CARA is operated mainly by volunteers & a few part-time employees. The expenses for our programs & services are supported by private donations from individuals, businesses, & fund raising events throughout the year. We receive no funds from the city, county, state or federal government.
The primary goal of CARA is the placement of our adoptable animals into loving, caring homes; thereby enhancing the bond between animals & people. Our services are designed to promote responsible pet ownership. By education, communities can learn the benefits of proper care & treatment of all pets & why spay/neuter is important."

I think they should start a "african-american child rescue" that provides care and food for abused,unwanted or neglected kids…..and yes they should spay and neuter "baby daddys" and "baby mommas"..
Ok, just to let YOU and EVERYONE else know….there is NO SUCH THING AS A "NO KILL" shelter. I've worked at shelters since i was 19.
They can have the "name" because they take the animals off site to euthanize.
And the animals go cage crazy its incredibly inhumane to force an animal to live in a cage just because of your warped morals.
people that say help people over animals are fools - you can do BOTH - animals deserve people to help protect them too.

the Animal Refuge Center in North Fort Myers, FL is also an indepently funded no-kill shelter that can use all the help they can get. great organization, google animal refuge center. and in response to "da lilz"'s comment, there are, in fact, independently run no kill shelters. unfortunately, as a result of their no-kill policy, most stay at maximum capacity, often unable to take in any more animals, but they do not ever euthanize animals unless they have a terminal illness that is advanced enough that they are in a great deal of suffering. ARC in NFM even has a (very spacious) separate housing area for FIV cats, where they roam free and are cared for until they are adopted unless the animal is so sick that they are in a great deal of suffering. I'm assuming the shelters you worked for were government run, which due to very limited budgets and high population unfortunately are unable to operate any other way than to euthanize.
On a recent Kabbalah pilgrimage to China I was introduced to the joys of puppy meat - it tastes really delicious as well as being soft and tender. Everyone should try dog and see how wonderful it is. This animal shelter or whatever you call it should consider becoming an abbatoir to sell the public tasty treats. My favourite is poodle - they taste real good!!

Thanks for posting that! That was always my dream - to run a no kill shelter. But i got sick and then disabled (i know, you are all crying for me. s'OK), so i "only" have a small place and we care for eight! I love people who do this!!

Perez - Check out an amazing organization named nsala - www.nsalaamerica.org. They are a no-kill shelter that also runs an animal hospital to rehab sick animals.
