'There could be an Aids vaccine in four years,' says Nobel Prize winner
A French scientist awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the Aids virus has predicted there would be a 'therapeutic vaccine' for the disease within four years.
Luc Montagnier and his team discovered HIV at the French Pasteur Institute in Paris 25 years ago, and have been awarded the prestigious prize along with other scientists who worked on discovering the root of the virus.
Montagnier, 76, said a treatment could be possible in the future with a 'therapeutic' rather than preventive vaccine for which results might be published in three or four years if financial backing is forthcoming.
'I think it will be possible with a therapeutic vaccine rather than preventative vaccinations. We would give it to people who are already infected.
A therapeutic vaccine prevents disease from flourishing after it has taken hold.
The Nobel Assembly of Sweden's Karolinska Institute praised their work, saying: 'The discovery was one prerequisite for the current understanding of the biology of the disease and its antiretroviral treatment.'
The other half of the Nobel prize was awarded for the German scientist's research that 'went against current dogma' by setting forth that oncogenic human papilloma virus (HPV) caused cervical cancer, the second most common cancer among women.
HIV
'His discovery has led to characterization of the natural history of HPV infection, an understanding of mechanisms of HPV-induced carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic vaccines against HPV acquisition,' the Assembly said.
Medicine is traditionally the first of the Nobel prizes awarded each year.
The prizes for achievement in science, literature and peace were first awarded in 1901 in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel.
The economics prize is a later addition, established by the Swedish Riksbank in 1968.
The Nobel laureate for physics will be announced tomorrow, followed by the chemistry Nobel on Wednesday, literature on Thursday and the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in Oslo.

good.
they could still spread it though right?
just prevents them from getting sick.
good start to finding a cure.
Great…..now let's work on cancer.
QUICK GET SOME TO AMY WINEHOUSE NOW!
dats good now i want to see improvement
Re: mama of 2 – I THINK THERE IS ALREADY A CURE! BUT THERE WOULD BE TOO MUCH MONEY LOST AND THEY NOT REALLY CONCERND WITH THE PEOPLE WHO IT IS AFFECTING THE MOST, BLACKS AND GAYS! I AM A BIT OF A CONSPIRACY THEORIST!
Awesome.
fresh.
as a volutneer in an ASO and also as a volutneer in street outreach…IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!
WOWSERS!
Re: LettyB – letty that was deep.
!@#
Re: mama of 2 – I KNOW MY BRAIN IS HURTING, TIME FOR SOME JD!
Re: mama of 2 – Antiterrovirals right now minimize the possibility to spread it. You can still catch it but the chances are very low. People who usually spread it are people who is not aware they have it and have high viral numbers without any control. When was the last time you got tested? lol
CLAP!
yawns.
Re: erhg74 – lol
i got tested with both my kids.
they test yo when you are preggers for everything.
Re: LettyB – pass the bottle.
I have found the cure for aids!
Stop fucking each other up the ass without a condom!
Problem solved!
Oh, and all you other morons stop having unprotected sex too!
Not if the pharmaceutical companies have anything to say about it! Pharmas depend on repeat business and if a "cure" is found then it's "one and done" and they can't keep the customers coming back for more! Shoot, they could have found cures for the different kinds of cancers by now but if they did, then they're out of business! Remember, scientists are NOT salesmen!
Re: mama of 2 – Is a treatable disease nowadays.. I find super interesting how in Europeans countries and some south american countries (Argentina and Brasil) government push a lot of money into vaccine research, might be cause all of these countries are after the solution of the problem due they have universal heatlhcare. Here in the states they have a perfect business since affected people just live off the meths for the rest of their life and it's almost like paying a rent in order to live. Since this is profitable for insurances companies and perfect business for manufacturers the government really do very little to find out a vaccine. Sad sad.
?
Re: hammernator – THANK YOU, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO BELIEVES THIS! PPL TELL ME I AM CRAZY WHEN I SAY THIS!
Re: Honey Rider – WOW YOU ARE FUCKING BRILLIANT!

Re: LettyB –
Oh, is that your theory? You came up with that or you heard it somewhere? Where is the money lost exactly? I work in clinical research and I can tell you there is no cure. Why would scientists spend years and years and about 500 million to find the cure and not manufacture? More money would be made having it approved by drug agencies and manufactured for use rather than sitting on such a huge discovery.
Who do you think funds vaccine research? It isn't solely the NIH. The pharmaceutical companies (known in clinical research as "industry") spend millions upon millions of dollars to investigate vaccines.
They don't spend the money for nothing. Results are expected. If in three or four years (doubtful) there is an efficacious, therapeutic HIV vaccine, the pharmaceutical company that sponsored the research will rake in billions.
Re: Anonymous – YOU WORK IN CLINICAL RESEARCH! ENOUGH SAID!
Re: LettyB – AND I NEVER SAID I CAME UP WITH IT MYSELF, AS YOU KNOW IT IS A WELL KNOWN THEORY AND I CHOOSE TO BELIEVE IT!
Re: Anonymous – oh yes, amuse me narrow head and tell me what clinical research do you do? What are you? front desk? lol
!
Re: LettyB – Thanks!
I try…
You guys obviously have no idea how the pharmaceutical company works. Anonymous and MissJezebel are right. if there was truly a cure it would be made public AFTER all of the hoops the company has to jump through with the FDA. Part of why drugs are so expensive is because they have to pay for the drug to be approved in addition to all the drugs they had been testing that fail, which is a huge amount. Merck developed an HIV vaccine a few years ago that ended up GIVING 31 people HIV, so subsequently companies have gotten more conservative about research into the vaccines to prevent the same mistake.
Next time, maybe try not to be so ignorant. Of course you have no problem taking drugs and vaccines when you or your family is sick but you're so quick to judge when it doesn't affect you.
Hmm, "therapeutic" vaccines make me nervous. We have already shown through our over use of antibiotics that micro organisms can and will adapt to medications relatively quickly.
4 years to introduce a therapeutic vaccine. How many more years until these patients are diagnosed with "Super HIV"?
Re: LettyB –
I work in clinical research as well. In HIV research actually. I used to work for the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Which falls under the umbrella of the NIH—>National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease—>Department of AIDS. The NIH has aprtnered with several industry companies to fund and research HIV vaccines. Both preventive and therapuetic. Although that arm is the ACTG (AIDS Clinical Trial Group) which investigates therapuetic vaccines and not preventive ones like the HVTN does.
I now work for the United States Army in clinical research. Once again in HIV and AIDS.
I can assure you that if there were a cure for HIV or AIDS, we would have produced it by now.
Re: LettyB –
What does 'ENOUGH SAID' mean? Do you really think pharma companies would spend so much money to research and not have it approved for use? They would make billions! If you believe this theory you must have researched it some, right? Explain to me where the money would be lost if a vaccine to cure AIDS were approved? Do you even know what goes into research, taking molecules all the way to drug form? That maybe 1 out of 5000 compounds make it to market? Please enlighten me.
Re: Badger05 –
I actually helped recruit for that vaccine trial. It didn't give people HIV. It did not prevent HIV in high-risk individuals. Such as MSMs with multiple partners, high-risk women, or IV drug users.
The vaccine itself was not a live or attenuated vaccien. There was no HIV present in it. So it was impossible to actually give HIV to anyone. Since the individuals involed were already participating in high risk behaviors, they were routinely exposed to HIV and the vaccine was ineffective.
Re: erhg74 –
Actually, I am a nurse working for a pharma co doing oncology research. There is not a cure for cancer either.
mario, read it a while ago on another site. stick to celebrity news you pathetic fucktard.
Whether necessary or not you can bet it won't be a one time treatment. With a monthly supply of the newest HIV drug, Atripla, costing a whopping $1,400, there's no way the pharm companies will take such a hit. Sad, but true.
hiv is a harmless passenger virus. people in the 80s destroyed their immune system from coke, poppers and dirty sex, and the AZT they were prescribed (the most toxic substance ever approved by the FDA) finished off the job. Luc Montagnier, the guy who this article is about, has repeatedly made the claim that hiv is not sufficient to kill you (lead to AIDS) without serious co-factors. Many don't believe hiv has a role in AIDS whatsoever.
AIDS is all CAPS ! ! ! !
i have
stop having random sex
That is good news.
Doctor Michael Savage used
to work in an AIDS hospice,
by the way.
He is NOT a homophobe.
That's funny. People are so stupid. All these diseases are curable. It's all about MONEY! SURPRISE SURPRISE! Because as long as people are sick they will need medicine and the pharmaceutical companies will make money! And all the high up rich crackers can live their lavish lifestyles. Time to do some reading.
WOO!
Why would companies spend millions of dollars researching these drugs to hide them?
Thats ridiculous.
They work to find cures to save people.
But like everything it costs a pretty penny to do all the research and production to the cost can be high.
Re: vagvagwhatvag –
Stop the hate! Perez can post what he like and this is an important issue!
HIV is a serious factor in the world today and it along with cancer need cures.
If you dont like what he posts dont read the article or his site at all!
We're here to discuss not hate.
Re: T.rex –
HIV is harmless? Harmless? It destroys your immune system! With a weakened immune system a simple cold could kill you!
Yes you can live fine for years with HIV and treatment while taking good care of yourself, but you'd have to live in a bubble not to ever catch anything!
We need a cure for it.
this would be AMAZING!!!

What's funny? The fact you are stupid? Maybe you should do some reading. No shit Sherlock, sick people do need medicine. Do you work for free? Of course companies get paid for product. Do you think pharma companies produce drugs without investing time and money?
It's hard to believe that a Nobel Prize winner would spell it Aids, when it is an acronym. AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Let's hope it was the mistake of the incredibly uninformed journalist that wrote this. Ugh.
