Through The Grapevine: Marvin Gaye Biopic Coming Soon

The rebellious Prince of Motown - Marvin Gaye - is receiving a double film treatment for the near future.
Italian Job director F. Gary Gray is slated to direct - with producers David Foster and Duncan McGillivray attached. Blood Diamond's writer, C. Gaby Mitchell, is signed on to pen the script.
Unlike the film Sexual Healing, which will focus on Gaye's decline post-Motown, Gray's Marvin will cover the entire span of the musician's life, from his rise to Prince of Soul, his defiance of the restrictive hit-making Motown system, his fall and comeback, and finally his tragic 1984 death at the hands of his father.
The production was hung up on acquiring the rights to Gaye's catalog, but with that issue finally cleared up, producers are shopping the film around for some financing.
The actors will lip-sync Marvin's songs, because really now, who could do it better?
Should be interesting to see how Marvin and Sexual Healing will stack up against each other!

This movie has been in the works for a while with actor Jesse L. Martin (Law&Order) in the lead roles. And yes, he has the pipes to sing the songs. Remember Jesse was in the original Boradway cast of Rent as Tom Collins. He is the beautiful voice that sings "I'll cover you" Check it out on YouTube, but watch the reprise.

I know of someone that would be fantastic in this role…Ben Harper! He already did a cover of Sexual Healing…which was awesome. He even favors Marvin a tad.

Marvin's dad was a piece of work, hence, the kid never had a chance. Sr. was a minister, yet a cross-dresser, and an alchoholic as well. Marvin still love his dad, in spite of his contradictions. Marvin was to receive a million dollars in royalties, and he asked Barry Gordy for the money in cash, so that he could take it to his dad and prove to dad that he was a success. What a shame.
