Barack Obama vs. John McCain: Round 1

Filed under: Politik > Barack Obama > John McCain

obama.jpg

Did you watch?

Thoughts?

Here's the Obama campaign's official statement about their candidate's performance:

"This was a clear victory for Barack Obama on John McCain's home turf. Senator McCain offered nothing but more of the same failed Bush policies, and Barack Obama made a forceful case for change in our economy and our foreign policy. While Senator McCain wants to keep giving huge tax cuts to corporations and said nothing about the challenges Americans are facing in their daily lives, Barack Obama will be a fierce advocate for tax cuts for the middle class, affordable health care, and a new energy economy that creates millions of jobs. While foreign policy was supposed to be John McCain's top issue, Barack Obama commanded that part of the debate with a clear call to responsibly end a misguided war in Iraq so that we can finish the fight against al Qaeda in Afghanistan. John McCain needed a game-changer tonight, and by any measure he didn't get it." Obama-Biden campaign manager David Plouffe.

And the McCain campaign's take:

"There was one man who was presidential tonight, that man was John McCain. There was another who was political, that was Barack Obama. John McCain won this debate and controlled the dialogue throughout, whether it was the economy, taxes, spending, Iraq or Iran. There was a leadership gap, a judgment gap, and a boldness gap on display tonight, a fact Barack Obama acknowledged when he said John McCain was right at least five times. Tonight's debate showed John McCain in command of the issues and presenting a clear agenda for America's future." –Jill Hazelbaker, McCain-Palin 2008 Communications Director

    2

McCain kept lying all during the debate! Barack had to keep saying "john, that's not true". Is the reason for this that he doesn't have anything to say? Has he now caved on even his own principles? Or is he just forgetful?

  3. maryc says – reply to this

    3

McCain never talked about the Middle Class or Working Class. How's the elitist now?

  4. 4

well as bush jr proved, you don't have to be political to be presidential :P

  5. 5

McCain and his "campaign" is so full of shit! OBAMA '08!!!!

  6. maryc says – reply to this

    6

McCain now wants to tax your health benefits. Will cost us over 1 Trillion, yes Trillion dollars!

  7. 7

ha,wrong avatar,it was supposed to be sticking his tounge out.i hope mccain doesnt win, obama for the people baby!

  8. 8

Last night was a tie game with no overtime. Both could have done better.

  9. 9

Seriously, how full of shit was McCain?!

  10. 10

MCCAIN IS AN OLD COCK SUCKER. LOSER FUCK ASS PRICK.

  11. 11

Barack totally won it, and McCain just looked old.

  12. maryc says – reply to this

    12

Did McCain really say "horsesh*t" under his breath twice on TV.
    Discuss–what should his fine be?

  13. 13

    OLD ASSHOLE

  14. maryc says – reply to this

    14

Obama clearly won this debate and has now demonstrated to all of us that he is fully qualified to be Commander in Chief. He is even going to go get Bin Laden.
Go Barack and Joe the USA needs you more than ever.

  15. 15

    Re: maryc
they should take away some of his houses or cars,a fine wouldn't make that rich old fart learn a lesson,he has more sh*t than he can keep track of anyway

  16. 16

    McCain is a troll.

  17. maryc says – reply to this

    17

While your voting, if you can get rid of a House Republican do it now. They are stalling the rescue plan and trying to get big pay days for their friends on Wall street.

  18. nubsy says – reply to this

    18

neither was a clear winner, but mccain is a respectful debater, unlike the childish obama who made faces in the corner while mccain was speaking. really now, who is more presidential?

  19. 19

McCain did MUCH better. Obama bin biden with his uh uh, John's right, uh uh, stammerd his way through. People have to realize if he does win there will be change-horrible change.

  20. 20

HERE'S THE BOTTOM LINE EVERYONE: McCain MAY have done "great things" WAY back when—but those days are LONG GONE. He is elderly, sickly and has an atrocious Vice President. BOTH represent days and times LONG GONE (and thank God for that). I know a man who was a body builder in the 1950's. That was THEN…today he can no longer do that. All of the stress of this job alone would kill McCain. And how in the HELL can he be AT ALL in touch with this generation? Obama won this thing hands down. And this is coming from a HUGE Hillary supporter.

  21. 21

McCain is full of shit and a liar. Obama killed it!! I thought Obama was going to run over and bitch slap McCain, LOL.

  22. 22

    GO OBAMAAAAAAA!

  23. 23

    We're screwed either way.

  24. maryc says – reply to this

    24

JP Morgan just bought $310,000 mortgages for $19,000 each. I wonder if I could buy some of these for $25,000 a piece? JP makes a profit and I could now rent these houses out for about $500 per month to families who are hurting. Of course, someday I could sell these homes for $100,000 and make a nice profit.
Oops, Senate Republicans do not want me to do this. They want to keep this profit for JP Morgan while the current homeowner pays JP$2100 per month. Let's get rid of House Republicans, now!

  25. maryc says – reply to this

    25

House Republicans are proposing an private insurance plan. Horsesh*t, a big cause of this mess is the 45 Trillion in existing private insurance. This is what happened to AIG. They could not pay the private insurance and now needed a 86 Billion, 12% loan from us already.
Get rid of these idiot Republican House members. Now!

  26. 26

didn't like what either one had to say……..or how they said it

  27. 27

    OBAMA, FTW!

  28. 28

obama can go back to africa with kanye.

  29. 29

McCain is a damn old idiot! He lied soo much and twisted Obama's words and tried to make Obama look bad when he looked 100000times worst cuz who the fuck is going to believe that old coon? He was taking cheap shots and it was so obvious!

  30. 30

Obama is for anyone who has any common sense.

McCain is old, and out of touch, and a little bit of a "loose cannon" (not to mention his choice for VP, yikes!). Vote these two half wits in and you'll be starting wars with the whole world by the time the term is up.

  31. 31

Both sides declaring victory. Sorry but all McCain came across as was a WAR president. I get the feeling that McCain thinks he's still living in the Cold War era and that every war is fought by dropping bombs. So sad. Someone needs to explain to McCain that his Bush-driven war stance of dropping bombs is NOT accurate for the 21st century. Wars today = TERRORISM–and, as IRAQ has shown, dropping bombs don't = success, but arrogance. Terrorism needs to be fought with INTELLIGENCE. All McCain knows is how to drop bombs. I felt I was listening to him recount his life story rather than tell what he PLANS to do.
    GO Barack Obama.

    RIP Paul Newman.

  32. 32

i disagree with the statement from the mccain camp. i thought obama did a much better job, mccain kept stretching the truth and bullshitting everything. obama was clear and concise throughout. all of the polls and such that i have looked at had obama on top.

  33. 33

McCain clearly won. i thought obama was going to cry at the end. it only made obama looked worse that obama would laugh when mccain talked. he's so disrespectful and if he wins we're screwed

  34. 34

Re: nubsy – That's cuz McCain was lying and making crap up!!! You could tell that old fool was lying to cuz of the tone of his voice and how he said it like he was gossiping about Obama.

  35. 35

Re: Yadayada – im sorry but obama wants to pull out of the war but still fight terrorism. the reason we're in iraq and in afghanistan is because of a little thing called september 11th. if we end this war abruptly the terrorists will take that as a sign of victory

  36. 36

    Not important.
What is important is that you cast your vote in November.

  37. 37

mccain was the alpha male there
    .
obama kept saying "you're absolutely right" jeez he must hate looking at the replay. ouch
    .
he would probably say the same thing to iran's president, great…

  38. 38

OBAMA WON, HANDS DOWN !! MCCAIN IS A LIAR AND A LOSER !! BUSH DROVE ECONOMY TO RECESSION & MCCAIN WILL DRIVE US TO ANOTHER "GREAT DEPRESSION" CIRCA 1930'S !! HE COULD NOT EVEN LOOK OBAMA IN THE EYE DURING THE DEBATES .. AMONG ONE OF THE FEW GOOD THINGS HE HAS DONE IS ADOPT THAT A CHILD (BRIGETTE) FROM BANGLADESH ..OH WAIT THAT WAS DONE BY HIS RICH WIFE CINDY MCCAIN AS PER REQUEST FROM MOTHER THERESA !!!

  39. 39

The economic portion of the debate was a wash. Neither did well. But McCain was the clear victor during the foreign policy portion. Barack seemed like he'd read up very well for his rehearsed answers, which I'd heard before. McCain shot from the hip, drawing from his vast experience. No comparison. Barack ended up looking like a college debater debating an experienced head of state.

  40. 40

I believe Obama won, but there was no real knock winner. Obama just did real good on a night that McCain should have more knowledge on. But i hope at the next one Obama doesnt play denfense and knocks the old man out!!!

  41. 41

mccain showed everyone that he is out of touch with the american people as well as reality ( we're safer now than before 911) wtf planet is he living on? Obama ripped him a new one and the look on his face was priceless.

  42. 42

Neither candidates did a great job. That being said, Obama still stammered and stuttered nervously through his sentences. If he can't be confident when making statements about our country how can I be confident he would be right as President of the US. I am not thrilled 100% with McCain, but he will def get my vote this election.

  43. 43

    Obama/Biden 08!

  44. jefdo says – reply to this

    44

People just say the winner is whoever they intend to vote for. I honestly think McCain smashed Obama. Obama was getting flustered with all of his smirks to the camera, trying to interupt McCain, and continously signalling to the moderator to move on. McCain's comment about looking into Putin's eyes and seeing KGB and his comment about obama telling Ahmadinejad "no your not" were knock out punches. Obama had nothing to say to that.

  45. 45

I thought Obama won. McCain believe every sentence with taking cheap shots at Obama, he dodged his questions, and wouldn't give a straight answer. McCain statements were full of lies and half truths….. I was almost embarrassed for him. I cant believe that people would ACTUALLY consider putting this man in office. Do you really want another republican in office? Someone that has voted with Bush 95% of the time? Thats another question he wouldn't answer last night. Wake up America.

  46. 46

Perez, I'm just stocking up on the popcorn for the Biden/Palin debate. It's going to be bloody!!!!!! :)

  47. 47

ObAMaAAAA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! McCain is such a liar!!

  48. 48

    Re: elmo22292

You are obviously out of touch, I hope you aren't old enough to vote. September 11 is not why we are in Iraq, it is one very miniscule reason behind many. And to anyone that can read the obvious, Obama won the debate, hands down.

  49. 49

    neither impressed-
    but obama impressed less.

  50. 50

Okay, bloggers, you vote for Obama and see what you get. A total disaster. He was gobsmacked up there at the podium because McCain took him to school. You don't have to *like* McCain but Jeeeeez folks, Obama is less experienced than Palin! Use your brain. And while I'm undecided, leaning toward McC, Obama did n-o-t sway me one bit. Matter of fact, by the end when Obama was stuttering and stammering and using the wrong name for McCain, I was embarassed. He might've *looked* Presidential but once that wears off, you'll be stuck. And so will I. I'm pretty much a lifelong Democrat but seriously? Obama?? Friends with the convicted felon, Recko? Friends with the Weather Underground couple, Ayers & Dohrn? Don't you see the handwriting on the wall??????

  51. 51

    GOBAMA
    obviously
    clearly

    obama won
even if you don't like him
    you cant deny him

  52. 52

Barack Obama totally won. Mccain looked confused when asked some of the questions and went off topic because he didnt understand the question. He also kept talking over people. I kept expecting obama to go shut the fuck up and let me talk.Thats what I wouldve done. Last night made me happy and showed to the everyone why Barack Obama will be president.:)Thank god.

  53. 53

    Re: elmo22292Re: elmo22292

In actuality if McCain wins "we're screwed", likely to start war with half the world.

  54. 54

Re: misspositivity – Not in my book he didn't win.

  55. 55

I have no idea where I am voting was leaning Left til Obama kept agreeing with McCain. Major blunder to me.

  56. 56

    OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. 57

as an independent viewer watching the debate, i have to say MCCAIN BAROCKED OBAMA FLAT ON HIS ASS!!! lol.

  58. 58

    OBAMA!!!!!!!

  59. 59

Re: elmo22292 – Hey dumbass! The people in iraq had nothing to do with sept 11th! Bush went there cuz he thought they had nuclear weapons, and they didnt. They are not a threat to us and had nothing to do with september 11th. We need to be in afghanistan. Those are the people that bombed us. You idiot. Dont put down barack obama saying he was childish. He was not making faces, he was getting frustrated because mccain was talking over him and lying! Mccain was the one making faces and being disrespectful.Fuckin idiot!

  60. 60

I thought Sen. Obama did the better job of explaining his thoughts on the questions asked. McCain is too old for this job! The man is 72! Take care
of the Vets hey you should have done that 30 years ago. Why step up now?
I am saying this because I had family members in the war with him and he
did nothing to help them! He is all about war. Ready to lead this country no ready to have a heart attack trying! Back to the original question round 1 Obama! JMO!

  61. 61

    Re: meganashley – NOBAMA

  62. 62

I actually saw the debate and McCain kept going back to the 70's with Nixon and the 80's with Reagan. These are two fine examples of presidents that kept the economy together. He wants to go full steam ahead with the war and pretend to fix the economy. That's a scary thought - depression !

  63. 63

The most obvious and bizarre thing about the debate was that McCain NEVER ONCE looked at Barack Obama during the entire debate. McCain was grimacing and hunched over and looked extremely angry the entire 90 minutes. McCain looked old and out of touch and Obama looked at ease and confident. Obama understands and will fight for the middle class and McCain only fights for the rich. A man with 8 houses and 13 cars does not and will not ever fight for me or the average person. He just doesn't get it. VOTE OBAMA!

  64. 64

Obama was rockin' that debate. Mc Cain was skirting around the issues.

  65. 65

BTW, i am not in favor of this new insurance policy! This will be taxed to our yearly income. Slick McCain is tricking us into paying for Wall Street instead
of Main Street! I say bull shit. Bite me! JMO!

  66. 66

George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine.
A little over one year ago:

    1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
    2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
    3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%..
    4) the DOW JONES hit a record high–14,000
    5) American's were buying new cars,taking cruises,vacations overseas, living large!…

But American's wanted 'CHANGE'! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes–we got 'CHANGE' all right. In the PAST YEAR:

    1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ;
    2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon & climbing!;
    3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a10% increase);
    4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS and prices still dropping;
    5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
    6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~

$2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS.

YES, IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE…AND WE SURE GOT IT! …
REMEMBER THE PRESIDENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER ANY OF THESE ISSUES, ONLY CONGRESS. AND WHAT HAS CONGRESS DONE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.Stop and think about that for a moment
NOW THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT CLAIMS HE IS GOING TO REALLY GIVE US CHANGE ALONG WITH A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS!!!!
JUST HOW MUCH MORE 'CHANGE' DO YOU THINK YOU CAN STAND?

  67. 67

McCain won this debate…hands down. Although, I'm glad it ended when it did because I don't think I could've put up with another minute of Barack stuttering over his words. He starts every sentence like he's a cd skipping.

  68. 68

    Re: kyleandjenna

    Thank you!

  69. 69

McCain sucked ASS! I was SO embarrassed for him, shit he did not even act like a man, really he did not look at Obama ONCE. It was hilarious, we kept watching it going MAN up McCain and look at your opponent. How is he going to sit across the table in a tough discussion if he can't even look at the person!!! Next he did not discuss any plans, he just kept saying dumb ass shit like "the American people know me." McCain we want to know what you are going to do, answer the effing questions like Obama did!!! Tell us McCain, quit ripping on Obama and tell us what your going to do, Obama did it why can't you? You showed your not good enough to lead. I love your not even going to talk to Spain?? How are you going to negotiate if you can't build relationships? Have you not learned from Bush, it's our way or your against us does NOT work. McCain you can't lead, you can't even answer a question or lay a plan, all you can do is insult and make childish snid remarks, what a sad way to end your career! Obama is the man, Obama in 08, hell yeah!

  70. 70

McCain did great. He was the obvious winner. Obama just stood there calling him "Tom" and "Jim" and agreeing with him.

  71. 71

Re: Mandybea – speaking of "Loose Canon" didn't Biden just talk about FDR going on tv in 1929 when the great depression hit? hmm…I'm pretty sure HOOVER was president..and I DIDN'T KNOW THEY HAD TV IN 1929!! That's amazing!

  72. 72

One more comment….. McCain's attempt at being the hero who brought both sides together to save the economy fell flat and exposed him as an opportunist only interested in a photo op. If McCain gave a damn, he would have "suspended" his campaign 10 days ago and not when his numbers in the polls began to sink like a stone. This guy is as transparent as the day is long. Obama called his bluff and McCain blinked. Maverick my ass.

  73. 73

I'm relieved that most of the people posting will not be voting in November!

    McCain '08!

  74. 74

    David Beckham for President!
    And Posh for First Lady!

  75. 75

I think Obama did a decent job, not a knock out performance there, but DEFINITELY better than McCain.

I think Obama's frustrations came from McCain's blatant lies and stubbornness. It's one thing to spread lies and promote bullshit when you're campaigning halfway across the nation, but to stand in front of this man and spew bullshit and yank half-truths out of his ass would piss me off too. At this point it's understood that McCain is old as shit and broke out his scuba diving gear as Moses parted the Red Sea, but he's awfully arrogant and condescending for no real reason other than the fact that he's a vet.

Some of the attributes that come with aging is forgetfullness, stubbornness, and the assumption that 'with all age comes wisdom and fuck how the times, technology, and world changes.' If that man wins, we're doomed.

  76. 76

    Re: tina236 – I agree…I CAN NOT WAIT!!!

  77. 77

    FUCK MCCAIN…OBAMA '08!!!

  78. 78

    H. I. L. L. A. R. Y!

  79. 79

Re: PiercerJenn – Again….I 100% agree. If I were debating with someone who was (as usual) lying through his teeth and saying that I said something I DID NOT SAY I would interrupt his stupid ass & correct him too!

  80. 80

The show I do not want to miss is Hotlips Palin vs Hairplug Biden.

  81. 81

Not only does McCain keep going back in the past he seems to have NO concern for the everyday working class people who work hard to support their families…never once did he mention them. I believe the eyes are the windows to one's soul…..have you taken a good look into McCain's eye's? It's DARK in there!

  82. 82

Re: elmo22292 – Honey, you don't know what screwed is until we have a war monger as president. Just wait

  83. tessa says – reply to this

    83

    go! go! go! OBAMA !!!!!

  84. 84

Re: jefdo – because McCain is a straight up liar. Wouldn't it piss you off if someone blantantly lied to your friend, right in front of you and you had to be PC as possible to make sure as to not to piss anyone off. McCain said just two weeks ago he thought the economy was in GREAT condition. Now it's, "we are in bad times." Full of bullshit

  85. 85

McCain lost that debate plane and simple.. He couldn't even look at Obama in the face because McCain knew he himself was full of it.lol! He came off as an "old" father chastising his son,"Obama". Sen. Obama actually spoke directly into the camera at the American people. I believe that all week long Sen. John McCain's Campaign was fearing this entire debate, because they knew that their candidate was beyond "out of touch" when it comes to the "economic crisis" our country is facing. It is true.. i found it to be hilarious when sen. Obama called sen McCain…"Tom" & "Jim" a few times during the debate.lol.. But Sen. McCain showed his true colors last night at the debate! Sen. McCain is all about "War", building more "Nukes", Sen. McCain is in love with the idea of drilling for "Oil". You can tell he is not about searching for new forms of energy like "Clean Coal", "Wind", and "Solar". I mean McCain is the most uninformed, technology illiterate, and he is a war monger! We need Sen. Obama! People please don't vote off of the fact of your on prejudices. Please rise above your fear of America having a "African-American" president! Don't allow our great country to sink into the Abyss of a 21st Century "Great Depression". What i fear most is that not even Sen. Obama can fix our America that the "Republican" party drove into the ground for the past 8 years.

  86. 86

Re: SmellyVirus/MileyCyrus – As if that avatar isn't enough to give us all the creeps, so are you! A real man LOOKS YOU IN THE EYE when he speaks to you not up in the air, over to the RIGHT (lol) like a f-ing robot! If McCain were confident in what he says, he would have looked RIGHT at Obama and said what he needed to say but he NEVER ONCE did. He also NEVER ONCE looked into the camera with confidence the way Obama did SEVERAL times. Please go back to Hannah Montana and let the adults blog honey

  87. 87

Re: SmellyVirus/MileyCyrus – How wrong you are. I can't wait to vote Obama in. i just ordered my replacement voter card. :)

  88. 88

    Imagine this….

    McCain WINS the election.
McCain's ego and oil greed get us into World War III.
McCain dies from stress and old age.
Sarah PALIN is left behind to lead our country during a 3rd World War….(not good).

Seriously, there is NO way McCain is getting MY fucking vote! Anyone voting for him is a fucking IDIOT.

  89. 89

Re: kyleandjenna – He always speaks this way. If you have been objective through this whole campaign, you would understand that he has a habit of doing this. Really listen to what Obama says. He's right and he smashed McCain.

    Re: JERMAINE – AMEN!!!

  91. 91

Re: HeatherSL – OMG!!!!! Thank you soooo much. These people have no idea what they are even talking about. They are mezmorized by the fact that obama is black and cant see the REAL issues here.

  92. 92

Obama Showed grace, and humility, it was beautiful to watch.

McCain, was all squirmy and creepy, and never once did he look Obama in the Eyes, Very Disrespectful and in bad taste, besides the fact that everything he said sounded like Bush all over again.

    Team Obama!!!!

    He Clearly Won the Debate.

  93. 93

***LADIES***Get out your fans…Jermaine is in the room :-)

  94. 94

    Re: DanaMarie=] – classy.

  95. 95

McBush and his peeps are grasping at straws. Political and coperate greed have left this country in shambles. Instead of buying into all the material shite that an idiot celeb is hocking we need to be helping each other and wondering why we can't afford health care,it's all so wrong.

  96. 96

Re: lexington – That's worse than ANY Horror movie I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!! Seriously lexington, you just scared the SHIT out of me!!!!!!!!!

  97. 97

I think it's funny all you liberals keep saying mccain sucked so bad but obama kept agreeing with him…you're contradicting yourselves.

The day that I was born…."I've had enough of this," President Johnson tells his National Security advisors. He then approves Operation Flaming Dart, the bombing of a North Vietnamese army camp near Dong Hoi by U.S. Navy jets from the carrier Ranger.
Johnson makes no speeches or public statements concerning his decision. Opinion polls taken in the U.S. shortly after the bombing indicate a 70 percent approval rating for the President and an 80 percent approval of U.S. military involvement in Vietnam. Johnson now agrees to a long-standing recommendation from his advisors for a sustained bombing campaign against North Vietnam.
In Hanoi, Soviet Prime Minister Kosygin is pressured by the North Vietnamese to provide unlimited military aid to counter the American "aggression." Kosygin gives in to their demands. As a result, sophisticated Soviet surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) begin arriving in Hanoi within weeks.
    **
And, the US has been on a downhill spiral, ever since.
