This is sounds somewhat crazy, amazing and a tad bit disturbing all together.
A man in Germany has received the world's first complete double arm transplant.
Karl Merk, a farmer, said he was shocked and then overjoyed when he woke up from surgery to find that he once again had arms!
Three months after surgery, a press conference was held yesterday, Wednesday, where the 54 year-old Merk said, "It was really overwhelming when I saw that I had arms again."
He wore a sleeveless black shirt which showed very clearly where the new arms had been grafted.
Can you imagine waking up and having a dead person's arms on your body?????
Insane!!!!
Merk added, "These are my arms, and I'm not giving them away again."
The operation took place at the Munich University Clinic and lasted over 15 hours. They needed a total of 40 surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and support staff to carry out the operation.
As for Merk losing his arms, that happened when he was injured in a combine harvester accident.
Merk can already perform simple tasks such as turning lights on and off and can even open doors.
Thankfully the doctors say there is no sign of his body rejecting the arms so far.
Merk ultimately hopes to be able to dress himself and eat, eventually maybe even ride a motorcycle.
NOOOO! No riding in motorcycles with those arms!
Doctors say it can take up to two years before he relearns how to use his hands, though.
Christoph Hoehnke, one of the lead doctors, said "All in all, our wildest expectations have pretty much been fulfilled."
Amazing!

How would you feel if you had no arms? This poor guy had to endure pain and psychological trauma. Good for him. I would do the same thing if I lost my arms. All the soldiers coming back from Iraq with missing limbs- shouldn they have a choice to have a limb transplant or prosthetic. Will you make fum of them too? They are fighting for the US so you can keep YOUR freedom of speech.
OH - I forgot, the Republican US Government prefers to spend your taxpayers money - a further 30 billion or so I just read TODAY - in AIG …so that their TOP managerial staff can again enjoy some wellness ….and on illegal unjustified attacks and wars on foreign countries such as Iraq - INSTEAD OF on establishing a US Health Insurance system in the USA like we have here in Europe!

I read just todsay in a Germasn online paper that 3 or 4,000 Iraq soldiers from the USA will return to their German Headquarters at Grafenwoehr/Bavaria - unfortunately 26 of them can not return alive, they were killed in Iraq for Cheney s and Bush family's OIL and economic INTERESTS in the Iraq region!

In an EARLIER news item in German papers months ago, it said that the farmer had lost BOTH his arms already 6(!) years ago before he got the transplant now. The arms are from an "organ donor".

What if the arms belonged to a serial killer, and once they healed up, they started trying to kill people involuntarily, and he has to surrender to his arms and!!

A lot more advancements in science will be made if stem cell research is allowed again in our great country. We just have to get rid of the religious right first.
Idk if you guys understand how this works, but it's pretty awesome. I watched a special about a guy who burned both his arms to nothing after being electrocuted while working on a transformer. They gave him prosthetic arms, then took samples of nerves from his chest and grafted them into the stubs on his arms. These nerves were now alive in his arms, and all he had to do was think of the movement he wanted to do and the nerves would connect w/ the prosthetic and move it. It was fucking incredible and it makes me happy to know that people still have a chance to have their limbs after they are lost.

I image, like with other transplants, he has to take medication to prevent rejection of the limbs. The problem with that is they suppress the immune system…many patients end up facing issues like cancer. I would rather have robotic arms than have to suppress my immune system…it is very dangerous.

Sometimes the ends do not justify the means. And I just had a family member die of Parkinson's within the last month (wonderful man) so do not even TRY to say I don't get it. I fucking get it. Wow, I don't even have a snide comment. That's wonderful for him and I hope that amputee science and medicine keeps expanding so all sorts of cases can be helped.
Think of how much we as a society can accomplish…but nooo our government wants to blow money on bailouts for rich people and wars we shouldn't be in.
