This past year, philanthropy has opened my eyes to so much need and so much beauty. I have also realized how easy it is to help, and how rewarding it feels to be able to make a positive difference in someone’s life.
Last week, my friend Carlos and I brought a video camera to Beyond Shelter. Just the two of us. There are 175 children with families here, most of whom have been homeless at some point.
Today, they play in a concrete courtyard. Because of the neighborhood they live in, they have nowhere else to play. I met a woman who has ten children living in a three-bedroom apartment. The Beyond Shelter rec room only allows ten kids at a time. I wish you could all go there with me and see.
I’d like to share with you a glimpse of these beautiful children through my eyes.

Nicole, this is very sweet, but most of us actually have to work for a living. I love the celebrity take on "lets all come together and do something for the less fortunate". TRANSLATION: I have never had to work, don't plan on working now, but send me your money and I'll be glad to do something with it. " I'll send you some money if you will explain to the woman with 10 children what causes pregnancy and get her a tubal ligation. I think that could bring more light and laughter into all their lives and maybe teach her girl children to not make that same mistake. Or would that just be rude.
At least she is doing something not nothing and sitting back. She seems to have grown up a lot since her childs birth. Thats a good start.
However I think the cost of one of her purses or one of her designer dresses or one of her many baubles and trinkets would more than cover the cost of a playground for these children.
sorry nik but ive seen worse! i have my own issues, those people are eligible for section 8, food stamps, medical and cash aid. I know people in ca on section 8 that pay 8 bucks a month rent, and get all the above. they got it better than me! ugh!

Nicole, have you ever thought that maybe we all knew about these tragedies? And, FOR YEARS we have been volunteering at shelters, giving to the needy and helping those who need it most.

I'll bet she has a few extra rooms in her house. I've been donating to charities for years, while she was blowing money on drugs and partying, flying around in private jets, driving fancy cars. Call me when you give till it hurts, instead of peeling off a few hundreds from daddys money that he gave you.
I love how easy it is for her to make a difference. Has she ever worked a day in her life because she needed the money? Has she ever waited anxiously until payday? Does she have any concept of what it means for us to give vs. her? That fact that while yes we do give, it has a cost associated with it to those of us not born with millions. Certainly, pick a few charities that mean something to you and give a little, it does feel good, but something about this filthy rich woman telling me how easy it is to give, disturbs me. wth? those kids didn't look so bad, they looked clean and their clothes looked ok, a "concrete courtyard" is not that bad, that's what we had in our private school in Peru. And the whole "7 to 10 kids at the library" thing, well, it seems like a privilege to have it right there where they live, if they need more access to books, they can go to a PUBLIC LIBRARY, this country has some amazing public libraries. So besides having 10 kids living in a 3 bedroom apartment, which like other people mentioned, there's birth control to avoid that, what's the problem these kids have? Just because they can't afford fancy toys, an ipod or a computer doesn't mean that life is so bad.

Also, there's no need for us to go there with you…. we are the "normal" people of this world and we all have known for a very long time that situations like this are out there and have seen it first hand. I despise when a celebrity asks the public for money when they are sitting on millions and they feel bringing awareness is enough. Hey Nicole, send this video to Paris, her parents, Lionel, and all your friends. They have much more to give than the public. I feel for these people and hope they get their lives together, but there are multiple agencies out there who will assist. The problem lies when a consumer has to toe the line and follow rules to get assistance. I would say that some of these people have jilted the system before or has a record that prohibits public assistance. Maybe some are illegals. Its much easier to just have someone give it to you.

Some peoples comments are so stupid and cruel. This girl has grown-up and she is doing so much to help people and to help us help people. If you watch the video and paid any attention you will see that the text donates $5 to help them build a playground. I can even afford $5 even though i'm broke. Nicole just keeps better. She is a hot and she's helping others.

i dont feel bad for people who have too many kids. get birth control, use condoms (they are free at plenty of places) or stop having sex. people think they can have as many kids as they want because it's their right…t but us taxpayers shouldn't be held responsible for paying.

Those children are adorable. Looks like they are ready for fame, being that they are already on the Hollywood diet. I'm sure it's inspiring to visit their home. But it's probably more inspiring for someone like Richie who's financial status bares a staunch contract to theirs. Their upbringing couldn't be more different than Richie's, with exception to food intake.
I applaud Nicole's efforts to help those who are less fortunate, but here's a thought…how about you don't have TEN children! I am so sick of paying for these people who have children they can't afford to have. Take a look at your finances, if you can't afford to have a child, wait until you can.
I hope Nicoles read this. Hi Nicole I am very proud that you are well aware that there are needy struggling people in America. Yes not some third world country but American. I am happy that you have made a positove change not to live in your "hollywood" bubble and hope you do more to help others. I grew up and still live n one of the worst neighborhoods in brooklyn NY. lets just say my lil brother and his friends don't have a playground to play in but… thats just the least. Hey Nicole - How about you get some of your rich, overpaid celepretties to take care of the bill. You could all sell your own childrens overpriced designer clothes and have more than enough money to build your own shelters. Sorry but my money goes to the children on this planet who are actually starving because their parents can't get welfare.
I commend her and any others who contribute to this and any other cause however, if I happen to have an extra 5 bucks, I'm holding onto it bc that's a loaf of bread and a cheap jar of peanut butter to FEED my kid lunch for a week. Playgrounds are great but feeding my child is my top priority.
