Still Fanning The Flames

| Filed under: Film FlickersDakota Fanning

Dakota Fanning's latest movie, Houndog, is still stirring up some controversy.

The film has just been pulled from 5,117 AMC theaters nationwide.

The reason?

Apparently there's too much criticism over Fanning's rape scene.

The movie is described as "a drama set in the American South, where a precocious, troubled girl (Fanning) finds a safe haven in the music and movement of Elvis Presley."

As of today, the flick premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and has only been viewed in about 11 theaters since being released on September 19th.

Hounddoug was also nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

However, theatre chain execs are facing numerous boycotts from family valuez groups since Fanning was only 12 when the scene was shot and many are finding it too hard to watch.

But they probably haven't even watched it! So how could you find it too hard to watch without actually watching it?????

    uuum, it's called ACTING people!

  2. 2

If Dakota didn't have a problem actually DOING the scene ’cause she was acting then there shouldn't be a problem. If you don't like the idea then you don't have to watch, no one is putting a gun to your heads to do so

  3. 3

wow, I find it strange that you didn't call her a slut or a whore for getting raped in a movie…very unlike you, Perez.

  4. 4

Why is a 13 yr old wearing high heels? How ridiculous.

  5. 5

…they should release it. It would possibly lose a lot of Republican votes. "I DO It For Your Love". lololol

  6. 6

Wow, don't we nightly see things that are just as bad or worse on television programs like CSI, Law and Order, and the like? I just don't understand how this movie, which I assume has an R rating and wouldn't be viewed by children anyway unless a parent allowed, can result in such controversey. Really, I believe that some people have too much time on their hands. I know *I* have too much going on in my own real world to keep me from attacking a movie.

  7. 7

i cant wait to see it. i kno she did a good job.
her ppl have been tryin so hard for this little girl to get an oscar

  8. 8

    Baby cam…… No I can't go there!

    Re: LettyB

lmao nothing has been more used and abused than your use of the terms fucktard, and any reference to the erronous claims of me smoking crack or being a crackhead….now go back to eating your Mr. Goodbars until your face just got chocolate ova it…

  10. 10

duh, rape is real. If people don't want to watch things that are real, they can watch the Hills.

  11. 11

  12. 12

Wow some people are just a little too much, come on guys a young kid getting raped….you think this does not happen in the real world. Unfortunately it does =( and Dakota is JUST ACTING for God sake

  13. 13

she is growing up fast! she is a cutie

  14. 14

woah! if she's doing a rape scene at 14 shes incredibly mature, i love her and hope to see this movie at some point

  15. Eriks says – reply to this

I love Dakota she is soo cute and seems supersmart!

  16. 16

maybe people should see to know what goes on when parents think everything is ok with their children….and thats what they have to go through

    Re: TonyaAnn
u r so right. we see way worse on law and order and csi. so why is this movie such a big deal. what about that book lolita? thats considered to be a classic!

Re: abercorey – WHAT Kind of dog is chanel??

  20. 20

she's beautiful… she's gonna be a looker this one…. i give it another few years before she gets knocked up or goes to rehab though….

  21. 21

    She looks great!

  22. 22

harry , let me watch and I'll buy you A.C. adaptors.

  23. 23

personally I don't want to watch it. I don't even want to THINK about something like that. it's perverse for anyone who finds that entertaining and shame on her parents for allowing her to do a movie like this, especially at such a young and impressionable age. I'm sure a bunch of people are going to jump up my ass and say "oh its acting, oh its art" please… there's a fine line, and the execs of this movie crossed it.

  24. 24

i understand it's not real but because of my past i would never be able to watch it knowing that scene was in there. i about died when i watched the hills have eyes. that's just a personal opinion. i believe if you don't wanna watch it, then don't. it is just acting…

  25. 25

Geez, it's just acting. Although i don't think i can take a rape scene very well. I remember watching The Hills have eyes and that rape scene scarred me. I couldn't stop shaking and my legs were locked together for the entire day until i felt better and let my muscles relax.

  26. 26

It may be acting but I've got an 8yr old DD and it would terrify me!

  27. 27

Why did they not have Miley do the scene. Look at the outrage that brought on.
But, Fanning is a cutie. So normal for now! I hope she stays that way.

Re: harrybalsac – I feellike we have no lives we have been on here for atleast 7 hrs straight!!!!

  35. 35

    it's just acting… I still want to watch… She's so cute!

  36. 36

rape happens to young girls everyday, people just choose to ignore it, until its shown to you in a movie

  37. 37

This is to close to home for me later.

  38. 38

i don't want to see a 12 year old get raped even if it is acting.

"But they probably haven't even watched it! So how could you find it too hard to watch without actually watching it?????"
Yeah, I'm sure they're banning it without even watching it. You're a fucking moron Perez.

  47. 47

Re: CoDy A – you must not have kids.

  48. 48

  49. 49

    Re: MissBrooklyn
anyway. we all have seen waaay worse in movies and television programs.
shit like that happens everyday. if u choose to look they other way then thats ur deal, but you cant ignore fact. an thats what this movie is about.
when oprah came out and said she was sexually abused by her uncle. everybdy supported her. all dakota is doing is telling the story but putting it in prospective for ppl like you who choose to ignore reality

  50. 50

for these people, i think it is the idea of a little girl getting raped that is so disturbing.

i like dakota though, she reminds me of a little jody foster

  51. 51

Wow. I hope she gets nominated for best actress… She must have given an amazing performance. Since it’s so disturbing to watch… Let us decide if we want to watch… I know I would. That girl can act since she was a tiny.. Did you see her in I Am Sam..

  52. 52

Re: mama of 2 – is there a way to report him? that's just nasty.

  53. 53

    BOO! YAH!

  55. 55

Re: harrysnatch – he scares me.
    something has to be done!!

  56. 56

hello? does anyone remember 'bastard out of carolina' from 1996? it starred a young jena malone who was repeatedly raped and beaten by her step father…… creepy?….yes……fiction?…..yes.

  57. 57

  58. 58

Anyone remember Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver or Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby - two career defining roles. People need to remember that this is a performance and as long as the actor feels comfortable in the scene I don't see what the problem is. If people are really offended let them put their money where there mouth is and start supporting charities for abused children!

  59. 59

  60. 60

This girl has great people looking out for her, they don't have a problem with it. The masses are asses that can't think for themselves.

  61. 61

Re: iwantcandy – Yes, I remember that movie. Very sick and disturbing.

  62. Jason says – reply to this

If watching this isn't in your family values then don't. Very simple. Don't try and censor what I can watch though!

  63. 63

    Re: Mena16 – You're a moron.

  64. 64

This is the problem with taboos and not talking about things that happen in life. So many people have been sexually abused in their life, either by molestation or rape…. this is something so many adults turn a blind eye to, and the reason is because it's not thrown in their face, and they're not forced to deal with it. This is something that happens to a lot of women and it is a horrible horrendous crime. People shouldn't ban the movie, instead they should understand it and become empathetic. And don't say you dont' need to watch such a horrible scene with a little girl getting rape to be empathetic… actually you do!

You need to watch something to stir up strong emotions in you to be able to truly say you understand and that you are empathetic…

    all right enough rambling…

  65. 65

Perez, you should realize that "family valuez" groups are so superior to us barbarians that they don't have to actually SEE something to know it's bad, they can merely HEAR about it and automatically (and correctly) know it's bad. That's why they're so special and should be running the country, taking care of us "lesser" people who don't buy into their particular brand of bigotry, narrow-mindedness, and sexual repression.
Thank God we've got "family valuez" groups to show us Neanderthals the way!

  66. 66

i agree. if she didn't have a problem filming it then it's probably not even that bad. also, it's acting and it's a movie. it's supposed to go "too far" because it isn't real. if it was real, it would be another story.

  67. 67

umm, i'd like to know why rape has become a thing you "see" more and more in movies. being a victim it is always difficult to watch and it seems as though directors or producers, whoever, use it as a cheap way to show a breast. i find the whole thing very disturbing. why does it need to be viewed? they cant just imply? in my opinion, there is NOTHING better about the movie because of the scene, so why show it?

  68. 68

    Re: MissBrooklyn – well put

  69. Roz says – reply to this

there many a big fuckin deal about it because its dakota!!!!!!! shes supposed to be this cute little innocent person. at the end of the day she is acting. i mean hello!!!!!!!!!!! did anyone see Bastard Out of Carolina !!!!!!

  70. 70

She's an actress. Sure, there are lots of scenes in movies that are hard to watch, but it's not like this is the first movie to ever contain a scene that involves a child being raped…"Bastard out of Carolina" has some of the hardest child abuse scenes I've ever watched, and I don't remember ever hearing about anyone giving that film, or that film's cast, this level of crap.

  71. 71

Why would anyone want to watch a rape scene much less one with a child in it?? If you know the content you don't have to watch it to be disturbed, duh. Child abuse is an epidemic in this country and people want to put it in a movie and call it "art"? What they hell is wrong with her parents for allowing her to do this? She is NOT an adult and should not be treated as such or allowed to make adult decisions! You'll see this one in rehab a few years from now and for what, cash and maybe a trophy?? Obviously, "innocence" is underrated, and anyone who watches this and finds it entertaining is a pervert.

  72. 72

Good lord this is STILL going on? It's been months.. years? People need to grow a pair and lighten up. Stop getting so f*cking offended at everything!

  73. 73

It's a fucking movie. She's ACTING. She's not actually getting raped. If you think it would be too hard to watch, DON'T GO SEE THE MOVIE, but don't ruin it for the people who actually do want to see it.

  74. 74

If you want child rape scene that are hard to watch, rent "Bastard Outta Carolina" (child raped by her step-father), "Once were Warriors" (daughter raped by drunk family friend), much more graphic.
Child Rape happens. More attention should be brought to it so we can fight this. Empower girls and teach men that sex with children is criminal.

  75. 75

Re: iwantcandy – Powerful movie. Ron Eldard, the violent step-dad, went to high school with me in NYC. The little girl was beaten and molested, until she was raped and her mother saved her. Powerful shit. It wasn't fiction because it was based on the life story of the woman who wrote the book.

  76. 76

Re: Dirty old man – Looks like their going to sell at least one DVD.

  77. 77

Re: stefystef – Sounds like your writing a training manual for pedos. Any more recommendations?

  78. 78

    Oh yeah?
Do you think Hollywood would film and release ANY movie that featured a graphic rape scene of a 12-year old BOY?
    didn't think so.

  79. 79

I just love to see a 14 year old working the fuckme pumps. Better both feet on the ground, though, than both feet behind her head like the Miley Cyrus hoebag.

  80. Pav says – reply to this

They have had scenes with child rape before .. for example a time to kill..
    let the movie play..

  81. 81

That number can't be right. Even the largest releases don't reach those numbers of theaters.
    Check your source.

  82. 82

Brooke appeared completelyfull front NAKED at the age of 12 in this film and no one made a big deal about that, true it was a different time but people need to llighten up, messed up shit like little girls getting raped happens and people need to know about it, be aware about it, and protect their children. Quit acting like it doesn't happen. As long as the director's focus wasn't aimed at an audience of pedophiles then there's nothing wrong with it.

  83. 83

Re: Muromasa – I agree with you, if the rape scene were to be "implied" then everyone would just dismiss it, and the powerful impression it would leave if it were real would be lost. Seeing would be awful, but it would leave a lasting impression in my mind that this shit happens, and maybe there's something I can do to help. Also, props for Dakota for having the ability to pull off such a scene, she should be given credit for her acting.

  84. 84

Ok, wait… what is the name of this project!?!?! Is it "Houndog" or "Hounddoug" or (the correct spelling of the canine) "Hound Dog"?

Key-RIST!!! Mario!!! Install a spell-check program before blogging.

    please visit www.stripology.com

  85. 85

They didn't need to show the rape scene. It can be implied without showing that crap. I don't want to see a child raped–even if it is just a story and even if it is acting. Why would anybody want to watch that?

  86. 86

it doesnt make sense, ive seen movies where young girls get raped and as horrible as it is and a little bit devilish that producers and story writers need to include things like that in movies, anyways my point is whats the controversy now? jsut cos dakota was a child star? is that the only reason ? tell them not to get their knickers in a knot - it doesnt solve anything and it makes u walk funny

  87. 87

when i heard about this a while ago, it pissed me off.
i mean, she was just acting.
    people need to lighten up.

  88. 88

Its ACTING!!! Fanning is a very mature girl, rape is a real thing in our everyday life so maybe now some of the laws will change or something will change by this scene.

  89. 89

This is so ridiulous. She's an actor and a great actor at that.
Look at other movies she's done…Man on Fire….I Am Sam. They're all movies with a distinct adult edge but she did a fantastic job. She seems like a smart girl….if she's ok with it then what's the big deal???

    Go Dakota :)

  90. 90

She kinda looks like Kate Hudson or Goldie Hawn.

  91. 91

ok whats the big deal? ya it is disturbing that she is a 12 year old getting raped but it only proves she is an incredible actress for being so young!

  92. 92

Re: cherrylink – totally agree!!!! LOL

  93. 93

    hate her.

  94. 94

She is starting to look almost fuckable how old is this bitch now?

  95. 95

it's sick. and parents who let their kid do roles like that are just desperate. who knows how she will feel about it in few years. it's just wrong

  96. 96

They were not going to put it in 5,117 AMC theaters anyway!!! That would have blow the record for biggest release away! People are so uptight. If you dont want to see it dont go.

  97. 97

    Re: saske72

  98. 98

why some people get offended so easy!
    it's a damn movie!
And she is a good actress
