There's no such thing as "picking only the coverage you need." There are 3 categories only.

1) Normal - similar to what you might have now, see a Dr., $20 copay, but you are basically covered. For a family, about $1,500/month
2) Pay a premium - normally $5,000 per person, then you get coverage similar to above. Family - $1,000/month

3) Catastrophic care - only if you are in a car accident, rushed to the hospital. Not covered if your child breaks an arm, any and all sickness, etc.
Family - $600/month.

Under McCain - $5,000 (of which you will need to come up with $1,250 straight cash at tax time if you are in the 25% tax bracket) will be sent to your "choice." The net amount to you is $3,725.

Your only choice is #3 for your family - what's called the catastropic/emergency only option - which will STILL cost you $7,200 per year.

What McCain's website doesn't tell you is what its like to try to get insurance on your own. Please believe me, I have 2 friends who decided to start their own small businesses — neither could afford the $800+ insurance, and these were hard working adults.

All either could afford was the "emergency" insurance - and then they just prayed to god they wouldn't get sick.
