Utah Bans Flavored Malt Beverages (aka Wine Coolers)
Blame the pesky kids!
As of today, Wednesday, Utah will be the only state in America to ban the sale of fruity alcoholic drinks at grocery stores and convenience stores in an effort to keep them from minors.
But what about adults that like the malty concoctions????
Not fair!
In fact, come soon, you may not be able to get things like wine coolers, Zima and Smirnoff Ice in Utah at all!
A new law says that such drinks must now have new state-approved labels on the front of the product that contain capitalized letters in bold type telling consumers the drinks contain alcohol and at what percentage.
Liquor companies are saying the economics of creating labels for fruity alcohol headed to Utah just doesn't make sense for them.
Do y'all in Utah even really care?
Jesus drank wine! If he were alive today, he'd drink a Smirnoff Ice!

Who cares? I love Utah. It's such a beautiful state.
Re: Furbyfucker –
Horney Cyrus Your too funny
oh fantastic utah! now they will graduate to better shit, like vodka, whiskey and brandy, oh my!
in order to make a "fruity drink" you need the hard shit, plus juice. I'm sure kids in utah aren't rocket scientists at 14 but i'm sure they can mix
wonder mileys pic is there….
I for one am sick of this crap , my husband's in the Air force and we are stationed in Utah. Let me just say this place is nuts , they have so many laws pertaining to liquor it's ridiculous, it's purely because they have no, or very very little separation of church and state, and they allow their church( LDS ) to influence far to many of their choices, not taking in to consideration that those of us who don't share their faith and may want a good drink on the weekends
I love the stupid laws they create in order to "prevent kids" from doing something. Why don't they make stricter enforcement laws, like New York, where you must card EVERYONE no matter their age when buying liqueur?
THERE GOES THE NANNY SOCIETY AGAIN THINKING ZERO TOLERNCE WITH SOLVE EVERYTHING!
zima and smirnoff ice suck anyways… they SHOULD be banned…… for nastiness
I'm not sure why the article says that Utah is the first state to do that…In Pennsylvania you cannot buy ANY alcoholic beverage in the grocery store or convenient store
Re: auds – EXACTLY, IN ONTARIO, CANADA THEY ASK ANYBODY WHO LOOKS UNDER 30 YRS OLD FOR ID! THEY HAVE THIS SIGN UP AT ALL THE STORES!
well atleast i dont live in the utah
Good point Perez. Jesus did drink wine and he turned water into wine. Herein lies the turn-off with most religions: LEGALISM. You can't do this, but you can do that. Like Prince and being a JW… it's so constricting that people rebel. No celebrating b'days/holidays, etc. Other religions say no meat on Fridays. Keeping your head covered at all times, etc. Again, legalistic crap! More wars have been started over religious differences. Sad but true.
Re: harrybalsac – when are we gonna start shooting im getting antsy over here
Re: iliross – LOL!
I live in Utah and believe it or not there are young, liberal, people in this state who DRINK. [insert shocked response] While we have better taste than Boone's Farm, it is still annoying and ridiculous.
my first drink as a kid was a wine cooler i stole from my mom.
Re: LettyB – what is old man even talking about a few posts back to the smoking post
Jesus would not drink Smirnoff Ice! He wasn't gay or a bitch.
BOB!
Mario!!!! Your frustrated stalker/pedophile obsession with Miley is showing again. Your 30 years old. When are you going to grow up?
that shit is for pussies
go for the REAL stuff.
wine coolers. gimmee a break!
Re: Amanda loves weezy f baby – I MADE A COMMENT ABOUT TO ONE OF THE ANTI SMOKERS AND THEN SOMEONE CALLED ME AN IDIOT AND THE PEDOPHILE AGREED WITH THEM! HE'S JUST A FUCKTARD! I THINK HE LIKES ME!l LOL!
Smalls-
What kind of nuts was I thinking of?
BAAAAAAAAAA-HAAAAA-HAAAAAA!
OMG I can't even get to article … still laughing my ass off at that PIC!
Fucking hilarious.
BEAVER FACE!
haha
lmfao. i love how you put a picture of miley up when the article is about booze.
I'm an avid Utah drinker and I find this ridiculous. I don't know what the fear is here with alcohol. I suppose, I'm back to my loyal White Russians.
wow ass. why do you hate miley? you act like you know her. fag
.
Re: Bend It Like Bradshaw – That is so true. More people have died because of religioun than any other thing. Not many people know that. Wish we could have cocktail and discuss.
Re: SarahBeth84 – Actually, the LDS church has NOTHING to do with this. I live in Utah, and manage a restaurant here, and I'm TOTALLY sick of the laws, they're WAY too restrictive. While we are the state with the lowest alcohol related crime index, it's still dumb. As for this being the LDS Church's fault, they actually just came out with a message in response to the State thinking about doing away with the "membership" laws the turn bars into private clubs. The LDS church law wants to deregulate the laws concerning alchohol, because they restrict freedom too much. More important than following the "don't drink" thing is allowing people to exercise their God given right to freedom of choice. So it's not the LDS Church's fault……
I consider this a victory for anyone in Utah with taste buds. That shizz is all kinds of nasty.
How is that protecting minors. Don't you have to have proper identification to purchase alcohol?
fuckkkkkkkkk miley looks like a fuckin chipmunk wth her fat face and buck teeth…
I love in utah and I think its ridiculous. Mormons fucking run thing place and its annoying. The beer here is nasty because it has less alcohol then anywhere else! SO STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I live in Utah….and its TERRIBLE….HELP ME! We have memebership fees we cant get a good beer and now we have to go to the liquor store for EVERYTHING son of bitch…..
I lived in that shitty ass state for 1 year and let me tell you, if you're not mormon don't bother going. You can buy liquer at a liquer store however that's it. You have to drive to Nevada to get beer and other shit because the state of Utah doesn't allow beer to be sold at grocery stores. Mormons beleive that if you drink it may change your state of mind and you may decide not to be mormon any more.
I'm sure that there isn't a huge gay population there mainly because they wouldn't be able to have 5000 kids to get closer to god. The only people I know who drink these fruity little drinks are gay people. Therefor I find this story completely irrelivent(just like most of this site) and just because this hurts your fruity little feelings Perez, no one cares.
Ps, you're still a jackass perez!
Re: ollygurl –
Poligamy Porter is pretty good, especially when you drink it with all your wives.
Re: cmmrm80 –
Bull shit. You're just an offended mormon trying to stick up for what you think is right but we all know isn't.
Re: aubbra –
if you like the color of shit, it's definately gorgeous!
Once again, Perez has the facts distorted. The new law was created soley to protect minors since the alcohol companies don't seem to really value public safety in marketing these types of drinks to them in the first place. This is why they make them "fruity" or flavored like lemonade. It is a public safety issue period! The law does NOT ban them from the state, they simply must be sold out of a liquor store instead. You mean to tell me that you desperate for a drink drunks can't drive to the liquor store? Maybe you're too inebriated to begin with. Grow a brain stem you morons!
GET ME THE FUCK OUTTA UTAH! AHHHH Lol it doesnt matter anyways I guess, Im under 21, but I can still go get good and wasted at house parties.
So what's the picture of the Cyrus hoebag got to do with malt liquor now? Is she being shagged by a brotha?
I live in Utah and if you want to drink alcohol you just know that you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to do it. The laws don't make it so you can't drink, it's just more of a hassle to get certain types of alcohol. It doesn't affect me too much because I only drink alcohol occasionally. The only time it bothers me is if it's a Sunday and I would like a bottle of wine but can't get one because the liquor stores are closed on Sunday.
cmmrm80: I hate to say it but the LDS church does control the laws in Utah. All the Mormons, and you (I don't know if you're a Mormon or not), can say there is a separation of church and state until they're blue in the face, but the rest of us know it isn't true. Since most of the people that are making the laws in Utah are Mormons, they are definitely controlling the laws. The Mormons can deny it all they want, but non-Mormons living in Utah can attest to how ridiculous their denials are.
Anyone with a half a brain knows that Smirnoff's and all that jazz has alcohol in them. I hate living in Utah.
What does a fat beaver have to do with malt beverages?
In New Zealand you can only by them from an alcohol store.
Supermarkets and convenience stores can only sell Beer, white, port and cherry.
So get over it.
ghjg
ok seriously some of you need to stop crying. yes it's true there are a hell of a lot of mormons in utah–they're like cockroaches, they're not going anywhere no matter how annoying you find them–and guess what since they're the majority in the state the laws passed there are going to reflect they're objectives! Get a clue, and if you don't like it than fucking move, but for god's sake stop bitching–you're more annoying than the stupid law.
If Jesus were alive today he'd be smoking the herb.
PS The new season of Big Love is supposed to start in January.
How is Utah the only state? I live in PA and there is no alcohol sold in grocery stores or convenience stores, the only thing you can buy at the grocery store is the mixers.. making it even more fun, you also have to go to separate stores to buy beer and liquor.
you act like Utah is so unique. I've lived in NJ my entire life, and in 24 years you've never been able to buy alcohol anywhere other than a liquor store, or a restaurant (and even at the restaurants it isn't carry out). get over it.
So, I'm pretty sure Utah is only like, 40% Mormon- it's kind of like being a Catholic in Wisconsin. It's a conservative state, you're going to have conservative views. If you don't like it there…move. No one is forcing you to stay.
As for good old Wisconsin- We have beer with everything. And people wear their Packer shirts to weddings….whatever.
I live in Utah, and its not like its any difference as it was before. We just have to go to the STATE licor store to buy any of it, and if you are at the licor store why would you wanna buy BOONES anyways. Get some Vodka, Rum, Wine and whatever. The beer here in Utah is like water. Luckily we live close to NV so we can jump the border for the real goods
If Jesus were alive today, he would turn your sight into something actually factual, and good.
Re: cmmrm80 – AAAfuckingmen i also live in utah. and my girlfriends in high school would steal those fruity drinks all the time from stores. it has nothing to do with the mormon chruch if anything, stores are too trusting
gosh, you people should live in pennsylvania…
one store to get beer
one store to get liquor and wine
and THEN,
of all things,
you gots to go to the guy on the corner for your rock.
so to get your party ooonnnn……….three stops.
IT FUCKING SUCKS
Why is Chipmunk Cyrus picture on this post….
if he were an effeminate teenage boy or a 13 yr old girl he'd drink a smirnoff ice, but hes not…
new jersey has similar laws. u can only buy acohol in liquor stores and bars. sucks
Another silly waste of my state's time and money. I grew up in and still live in Utah and I can tell you that most underage drinkers don't drink these so-called "alco-pops" anyway. When you are a teenager you mostly just want something cheap. You can buy an entire bottle of vodka for about the same, if not less than you can get 4 Bartles & Jaymes. Not to mention that drinking wine coolers will usually get you hassled, ripped on, and made fun of. Most teens would rather a case of Milwaukee's Best before fruity drinks. This is just another thing for the legislators to do to pat themselves on the back and have uninformed non drinkers buy into that it is somehow beneficial.
Just like the ads they have everywhere in the state trying to convince you that if you drink when you are 20 it fries your brain more than if you drink when you are 21.
Not to mention that our legislature ought to be spending money trying to figure out why Heroin is the new Marijuana here - try to solve a real problem - the fact that the new teen experimental drug of choice here is Heroin - that would be worth your time. Not transferring something from one store to another.
Not to mention - this is not our only insane liquor law.
You cannot order a Long Island anywhere in the state. That drink, per it's alcohol content or whatever is illegal and cannot be sold. You are not allowed to have a side car. You cannot order another drink until you have fully consumed the drink you already have - and that drink has to be cleared before your second drink can be set down. You cannot order alcohol in a restaurant unless you have the intent to eat, if you aren't eating they are not supposed to serve you.
Gotta love Utah - we make the national news for things like people boycotting Victoria's secret displays
I live in utah and I'm pissed. I love to drink bacardis and stuff. I guess I'll have to have mixed drinks instead. Those dumb lawmakers. When I was a teenager, I never bought alcohol I just snuck it from my parents. I used to drink lemonade and vodka because it was available. This will not accomplish anything.
This is the shitty shitty part of living in UT!! Our beautiful state is ran by a bunch of pill snorter, pill popping, kave drinking IGNORANT Mormons who believe if you aren't Mormon you're not good(aka NOT GOING TO HEAVEN). Funny that UT is number one in anti-depressants and close to that in pain pill addiction. It's sad cause a lot of people would be so much happier if they weren't forced to have a facade for everyone. It's annoying and it gets old believe me! But Utah is gorgeous and eventhough under the bubble spell you can't beat snowboarding in the winter and wake boarding in the summer.. Not all of us who live in Ut are Latter Day Saint psychos who don't party. As for the polygamy that's bullsh#t! You don't see much of that at all really and those people ARE NOT MORMON they are FLDS -BIG DIFF-. Although I wouldn't mind having 10 husbands to take care of me!!
Whats next, prohibition? Thats stupid.
To all the people that are saying "I live in Utah, and I hate it..blah, blah, blah" Here is my response to you: MOVE! Leave, we do not need people like you waisting our air, and taking up our space. You dont like living here, then get the f*ck out!
I love Utah!
Malt beverages are NOT wine coolers! They are flavored malt liquor not fermented grape juice.
Please, you can't buy anything alcoholic at a grocery store in NJ.
… that Miley??
I live in Utah but am not LDS. I think that comment #38 is the most correct, this law has nothing to do with the LDS church. Nor do I really think it is about keeping the drinks out of the hands of minors. Utah is considered one of the most greedy states. By making people buy more drinks in their liquor stores the state makes a lot of money, A LOT of money! I really think this is just a way for them to keep making more.
why dont they crack down on NOT selling to teens…hmm
Actually, it's not the only state. You can't buy any alcohol (including fruity drinks like smirnoff ice) in convenience or grocery stores in Pennsylvania. You have to go to a state store.
It doesn't matter what stupid laws people make, kids will find a way to drink. I live in Utah and sometimes it seems like the people here think any drinking at all makes you an alcoholic. If our laws weren't so retarded maybe more people would come on vacation here cuz we have tons of sweet stuff. I am Mormon and I definitely don't drink, but I think these laws are way retarded and people should be able to get a drink if they want and parents should just be more responsible for underage kids.
Gross…I think that stuff is nasty anyway. Cab Sauv is the way to go.
Dang… prohibition, much? Remember your US history, Utah? PROHIBITION DIDN'T WORK!!!
Perez check your sources, "Utah will be the ONLY state in America", hmmm last time I checked I live in Pennsylvania and oh wait we can't buy ANY alcohol at grocery stores or convenient stores. The best we can get is drink mix.
Smart move Utah.
Where we live the drinks have been gone from the supermarket for a long time and you can only get them at the liquor store.
Look kids just see funky colors and taste something sweet, until they hurl all over your new sofa or carpet and cant stop drinking it, get depressed and basically turn into teenage alcoholics.
Barcardi Breezer, smirnoff ice…sorry guys but it's booze, it shouldn't be that easily available to kids
I live in Utah & I'm also mormon but it doesn't stop me from having an occasional drink…Malt Beverages suck anyway!
If your old enough to drink then who cares about this new law, it wont affect you anyway!
Utah has just shot itself in the foot. Utah calls the wine coolers "alcopops." Now they can only be sold in state run liquor stores–where they will receive an 86% mark up over the normal retail price. Important: Grocery stores will now lose millions of dollars in sales AND the STATE is going to lose tax revenue as a result of their Mormon-based legislation. Utah is truly dumb. It is the only state in the nation who gives Bush a high approval rating and who applauds George W. Now they are the only state to ban the silly drink–all to Utah's own detriment. Idiots I tell ya!
I hail from the hipocritical state of Utah, where the boundaries between church and state are so blurred that no one can effectively run the state government. I personally voted against this ridiculous law, it was supposedly to keep these "alco-pops" out of the hands of underage drinkers. HELLO!!! anyone can get alcohol, all they need is someone who is 21. And all these young girls have to do is shake their tits at aguys and he will do whatever she wants. It was all just a ploy so the state can reap far more tax benefits by classifying it as liquor. because we all know the sales tax on alcohol (sin tax) here is retardedly higher. They are also trying to ban smoking in public places such as parks, bus stops, bars, and the like. Either way, if shit gets any worse I am going to move away from this so called "Zion".
Re: SarahBeth84 – This law was put in place to keep minors from alcohol. It's not the only thing that will work, there will be future endeavors to keep them away from it. This is simply the first step in keeping the kids safe. Most people are selfish enough to care only about "how they're going to get their drinks" rather than how they're going to protect the youth and the future of the country. I respect your right to disagree with me and I definitely respect your husband being in the Air Force, as my family is an air force family. I am not from Utah either and I find that this state can be crazy as well. However, you need to remember that there are many mormons in this state and the state's job is to cater to the needs of the people. If most of the population is Mormon, it is not unlikely that things similar to LDS teachings would be present in the legislation. To those who are not Mormon, I understand your situation, but there are still ways around these annoyances. You can still get drinks at other places, there is always going to be a surplus of alcohol, even in UT.
Re: .bommie – agreed.
As a Utahn, I'm quite sick of the silly liquor laws. I don't drink, but all the laws impair our business and ability to grow since many large corporations don't want to deal with the restrictions.
This just makes yourself look worse, as now you seem like you want to start a fight/rumor about Miley. Honestly, it's weird that you're so jealous.
yeah, i live here. they claim seeing the appealing packaging attracts small childern, making them more curious at a younger age. i agree that there is barely a seperation between church and state and for those who dont take to that faith, its a struggle. does anywhere else require a membership before you go to a bar? not just a license but a MEMBERSHIP??? wtf….canada, here i come!
Yet again the government trying to control what we do.
Doing what it thinks is best for us…. What a fucking joke.
