Hindu Scholars Want Natalie Portman To Apologize For Music Video With Ex

We're sure Natalie Portman is pleased to hear from leading American Hindus regarding her music video with ex-boyfriend Devendra Banhart.

Hindu scholars are calling for an apology from Portman for her portrayal of an Indian princess in Banhart's video for Carmensita.

We're calling for an apology for Banhart's peen pics (NSFW - duh)!

Indo-American statesman and devout Hindu, Rajan Zed, said he was hurt by the video. He said that too often revered Hindu imagery is used too lightly in pop culture, contributing to discouraging stereotypes.

His voice joins those of officials at the Hindu Alliance of India, Shri Ramayan Pracharini Sabha, India Heritage Panel, who would also like Nat to "distance herself from the Banhart video."

We're sure she'd be all too happy to.

We don't know - we thought the video was a cute homage to the Bollywood aestehtic.

I am an Indian so I feel comfortable saying this, but I think every once in a while we need to pull our collective panties out of our arseholes. People need better things to complain about and dedicate their times to.

    People are too uptight. =P

  10. 10

Well, the song's not great, but I thought the video was pretty cute. If the video hurts Mr. Zed's feelings, he shouldn't watch it. We believe in freedom of expression over here!

  11. 11

I cant even watch that. how brutal.

  12. 12

Its cute but I could see how it could be seen as offensive to their culture. With the guy with all the arms and the painted faces. It can come off mocking their culture.

people this days get offended by anything! don't watch the video n problem solved you won't get hurt!!

The video is pretty cool and nicely done, plus I think Devendra is a great musician.

Why should she have to apologize when the entire video is a cliche portrayal of the culture? They didn't do anything offensive or prejudiced against them.

she should apologize for being with that ugly mother fucker

  33. 33

WTF??? Why are the picking on poor Natalie?? Why aren't they asking for an apology from the Devendra, who's video it ACTUALLY is (and who happens to be of the culture). This is just stupid…. why go after the actress playing a role, when it really should be the musical artist and director who are responsible for this. LEAVE BRITNEY…. ERRR NATALIE ALONE!!!! lol

pretty sure natalie portman did whatever they told her to do AND she did it for free/for charity, so those lame protesters can FUCK OFF! aparently they don't understand that in AMERICA we have freedom of speech and expression and they can't tell natalie she did anything wrong!!

  41. 41

I work in Desi Radio. A few years back Fashion Cares in Toronto (I know ya love us here Perez - and we love ya right back) The theme was Bollywood - How cool is that eh? The PERFECT homoerotic aesthetic! Beautiful boys, flowing locks - the whole shebang.
Well turns out no quite so groovy. They created decks of playing cards with the images of Hindu Gods and Goddesses on the front, which were given at the door as a cool promo. End result - images of sacred Gods were strewn about, trampled on … you get the picture.
All of that happened because the organizers thought the sacred images were cool and kitschy. Chalk it our to good ol colonial superiority and ignorance.
They could have used cool images of Bollywood stars and brought those images to a new audience. Instead the people at Faison Cares had a mountain of PR to climb - people protested - Fashion Cares eventually said sorry.
    Same deal here

  42. 42

Re: auds – Was the video made in America? Heck, is she even American? I can't remember…

  43. 43

"Hurt by the video" ??? Shut the fuck up! People's fragile little feelings get hurt every day. Get over it asshole.

  44. 44

This video & song = YITES

  45. 45

i think that videos too cute.

  46. 46

I dont think she should apologies for acting in a video. The band should make an apology for a horrible song and video

  47. 47

    aww
    i liked this video
it was adorable and i really liked the song
people are wayy tooo sensitive these days
    it wasn't meant to offend

  48. 48

Fuckin Babies! Boo Hoo! Nuthin wrong with that video, I dont think any less of the Hindu religion or Natalie Portman because of a friggen video

  49. 49

Natalie is an actress. Actresses do all kinds of roles and in this video she played an Indian Princess. I don't see why she has to apologize for taking a role she liked. There are MUCH worse videos. At least she wasn't being a slut!

  50. 50

I think they were pulling maybe from the Bhagavad Vita, stories from the Hindu Holy Book. It's sort of like having someone like Justin Timberlake pretend he is Christ in a video and casting his girlfriend as Mary Magdalene. I think maybe they thought it would be homage, but rather pulled from the wrong sources.

  51. 51

oh what a load of rubbish!.. please the aesterics of the video, the whole thing looks just like a whole bunch of indian music vids

  52. 52

    Oh, yawn.

  53. 53

I think its HARMESS FUN!!! They're ridiculous

  54. 54

i absolutley love this song, video and whole concept…get over it! Of all the shit to complain about in the world, don't complain about a great song and colorful video…I'm sure Krishna wouldn't mind

  55. 55

For all these people who say "711" and other comments of that nature obviously show a lack of respect for our culture. If people threw out stereotypes of YOUR culture, there'd be all outrage on this thing. And honestly, the video is not THAT cute. Some of it was kind of funny but if there was a cross and Jesus being portrayed by, let's say, a jewish singer or something and "having fun" by making fun, many people in our nation wouldn't be laughing.

  56. 56

oh please. leave her alone. natalie has nothing to apologize for.

  58. 58

Oh get the fuck over it. We don't live in India over here. This is America and we will do what the fuck we want and we won't apologize for it. If you don't like it, change the channel. Fucking idiot.

  59. 59

I really liked it P. It needs to be taken in the spirit of light-heartedness that it was intended to be. Besides, it was a real treat for fans to see her cut up like that! Rather than see it as a representation of their culture they chose to see it as a condemnation of it.

  60. 60

I don't know if Natalie owes him an apology but I can understand if he feels offended. If Indians made a movie with Jesus tossing out Christmas gifts it would offend some. Some of the gestures have a deep religious meaning to them and they take it seriously. I just think there needs to be more dialogue, some respect and understanding of all people around globe.

Just cause it makes you laugh doesn't mean it will make everyone.

  61. 61

    WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!!!!!!!!

  62. 62

it is totally racist and pretentious - and the ending is disgusting. he seriously sees himself as these manifestations of an enlightened being, he's so gross. you know they both smell bad. the throbbing egos of these 2 raging egomaniacs make a vile & repulsive combination, and in their smugness & self-absorption they are taking serious things way too lightly. it is very disrespectful to hindu's. on a personal level she could do so much better, but now she's tainted with his disgustingness..

  63. 63

Oh please…. don't watch it if you don't like it…. no one owes him an apology… All sorts of religions and cultures are made fun of, sometimes in a cutesy not offensive intended sort of way, and sometime in an outright mean hate filled way…
Either way, it is their right to do so…get off your high horse buddy…

And why is he singing in Spanish?????

Looks like every Bollywood vid I've ever seen. This guy is a douche.

And it's not like she's basing her career on some d-list Bollywood-esque vid she did for her ex-boyfriend. These Hindu guys need to open their eyes and understand that this was just a favour for her ex, and light hearted.

  72. eN says – reply to this

    72

The video is really bad. Her ex is super ugly. I don't even call it music. It's pretty much trash. This is nothing like Bollywood. Not even a parody or close to "entertainment." If you want a "cute homage to the Bollywood aestethic," look at Snoop Dogg's video.
