More Home Makeover Messiness

holmes.jpg

Could doing good cause a negative affect?

Yet another house built by ABC's Extreme Make over: Home Edition is in jeopardy of being foreclosed on.

This is the third house in the last few months that is facing financial problems, the others are in Atlanta and South Jersey.

A 7,000 sq ft home was built in Seminole County, Florida, back in 2006 for Sadie Holmes. The upgrade left the community activist Holmes with a beautiful six-bedroom home.

Holmes is a former drug addict who - after turning her life - around began a charity to distribute food, clothes and furniture to needy neighbors.

But Holmes says she's now struggling. The amount of debt she has built up might cost her her $400,000 house, which she also uses for her charity.

Holmes says, "I'm grateful for this building, but it's causing me too much stress and too much problems."

It seems Seminole County has filed liens against the property for unpaid code violations that total almost $30,000.

Holmes says, ”This is not the Taj Mahal. This is a run-down community. The way the economy is now, we're getting three times the amount of calls for help.”

Back in 2007, a county code-enforcement officer began filing violation reports against the property.

The reports cited portable restrooms, abandoned vehicles, an oversized truck, and overgrown grass as violations.

Though after being cited, Holmes moved the 3 ton truck and other vehicles to a storage warehouse and cleaned up the mess.

As of today, Holmes has addressed all her violations but hasn't paid the fines.

What do U think? Should she be fined all that money if she complied and cleaned up the property?

    Lovin' the America right now.

  2. 2

I think she should give the house to me.

Some people abuse the gifts they're given.

But…….i'd better move the decrepit bus from my front yard…I dint know that was a violation!

  3. 3

She SHOULD pay up. She was given a great opportunity and she let it go to shit!!! They should take it away from her and give it to someone who won't skank it up and REALLY deserves it!!!

  4. 4

EHM ruins these people by throwing off property values for the area, and sticking them with the new value property tax. If they kept the houses in check, something realistic, rather than a 7,000 square foot home for a former drug addict, it would be doing some good.

They need to think about the home refurbs like they do on DIY or HGTV.
These people, with nothing, cant afford to keep up with the taxes or maintaining the property.

    ENOUGH WITH THE EXCESS, EHM~

  5. 5

no. she shouldn't and extreme makeover should help her out.

  6. 6

I thought they paid these houses off for them. Or am I reading it wrong?

  7. 7

    *********** 5th !!!! ******************

  8. 8

absolutely not ! this is just ridiculous……. can't oprah or gayle pay her fucking shit off so she can continue to do her charity work? WTFFFFFFFF

  9. 9

i had a pretty mean speed habit back in the day, were's my fuckin house?

  10. 10

Who the fuck leaves portable toilets and and abandoned vehicles and all that shit laying around like that?

    These people are idiots.

  11. 11

    first

  12. 12

Why don't the idiots at ABC make sure that these people can AFFORD to live in these houses once production is done?

  13. 13

    Re: Steve Drill – Rednecks!!!!

  14. 14

At the beginning, Perez makes it sound like it's Extreme Makeover's doing. It's not the show's fault she had abandoned cars and port-a-potties on her land, besides not mowing the lawn.

  15. 15

what I know is that "Extreme Make over: Home Edition" is one of my favorite shows in TV.These guys are doing an excellent job.

  16. 16

    She cleaned up the mess.
People just want to get money from her since she got a house for free.
Regardless of the charity work she does, how sad to punish someone that is working to help others…So sad…

  17. 17

That looks like the house my prostitute mother went to when I was 13. She let me watch for the first time and learn how men
are. After that, I just started killing all the cocksuckers I could
    trick into my house.

  18. 18

I think she blew it. Someone should of schooled her on the gift. She blew it business wise as well as personally!

  19. 19

Yeah, they pay the houses off for them. However, like many people who are given something for nothing, many of these "lucky" people then take mortgages out on the home and never pay it back. OR they don't bother keeping up the property.
I deal with code violations all the time. The violations stated here are nothing more than the owner's FAILURE TO KEEP THE PROPERTY CLEAN. This is not the fault of anyone except the former drug addict who obviously didn't bother appreciating the house she was given. Overgrown grass and junked vehicles are a lack of FREE maintenance.. doesn't cost her a thing. It wasn't until she kept refusing to clean the property that she was cited with fines. When she finally cleaned it up, IT WAS TOO LATE. Shoulve been done BEFORE the fines were issued.
So ITS HER OWN FAULT FOR LOSING THIS HOUSE.

I agree though.. although it doesnt apply to THIS situation, I do find it odd that they give these people houses that incur property taxes that are sure to more than the homeowner can afford. But this is not the case here.

  20. 20

How is it EHM's fault she broke laws and received citations and fines? It clearly says she built up the debt; the house didn't make her go into debt.

  21. 21

Re: GurlStar – Working hard to help others doesn't excuse you from being a pig and leaving the FREE house you were given in a dirty eyesore mess.

  22. 22

well obviously if she needed ABC to build her a house, she couldn't afford to do it herself. how is she supposed to afford to pay all those fines?

  23. 23

THIS SHIT IS FUCKED! THE PEOPLE WHO GET THE HOUSES ARE FUCKED! PEOPLE WHO WORK HARD AND DO THEIR BEST TO BE PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF SOCIETY SHOUD BE GETING THESE HOUSES! NOT FORMER DRUG ADDICTS AND PEOPLE WITH TWENTY KIDS CAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW THE MEANING OF BIRTH CONTROL!

  24. 24

WOW - you would think they would cut her a break because of all the good she does for the community??!!!

  25. 25

Not trying to be a bitch…they deserve this misery. They asked for it…greedy fucks! Maybe they'll learn a lesson…both parties: ABC and the families.
Big beautiful 7,000 sq ft house shouldn't go to a crack skank

  26. 26

    fucknuts!

  27. 27

Hey! I moved from South Jersey to Atlanta…Coincedence? I THINK NOT…..

  28. 28

    DUMBASS!

  29. 29

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Although the show offers people a fresh start with a new house, it is up the person/family to continue the make-over into their own lives. If you can't do that, they you don't deserve the house.

    30

You can take the person out of the "hood" but you can take the "hood" out of the person…

  31. MP says – reply to this

    31

She should pay her fines like an adult and move on with it. If she took care of the place she wouldn't have gotten any fines to begin with. Would YOU want to live near a house w/ overgrown grass and a portapotty out your front window?

  32. 32

I come from a family of Code Enforcement officers. The thing is, the homeowner DOES NOT GET FINED right off of the bat. They are issued a citation to make good of the violations. If after so many warnings, it goes to court. This woman was obviously IGNORING multiple citations and not attending her hearings………………..That is when you are slapped with fines. It's her fault, and only her fault.

  33. 33

    This is crazy…
So many people are way over the heads. This is pitiful.
I wonder if ABC will actually follow up on these stories because they need to.

  34. 34

no excuse for having a junky yard

  35. 35

no, they should give a time limit to comply and then if nothing is done, fine away… greedy asses

  36. wedon says – reply to this

    36

This is a clear cut case of TNB!

  37. 37

She turned a beautiful home into a dumping yard. Why didn't she maintain it? If she knew she couldn't at least keep it clean, then she should never have accepted the make-over offer. F her and her pigsty ways. PAY UP!
    xoxo, Isa

  38. 38

Re: bluestars – Chances are she took out a loan with the equity in her house and that screwed her over. People should know that ARM loans are the devil. Fat cat lenders should have not even prayed on these people.

  39. 39

well one of the major complaints I have of Home Edition is that they build McMansions and it just doesn't even consider the layout of the neighborhood or even city codes or zoning.

  40. 40

People of a "certain age" who have nothing have nothing for a reason. They've made bad decisions all their lives — giving them a big, free house isn't going to remedy their lack of decision-making ability.

  41. 41

I wonder how many warnings and how long did they give her before they finally started to attach fines to the property……….How long did it take to rack up $30,000 in fines?

It's not the show's fault that she didn't keep her yard clean.

I can't think of one reason why she shouldn't be held responsible for her actions.

  42. 42

    Re: sourdoggie
They don't have a choice but to observe 'city codes and zoning'
They have to obtain permits from the city just like every other builder. Why would their builder be any different?

  43. 43

well. seminole county florida is filled with a bunch of "redneck" republican bitches.
    so..

  44. KayJ says – reply to this

    44

    BUMMMMER

  45. 45

where is this house in seminole county? lol i live there and they are prolly citing her for no reason, cuz nothing happens in seminole county. i mean how badly does grass have to be overgrown to get cited?

  46. 46

Re: jackiek3rr – what seminole county do you live in?

  47. 47

I think I would want more information before I make a decision. Like why she took so long to respond to the violations, and if she has a job outside of doing the charity work. I do still think that it is pretty crappy that she has to pay so much, but I don't know if I would let her off scott free until I know more about it.

  48. assie says – reply to this

    48

Boo hoo. Is she some sort of trash herself, w/ trash all over her lawn gross. Don't blame EMH they did her a favor, and she blew it.

  49. 49

u can take the girl out of the ghetto, but u can't take the ghetto out of the gurl

  50. auds says – reply to this

    50

Such bullshit! If she cleaned it up, who cares? Why should she be forced to keep everything spick and span anyway? It's her yard!

  51. Anonymous says – reply to this

    51

The code violations have NOTHING to do with the show or the house they built for her. They have to do with stupid ghetto Shanequa not complying with the law. imagine that.

  52. Anonymous says – reply to this

    52

I just can't feel sorry for anyone who has been given home renovations…FOR FREE.
Anyone, with any sense, realizes that home inspections (which CAN result in citations, for violations), a higher home-owners tax and higher utility bills are par for the course.
Usually, there IS a warning to clean up/discard the violations, before the fine is imposed (it is usually 30 or 60 days). If she didn't comply with the violations BEFORE the deadline…then she is liable to pay the fine. Why should she be given immunity, when it's the same rule for everyone??

  53. 53

You give these people taj mahals; however, they don't have the means nor know how to maintain them. Sell the house and pocket the equity

  54. 54

Shame on these home owners for letting their gift go to shit. Most of us would give anything to be able to have what these people are given and never be "GOOD" enough to get it. So they should cherish and pay it forward, get jobs, and pay the bills they have.

  55. 55

She should NOT have to pay the fines. Those are over zealous laws of upscale neighborhood associations. She's trying to run a charity not keep up with the Jones'. The neighbors want her to leave their neighborhood.

  56. 56

She should pay up. Sure, she's doing a good thing, but that doesn't place her above the law. However, it's not entirely her fault, I suppose. The home makeover people should claim a bit of responsibility.

  57. 57

Re: blsdjan – Her fines have to do with the CITY and it's GOVERNMENT she lives in, not some neighborhood association! My husband deals with this on a daily basis, and he works in a really bad ghetto area. Procedure is 1)Issue a warning to get whatever done. 2)Owner has X amount of weeks to make good on issue 3)If owner does not make good, a citation-fine is issued 4)Court date is set 5)Ruling set ————————-At the point of a fine, you are done. You HAVE TO PAY IT EVEN IF YOU REMEDY THE PROBLEM. So from all those points, the owner has over a month to fix the damn problem! To rack up THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF FINES means this lazy bitch turned her back on any RESPONSIBILITIES she had to maintain the property and had total non-respect for the law. Stupid bitch had a house, furnishings and money handed to her for FREE. ————–People like her will never change. I seen it happen right next door to me when a church refurbished and refurnished their house. A month later, it went right back to the shithole they made it once more. I have no sympathy for people who are handed a golden ticket and rip it to shreds.

  58. 58

YES!!! She would have been given plenty of opportunity to clean it up before the citations were issued. Code enforcement gives you like 2 or 3 warnings before citing you. It is her own stupid. lazy fault. Pay up.

  59. 59

I DONT THINK SHE SHOULD HAVE TO PAY SINCE SHE CLEANED IT UP. I REMEMBER THIS EPISODE AND WAS VERY HAPPY FOR HER. ABC NEEDS TO STEP IN AND HELP HER SO SHE CAN CONINUE TO DO GOOD IN HER NEIGHBORHOOD.

  60. 60

I don't think she should have to pay those fines.
The company that built it should.
