Hey, Arizona!

We know we've been talking a lot about Prop 8 here in California, but readers in Arizona can help strike down a similar proposition!
Proposition 102 intends to amend the Arizona Constitution with this addition:
“Marriage - Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state.”
So if you're in Arizona, remember to vote and tell em AW HELLZ NAW on Prop 102!
Make your voice count!!!
EQUALITY for all!
Don't support discrimination!

Clay is my favorite gay at the moment!!!!!!!!
Where's the obit for Jerry Reed, Perez? Did I miss it? Surely, you put up SOMETHING about the greatest finger-pickin' performer that ever walked the planet. This HAM BALL Clay "My Boner's Not" Aiken would've ran off the stage crying if he ever had to go up against THE MAN in a REAL musical competition, SON!
Arizona isn't exactly the most progressive, liberal state. Although there are a handful of gays and lesbians in the State gov't. Asking Arizona to vote in favor of gay marriage is pretty high minded. I agree with gay marriage but there are a lot of small minded Americans that don't mingle much that find gay marriage somehow an attack on their "Christian" values.
Hey, Perez, ENOUGH with these 'public service announcements', PLEASE…give the eligible voters some 'air to breathe', FFS.
If they are eligible, and registered, to vote…that means they are adults. They are fully entitled to follow their own hearts and consciences, without undue influence by YOU.
Sad. I was just driving on Rural and Southern and saw these huge ads that said vote yes to 102…i was like oh gawwwdd not in arizona also! im not gay, but i feel bad.
Re: Monkey Brains – I was disappointed that there wasn't an obit for Mr. Reed, also. He was such a wonderful man….always smiling, optimistic and oh, so talented. He is missed, terribly.
I agree, I mean, why can't we all just get along? No one is allowed to say who can and can't marry, it's not like we're voting for the next person to run our country..it's not fair to gays if there just happens to be more conservative people out there who feel more strongly against gay marriage than liberals who are too lazy to stand up and do something for it! I can't imagine what life would be like not being able to share that joy and security with the one you love…gay or not marriage is a personal choice between two people and it shouldn't be for the courts to decide. I hope this country pulls it's head out of it's ass someday and starts recognizing the true meaning behind freedom..not the BIBLE'S version.
oh I forgot to say that Arizona is full of old conservative assholes ( I mean that whole state is RED) not to mention a bunch of pro-Mccain/Palin republicans…so good luck, gays in Arizona! Have fun with that one!
I'm in AZ and will vote NO to 102 and YES to Obama!
Az has already thrown this one out. It isn't anti gay marriage outright, it's ani-cohabitation. Old people are the most likely to cohabitate without getting married because they get screwed out of better social security and medicare benefits. Luckily they're also the most likely to vote.
perez, who is doodling on your pictures?! it is not you! stop having your help do it. i'd rather see a pic with no doodles on it than one that has doodles that are clearly done by someone else!
Thank you so much perez for raising awareness on this issue. The commercial arizona is airing for this proposition is ridiculous. You can not help who people fall in love with.
It is amazing to me that this is even an issue, Gay marriage should be legal in every state. 20 years from now people will look at this and wonder if Troglodytes were running the Government.
I LIVE IN ARIZONA, & ITS F**KIN WHACK!!
VOTE YES ON 102 PEOPLE!
It's not discriminatory- marriage is defined by LAW as between a man and a woman. You can go find yourself another WORD. Call it Gayrriage, whatever- but it isn't a marriage. Never has been. You want the same rights- you got it. But you can't keep insisting on that word. It's ours. Better yet- call it "gay marriage". Add the other definition. Who cares? But you keep fighting over a WORD. And some of us don't want to give it up. Make up a new one. Get your "rights" and get on with it.
My asshole dad yelled at me this week for supporting gay marriage.
Re: BombChel –
You're a bitch! Gays should be able to get married if they want. Why can't people let them be happy too! WHO THE FUCK CARES, honestly.
Re: Mare_N_AZ –
Me too!
Re: Fendi Larue –
Ummm…yeah…I'm an Arizonan and I'm not a RED asshole. Blanket ignorant statements such as yours does NOTHING for the cause or any cause for athat matter. T
Here, the further south you go, the more liberal it is. Are you even old enough to vote much less registered?
Re: Cherry Bomb – wow, you're kind of ignorant. You're getting upset because they want to use the WORD marriage? As if a word can simply define what that is between two people? The law once also said that black people could be slaves and women couldn't vote. Sometimes the law is WRONG. Marriage as defined by a man and a woman is completely pre-historic is this day and age. We need to progress as a country and start seeing everyone as equal. To say gays simply want to steal the word "marriage" is forgetting that they want equal rights, the same as you or I, in the eyes of their partnership. I could call my boyfriend my "partner" but does that mean I shouldn't because that's what gays refer to their mate as? Maybe if the divorce rate wasn't 50% in this country anyway MAYBE I could see where you're coming from…but as of right now, you're clearly talking nonsene.
What do you expect from Arizona? They still have the "chain gang" for prisoners and I think they are the only state that does not recogize Martin Luther King's holiday. So behind the times and the state isn't even in the South!
Now, don't be so down on Arizona! This same bill was up for a vote previously, and was voted down. Not to mention we have the history of having had the first openly gay Republican congressman in Jim Kolbe for many years. It's sick that this has been put back on the ballot yet again, but it won't pass.
Re: Cherry Bomb – You are claiming the 'rights' to a word that was created MANY, MANY moons before you were even a glimmer in your daddy's eye???
You read more into the definitions of 'entitlement' and 'covet', than what the rest of us digest from our handy, dandy Webster's or Funk and Wagnall's Dictionaries, don't you?
You need more help than anyone on this site can give you.
Sure….don't support discrimination unless it's a black man..then you can compare him to Aunt Jemima…right Perez?
Clay, Gay? No WAY!
Re: Cherry Bomb – Wow, how did you get that big a stick up your ASS! Booty Lube?
i live in arizona and im def going to vote no on this one!!!!
It doesn't matter to me if people choose to live a gay lifestyle, but I don't believe in gay marriage. I believe marriage is between a MAN and a WOMAN - I also believe in God, Jesus and the Bible.
As long as we take scripture and make it law….
no ones getting equality.
I'm from AZ and just got one of these fucking flyer's in my mail. Arizona voters are old white people. You will never run out of old white people……
Re: Cherry Bomb – Of course it is discriminatory…They cannot legally get married in most of the country. Please explain why you care if it is called a marriage? Why does marriage have to be defined as being between a man and a woman? No one is fighting over a word…they are fighting to have the same rights as heteros.
Im from AZ…been there for over 20 years. (im 24) Im a republican and a "closed-minded christian" as you like to call it. You don't want anyone to stereo-type you so please don't do it to us. Yes we don't agree with that life-style, but i will never be rude, call you names, or keep you from doing something. We live in a society where we sit and blame everyone else instead of getting off our butt and do something about it. Well voting is one way we as americans can do something. If a bill gets voted one way as opposed to another you can't get mad or pissed off. A bunch of people voted the way they felt and moved on…so should you… Good grief all this fighting and finger pointing does nothing…We can only live the way we feel and so can you, but please do not dare just point the finger and "so-called" Christians…
Just drove by Gilbert and Elliot and there is a huge sign for "yes on 102". it's gonna be pretty hard to win this one, since this is Mormon-ville and extremly conservative!
I am in Phoenix and will vote "No" on this prop.
I moved here about 15 years ago. What a bunch of noodnicks to say the least. I came out of the grocery store one day and there was a table set up with someone wanting me to sign this piece of garbage. When I told her no way she just stared at me in disbelief.
I've considered removing those banners so many times that it's not even funny. It's wrong that they can't just be more accepting here.
First off, we do celebrate Martin Luther King day, we were just late to the party. Second while Republicans are organized, mobilized, and enjoy the benefits of having a large retirement community we also have a healthy and growing liberal community with an increasing Hispanic voice and influence in our politics. So Miss Fendi and Avocado, shut it. We know we have Sheriff Joe, that is a cross we have to bear and John McCain is from Arizona. Every state has someone in power that doesn't belong. Look to your own state. For what it's worth, despite the tricking advertising that has been advocating a "YES for 102 means a YES for marriage" I'm confident that it will not pass. IF it does, those of an equality persuasion will just have to work harder the next time. Thanks Perez for not forgetting Arizona!
I'm in AZ and will definitely be voting NO on this proposition. It's unfortunate that in our current economic downturn (recession), where Americans are losing their homes, jobs, retirement, etc., politicians are concerned over clarifying that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
What do I care if a same-sex couple want to marry? Why should anyone care?
PRIORITIES PEOPLE!
what about being married to more than one person… 3 ppl living in harmony… married. is that ok too?
I agree ShadyB. In this day and age when our economy is about to collapse it is always amazing to hear or read that social issues are some peoples only or top concern. I could give a rats ass if 2 women or 2 men marry. It doesn't effect my marriage or my life. As for Sherriff Joe, he is a disgrace. If it weren't for the the 55 and over crowd this guy would have been voted out along time ago. I too hope that as time goes on and the state gets more diverse that his days will be numbered. I didn't grow up in AZ and am appalled by the views of so many. I hate that my children have to be surrounded by such ignorance but my husband's job leaves us no choice but to stay a few more years.
Re: Fendi Larue – please please, please stop equating gay rights with civil rights!…you can't change or choose the color of your skin and until someone proves that you are born gay it is a choice.
I am in Phoenix and I am DEFINITELY voting NO on Prop 102!!!!!!!!!!!! All those in AZ, let's be sure that this shiz DOES NOT pass!!!!
Re: Anonymous –
Ok, are you SERIOUS? Obviously being old enough to vote does NOT mean maturity…at ALL. How do you think that adults make up their own minds and hearts? By HEARING or reading about it from others. Like Perez's website, or the news, or in books an magazines. And just like in all those other mediums, if you DON'T agree, no one is forcing you to listen. Just SKIP the article. JESUS.
I can't WAIT until the vote comes around. I keep getting those stupid messages on my machines saying "say YES to 102". BOOOOO on them. Im all for equal marriage rights for everyone. We're all the same in the end. Perez I hope that you find someone that you can happily settle down with and have one little happy family with him and Teddy!
I'mRe: Cherry Bomb – ohh please..it's not just about a word..your comment is very nonsense..
Re: itsallinlove – You owe Fendi Larue an apology. You read ONE sentence, of hers (in her #20 post), and twisted it into a pretzel….in order to suit your personal agenda.
Pathetic.
Why would anyone want to deny someone the chance to hear I DO? Really what else is their in life but to find that one person you can go through life with who loves you good or bad you have your mate. It pains me to think that my son might not get that chance. He is good hardworking has a full time job and goes to school. Why is it that people feel he should be denied the chance to get married? My wish for my son is to be himself never feel bad for who you are, and to marry the love of your life.
Re: Gossip_Lea – I am QUITE serious, thank you for asking. I am guessing here, but I am willing to bet that I have been eligible to vote before you were even a 'twitch' in your daddy's jeans.
Yes, I AM a mature adult…would you care to compare life experiences, resumes, beliefs and/or discuss current world affairs? I am ready when you are.
BTW…the advice that you, so graciously, bestowed upon me "..if you don't agree, no one is forcing you to listen. Just SKIP the article"…works both ways. If you don't agree (with anything I have to say), no one is forcing you to read it. Just SKIP my comment.
Oh, dear…I surely hope that my sarcasm wasn't showing.
Re: Fendi Larue –
You forgot to shed some light on the other HALF of the state that doesn't give a flying fuck about McCain/Palin. In my opinion, McCain is the most horrible thing to come to this state because he left a good stereotype of us all being a bunch of "old conservative assholes", like you just proved.
We'll have better luck once Janet Napolitano decides to embrace the fact that she likes her dick synthetic and strapped onto a woman.
Prop. 102 is ridiculous. "Marriage" is already defined in state law and we voted a similar amendment proposition DOWN in 2006!
What? Are they just going to keep putting it on the ballot until Arizona votes the "right" way? Ugh.
NO on 102 - hopefully for the last time.
I so wish I could vote >.
Re: itsallinlove –
Prove that you can't change the color of you skin, then
Hells yeah I'm votin' NO on 102. The ads in AZ are so biased and backwards. And it's mainly THE MORMONS who are backing this. Ironic, isn't it? Their screwed up Polygamy is okay but same sex isn't. Go figure.
Re: TiffandJeff – By voting no, you ARE POINTING A FINGER AT GAYS! Sheesh! That's the point.
Sedona has a lot of gay couples. Good God it's gorgeous in Sedona. It's the SF of AZ. BEAUTIFUL.
What is up with these uber-conservative whackos going around discriminating against people on the basis of their gender? What if the man was born biologically a woman but had sex-reassignment operations and is visually a man but is still biologically a woman and this man marries a woman that was born a woman. Does this mean they can't get married? Frick, the USA really is whacked out. At least in Canada even if the uber-conservatives which include the current leader (Stephen Harper) try to make marriage that way it won't fly thanks to the Human Rights Legislation.
Doughboy. Marriage is for a man and a woman — not for 2 dicks. When are you going to learn that and your bible. Marriage = man and woman. You are so stupid
I live in Arizona and will be voting no on this prop.
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
Yes on 102!!!!
whats going on? i thought things where getting better for us..? i feel like the gay rights movement is taking a step back with all of this marriage stuff.
:(
Re: itsallinlove – did you "choose" to be straight? no.. you didnt.
"Don't support discrimination!"
Coming from you ?
CHERRY BOMB, I totally agree. The words Gay, Fag, Butch, Queer and others have all been adopted by the homosexual community to identify their lifestyle, why not pick another word or make something up?
AND To FENDI, you must be joking bringing up the divorce rate among straight people. What is the separation rate among the gay crowd? I would say it's way more than 50% so that argument means nothing. You would be the ignorant one. In fact i do believe that the first gay couple to get " married " in MA years ago and adopted a kid ( another one of my favorite topics ) got a " divorce within the first year.
I am an atheist by the way, so I have no desire to promote a christian value, but I do have little kids, and a very good gay friend who is thinking of getting " married " what do I tell my eight year old little girl when we are invited tot hat wedding. Face it, it's not right, and it's not normal. If it was, then I would not have to explain to her why 2 men are getting married.
Re: Darrell –
Yes you should totally remove the banners. No one has a right to free speech in this country. Everything should be run past you before making it a law, cause you are the olny one that counts. See this is the problem with Liberal people. They are like little kids throwing a temper tantrum. Why is that there was not a single protester at the Dem convention this year? Can you say that about the Republican convention? Do right wingers throw bottles at cops and smash store windows to get their point across? Why so militant? It's because you know that you are wrong, and if anyone tells you, you are wrong then you yell and scream and spit on reporters. Nice party, where do I sign up?
First of all, a few of you have mentioned Mormons &, while I myself am not Mormon, my husband’s family is. And I live in Surprise, Arizona where who knows how many Mormons live; most of the people I associate with are Mormon. You could say I live in the middle of “Mormon-ville” & most of the ones I talk to are indifferent on the whole gay marriage thing. Would they publically fight for it? Probably not, that doesn’t mean they would publically fight against it either. I think the bigger problem with getting prop 102 denied is going to be the huge amount of retired people we have here, people who are stuck in their ways.
Secondly, Cherry Bomb, you are very naïve to think that the fight for gay marriage is simply over the word marriage. They are fighting to have the same rights as everyone else. The biggest issue I have with the ban on gay marriage is what happened to the separation between church and state? Our government isn’t supposed to make laws based on religion. People argue that children shouldn’t be allowed to say the pledge in school because God is mentioned yet our government is going to force a law on us because it was something in the bible? & for those of you who claim that gay marriage is wrong because it says so in the bible, I find it extremely hard to believe that you fallow the bible word for word. Should we make it illegal to covet things? If someone takes the Lords name in vein, should we have them thrown in prison? If the bible had said that two black people couldn’t get married, would black people still be fighting for the right to get married? I doubt it. And if you are going to argue that black people are born black but gay people aren’t born gay, show me the proof.
AZ is full of square heads not doubts. Dear AZ people " What you marriage will be affected for any sex-same marriage" Hello!
Once again… you have good Christians doing unto others before anyone can do unto them. Want to protect marriage? Send people to jail for cheating on their spouses. Make divorce more difficult. But don't tell someone else who they can love (and I'm a woman that's been married to a man for 8 years… I don't think anyone has the damn right to dictate who someone can love).
Re: Fendi Larue – You are right to a point. You are also being a little over the top. AZ is a huge melting pot these days and I have many homosexual friends and times have defintely changed. If enough people voted against it, it could make a difference.
you got my back perez
Re: Le Deux Alpes – For your information, the Mormon Church has NOTHING to do with polygamy. Check your facts.
Re: Le Deux Alpes – that's why many gay couples live upstate. It is so much more relaxed and easier to be how you want. I've lived in the East valley and West Valley of AZ and the west valley is way more laid back and not as racially and religiously political. As for the East valley, it is much more uptight because of the higly populated mormon communities. That is why Sedona and Payson are great places to retreat to and be how you want to be. I originally grew up in NY where you were pretty much accepted for how you were and for who you were. That wasn't always a good thing but at least people weren't being influenced by what one says is right and wrong. If this state can put up with all of the illegal immigrants (especially the ones that are okay with it because these people take the slave driver jobs) that steal our cars, and cause violence why isn't it ok for a man/man and women/women to get married? They are being descriminated against for really bad reasons
Re: Avocado – well put. I live in AZ and see the signs on every corner. The thing is, their website is yesformarriage. Doesn't that border on ironic? Marriage is a human right. Not a straight right. And, I always love to meet people who feel that their "Christian" values are being attacked. They are usually the biggest hypocrites of the bunch.
Re: camillejanae –
Thanks for the good laugh. ha ha ha. Nothing to do with it, ha lol chortle snort. Where did it come from? Are you saying that they never embraced that lifestyle? Really? Someone should tell the folks at Big Love that htey have it all wrong.
Re: Frag The Paps – I’m sorry; did I say that they never had anything to do with it? No, I did not. Yes at one time Mormons did practice polygamy, but to assume that it is still being done in the Mormon community is false. That was my point. And, if you actually watch Big Love, you will notice that they make a point to show that they are part of the FUNDAMENTALIST Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; not the LDS church itself; and that’s because the church abandoned the practice of polygamy around the late 19th century. To say that all Mormons today are polygamists would be the same as saying anyone who is German is a Nazi. It is an unfortunate past but a past nonetheless, and if you do your homework, you will learn that polygamy has been practiced in a number of religions in the past, not just the Mormons.
It's pretty sad that this far into our country's history there is still discrimination. Especially against a group of people that have remained so peaceful and tight-knight throughout. I'm straight myself, but am truly dissapointed that my state would even THINK about taking a right as special as marriage away from people who did NOTHING to deserve something so terrible. I will vote NO on 102. McCain can kiss my ass.
