Anti-Smoking Gets Graphic

Here's some good news for people trying to quit smoking.
Starting Wednesday in Britain, cigarette boxes will feature printed images on the packets showing just how gruesome and harmful smoking can be.
The pictures will show cancerous lungs and throats, as well as yellow teeth and other side effects.
They'll also feature new warning slogans, such as "Smoking can cause a slow and painful death" or "Smoking clogs the arteries and causes heart attacks and strokes."
Warnings will start appearing today and will be mandatory starting next October.
They'll also be printed on all tobacco products starting October 2010.
Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) director Deborah Arnott said, "The stark images in the picture warnings on tobacco products are a call to action to smokers to quit, and the evidence is that they work. The evidence also shows that picture warnings work better on plain packs, so we are urging the Government to also implement legislation to require the removal of pack branding to maximise the impact of the these images."
Just in Britain, one in six from their population of 60 million is a smoker, which is the reason the government has been taking action to reduce the numbers.
Other preventive measures have also been put in place.
In the UK last year, the smoking age was raised from 16 to 18. Also, smoking in enclosed public places was banned across the country since July 2007.
Wonder when/if they'll start using those images in the US.

I'm glad you posted this Perez because smokers are in major denial about what it can do to them. There is these type of deaths but the aunts in my family who smoked died of heart attacks in their early 60's. And those who didn't smoked lived until almost 90.

This is wonderful. I'm a former smoker and I use to go to the national heart association website and look at stuff like this every time I had a craving. Now I see someone light up a smoke and I just feel sorry for them because I know how difficult it is to kick. This is good thing!

Don't smoke. Even if your friends are doing it and it seems like a cool thing to do. It isn't. If you think you can't get really sick at a fairly young age from smoking, think again. I started smoking at 15, and had lung cancer at 35, and had to have almost a full lung removed. Then got cirrohis from drinking and had to have a liver transplant. A lot of people feel they are almost immortal, and that these kinds of problems only strick people when they are much older. If it wasn't for the grace of God to bless me with a second chance, I wouldn't be typing this right now. I would have been dead 5 years ago. Don't smoke at all, even grass. Drink in extreme moderation. If you're not doing that, you're really asking for it, just like I was.

Old news….We've already had shit like this on our smokes here in Canada for years….
they've been using these ads on cigarette packages for like over eight years in Canada….It doesn't matter. A picture isn't going to make someone stop smoking. If paying $13.00 a pack doesn't stop them, nothing will.
In Canada, similar pictures (although less shocking) are printed on cigarette packs. In Québec, there is also a provincial law in effect that makes it illegal for store owners to even show a pack of cigarettes. Therefore, they have to hide tobacco products from the customers. Not so sure if those measures had any effects on tobacco use though.

Hmmm, let's see…You can't kill somebody DWS (driving while smoking) and the last I heard you can get cirrhosis of the liver from drinking, disrupt your family life, etc. Why the big rampage and higher taxes on cigarettes and bans and graphic pics but nobody ever makes a big hairy deal over what drinking does to you. Canada has had packs similar to these for years now. In most of Canada cigarettes cannot be displayed in stores and are hidden with big ugly grey blinds. In british columbia you cannot smoke 30 yards from any doors or air intakes, no smoking inside, no smoking in parks or on any school grounds. One of the packs we have is a limp cigarette saying that says tobacco use makes you impotent.
Yeah, why does Japan have the HIGHEST rate of smoking and the LOWEST rate of lung cancer? Maybe its because if you don't eat the shitteaous american diet of poor tortured animals and fat the cancer doesn't have the fuel to grow. Get the story right.
