      MELBOURNE — Brevard Community College is on lockdown following reports of an explosion. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad arrived to the Melbourne campus just before 11 a.m. Thursday.

      There were no reports of fire in the area, but witnesses reported the smell of sulfur and the sound of an explosion in or near an elevator in the Multi-Purpose Facility (Building 7).

      When officials arrived near the building, they discovered the elevator door was wide open and appeared damaged.

      Officials recovered a glass bottle filled with gunpowder on the third floor of Building 7. The building was evacuated.

      Four students did suffer some slight smoke inhalation. The students refused treatment. Officials said there were no major injuries.

      Day and afternoon classes have been cancelled for Building 7.
