Choi Jin-sil, a South Korean actress fondly nicknamed "The Nation's Actress," was found dead Thursday of an apparent suicide. She was 40 years old.
Sad.
The actress, who made her debut in 1980 as a pretty young ingenue, had been plagued with depression since her wildly publicized divorce from baseball star Cho Sung-min. She often worried about the upbringing of their two children. Additionally, she couldn't escape harsh internet rumors regarding her financial situation.
A month ago, Choi was scandalized when actor Ahn Jae-hwan, to whom she had lent money, was found dead in his car of a suicide as well. Though Choi was never charged in the case, rumors flared, exacerbating her depression.
She hanged herself in her bathroom, after returning home drunk, according to reports.
No suicide note has been found, although the day before her death, she texted her makeup assistant with such ominous messages as "take care of (my) children no matter what happens." An autopsy is scheduled for later today and an investigation is in motion.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to Choi's family and friends.

For those who are curious to see her work…Check out the K-movie 'The Letter.' Hollywood recently made or maybe drew inspiration from it stars Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank "P.S. I Love You."
As a expecting mother, my heart truly sincerely goes out to her children..they're so young (5 & 7).
Not too familiar with a lot of K-culture stuff but I WAS def familiar with Choi Jin Shil…I think some people can compare her to Meg Ryan when everyone viewed her as "America's sweetheart" at the height of her career.
My favorite movie of hers was the one where Choi played a abused adopted daughter trying to find her roots…forgot the name but it was such a powerful movie. Especially when she teaches her child how to play a very popular korean folk song on the piano when she isn't familiar with the korean language herself…very moving. I saw this movie only once and that was over a decade ago…and I still haven't forgotten it. Amazing.
I hope she finds comfort and peace wherever she may be.
She will be missed.

trully sad - at 40 yrs old i would think she was equipped to handle her stresses. even sadder for her kids, as they will never know why. i will never get why people with kids do this…once you have children you no longer have just a responsibility to yourself but also the life you created, that relies on you above all others…i just hope the korean paparazzi pigs leave them alone….

It is so sad when people choose to end their lives. I understand that it can be so tough on someone that they don't see any other option, but I don't see how they can just leave their children like that. I hope her kids are going to be given the privacy they need and I wish that she hadn't been so depressed over a man. I know it's easy to get depressed from a guy, but I wish she could've come out of that. How sad.

I know she was a talented and adorable actress who divorced and won sole custody of her two sons awhile back. She even got her son's last name changed to her maiden. Does this sound like a mother who was ready to take her life? No, she fought hard, she got her life back and career just recently. I think all of those who are judging her should we don't know exactly why she was hurting and what brought her to take her own life. Thank for the story perez!

It is extremely sad. She was a lovely woman and I feel for her children. They should definitely do an autopsy, because it could have been foul play. She was a small woman and could have been killed and hung. Remember that poor actress from "Waitress"????????

You think about "how much better everyone else will be w/out me, how much of a fuck up you've been (even if that's not even true)", and you truely believe this. And it hurts sooo bad inside just feeling this way every day.

And second, I have a mother who attempted suicide when I was 16. If it weren't for my father finding her she would have died. She has severe depression and anxiety and is on disability. She told me she wants to kill herself all the time, and it really upsets me. However, I don't think it's selfish and I don't hate her for the way she feels. People who say suicide is selfish need to realize that it's a mentally and physically disabling disease that CANNOT be controlled. Please take that into consideration. Just because was wealthy doesn't mean she doesn't deserve to be depressed. People with depression cannot control themselves and negative things affect them with 100x more emotional intensity than a normally functioning person.

She fought depression for many years after a violent relationship and messy divorce with her ex-husband. The rumors following Ahn Jae Hwan's death pushed her over the edge. These people are litterally so misrable they think the world would be better off without them. It is a serious disease and when it is not treated it can lead to suicide. Those who take their own lives are not selfish. You will never be able to understand what is going on in their mind. My brother died in May of this year the same way. I miss him everyday and will continue to do so, but I realize that it was too hard to continue to live life for others. Depression is a horrible thing and I suggest if you're dealing with it to get help as soon as possible…don't wait. God bless this woman's children and the rest of her family.
