American Psycho coming to Broadway

american-what.jpg

Just how far will they go?

Yesterday we talked about the new Spider-Man musical.

Today, American Psycho is hoping to go from novel to screen to stage.

Producers are working on a musical about Bret Easton Ellis' wealthy New York serial killer, Patrick Batemen.

It'll be like a modern-day Sweeney Todd!

Neither a director, book writer nor songwriter have been attached to the project yet, but producers are aiming for a 2010 debut on Broadway.

The success of staged killers has traditionally been a little unpredictable, from the popular Sweeney Todd to the not-so-popular Carrie.

So is this idea a little, oh shall we say, psycho?

    Bad idea.
Overrated book. Read it 20 years ago.
Decent movie (only Christian Bale could save it)
    And now a musical?

    Damn, Broadway is getting lame.

  25. 25

Re: LettyB – it is getting old and boring. don't be a one trick pony. stir up some trouble with someone else

  26. 26

    *yawn*

  27. 27

Loved the movie… can not even fathom how they would turn it into a musical!

  28. 28

some 80s sentimentalist producers once tried to turn bright lights, big city into a musical and it didn't work. honestly, the only way this could ever work is if the book is ten times smarter and wittier than the source material. (i can see it now, a whole number about designer men's labels - gag)

American Psycho was a great book, but in my opinion one that could never be truthfully made into a movie. The book doesnt cater to the imagination like the film does. The horrific nature of Patric Bateman is simply impossible to convay, without being inside the head of the victims and the killer. What he puts his victims through is never seen in the movie. I just dont think it did the book justice. (few films do or can)
Allthough I love to watch Christian Bale in anything, Id recomend the book over film or broadway.

  30. 30

Loved the movie, think a musical would be a terrible idea.

  31. 31

SMILING AND BREATHING HEAVILY AS I THINK CHRISTIAN BALE…

  32. 32

    *sigh* Don't ruin the book…

  33. 33

LOVED the movie - LOVE broadway.. if this comes to canada, I'm there!

  34. 34

atually, if you've ever read the original book, I think it lends itself much better to a musical then it did to a feature film. I mean there are entire chapters in the book dedicated to music (…Ie: analyzing a Madonna album to the enth degree). I don't think the book translated very well into a movie..It became more about the gore and less about the psychological aspects of the character (which was actually what was so compelling about the book in the first place) I would be fascinated to see what kind of treatment the Bateman receives in a broadway version.

y mke a boring musical, spend da money wisely and use it to mke anova american psycho bt only wid sexy christian bale in it.

  37. 37

Good God, a Broadway play??!! The book was probably one of the worst written books every! It was like reading one continuous sentence…that went on the length of the book. Unless they can keep Ellis out if it and let someone else write the script, this is a very bad idea!

  38. 38

great movie and book! i would definately go see it!!!!

  39. 39

omg i looooooove this movie. i just watched it last night. christian bale is one hot psycho mofo!!!!

  40. 40

OH WOW… have you read the BOOK, Perez??!?!? It's great, better than the movie, although I LOVED Christian Bale's performance. I may have to fly up to NYC to catch the show!!!!

  41. 41

Bring Smokey and The Bandit to Broadway, SON!

  43. 43

    cool good to Know!

  44. 44

lets hope their leading man is easier to get along with than c bale.
    oy vetch.
    what a diva!

  45. 45

I'll watch if he's naked too!

  46. 46

Yes ,Bateman loved his music…..I think it will work in a REPO/SWEENY kind of way.

  47. 47

This movie in itself is REALLY REALLY creepy and confusing… I don't see how they're gonna put that in a musical… Has hollywood just 100% run out of ideas?
