McCain Suspends Campaigning - Wants To Postpone Debate!!!!
Filed under: Politik > Barack Obama > John McCain > Sarah Palin
The situation on Wall Street is beginning to look so bleak that John McCain has called for a temporary suspension of his campaign in order to return to Washington and address the President and Congress.
He's also requested postponing the presidential debate scheduled for Friday.
Scared????
With this being one of the most explosive and expensive presidential races to date, McCain's decision could jeopardize his standing as debates are an important platform for candidates to express their policies and appeal to the public.
McCain explains himself thusly:
"America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, every corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen….
"It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration's proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.
"Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me….
"We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis."
Dayum! Shit's really hit the fan!
But while McCain's announcement seems like a noble re-prioritizing, you have to wonder what happened to the "I don’t believe we’re headed into a recession” statement he uttered not too long ago, as well as his general stance on limited government business regulations.
The developing economic crisis is worrying and with folks' tunes changing and election time drawing close, things are getting tricky!
Obama has not yet responded.
What do U think of this startling new development?

scary shit
HMMMMMMMMMMM! UGHHHHHHH!
Hey harry the Dakota, rape thing was to much like last week so I bailed for a bit,in fact I calling it a day for this, seeya later ,muah
He's such an idiot. Why Americans want him for President, I'll never know.
BULLSHIT! He knows he will sink and fail when debating against Obama. He can't think that fast anymore in his old age. Bastard
Good! Somebody straighten this out already….
i was looking forward to the debate.
Re: harrybalsac – see ya.
He's right…I hate to admit it. But it seems you folk need to fix your country first. Good Luck with that
It's too bad the integrity of this lameass administration is shot to hell. They asked us to believe there were weapons of mass destruction, that Saddam had the capaity to pull it off,we had control of Iraq, the oil price gouging was out of their control, we were not in a recession and now this.
Un-fuckin'-believable.
This government needs an enema.
Vote Obama.
good for him.
Re: LettyB – are you married to a black guy??
Please, he doesn't care. He's just buying time to tudor himself and sarah on how to deal with these debates. Isn't that special? That shit's fake. He will be studying, and learning. THAT"S ALL!
Something tells me that Sarah Palin will find a way to not debate Biden, because we all know, she will fall flat on her face. They're probably going to claim the media doesn't respect her or some shit like that and say they don't need to.
Good for him. That is the right thing to do. Always thinking of the country first. Classy movie Mr. McCain. More points for you!
I think they keep saying we are not in a recession, as to not "scare" Americans. i know it sounds silly, but they don't want people to panic. but I think this is a good idea. I don't think that it makes him look bad to postpone a debate, as long as it happens at some point after they get some things sorted out in DC about the economy. And I am not a McCain supporter….but I agree with him here.
Dayum! Hopefully Capital Hill can fix this shiz soon, people can't afford to live as it is now.
first! love you perez
.
MCINSANE'S THE JOKE
SARWHORE'S THE PUNCHLINE!
DON'T LET THEM GET THE LAST LAUGH–
VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN ON NOV 4TH!
.

.
TO ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO BLAME THE "SO CALLED" DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS FOR THE COUNTRY'S WOES, BOTH FINANCIAL AND OTHERWISE!!!
.
NUMBER ONE!
THE DEMOCRATIC "MAJORITY" IS BASICALLY A 50-50 SPLIT BETWEEN THE DEMOS AND THE REPUBLICANS, RENDERING IT POWERLESS TO MAKE POLICY WHEN THE INHERENT POWERS OF THE PRESIDENCY ARE CONSIDERED!
.
NUMBER TWO!
WHILE RIGHT-WING EXTREMISTS MAY ENJOY PUMMELING NANCY PELOSI WHO IS A QUOTE SAN FRANCISCO DEMOCRAT END QUOTE AND HARRY REID, A DEMOCRAT FROM SIN CITY LAS VEGA$, THEY EACH HAVE MORE EXPERIENCE AND LEADERSHIP ABILITY THAN THE REVLON "PLUM RAISIN" LIPSTICK WEARING PIG FROM ALASKA!!!!!
.
AND… IF ANYBODY WANTS TO DEFEND THIS CHICK GO AHEAD–AS LONG AS YOU CAN DOCUMENT YOU EVEN HEARD OF HER BEFORE MCCAIN ANNOUNCED HER AS HIS CHOICE.
.
.
REMEMBER DARLINGS–LIPSTICK WEARING PIGS ARE STILL PIGS!
.
If I am not mistaken, this man is a Senator and his job is to work for the American people. I would not call this scared of a debate, I would call this a man who needs and wants to do his job. We have a crisis on our hands and this needs immediate attention. Shame on you Perez for your wording. It is so misleading. Senator McCain is doing what is best for this country. People need to quit running up debt themselves and have some self control. All I see are greedy people pointing fingers. I believe in PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and I don't see a lot of that lately. Give McCain his credit…he is doing the right thing.
As though not debating at 8 p.m. on a Friday will help the economy — DEBATE. How much more time do you need to prepare, McCain??? DO THE DAMN THING.
Re: harrybalsac –
ill see you later babe….stay strong!
GO MCCAIN!!!!!!
McSwine is manipulative and opportunistic. The FReddie Mac and Fannie Mae story where his aide took money is gaining traction. He just wants to get the focus off that and the rest of his mounting lies. And he realises he need more time to prepare himself and his dumbo femmebot Palin for the debates!
He will even use the economy as an excuse. The man is shameful.
Re: Jenisis – Maybe you should be learning to spell…
OH no you don't, Johhny Boy — the time has come. Bring it on . . .
He's someone that wants to do his job. If Obama doesn't go back to work and get something in the works…..it shows what he's about.
ACTUALLY HE'S HAVING HIS BALLS LIFTED THAT DAY!
slow.
Unless McCain and Obama really have some "magical" powers to cure, they need to continue to focus on campaigning. We need to hear more issues from both campaigns, and we need to know them better so we can make an informed decision. This sounds like McCain is trying to 1. distract and seem like a "higher person" 2. Avoid the debate.
I call bullsh-t!
Ummm could it actually be that he wants to take care of business since they are both Senators and NEED to get this done?
Why would McCain be scared of Obama, Obama is the one that has troubles whenever he's without cue cards.
Re: mama of 2 – yah, why?
Nobel, my ass - his choice of running mates has burst into flames - he should have listened to his advisors.
-
But McCain - in a rash manner, choose Palin against all advice. Now its bringing him down. Too bad.
-
Please don't let someone who cannot make decent choices, instead decides based on anger, to run our Country. Please don't.
he knows he can't beat OBAMA in a debate duh
Re: Jenisis – ssssshhhhhh….
when you talk you sound dumb.
If you read the entire article on CNNpolitics.com, you'd see that White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said, "We are making progress in negotiations on the financial markets rescue legislation, but we have not finished it yet. Bipartisan support from Sens. McCain and Obama would be helpful in driving to a conclusion." They're already almost done so McCain pulling this "Leader" bullshit is ridiculous. Yeah, so much for his quotes "The fundamentals of the economy are strong" and "I don't believe we're headed into a recession." Just shows that he will make the wrong decisions. OBAMA 08
WOW!! McCain!!!! Now!!!!! thinks there is something wrong?!!!!! What happened to "The Fundamentals of the Economy is Good"? This is McCain trying to look like he cares. What does he think he will Fix when he HImself has said he does not know much about Economy?
HE PROPOSED TOWN HALL MEETINGS FROM THE MOMENT HE WON THE REPUBLICAN TICKET…OBAMA NEVER JUMPED ON IT! Now he is willing to put the campaign aside because of crisis….Well done McCain! Obama will try to use the crisis as a way to get more votes, sick.
I'm pretty sure he's just scared to debate Obama.
I am out ppls!
Re: LettyB – just wondering.
you said something back a bit that your kids are mixed.
is it true what htey say?
once you go black you never go back??
Its genius! Just as McCain was losing ground and looking weak on the economy and Obama was seen as strong on the economy, McCain pulls this! Lol, and just this morning Obama called McCain and proposed putting out a joint statement on the bailout and the economy. Obama's camp has got to be just steaming! Its a win-win for McCain, he looks like he takes the issues seriously and puts the country first and he shows he disagrees with the current administration's policies and Obama will either look bad when he refuses to stop his campaign or look weak when he claims he was the one who called McCain first or look weak when he simply follows McCain's lead. Genius.
OBAMA WILL EAT HIM ALIVE AT THE DEBATE WITH HIS BULLSHIT. OBAMA PROMISED ILLINOIS A LOT OF SHIT, BUT DELIVERED NOTHING, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA!!! THAT'S WHAT HE'LL DO WITH THE WHOLE COUNTRY. DON'T GET ME WRONG, MCCAIN IS A DOUCHE TOO.
This is just another ploy by McCain, the debate is 1 1/2 hrs long!!!! THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE POSTPONEMENT!!!!
I think he is chicken shit
Re: SuziQ – Maybe you should mind your fukkin' business. I'm too busy doing other things with my life than spelling correctly on a message board.
Re: curbstomp_you – 18th but close.
I dont see how canceling the debates is gonna change anything. This country is not gonna fix itself overnight.
WHOOAH!
McAcient is pathetic! Running scared. He even admits he doesn't know shit about the economy and he is going to suspend his campaign, postpone the debate to run to Washington to try to save the day. He is a joke, give me a fucking break. Smoke screens.
McCain isn't scared. McCain is doing his job as an elected official and going back to Washington to deal with a crisis. Maybe Obama should do the same, but then again Obama has only worked 143 days in the Senate and probably wouldn't know what going back to work would be like. This is a problem that needs to be figured out and McCain is doing the right thing. It shows leadership in real time instead of just talking about leadership, and it shows that he is trying to do something about the crisis now instead of just talking about the crisis, or hiding and preparing for a debate while the credit crisis continues.
I think Obama is shitting his pants that he didn't do this sooner.
Thank goodness McCain is stepping up! He's making an excellent, executive decision to make a difference NOW.
TEAM MCCAIN!!!
John McCain: Fiscal Conservative
-
Let's see the record (this is FACT):
-
R. Regan: Fiscal Conservative — $200 Billion DEFICIT
-
G. Bush: Fiscal Conservative — $300 Billion DEFICIT
-
Clinton: Wild Spending Liberal !! $200+ SURPLUS (Repeating - SURPLUS)
-
DUbye: Fiscal Conservative $482 Billion DEFICIT
–
-
-
McCain: (Fiscal Conservative) — What do you think will happen????
-
Please don't be fooled again . . .
Leonas Ghost: Why is the abortion issue the most important thing to you? Is it a personal issue? The economy's in the tank and you can't get over Palin.
…And while it's a great move on his part,it's a time buyer, and him being there, offering his 2 cents will NOT FIX ANYTHING!
Re: mama of 2 – NO, WELL DEPENDS! IF YOU ASK HIM HE WOULD YES! LOL! SEE YAH TOMMORROW!
Re: Leona$ Gho$t –
Wow you're an idiot.
Name calling when real issues are at stake….
Also if Reid and Pelosi were so experienced it seems like they could work on bi-partisan solutions and get at least ONE PIECE OF SIGNIFICANT LEGISTATION PASSED! If the republicans won't go for something reasonable you go to the press and make them look like fools. BUT they don't want anything passed because they can blame it on Bush, and try to win the white house. It's all a game at the taxpayers expense.
i think if this asshole really gave a shit about the economy, he would have proved it over the course of his washington career, the course of this campaign (last monday, people, LAST MONDAY he said the economy was 'fundamentally strong'; a statement which has NOTHING to do w/ the 'american worker' as he tried to spin it), and w/ his economic policy in general.
I AM SOOOO SICK of hearing him compare this to 9/11 as a ploy to A) get the 'fear' vote like bush did, and B) act as if this crisis didn't start 28-30 years ago w/ the fundamental republican policy of de-regulation. it has the added benefit, of course, of keeping him and his precious adulterer, palin, out of the eye of the media and away from the public scrutiny of the debates.
if i could advise obama, i would tell him to come out fighting, place the blame where it belongs, and call mccain 's scary ass back to the debates, even if they decide to focus on the economy in the mean time. i mean, shit, the debates can be held in washington dc just as easily as anywhere else. my prediction: if the debates don't go down as scheduled, they get 'postponed' til they are non-existant.
Re: SuziQ – #25 Maybe you should learn how to use proper grammar.
Political Gimmick. Go on with the debates! Election days is a month away, and I'm tired of listening to Republicans talk their nonsense. McCain and Bush have already ruined the economy, so he should stay out of it.
Re: mama of 2 –
Nope, not true!
Sounds like a delay tactic since he's not well-versed on economic issues, he's so old that what's going on is not registering in his head and he doesn't fully understand the problems and doesn't have a clue on how to offer solutions to the current situtation. He's afraid the people will see through his lack of intellect and leadership so he's challengin Obama to suspend campaigning as well. He's already screwed up by picking Palin, an obvious tactic and a distraction that will not offer any real changes due to her lack of experience. How can we trust this man to lead this country?!?!?!??
Re: LettyB – Re: harrybalsac – Re: abercorey – and everyone else who is on this site ALL day like me…have agood night. i am outta hear.
Re: mama of 2 – And when you make empty ssshhhh comments, you sound even dumber, smartness.
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why is the economic issue a crisis NOW? hasn't this been brewing & building for a while? kinda like a hurricane?
This is a complete joke. He is just avoiding the debate because he's scared. McSame doesn't want to debate Obama on the economy because he will lose!
This is economic shock and awe! This is the biggest bank heist in the history of this country!!!
Re: Suck it Trebek! – lmao, are you honestly going to believe the white house spokeswoman?! if you knew anything about the bailout proposal you'd know there is no end in sight to the opposition, republicans and democrats alike disagree with the plan-the bush administration has no one agreeing with this plan to give away 700 billion dollars and no power to regulate how its spent. you obviously don't know shit about this issue so you probably shouldn't be talking about it.
Re: LULU~* –
Hey Lulu who controlled congress (you know the purse strings) at those times?
Country first above politics….yay McCain!!
Very smart because is show that McCain cares about the country (Country First) and is will to put things aside for the crisis at hand.
It puts Obama on the spot, who has done very little in the Senate anyway. Obama's response to the economy has been very lame, at best. Obama has already said that he is going to put health care on the back burner because of the bank crisis.
If the McCain camp and Republicans uses this properly, it can really hurt Obama.
CALLING ALL McCAIN SUPPORTERS TO SWITCH OVER TO OBAMA!!!!!!
Re: ChachaO – The goverment and the mind of these republicans do need a fucking enema big time. Just not how it was delivered the country to a republican government and how it will be delivered to a new government. Is just unbelievable!
And as for McCain, he is just full of bullshit. The current administration to show stability and generate trust to the world in its DAMN CORE which is democracy shouldn't let the candidates participate in fixing the fucking mess themselves allowed to happen. Obviously McCain who agree in most of Bush politics and follow the same trend does not want to be question about his economical ideals in this time of crisis.
obama is the politician who waits and reacts to what the populous has to say regardless of the fact that most people aren't knowledgeable of what's really going on with the economy or the government.
Uh, Perezito..you know this already.. but since he IS a presidential candidate an entire political party is waiting on his opinion since they don't want to vote against their candidate's position. You knew that, though…right? And since this will impact the economy for years…you are getting this, right? I mean…damn..this isn't rocket science, Perezito. And as to being "afraid" to debate Obamamama…wasn't it McCain who suggested 10 town hall meeting, just McCain, OBAMAMAMA and the people of this great country? Didn't Obamamama turn that down? Why? Fear? I think so.
I am glad that he is planning to GO BACK TO HIS JOB. Just proves that he cares about the economy and wants to work at fixing it. Sounds like the quailities of a good president….
And if you read the New York Times yeaterday, you would see that it is strongly believed that Obama is not as great of a debator as he is a speaker. I think the term they used was "he has the float like a butterfly but he has yet to learn how to sting like a bee" The New York Times, not me, said this. If anyone sould be scared, it would be Obama.
Seriously speaking, this has got to be one of the funniest jokes I've heard in a long time!!!!!! McCain is killing me here. LMAO!!!!!
OBAMA/BIDEN '08
Re: kanga3 – oh yeah and you're an embarassment to real obama-biden supporters who know about the issues and don't just repeat speech rhetoric.
Good for John McCain and putting the COUNTRY first!
LAME!!! McCain is just trying to make himself look good. He himself has said that "The Fundamentals of The Economy are good"?!!!! and has said he doesn't no much about the Economy. What's he going to fix?!!! 2 hours of a debate won't hurt the fix. No one is waiting for McCain to come and fix anything you don't ask a bum to cure you you as a doctor. Give me a break It's all so he looks good cause he is Being slammed in the polls AMericans aren't STUPID!!!!
Re: Jenisis – How is that doctorate thesis coming? Just checking.
Re: SuziQ – Do you fucking thing his presence is going to do a bit of difference? I engage you to read CNN for the last 18 months there has been 10.000 foreclosures a day. Where was this man before? What he was doing? if this happens to be part of his job.. this is not news.. this was coming and no one in the current administration did nothing about it. So be it!
You people are hysterical …
He's not scared. McCain was BEGGING Obama for a debate and Obama refused repeatedly.
McCain is going to Washington to BEGIN reforming. That's right … he's trying to DO SOMETHING before he's elected, rather than just TALK about it.
McCain isn't scared by any means.
And have you all heard what an ass Biden is making of himself?
OBAMA IS THE ONE THAT IS SCARED, HE IS THE ONE THAT HAS BEEN 'TRAINING' FOR 3 DAYS FOR THE DEBATE.
ATLEAST MCCAIN IS PUTTING AMERICA FIRST!!!!!
OBAMA RESPONDED, HE AGREES. COZ HE KNOW ITS HIS OWN DAMN FAULT THIS IS ALL HAPPENING AND HE SHOULD BE BROUGHT OUT AND TAR AND FEATHER'D.
Obama reached out to McCain first this morning, not the other way around. Obama asked for him and McCain to issue a joint statement, to show unity, and hearing McCain speak you would never have known any of this. Pathetic. McCain is running scared. Obama has a solid lead in the key and swing states, and now McCain wants to run away from the debates? Sorry, but no. There is no reason why he should have to suspend his campaign or the debate, the bail out is not going to pass either way, and he is not needed in Washington.
I WANT THE DEBATE!
Re: kanga3 – #42 No, it's not genius. The fact that it has been reported that Obama was the one to contact McCain's camp about Barack's decision to stop campaigning shows that McCain can't think for himself.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid issued a statement saying the presidential debate should go on and that McCain's negotions should not be a "photo op."
"It would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation's economy," the statement said. "We need leadership, not a campaign photo op."
"If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now," he added.
They don't want them there so it's time for Obama to kick McCain's ass in a debate!
How odd. Just this morning I read BO was up by 9 points as welll as many Washington Republicans coming out saying McCain isn't the man for the job.
Re: fourtsixand2 –
You do realize that they have scheduled debates, right? These debates have been in the making for months, the only person running away is John McCain. You seem confused.
McCain saw the polls with Obama leading in economics issues. He is thinking, "Better find a way to tip that scale," and he pulls a bull shit move like this. So lame. I actually laughed when I read the headline.
Good for McCain.
I think that would be great, hopefully Obama will see this need and return with him and hopefully they can get something straightened out, it is time to work together to get our economy back on track!! And we aren't going to do it by slandering each side…
Why can't he do both? I see no reason to delay the debate.
Re: I See Drunk People – #43 You're an idiot. Do you even know anything about politics??? As an Illinois Senator, Barack Obama served on the Foreign Relations Committee, the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. He worked to get the Earned Income Tax Credit approved (that provided $100+ in statewide tax cuts), expanded early childhood education in the state and assisted in legislation to require videotapes of interrogations and confessions in capital cases (in response to numerous death row inmates being found innocent).
And there you have it.
hes skeered of obama. obama will go along with it though if not he will look like an ass
Just for the record - this is from the Capitol Hill Newspaper:
-
"John McCain has missed more votes than Obama — as well as any other senator who is running for president — except for our current president . . ."
-
-
only now McCain decides he needs to vote?
-
uh huh . . .
Well, lets review. Both Presidential candidates are Senators; both knee deep in this mess. To me, that seems like a diplomatic move which again, in my opinion, is a move that demonstrates diplomacy and leadership. But I'm sure all the narrow minded libs around here will say he's "scared". If Obama says no to this, I think that will be a VERY telling gesture. Just my little 'ole opinion.
Re: LULU~* – If you must ramble on about running mates, and it sadly appears that you must, let us think about the glorious Mr. Biden. In the past two weeks he has informed us that it is an American's duty to pay taxes. Mr. Jo Jo has yet to learn that it isn't his money…it belongs to the people. Then he fondly recalled when President Roosevelt addressed the country via television in 1929. Ahhh, my grandfather would love to tell stories about the magic box (since television wasn't invented in 1929) and how the real president at the time, Hoover, was apparently replaced by Roosevelt in a bloody coup. But everyone saw it on their television. Which hadn't been invented yet. Except for Joe "Wandering away from a nursing home naked" Biden.
I think he's full of shit.
CONSIDERING CONGRESS IS TRYING TO END THEIR SESSION AND LEAVE FOR THE YEAR, IT IS CRITICAL TO GET THIS PUT TOGETHER!
.
THESE PROPOSALS HAVE NO STRUCTURE AND MCCAIN THINKS HE SHOULD BE IN CONGRESS WHILE THEY HAMMER THINGS OUT!!
.
HE IS RIGHT!!
.
MCCAIN HAS BEEN BEGGING OBAMA TO DEBATE HIM IN TOWN HALLS ALL SUMMER AND CHICKEN WEASEL OBAMA HAS SPINELESSLY SAID NO!
.
NOW WEASEL OBAMA IS TRYING TO SPIN THIS AS MCCAIN TRYING TO GET OUT OF DEBATING!!
.
ALL SENATORS OUT THERE ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL NEEDS TO GET THEIR ARSES BACK TO DC TO GET THIS MESS STRAIGHTENED OUT!!
