Finally, if the killer had lived, you should have been calling for the killer to be executed.
    .
What does it matter, Europe is going to be run by the Muslims in a couple decades anyway.

  33. 33

The new number is 11. The shooter and a victim died at the hospital.

  34. 34

"several people are correcting Perez because they want to point out that since the poor killer died, we need to mourn for eleven (11) people, not ten?"

-No, killer was sick. The number was just a fact. Nobody mourns the killer, except the parents of course, who are not guilty what happened.

"Well at least I see why the police let the guy go — Finland is filled with a bunch of crazy people."

-No it`s not, there are lots of more crazy people in America. Finland is a small country so it`s easy to think that everyone are crazy if someones are.

Just to know, those young men were inspired by American videos on youtube (Columbine). Of course I dont`t blame americans but that youtube and other websites should remove anykind of those videos and chats of humanhaters. It`s not healthy for everyone.

Many finnish people are upset about we`re taking model of USA almost everyway soon, people don`t like the way this country is going. They are copying lifestyle from americans (not all americans of course), and that is one reason why here is lots of wrong things. Since the government had done it, lots of things are started going wrong.

    Peace all over the world.

  35. 35

I love Finland its so peaceful happy and organised. Its a country where violence is rare and if it is occured it is promptly stopped by the police, which is why the crime rate is higher not because of more crime but criminals cant get away with much. This crime is terrible and stupid. Yes Finland has a lot of guns but it is not used in th sense of security, its for hunting. You would never imagine or think of someone walking down a street with a gun in their possesion. So for a intentional and cruel attack to occur in Finland is shocking but its not representative. And while many of us finns are mourning the dead, could you please not insult our country by calling it crazy, or giving us observations from your five hour stay in Helsinki. Finland is a safe country but in the last few years we had three shocking and horrible incidences that ring us to shame, and we very much influences by the columbine massacre. Murderers are not representative of our country.

  36. 36

I think we should NOT blame the guns or Finlands "Gun-law". We should blame Finlands poor mental healthcare system. Many, many children and teenager are not able to get the mental care what they need.

AND If someone want to shoot people… He WILL get the gun, somehow he will. I mean, drugs are totaly illegal but it's not difficult to buy them. Even if killer won't get the gun from the legal way, he/she will get it from the black market. So that "We have to change our gunlaw-thing" is such a bullshit!

Finlands goverment makes me wanna screeeeaaamm!

  37. 37

    Re: finnish girl
    .
I'm not saying Finland is filled with crazy people because of this killer, I'm saying Finland is filled with crazy people because of the crazy comments written by Fins here on this board.
    .
You, yourself, sound crazy. While I appreciate you don't blame guns, I see you blame television, American videos, and American culture.

  38. 38

    Re: finnish girl
    .
Listen Finish girl, are you saying Fins are all weak minded and can't help but fall victim to American television?
    .
Or are you saying Fins are as strong minded as anyone else but that the force of American culture is just too strong to resist?
    .
Well if that's true, those freaking crazy Muslims wouldn't be trying to kill or convert everyone. Instead they would be getting drunk on Red Bull and Vodka, enjoying some internet porn, and trying to make more money to get a nice house and car.
    .
Unfortunately, too many of the fundamentalist Muslims go to England and get paid by the British government to plot the destruction of the English. If they've accomplished anything in the near east in several hundred years it has been hidden from the rest of the world.

  39. 39

    Re: finnish girl
    .
No, sorry babe, American culture is not that powerful. Just take a trip to southern California and turn on the radio and look around and you'll be convinced Mexican culture is taking over the world.
    .
The bottom line is that there have been crazy killers since the dawn of man. Pick up a bloody history book would you, and stop blaming things like music videos. If this killer were crazy he could have watched a spider kill a bug and get all the influence he needed to suck the life out of other people.

  40. 40

    Re: finnish girl
    .
And please stop saying 11 people died. Ten people died. That's it. One animal was put down, but you insult the victims if you equate that scumbag with "people". His name shouldn't be mentioned and he should disappear in a cloud of anonymity before some copy-cat killer thinks its his chance for fame.
    .
Why don't you write your politicians and demand that normal minded, strong willed, young men in your vocational schools be armed so that next time crazy killers like this can be shot immediately like the dogs they are.
    .
More gun laws only stop the people that follow the law. Murderers don't follow the law. That's why people keep robbing banks even though bank robbing is illegal.
    .
So you can choose to disarm your honest citizens and be victims like this recent tragedy as the bad people will still arm themselves. Or you can arm yourselves and destroy those who would destroy you.
    .
Instead, most crazy folks will demand we try to "understand" what this nut was upset about. That would be dandy. The next time innocent people are being murdered at least they'll die understanding the killer a little more.

  41. 41

Re: Chevvy – True, the mental health care in Finland is very hard to reach. And I don't think that all the doctors should wait for troubled people to contact them but they should offer their help more openly. There must be some way to improve our system!

  42. 42

    This is sad.
Finland should do something with gun laws.
I live in Finland and when something like this happens the whole country is going crazy, naturally.
I can't believe the same thing happend for the second time in a year.
And now there is a bomb warnings and stuff in schools around Finland, because other lunatics like the shooter wants to do something…

You know, before the Columbia thing this wasn't happening here just after that because it was a kind of support for all crazy people who don't have every thing okay. This shooting thing doesn't prove that we are not smart you know. Finland's teenagers are #1 on PISA school testing for several subjects. And this shooter was like 22 years old! And the students were adults (18 and up).

After reading ydur's #18 comment, I did a search of Worldwide school shootings. Since 1996, there have been about 56 shootings…13 of which were committed outside of the US. While I agree that these horrible crimes are prevalent in the US…I would hardly call them an "American trademark".
Mental instability, hate, greed and/or indifference are the main reasons that crimes are committed (regardless of the weapon used…or, the geographic location). Until those reasons become a thing of the past….senseless killings, around the globe, will continue, I'm afraid.
    Have a great day, all!

  45. 45

in the papers and news here in finland they said the man killed 10 people. 2 men and 8 women, and then himself, so including him 11 people died, right?
one thing that pisses me off with all this is the fact that everybody seems to blame what's happened on that it's too easy to get a gun in finland. Wake up! if your this crazy killer-dude i bet you'll get yourself a gun no matter if it's in leagal ways or not. A thing that also got my attention is that this guy had planned this for SIX years, and still no one had noticed that he would've been in any way weird. His friends were all so chocked and told all the papers ’bout how friendly and outgoing this guy was. Guess he got everyone fooled. But my point is that if he's had his friends fooled for this long its no wonder that the police didnt notice anything suspicious about him, so im not sure you should blame the policy who gave him tha licence and had him in for hearing the day before too much. A man like that isn't so stupid that he'd show it. But of course i dont know all the background information so i can be wrong.

  46. 46

A thing that people should pay more attention to and be more worried about than the gun-licences is the young peoples mental health problems. How come that according to so many survies finnish teens are facing great depression and mental problems and nothing seems to be done? And even though i havent noticed that much bullying in the schools, of course that excists too, but i dont think its the only thing that creates the teenagers mental problems, some people just go crazy or get these stupid ideas from somewhere else.
This is just what im thinking, not really sure where im heading with all this.. :)

  47. 47

and one more thing, just because there are a couple crazy guys here its not like there's something wrong with the whole nation. But it's like of course there are some sick people in finland too, just like in every other country..

  48. 48

    Re: cartman
god you're stupid comments should just be erased !
The killer was obviously mentally disturbed, he was sick you know ! maybe he couldnt help the fact that its who he was. im not trying to defend him, but he died too, and he was a human being. Thats just a fact.
And its spelled "Finn" and "Finnish", with two N:s please (:
and what you say about that all finns would be crazy becouse of the comments written here, aaarghhh i dont even know what to say !
It's not like I'd say that your entire nation must be stupid because you fucking are !

  49. 49

damn…that's sad.that's like the columbine high school shooting.

  50. 50

    Re: asdfghj
    .
Hey asdfghj, when you decide to appoint yourself the spelling police you shouldn't write things like "so many survies finnish teens are facing great depression."
    .
The word is "surveys" genius. And "finnish" should be capitalized.
    .
And anyone from Finland who thinks I'm being literal when I say Finland is filled with crazy people and who literally believes I think every single person in Finland is crazy — is a crazy idiot who goes a long way to help prove my point.
    .
And Ellu, to be clear, I don't think everyone in Finland is stupid. But about half of the population of every country is not as bright as the other half.
    .
I am simply stunned that so many people feel compelled to count this waste of life killer among the dead. I really do believe the people who feel it important to do that truly have a mental disease.
    .
Your bleeding hearts are helping to destroy the world and are the kind of people that want to find out what angry Muslims want and to make then accomodate them. Here's what they want: kill all the gays, kill all the Jews, subjugate all who don't follow Allah and treat them as second-class people with no rights, and have no law but Sharia. Okay, just do that and you'll have peace with Islam.

  51. 51

Cartman or Gunther or whoever you are:)

"American culture is not that powerful. You, yourself, sound crazy. While I appreciate you don't blame guns, I see you blame television, American videos, and American culture. Listen Finish girl, are you saying Fins are all weak minded and can't help but fall victim to American television?"

Again, I can`t speak english well so it`s hard for me express what I mean. I meant that those men took model from "Virginia-videos", they were inspired by those videos in youtube. Yes, we know that videos isn`t the reason for what happened, but it makes wonder that what they would have done if they haven`t seen the videos? Maybe still the same or something else? Those criminals gets their way to do bad things anyway if they want to. Of course people are trying to do everything they can but it`s not that simple here. We are blaming guns, and young people healthcare. We also want that there shouldn`t be so much violent videos on internet, or chats. I`m not blaming american culture. It`s just strange why our politicians want to make this country to be mini-USA.

  52. 52

    And..
"Why don't you write your politicians and demand that normal minded, strong willed, young men in your vocational schools be armed so that next time crazy killers like this can be shot immediately like the dogs they are."

Because we want less guns, not more. And we want to make it harder to get access in guns, just because criminals know where or how to get guns, we don`t want to make it easy for them.
We don`t want to make this country to be that kind, where everyone owns gun, we want there were not so many guns.
What`s that Martin Luther King said.. Eye for an eye, and the world would be blind.

I understand that idea youre saying, and basically it would be safe thing to do, but it also makes people more scary when there is more guns.. Finland is still "quite safe" country, except by those big accidents.

Number was again just a fact, 10 innocent people are dead, and one sick bastard, lunatic shooter. I`m not defending the murderer, just wishing that he would shoot himself before starts killing innocent people..

  53. 53

"Muslims want and to make then accomodate them. Here's what they want: kill all the gays, kill all the Jews, subjugate all who don't follow Allah and treat them as second-class people with no rights, and have no law but Sharia. Okay, just do that and you'll have peace with Islam. "

It doesn`t mean that people here are stupid because all od us can`t speak english well, there is other languages also you know. There is also lots of americans who doesn`t even know where the New York City is, talking about Finland.

We don`t like muslims way to live or think (we are not rasists) , but we also don`t like the fact that americans are in war with no good reason. Why you are killing so many people, why don`t you worry own business.. There is no real threat to your country, and you are defending yourself being war because you "want to make other countries better". USA should take care of it`s own country, not others. You just want to steal all the oil from other countries. Because of your idiot banks, it (economy) could affect the finns too.

You`ll choosing idiots for president and what`s the result? You are brainwashed by politicians, president, and american media. You just want war, nothing more. Wasn`t for example Michael Moore`s document a wakeup call? He showed how stupids americans can be. But of course you are revering Bush and other lunatics, Bush is like little Hitler, he has killed too many people. You are not very sivilized people.

  54. 54

"those freaking crazy Muslims wouldn't be trying to kill or convert everyone. Instead they would be trying to make more money to get a nice house and car."

*That`s american speaking. More money and fancy houses and cars make everything better..how smart.Do you even know, that because parents are trying so hard to get that money and cars and stuff, they don`t have so much time for the children.Time is more important for raising kids, not spending it something not so important. They don`t have time to raise kids,so they don`t always even notice when those kids are feeling "bad".Don`t blame the parents, but everyone knows this is a one reason.Just because you care the money most, doesn`t mean everybody should do.

*Muslims don`t have nothing to do with Finland,we`re not muslims. And Europe is Europe, not run by muslims. You are american, right? That explains your hate to muslims, you are "brainwashed" by believing that every muslim is bad person:)You americans are killing also innocent muslims.Every country got people who are innocent the way that country works.

"Either disarm yourself and be a victim, or arm yourself and fight back."
Americans plenty of guns, has it made violence more less? No.People just don`t want to live like jungles here.Yes, there is a right to protect ourselves, but usually we got smarter things than guns.Guns are not so needed in here, because those kind of tragedies are not common here.Police got guns, that should be enough.

But, when I reached your #53 & 54 comments, I became sorely disappointed. You were 'baited' by Cartman…and you fed right into it.
To generalize that ALL American's believe in the things and act in the same manner (which you did when you did NOT state 'SOME Americans or 'MOST Americans', in your diatribe), is just wrong. You wouldn't like it if anyone stated that ALL Finns believed and acted in the exact same way, would you?

-I`m sorry.. You are right. Of course some americans, not all. I don`t have nothing against USA or americans, I just think that there is no reason for "americans" (->cartman) to judge finnish people or our country. And there`s always right to speak, but I just wanted to say that americans aren`t any better people than we finns. I think we`re all equal. And I want to visit sometimes in the future somewhere in america, I think you have beautiful country and many things to see:)

I`ll stop my writing here now, and wish you all happiness and good things to your life, our finns too:) Life luckily goes on, slowly and painfully, but it goes on…
