The Lights Are Out

Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray is finally coming to an end on Broadway.

The hit show is expected to close in mid-January 2009.

Before its end, though, they'll be welcoming back a familiar face, Harvey Fierstein, who won a 2003 Tony Award as Best Actor in a Musical for playing Edna Turnbald.

Fierstein will be returning to the Neil Simon Theatre between November and mid-January to help end the show with a bang.

Some are guessing (hoping) that Fierstein's return and the announcement of the show closing might gather enough buzz and ticket sales to keep the musical running for a bit longer.

The show got some extra publicity as well when the 2007 release of the movie version came out, featuring hottie Zac Efron.

This August marked Harispray's sixth anniversary on Broadway.

We're kind of sad to hear it's leaving.

What did U think of the musical?

  13. 13

Please move on to someone else for the hotness factor. Maybe someone older.

I don't know about the stage show, but the movie definetely sucked. Its no comparison to the classic, John Waters version. Honestly, there was nothing charming or smart about it. The John Waters version had a cool, funny, underlying sense of raunch that was so subtle and smart. I'm sure with Harvey Feirstein, who originated the role, it might be worth seeing.

  18. 18

NO! It can't close! I haven't seen it yet. : ( And I don't fly out to New York till March! JUST TWO MONTHS MORE GOD DAMNIT!

  19. 19

    He's trying to grow a mush…. Aw…. so cute!!

  20. 20

I saw it in April 2003 with the original cast and it was awesome!! It literally makes you leave the theatre singing. I'm sad it's closing. GO SEE IT!!

  21. 21

I loveeeedd the Broadway show, I saw it in July 2004 (or was it 2003?) with Harvey Fierstein and it was absolutely AMAZING! He is hysterical as Edna and I am extremely sad that it's ending! :(

  22. 22

I think making these Broadway shows into movies is ruining them. They lose their novelty.

  23. 23

oh no - that's sad. I just saw the show earlier this year and loved it! It was a packed house.

I better get tickets to go see it soon again before it goes.

  24. 24

If he just had a little sprig of hair standing up in the back, he would look just like alfalfa from our gang!

  25. 25

The Broadway show was fantastic. Ashley Parker Angel was HAWT! It was much better than the movie and actually you'd be surprised at the stage presentation. See it if you can.

  26. 26

It's that skanks Aubrey O'Days fault! That little whore is bad luck. She should stay away from people.

  27. 27

loved the show; harvey fierstein?! amazinggg. hated the movie. i think the main reason it's lost ticket sales because of the fact that it was made into a movie, people aren't interested into going to see it cause they think they've already "seen it." same goes with RENT- now that one's off-broadway unfortunately too. i love how they make shows into movies, but not while they're STILL on broadway. wait till they close. what a shame…

  28. 28

    Loved Harvey Firestein in Harspray

  29. 29

I loved the musical! I thought the original non-musical movie was awesome as well. Comparing the two is comparing apples and oranges. It's like comparing the musical Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory w/ Gene Wilder to the non-musical Charlie & the Chocolate Factory w/ Johnny Depp. Same story told 2 different ways.
I have to say though, that I prefer John Travolta singing as Edna over Fierstein making those noises to music. Harvey's a good actor and a wonderful role model, but honestly, he is no singer and should never be allowed to do it in front of people anymore. Really, love the guy, hate the voice. Travolta was great in the film, it's always a pleasure to watch him sing and dance.

  30. 30

Awww. :( First RENT now Hairspray. How sad.

  31. 31

The original movie was MUCH better than the musical

I've seen the original movie, the Broadway musical, and the musical movie–the Broadway musical is my favorite, by far.
