Paul Newman has died.

The legendary actor and philanthropist died on Friday at the age of 83.

He lost a long, public battle with cancer, according to his representatives.

Mr. Newman generously gave hundreds of millions towards helping others during his lifetime. The Vice-Chairman of the thespian's charity, Newman's Own Foundation, issued the following statement to honor and celebrate one of Hollywood's greatest:

Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all. Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one's life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance. An exceptional example is the legacy of Newman's Own. What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company. And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds $250 million. While his philanthropic interests and donations were wide-ranging, he was especially committed to the thousands of children with life-threatening conditions served by the Hole in the Wall Camps, which he helped start over 20 years ago. He saw the Camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back, and raise a little hell. Today, there are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Through the Camps, well over 135,000 children have had the chance to experience what childhood was meant to be.

In Paul's words: "I wanted to acknowledge luck; the chance and benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, who might not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it."

Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humor, and humanness. His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much.

We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person."

Paul Newman leaves behind five children and his wife of over fifty years, Joanne Woodward.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Newman family.

  8. 8

what a wonderful man & actor. He is a great example of how to use your celebrity and money to help others less fortunate. Actors today should try and follow in his footsteps. A very sad loss.

  18. 18

I think my avi says it all about how physically beautiful this man was. Not only a great actor, but more importantly a great and generous man. He will be missed, I don't think we will see another like him.

  21. 21

A truly sad day. My thoughts are with Joanne today. So many great movies and a unbelievably good hearted man.

  22. 22

    very sad =(

  23. 23

    Re: tigger

He doesn't (didn't) live in Hollywood. He is my sister-in-laws neighbor in Connecticut. A terrific guy.

  24. 24

    first haha

  25. 25

I have Newman's own salad dressing in my fridge! Yummy! It's a sad day when the world loses a man like that. What a class act!

  26. 26

Truly a class act. RIP Sir.

  27. 27

PS. Perez he has FIVE surviving children. His only son OD'd in the late 70s. He created a foundation in his honor to prevent drug abuse through education.

  28. 28

So sad, truly a class act! Thanks Perez for leaving him and his family alone during these final months. I remember when you first reported the story and he looked very sick, I was happy to see nothing on him and his family having privacy!

Hearing this news made me so sad, he was a teriffic actor and a truly kind, decent human being.

  30. 30

Took you FOREVER to post about this, P-Dizzle! He was amazing…I'm sure a lot of actors looked up to him professionally, and personally. Who else in Hollywood has been married 50 years!? R.I.P.

  31. 31

    so very sad

  32. 32

Wow - is there anyone in Hollywood now that is remotely like him? I don't think so - married for over 50 years?!! Devoted to giving to charities his whole life (without asking for recognition - unlike Spencer and Heidi who can't even put in 30min at a soup kitchen without making sure it's documented). He will be sorely missed.

  33. 33

The world has lost alot today. Not just an amazing actor but a wonderful human being. R.I.P. Paul.

  34. 34

I *did* tell you that you were the only online 'big' tabloid that hadn't mentioned it, didn't I? Well, RIP Paul and thank you for the huge contributions you have made to movies, to charity and children…and all the good that you did. Condolences to your family.

  35. 35

Loved him, especially in the Color Of Money.
    Great actor, RIP

  36. 36

I watched Cool Hand Luke the other day for the very first time and thought he was wonderful in it. What a sad loss. God bless him and his family.

  37. 37

    awww…rest well Paul…I need a drink…

  38. 38

A wonderful man who should be an example to other people on how to lead a happy life by helping others less fortunate. Catch ya on the Other Side Paul, you will be missed on lifes stage.

  39. 39

i wonder if we get some kind of recognition for updating on these things. i emailed this to you early this morning.
rest in peace. atleast hes in a better place

  40. 40

  46. 46

Sad sad!! I actually believe he left behind 5 children…..one of his children sadly left before him some years back…..

  47. 47

Loved this man so much. So many wonderful givers have passed this year. I picture them all hanging out playing cards and talking about what a wonderful life they had. God bless their souls and their families.
    I will miss Paul Newman.

  48. 48

Oh my, what a loss! Cool Hand Luke/Ben Quick will be missed. Old school sexy.

  49. 49

sooooooooooo sad! R.I.P, the legend just left to the light!

  50. 50

    RIP.

  51. 51

Paul Newman had more class and grace in his pinky finger than most people in Hollywood today, and his 50+ year marriage to Joanne Woodward is inspirational. May everyone whose lives are blessed with the good fortune Newman had be as philanthropic, caring, and grounded as he was.

  52. 52

Sad day. He was a great man.

  53. 53

5 hours late………….and then you top it with a naked donut caper????………..weak

  54. 54

Fuck that's horrible!!!!!!! RIP good man. What a class act!!!!!

  55. 55

He was the perfect example of a class act! May he rest in peace.

  56. 56

Too sad. I wasn't a big fan, but from what I've read he was one of the good guys. Condolences to his family. R.I.P Paul.

  57. 57

    Rest In Peace Mr. Newman.

  58. 58

    so sad :( rip.

  59. 59

Truly one of the greatest actors and givers, and such a tremendous loss for the world. R.I.P.

  60. 60

    Thanks for the memories Butch!

  61. 61

He was truly a great man, a real hero through his philanthropic works to Americans and those abroad and a brilliant actor.

YOu will be missed Paul Newman, RIP.

People in hollywood should follow his lead to do some good works for people and the kids that are hurting and do more organic farming and do away with the pesticides they put on food. RIP may your life's story be a beginning to something great for all of us to do and become.

  63. 63

about time!! all the other sites got it much earlier. Great Man, Great Legend. RIP Paul-don't have stars of his caliber anymore

  64. 64

    Re: truthTELLER28

    YOU'RE A SELF RIGHTEOUS JERK.

Rest In Peace Paul … you were one of the greats.

  65. 65

    RIP Hud.

"I saw you standing outside with your shirt off, and I almost dropped my dishtowel."

Oh, this is sad, because they don't make 'em like this man anymore.

  66. 66

RIP Paul. You were truly one of the greatest actors around. We will all miss you very much. God bless you. :)

  67. 67

Re: Desr278 – I think he/she may be saying "bout time" as in "it's about time perez posted this." but if not, then yes, i agree

  68. 68

so sad so sad thank you for all you have done Mr.Newman

    we will miss you:/

  69. 69

God he had the most beautiful blue eyes I've ever seen in my life. I think I just found the perfect name for my new kitten - Newman.

It broke my heart, when I read about Mr. Newman's death this morning. He epitomized acting, philanthropy and humanitarianism. I am paying my own respects, to him, by playing every DVD that I have of him today…but, I can't wait until TCM does their all day 'tribute' (which they do when a cinematic legend passes away).
My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

  71. 71

    I just lost my grandfather.

My heart goes to the family, because before being a weel-known and respected actor, Paul Newman was a father, a pappy, a friend and a wonderfull generous human being. He is with god now, and I am sure that he is resting at peace, after suffering from cancer for a long time. I hope that I get to live until I am 83 like Mr. Newman, and still be as enigmatic and charismatic like he was. He truly had a great life. My thoughts and sympathy go to his wife and family. Goodbye Paul Newman. You will be remembered.

    xxox

  72. 72

What a brilliant actor and what a terrible loss to the entertainment world.

  73. 73

HE WAS A BENEVOLENT HUMANITARIAN ! MAY HE REST IN PEACE. GOD BLESS !!

  74. 74

As an actor he was good, and as a human being he was extraordinary. He was a true philantropist, giving away millions to those in need, he had a heart of gold. I'm told he was jewish, if so I say he was a really good jew, one I admired greatly and will never forget. Good Bye Paul Newman, may you rest in peace, but I still think that even at 83 you died too young.

  75. 75

this is a terrible loss. he was one of the greatest actors of all time and one of the very few you could look up to as a person. great actor. great humanitarian. great man.

  76. 76

i was genuinely saddened when i heard this this morning. what a legend and a class act he was. not much else to say really except R.I.P.

  77. 77

Now that is some damn bad news. Such an example of appreciating the incredible good fortune that fame can give you, and sharing it with others. Definitely a cultural light going out.

  78. 78

A great human,a legendary Hollywood actor,a TRUE ROLE MODEL is gone.may God rest his soul.

  79. 79

So sad to hear this. Paul was a class act that most of the up-and-coming wannabees will never come close to. It's sad that he's gone…my heart goes out to his family.

  80. 80

R.I.P MR. PAUL NEWMAN….AND THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES…

  81. 81

RIP in Paul, what a beautiful man. Hollywood take note he was married for over 50 years to the same woman. A reporter once asked him if he would
ever cheat on his wife his reply was classic! Why go out for hamburger when
you have steak at home! Take notes young hollywood this is how it's done.
Prayers to his family. Goodbye my Cool Hand Luke! Bet he left with a wink!

  82. 82

i'm a bit selfish on this, i'm so very sad that another of those very few good souls has left. the world is colder now.
but thank you perez (guess you know for what ;) )
    *sigh*

  83. 83

This makes me so sad. He was wonderful.

  84. 84

Today the world lost one of its few, very few good men.
    Rest in peace, old friend.
You might be gone, but you won't be forgotten!

  85. 85

What a class act he was. He walked the walk instead of talking the talk, unlike most of Hollywood. He avoiding the spotlight, did a lot of good with his philanthropy and all without making annoying political comments at awards shows. Loved him… as did all those in my (rather conservative) circle of family and friends — because he was one liberal who was not a hypocrite. A rare thing indeed.

  86. 86

He was one of the greatest….kindest….honest…..humblest human that graced all of us through his talent and his generosity…He has set the bar high for all of us to reach out to others in love and compassion…he made other lives just a bit more sweeter…..R.I.P. Paul Newman…..Condolences to his wife and family…Paul will be missed!!

  87. 87

I LOVE this man. I fell in love with him after watching him in "From the Terrace" a very romantic movie and he looked hot and very sexy in it.

  88. 88

I AM CRYING ALL DAY LONG…REALLY I LOVE HIM

  89. 89

    SAD NEWS RIP PAUL

  90. 90

not many people can have that said about them-

its remarkable to find an actor that is beyond their own narcissism, and can think bigger than themselves.
    R.I.P

  91. 91

While it did take you a long time to post this I am glad to see you did. I am saddened though to see the unflattering photo of Mr. Newman you've chosen to post. Every other news source posted much more flattering shots and not a pic of him looking away blinking while he is sick. Shame shame PErez. you know better.

  92. 92

… also, his spaghetti sauce is the best.

  93. 93

Well, he certainly lived a full life…

  94. 94

A great actor, humantarian, and person.
    Rest in peace.

  95. 95

Damn. I loved him…he was so hot once..

  96. 96

why don't you put a nice picture of him up?

  97. 97

Im gonna miss him. I hope his work will live on. May he rest in peace :(

  98. 98

Heaven is a better place today. Paul Newman was an extraordinary human being, a gifted actor and a wonderful philanthropist. Don't forget his great Newman's Own products, the proceeds of which– after taxes and production costs–were ENTIRELY donated to charity. Keep buying Newman's Own and keep Paul's legacy alive!!
