Bollywood's on Strike!

Shooting on all Bollywood films have come to a halt!
10,000 film and television workers went on strike beginning today, Wednesday, halting production on dozens of projects.
The strikers are protesting inadequate, irregular pay, and the presence of non-union workers on set. In some cases payment has been delayed for as long as a year, and even when workers receive payment, it is for less hours than they put in.
Movie stars - including Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan - along with dancers, writers, and technicians have ceased work indefinitely.
Dinesh Chaturvedi - general secretary of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees - says that they are not pleased strike, but that they are "helpless" otherwise. The Federation operates as the all inclusive union of Bollywood workers and this is the first time in its 50 years that they've called a strike.
Bollywood churns out about 1000 films a year, holding its own against the industry in the States. The strike comes at a critical time, potentially dealing a blow to India's film festival season.
Producers and broadcasters are understandably "anxious" for a speedy resolution.
Ratan Jain - president of the Association of Motion Picture & TV Program Producers - is likewise eager for a solution. He says that the Association is working on a deal to present to union representatives tonight.
They better agree to start coughing up workers' dough, cuz a year without pay just isn't fair!

good point…comments like these are why americans get criticized day in and day out for not giving s**t about anything that goes on outside of our borders. this attitude is exemplified by our mockery of a president.

good on them, i've worked on bollywood films shooting outside of india and my experience was that pay rates were terrible, contracts were breached by production, and they had complete disregard for how things were suppose to be done in the country they were filming in when employing local crew/dancers/extras. often payment wasn't received either. not cool!
somebody who continues to work and not get paid for a year, is a fool-no matter what country you are from. I know the cultures are different, but all those actors have to be doing better than the average citizen. Otherwise, why would you continue to do it and not get paid on time? I just don't think most strikes here are counterproductive-you normally lose whatever increase you are getting the 2 or 3rd day of the strike. I don't know if in india it is the same.

I care. Bollywood is 500 times bigger (and better) than hollywood. Its India's biggest industry/cash cow and is going to be a HUGE deal.

For all yu ignorant little Americans - Bollywood is the biggest and most lucrative film industry in the world and is the main source of entertainment for one of the worlds most populous nations! Its massive in Sri Lanka (which is where I'm from), Pakistan and any other country with an Indian minority as well! So trust me, people will care if its on strike! I'm at uni here in Australia but I can just imagine the amount of media coverage this is getting in the Indian subcontinent!
And I just have to say this. If Americans actually vote for McCain (with Palin as his running mate), I will truly believe they are the DUMBEST nation alive!

Yeah, Bollywood movies aren't just watched n appreciated in India. They are loved throughout South Asia, the Middle East, and even in parts of Eurasia and Africa.
