Ohio woman, 90, attempts suicide after foreclosure

A 90-year-old Ohio woman, facing eviction from the home she has lived in for 38 years, shot and wounded herself this week, becoming a grim symbol of the U.S. home mortgage crisis.

Addie Polk was found lying on the floor of her home with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to her shoulder when police came to the home on Wednesday to serve an eviction notice, Akron police spokesman Lt. Rick Edwards said on Friday.

Polk survived the shooting and is being treated in a hospital.

It was the latest attempt by sheriff's deputies to evict Polk from her modest single-family home because she could not keep up with her mortgage.

"It appears they're evicting her over her mortgage. She's lived in the house, the neighbors said, something like 38 years and in the last couple of years fell prey to some predatory lending company or financial institution," Edwards said.

Local news reports said deputies had tried to serve Polk's eviction notice more than 30 times before Wednesday's shooting.

Home foreclosure rates are at record highs in the United States, in many cases because buyers with adjustable interest rates could not keep up with sharp increases in monthly payments. The foreclosure crisis has sparked a wider housing market downturn and is at the heart of the U.S. financial crisis.

    hey perez,

why don't you do something good with the $87,000 you got from Ronson and buy this woman's house. you don't have to deed it to her, but at least let her live there rent-free until she dies.

  6. 6

THIS deserves a "worthy cause" post waaaay more than half the crap you post under that heading…

  7. 7

I know I agree with shante…that is sad.

    Re: eat me,drink me

Thanks for the update. I hadn't heard this.

  13. 13

Re: eat me,drink me – it's not really well considering she still shot herself.

  14. 14

I read this and expect to hear of many more. Truly sad! It will be epidemic soon.

  15. 15

I read THIS in a dutch NEWSPAPER… Fannie Mae seems to have acquited the LOAN… Well, how many SUICIDES will follow now?

  16. 16

I hope the govt will bail this woman out like they bail out the greedy CEOs/companies who are screwing people like this!!! I hope someone helps her out and SUES the shady lending co…I feel so badly for her!! THIS ISN"T RIGHT!!!!

I feel so badly for this woman. It's horrendous what some so-called 'financial institutions' will go to.
I DO have to wonder why her home wasn't paid off, though. I mean…she has lived in a single family home for 38 years (in Ohio, which does not hold the highest mortgage rates). To be fair, this home should have been paid off years ago.
What this country needs are laws that prohibit more than one home refinancing. If you don't learn your lesson, after having to refinance the first time,…you're on your own.

I think she actually heard that Palin could be President.

  24. 24

    Sad stuff

  25. 25

    Re: Anonymous

It was paid off, she took out a loan against it four years ago, at the age of 86 on a thirty year loan.

Yeah cuz that makes perfect sense to give a 86 year old woman a 30 year loan.

  26. 26

    blame the government.
    thanks.

Thanks Bush. We all appreciate the shitty job you've done.

    *
I GREATLY appreciate your comment. I didn't know that she had taken out another loan.
Sometimes, I think that all of these financial institutions are playing their own version of 'Monopoly'. They don't 'see' the HUMAN FACTOR (the people and their families) applying for the loans, nor their ages….they just see the property that will become theirs, eventually.
It makes me sick and disgusted.

  29. 29

What I find saddest is not that she felt so at wits end that she had no other option, but rather that she had to shoot herself to get out of her mortgage. Since it worked in this case I'm seeing other people trying it.

  30. 30

Maybe she just heard that squirrel tastes good and is low in fat?

  31. maryc says – reply to this

    31

The banks decided to allow shoddy, shady underwriting for loans. This lady should have been offered a "reverse" mortgage–monthly payments to the owner until the home is sold and then the loan is paid off. Instead some shady loan officer or mortgage broker sold her the WRONG loan so that they got a bigger commission. These people are worse than used car salesmen.

This whole industry was deregulated by McCain and Friends (Phil Gramm and Alan Greenspam). Do not let them stay in power.
Vote Obama/Biden and your Dem for Congress and State Offices. Get rid of those who have enabled the crooks.

  32. 32

Well, if she couldn't afford the mortgage, she couldn't afford a nursing home. Where was she to go? When are we, the wealthiest country in the world, going to begin to take care of our aged and our sick?

Re: fuckyouperez – Let me guess…you are gay, with absolutely NO regard for the well-being of others. You see a photo of a woman in a tree, read that they shot themselves…and took it upon yourself to make a comment about squirrels. Classy, real classy. You do your 'pseudo-gender/sexual preference' proud, I'm sure. But, to THIS hetero…you are pathetic.

  34. 34

aww that's sad! have you noticed that like 90% of your "headlines of the weak" have to do with people from ohio? haha! i swear ohio's not all crazy! we're actually pretty normal here!

  35. 35

So a 90 year old lady shot herself in her shoulder and just happened to be laying there STILL ALIVE, when the police just happened to show up to serve an eviction notice???? This bitch is super lucky or maybe even super human, fo shizzle!!

  36. 36

Poor lady. When you're desperate, you'll do almost anything. Let's get these RePubs out of office so that this recession won't turn into a depression and have more people like her trying to kill themselves.

    Aww, that's horrid

  39. 39

    Re: Anonymous

Actually, I'm not gay. Maybe a little metro. But all my parts go together only boy-girl, thanks. On the other hand…. Have you taken a good look at that picture? Even if the photographer is flat on his back, that woman in up in the tree a ways. And not on little spindly branches either. How exactly does a 90 year old get up in a tree that far? I suppose it could happen without her falling and breaking all the bones in her body. Then she shoots herself and lives? I dunno, the two together almost start to sound like an urban legend. Squirrel does taste good though. :)

Besides, granny in the picture is Chinese, dressed in traditional Chinese countryside garb for a farming family. You people can't take a fucking squirrel joke? This picture has nothing to do with the Ohio woman. Rubes.

  43. 43

    ———————————————————————————
You just keep your head buried in the sand. You don't seem to have a clue that there are thousands and thousands of widows and families just like her, and the only reason Fannie Mae stopped the foreclosure (after they took her money for 40 years and sent sheriffs in to evict her), is because this case got media attention.
    .
I don't know how you can say "all is well" after the trauma this woman has suffered. She is elderly and alone; and that is how Americans take care of their elderly? Shame on you. Americans are the most selfish, uncaring people on the planet.

DavidB73 [29] says: "…she had to shoot herself to get out of her mortgage…"
    —————————————————–
This woman did not shoot herself to get out of her mortgage. She is a senile old woman who was terrified that she would be put on the street, and she didn't know what to do, because the sheriffs kept beating on her door every day. She was in distress 24/7 over not knowing what would happen to her. She was looking for an escape from being terrified. That kind of distress is unbearable for the middle aged; it is much more intense in the elderly.
    —————————————————–
Thank you to the person who brought her case to media attention.
    I heart you.

Moron. This picture is not a photo of the woman in the article. It is a lame attempt to make fun of the woman in the article. I don't understand how anyone with even half a brain, such as Perez, could exploit this woman just to get a laugh.

Nordic Blonde [55] says: This bitch only has a few years left in her anyway, so why not wait? Obviously she didn't manage her money well, so boo-hoo.
    ——————————————————————-
Hello heartless bitch. I'm willing to bet that you only have a few years left in you too. This woman was elderly and widowed. The fact that you would blast her off like you have, puts you right down there at the very bottom of the bucket where all the slime is.

  61. 61

The whole banking thing and the war was just a conspiracy. It was for the rich to get richer and to also be able to buy up all the houses and businesses that the people lost for merely nothing.
The first George Bush ruined Ohio. Our mother grew up there and Bush Sr. sold all of the great jobs out to Texas, where the Mexican's could work for nothing. That place has been ruined since the 80's. We are going to see alot more of this and more robberies. People don't even have money to eat anymore. Nice thing our President did to us, too bad his kids don't have to suffer like the rest of us.

  62. 62

I think this is so crazy. Look where America is at right now!! And recently, the crazy $700 Billion Bailout was approved to help the financial institutions… so instead of going bankrupt, they are still going to try and screw people over. Did you know, the $700 Billion is equal to giving (or taxing) every American $7-10 grand. Personally, if they gave THAT to the people… I would pay off all my debt. The adjustable rates are crazy… finding a decent job is hard… I can hardly afford college… Do you know how long its been since Ive had a full tank of gas in my car or a full fridge/cabinet of food? And Im just trying to do good in college and survive on my own. LOL. Hard times. Im sure a lot of people are going through depression right now.

  63. 63

i dont get it she has lived in the house for over 37 yrs and her mortage isn't paid off???
don't people have to put a % down to being with and arent mortages 30 yrs at most??
this country is going to hell, and there should be no bailout, some giants need to fall to learn ther lessons, it's all part of survival of the fittest

  64. 64

to al the people that lost their homes, you have no one to blame but yourselfs and greed, i mean if someone makes say 40 grand and they buy a house for 250 with no money down, then when the maket starts to get slow their house is worth now like 150, so they decide they cant or want to make payments, and they come to this decision without much to lose why? because the greedy banks in their thirst for more wealth didnt make the suckers put any money down, so they aint got nothing to lose, oh and btw a person that makes 40 grand can afford at most a 70 thoughsand $ house, and thats cutting it close greed alive and well in america at both ends

  65. 65

    That's SO sad!

  66. 66

    thats scary sad..

  67. 67

The early stages of evolution are never pretty,The New World Order has begun.

  68. 68

It is not just Wall Street or Fannie Mae. It is borrowers and mortgage brokers too. It seems impossible to imagine that a 90 year old woman on a fixed income could even qualify for a loan that would be so high it could force her out of her home. This was her mortgage broker……….probably committing fraud with a "stated income" loan. Be careful frineds, because predatory lending starts with your neighbrohood lenders.

  69. 69

She's 90 for god's sake - why can't they just take the house when she dies?? So mean to do that to an old woman.

  70. 70

That is so sad! It's one thing to do it to someone who can afford to move or at least be able to do something in those circumstances. I'm sure she's on a fixed income. I wonder why it's been 38 years and it's not paid off though? Aren't there things like reverse mortgages? Seems like she would have some equity, unless there are multiple mortgages on her house.

  71. 71

#1- NorDick Blonde is just trying to get attention… just ignore "it."
#2- If you had all read the preceding comments, you would've seen that her house was paid off, but she took out a loan against it four years ago (at the age of 86) on a thirty year loan. Yeah… THIRTY YEARS + 86= Predatory Lender!

  72. 72

    Re: uraPIGperez

    73

This is so sad. Where is her family? isn't someone looking out for Grandma? She needs a reverse mortgage. It will allow her to live in the house until she dies and then the bank owns it. The bank is going to own it no matter what at this point…someone needs to help this poor woman out.

  74. 74

Re: uraPIGperez – Yeah, I'm really going to lose sleep over your comment. Why should I give a fuck about some dumbass old fuck who got in over her head? That's her fault, no?
