'Only' 57 Million Tuned-In

barackandjohn__opt1.jpg

Not too shabby!

According to early data from the ratings people at Nielsen, 57 million people tuned-in to see Barack Obama and John McCain debate for the very first time on Friday.

More people saw McCain scowl at Obama than the Friends finale (52.5 million)!

But, the first debate between W. and Kerry in 2004 scored a bit better than the first faceoff between this year's guys.

The Texan and the New Englander reeled in about 62 million viewers four years ago.

If YouTube and DVR watchers were counted we think the Obama/McCain 'viewer number' would be higher!

It was dissapointing to be honest. I felt like the two were trying to blow smoke up my ass and I didn't like it one bit.

    6. 6

McCain may have "scowled" according to you, but Obama could only agree with McCain and roll his eyes with every valid point McCain made.

      GO MCCAIN!!

Thursday nights felch fest is the one to watch!!!

    11. 11

McCain was scowling at Nobama because of the stupid giggling and studdering the ass was doing throughout the whole debate.

    12. 12

That's a very good thing. I said it before. I have never been paying so close attention to politics in the past. I thank you Perez actually for posting your political views. I have realized that nowadays your political post get more comments than average. It's clear your support for the Democratic party but this busy blog actually engage conversation among the people who visit this blog. Last election I voted and did not watched any of the debates. This is the very first time I am actually listening to what the candidates have to say and I know many people is in this same boat. So thank you! :)

      mmmmm…on top!

    14. 14

      maybe…in front of?

Re: swifty73 – that's right because people haven't said the same thing about EVERY election.

    16. 16

No wonder why we are in such a mess. The government knows that a majority of the American people are either to lazy to bother or to busy to care. Either way we are screwed.

Seriously who cares what either of these puppets has to say. It's much more important to be interested in your local representatives, congress is who makes the decisions people. BTW, the democrats have had control for quite some time now, so what do you think about their decisions that have gotten us into this mess? W is a complete idiot but the democratic congress has the blame squarely on their shoulders for a lot of this country's problems. They are as bad as each other, I wish we had more options.

    22. 22

Is your name Barack? "uh, um, uh, um, yes…yes it is"……….IRAQ Obama is a total moron! All you Dems that keep attacking Palin for her "lack of experience"…look at your own guy! He is a babbling contradiction and changes his story every damn day!

That is why his real name should be ZERObama!

    23. 23

On the other hand, it sucks that it did not get as much rating as expected. In any case candidates statement are not about rating. CNN was delivering articles as the candidates were speaking, media flood the internet and newspapers with excellent coverage so I don't think we should read too much on what the rating was.

    24. 24

      Re: Linds – lol

    25. 25

Haha, McCain did not "scowl" at Obama - if anything, it was the complete opposite. McCain was confident, cool, collected & smiled his head off. Obama looked like another pissed off black guy w/ a chip on his shoulder.

    26. 26

MCSTAIN'S NOT ONLY ADDICTED TO PREPARATION H BUT TO GAMBLING, TOO!

"GAMBLING'S ONLY A PROBLEM WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR OWN MONEY AND CAN'T AFFORD TO. FORTUNATELY FOR MCSTAIN, SIN-DY'S PURSE IS A BOTTOMLESS PIT–AND ALWAYS WILL BE AS LONG AS THERE ARE ALCOHOLICS FOR HER BEER DISTRIBUTING COMPANY TO EXPLOIT AND DESTROY."
      .
      .
IT'S TIME FOR MCSTAIN TO CHECK INTO A NURSING HOME–NOT THE OVAL OFFICE.
      .
      .
GET REAL, DARLINGS, WOULD YOU LET HIM DRIVE???
      .
FORTUNATELY HE DOESN'T HAVE TO–NOT AS LONG AS THERE'S 99 CENT QUARTS OF BREW BEING SOLD IN POOR NEIGHBORHOODS!!!!!
      .

    27. 27

not to mention NPR listeners. not everyone watches the idiot box…

    28. 28

To the few left defending Mclame & that idiot Piglin……just give up already. Obama won the first debate….Biden will spank Piglin……..Obama/Biden up in the polls. It's over repubes. All you have left is insults. So very very sad.
      .
      .
History will be made this Nov. Obama/Biden 08 BABY!!!!

      Re: LordKain – I agree

    30. 30

      Re: LordKain
      humph. insults.
and what do you call 'piglin'??

    31. 31

Undoubtably, both parties will declare their candidate the winner, however the most polls are giving the nod to Obama at this time.
      -
McCain did come across as crotchey and fussy, and the "bullshit" he muttered several times didn't help (I, for one, was SO hoping his MAD DOG crazy little man persona would emerge)
      -
      -
Still, I know its a moot point to discuss - both did well enough.

    32. 32

barack is only anti-war in iraq-he thinks we need more troops in afghanistan (we do), and intends to send them there. that isn't exactly a "no war" policy.

Re: kezza – what do you mean IT IS IMPORTANT WHAT THEY SAY THEY ARE ONE OF THEM WILL BE PRESIDENT AND STILL DEALING WITH THIS MESS. SO OF COURSE YOU SHOULD CARE WHAT THEY SAY… DUH! ONE OF THEM NEED TO TELL US HOW DO WE GET OUT OF BUSH MESS THAT MCCAIN SUPPORT 90% OF THE TIME.. WAKE UP!

    35. 35

If everyone thinks ending this war is going to solve the problems and bring world peace well you are WRONG. Obama is just telling everyone what they want to hear. Both these men will see it from a different view once they are in office.

    36. 36

Can anyone tell me where Obama placed his:
      1) Birth certificate
      2) College grades and papers
      3) Selective Service registration
      4) Illinois Senate records
      5) Medical records?????????

Also, where have they been hiding that loony wife of his? Did anyone read some of her college papers, she is borderline stupid but of course she got good grades because of affirmative action.

But wait, there is more. Besides the military, McCain has never had a real job and why do people like him take advantage of our government and make it a career? Those positions of congress were set up for people to serve and then go back home to their normal jobs, but McCain and a lot more of these idiots decide to abuse that privilage and make it a career of being addicted to power and influence.

We are screwed in 2008 people. McCain is a worthless gold digger and Obama is an empty suit.

    37. 37

Multipliers, Perez. There were a lot of people who had debate parties, so a many locations there was way more then one person watching. I'd bet the real number of viewers is closer to double the number they are claiming. That's good, bcz it means a lot of people are worried and will vote. All the debate watchers and voter registration doesn't mean anything if the turnout is low. I think it will be huge. I know I will never vote for a Republican ever in this life or the next. LOL!

    38. 38

Re: erhg74 – Not only are you a perverted homosexual, but you are stupid enough to admit that this is the first time that you have watched the debates. Idiots like you cancel out ever well informed vote from the other side. Not only are you a miserable, empty void of a person who will never be happy, but you even admit that are stupid and ignorant. Way to go chester.

    42. 42

Obama DID NOT say no war, Perez. He sadi he would send more troops to Afganistan. Weren't you listening? Or were you too busy jacking off?

    43. kezza says – reply to this

      43

Re: LS – Clearly you don't understand how government works these days. The President is a figurehead with very little real power other than veto power. You honestly believe it's the president alone that makes the decisions that run/ruin this country? People that think that way and vote based on party lines are the reason we are in this trouble.

    44. 44

WRONG, PREZ, WRONG. We know you are a democrat, but please don't outright spread lies! McCain has stated very clearly on several occasions he does not want to see anymore bloodshed or physical violence in the middle east and he wants the war to end. He also made it clear he will keep troop STATIONED over there for as long as it takes FOR THE PURPOSE OF KEEPKING THE PEACE AND OVERSEEING ACTIVITIES. But radical, misguided, stupid democrates like you, Prez, will take that and twist it around to interpret "war". No. Do your proper homework and research before commenting.

    45. 45

let me say in regards to your war, no war picture statements that john mccain said war with anyone else would be a last resort but he wouldn't hesitate if we or our allies are attacked.
      .
also, i want to point out that obama is "committed" to "protecting" us, and Israel if they are threatened by anyone, including Pakistan, Iran or any other Islamic country. So if Iran made a move on Israel (which could be in the realm of possibility soon) then he would send troops to help fight with them. (As would McCain obviously) But you people need to realize that IF, Obama sticks to what he says, then how is he less war-mongering than McCain?
      .

    46. 46

i watched on youtube…..and i still don't know who to vote for. i don't trust either of them…

    47. 47

Re: kezza – Amen. Finally someone with a brain. Presidents do not have nearly as much power as what is believed by the public. That's why I get so sick to my stomach with the Bush bashing. Everything has to be approved by congress, which may I remind you, my friends, is majority democrat. Presidents have very, very little effect, if any, on the economy. The markets are pickle, finicky, elaborate, multifaceted, complex systems that are controled and determinded by a very large amount of different influences domesticly and internationally. That's why there are TONS of "theory" books devoted to trying to understand and predict the market and economy. No one understands it; it is a great mystery. Let alone on person be in control and responsible for it.

    48. 48

McCain's Diva Queen attention getting move to "suspend" his campaign really fell flat, didn't it?

    49. 49

Re: Genghis Khan – re McCain's comments on the war — did you watch a different debatet than I did? McCain repeatedly made comments that we were "wining" and should continue.
      -
Winning what, I might add? The search for Weapons of Mass Destruction (remember, that IS why we went to war - no excuses to other motives, please - THAT was the pretense).

    50. 50

Re: Sal – Seriously, I was yelling at the TV for one of them to stop giving us promises and start to offer explanaitions as to how they were going to fufil those promises. BTW wasn't this debate to be on foreign policy and how our economy will effect it??? All I really heard was domestic issues and how the economy has an effect on it, and of course BS promises.

    51. 51

      This is interesting:
      -
McCain is a documented craps player. He has been known to play craps on impulse for 14 hours at a stretch.
      -
Anthony Holden comments, “We poker players don’t call poker gambling. It is a game of skill. Craps is an absurd game of luck. You may have thrilling short term wins but only madmen play craps.”
      -
Matthew Yglesias notes, “The McCains own eleven houses and spent over $200,000 on ‘household staff’ in 2007 so I suppose he can afford tens of thousands of dollars in gambling losses every year.

    52. 52

It was Friday night. I was more worried about partying. I watched it on the internet later.

    53. 53

McCain has far superior knowledge of this world and if you want your President to be stupid and goodlooking with just the appearance of knowledge then we are in big trouble. McCain won because he had Obama on the defense the whole debate. I love the idea of having a President THAT WANTS TO WORK ON BOTH SIDE OF THE AISLE. GO MCCAIN!!!!

    54. 54

Obama is a stuttering idiot! Full of fluff… Tim, Tom….NO JackA$$…his name is JOHN….smooth talker and hand gesturer, that's all Obama is good at doing.

    55. 55

Debates are nothing more than blowing smoke up people's asses and out talking the other. I know they can both talk, I don't need to see them do it.

    56. 56

It's kinda hard not to watch when it was on every Los Angeles channel.

    57. 57

Re: gypjet – isn't Democracy the greatest thing on this world? Aren't you campaigning for people to vote Yes in CA. Well, love that you feel the way you do. Yes it's the very first time that I worry about politics cause it's the very first time in my lifetime that things have gotten so messed up and I feel there is something to be done. My expression "Vote an express my opinion". I love this country. lol

    58. 58

Perez, Bush is not from Texas- he is from Connecticut

    59. 59

Ha, McCain "scowl" at Obama? The more accurate description is that Obama was rolling his eyes at McCain. Very mature.
