Flea Enrolls As A Freshmen At USC

You wouldn't think Flea would feel the need to go back to school, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist just enrolled as a freshmen at the University of Southern California.

Why????

He's pursuing a degree…..in music!

When asked why after years of success as a rock musician he felt the need to study Bach's chorales and four-part harmonies, Flea said, "Music is made up out of these building blocks. Studying how these blocks go together and what they consist of and the math of how it works — it's all the same stuff; it's just different aesthetics that we're talking about."

Flea, whose real name is Michael Peter Balzary, knows the value of music in school. He started the Silver Lake Music Conservatory after returning to his public high school and finding the music practice rooms neglected due to lack of funding.

Get ready for the all-night study sessions and hungover 9am classes!

Wow that's good for him!!!
Hope he succeeds, I know a few music majors and I know that it's a difficult major, but maybe he has some edge of the younger freshman with his years of experience playing music!

I think it is great that he is trying to further his education. If I had the money I would love to go back to college and get a second BA or a MA. It is never too late to expand your mind!!

Flea's not going to like it until he gets into 3rd or 4th year cause of all the psych 101, sociology and other non-music related electives he'll have to take. Regardless, he probably wants a degree to back up his well established music career, and then I bet his bass playing is going to get really crazy! After studying classical music, he'll see how annoyingly wanky and simplistic pop/funk music is and when he figures out those inverted arpeggios and other crazy baroque harmonics his mind is going to be blown! Good for going back to school Flea! You'll end up loving it!
