Trying To Milk Paul Newman's Death

| Filed under: Media MinutePaul NewmanBusiness Blitz

Just weeks after Paul Newman's death, People has announced its plans to rush a 96-page tribute book about the legendary actor's life to shelves as soon as possible, to the tune of $12 a pop. And People is pocketing every penny.

Understandably, People is a business and like businesses, the mag likes to capitalize on trends, events, and yes, deaths.

It's just that the calculated move seems particularly cold in light of Newman's dedication to charity. Newman's Own, the late actor's philanthropic food company, has generated $250 million to aid others.

But that's business for ya!

They should donate the money to Newmans Own. So sad, that this society has to capitalize and gain financially on someone else's pain. I'm sure his family is disgusted…

I don't buy People magazine…never have and never will.
I received my Entertainment Weekly in the mail the other day (I only subscribed because my son was selling them for his school)…and the tribute to Paul Newman was absolutely wonderful, respectful and honorable. I am NOT asking anyone to subscribe to EW (I would NEVER do that)…I am just saying that it's the only magazine, paying tribute this LOVELY man, that I need.

  29. 29

Easy answer to that is don't buy the rag mag!
Don't support Lip Syncing Pop stars.
For the love of God people keep your money in your wallet

He's so adorable… rest in peace.

I understand that People always does this but they could at least give a part of the earnings to charity. I mean even a 50 cents to $1 per magazine sold would be something.

As far as Newman's Own. I've never had the popcorn but my dogs love the treats.

  32. 32

But when People does a 72 page spread of St.Angelina, paying her millions to funnel into her "charities', they can do no wrong. The double-standard on this site is blinding.

  33. 33

If People had any sense, they would donate ALL the monies generated, to a particular Paul Newman charity or distribute it to some of is favourite charities. Tisk, tisk on them. I call boycott on the book.

They should've at least make a token donation for appearance's sake.

you are one to talk about cold and money grubbing. just cause you advertise "chairities" on your site doesn't mean you aren't totally capitalizing on trends, celbrities and yes death.

  36. 36

Perez, you make dough with this site. Your advertisers are begging and paying for spots on this site. At least People is doing it as a 'tribute' not as a piece of gossip worthy of a blog mention. Shame on you.

p.s. I wonder what CBS, or CSI paid for the background. At least their not deceased.
