Pirates wouldn't be Pirates without him!
The UK's Daily Mail reports that Johnny Depp is getting a cool $55.8 million upfront from Disney to come back as Captain Jack Sparrow in the next - fourth - installment of Pirates of the Carribbean.
The biggest known upfront payout to an actor was formerly the $50 million Tom Hanks was given to come back for the sequel to the Da Vinci Code.
Looks like there's a new king of Hollywood, Toms (Hanks and Cruise)!

ugh, ANOTHER sequel……Johnny is great but lets move on already. Disney is milking this pirates franchise for all they can. Atleast Johnny Depp is the kind of actor who doesn't flaunt his money and probably gives a good amount away to charities.

I would much rather see another "Pirates" movie than another sequel to Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise. Depp is one of the greatest character actors of our age! Why shouldn't he get his share of a franchise that makes trillions? Don't blame Depp for our nations problem of overspending that's the governments' fault for buying all those million dollar toilet seats.
I loooooovee me some J-Depp, I'm all for a 4th Pirates. There have been worse sequels, I like pirates, I love Mr. Depp; I see no problem here.

Absolutely! Given the fact he played his last role (completing Heath Ledger's role) FOR FREE and gave the money to Matilda, he deserves such luck. Everyone loves the King of Cool. There better be truth to the rumor he'll play Barnabus Collins in the film, Dark Shadows. It's based on the original goth soap opera back in the 1960's. Do any of y'all remember watching it? My grandma would watch it every day and "Victoria" was the vampiress Barnabus was in love w/…… Johnny Depp will be PERFECT in the role of Barnabus. The head vampire.
I'm glad The Twilight novels have shed light on the original vampire hysteria of Dark Shadows. I don't think Stephenie Meyer drew her inspiration from Dark Shadows, having read the vast differences in Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. BOTH movies will be amazing! Cannot wait!

Why on earth does Disney want to make another Pirates when the last two lacked an appealing storyline? They were both mediocre films to be honest. Not that I mind seeing Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom in the same movie again, but they should at least write an intriguing plot this time. Please Disney, make this potential movie into something worth watching.

Jesus Christ, the Pirates trilogy was wretched. A total creative disaster after the minor pleasures of the first one. (Depp saved it, cheek sucking Knightley and snoozy Bloom practically sunk it).

I think it's ridiculous that actors get paid that much while people that are busting their ass in hard jobs . Johnny Depp has said himself acting is the easiest job in the world to him. He used to be Mr. Quirky Character Indie Boy but now he's just getting rich. He feels like if he's still playing a quirky character than he will still look cool selling out, but the fact is that's laziness, the sequels sucked. He needs to look for good scripts and then get money for bringing those good projects to the screen. Another Pirates sequel is unnecessary, it just makes him and Disney look greedy is all.

$55M to Johnny Depp for POTC is a huge gamble - but $50M to Tom Hanks for a remake of a movie that sucked is insane! No one read the prequel to The DaVinci Code so there's not going to be the curiosity that drove people to see the movie despite terrible reviews. And why the jump from $20M to $50M for top salaries anyway? Guess the economy isn't suffering in Hollywood.
