AC/DC Gonna Make Their Fans Work For It

black-iccceee.jpg

AC/DC is not down with iTunes.

Instead of allowing fans the one-click ease of digital music, along with the option to purchase just one track or the entire album, AC/DC devotees will have to schlep to either a Wal-Mart or Sam's Club to pick up their new album, or purchase it off their official website.

Ewww, who wants to go to Wal-Mart????

Black Ice is the band's first album in eight years and even though traditionally the band has managed to perform well despite their anti-digital campaign, a lot has changed since 2000 and Stiff Upper Lip.

Lead singer Brian Johnson thinks that digital outlets such as iTunes are going to kill music, because they are just in it for the money. "It's a…monster, this thing. It just worries me. And I'm sure they're just doing it all in the interest of making as much…cash as possible. Let's put it this way, it's certainly not for the…love, let's get that out of the way, right away."

Oh yeah, like selling through Wal-Mart isn't selling out!

If he knew anything about music, he'd know that the single was actually one of the first and traditional ways to purchase pop music.

You know when you get that one song stuck in your head and you've just got to hear it? You can just go to iTunes or Amazon, and within just a few clicks, it's yours! No trekking to Wal-Mart and battling bored teens.

We'll see how their Luddite approach fares in album sales.

Personally, we love iTunes!

What fans? Tina Chen has more fans than AC DC.

  2. 2

What is Ac/DC? Alternative current and direct currrent?

  3. 3

Perez: Nobody gives a fuck about AC/DC. It is all about Britney in the music scene. Your site is boring me to tears. Get up with all the latest Britney dish. She is having her comeback and you're talking about AC/DC? What the hell? Britney forever!!!!!

  4. 4

interesting….on one hand, most people I think purchase online…but I probably does make the music industry suffer…I dunno!

  5. 5

Wal~mart is awesome…*sigh* hippies. It's the cheapest place in town and I'm on a budget… so suck it Perez

  6. 6

I won't be going to wal-mart to get it, that's skanky. They do not have good labor practices, among other things.

  7. 7

    Re: perezcious
    oh, contrare………
    I give a fuck
big black dick gives a fuck
and a good fuck we give

  8. 8

    Good luck with that.

  9. 9

    Re: perezcious
AC/DC is one of the greatest rock legends of all time. Britney is a popstar that will be long forgotten in ten years. (Including her year of drama.) AC/DC has already lasted longer than that.

  10. 10

    really Perez? AC/DC? Next….

  11. 11

yeah wal-mart is for the poor folk–dirty!

  12. 12

more power to em…. itunes is EVIL!!!!!!

  13. 13

Re: wanna milk me?? – Dirty deeds done dirt cheap!

  14. 14

Why am I not surprised that Slugboy Hilton loves iTunes?Seems appropriate that one parasite would have the hots for another.

  15. 15

Hahaha. Listen up AC/DC nobody gives a fuck about you anymore-You will end up owing the record company.

  16. 16

"If he knew anything about music"…

Seriously Perez, like you would know more than they do? hahaha

  17. 17

Re: You WishRe: ChrmdPiXie – Yeah, but you have to Wal-Mart early before all the mutants get there to shop, you know before the buses get running.

  18. 18

    Re: Big Black Dick
    you might get
    the jack
when you get a whole lotta rosie….
let me put MY love into you….

  19. 19

i love walmart and am greatful for it. having recently been laid off it has helped me make ends meet. not all of us live in lala land.

  20. 20

I'm gonna punch perez in the mouth. Wal-Mart rules!!!!

  21. 21

Itunes is pretty fierce. but Rhapsody, Amazon are cool too. Are there any Wal Mart's in LA? I don't have anything against Wal Mart, and no one really should if they're looking to save their money during these economic crazy times. AC/DC should also sign with Costco, I love buying my Malibu rum there

  22. 22

    I like Walmart.

  23. 23

Wal-Mart is the shit! Step off, Perez.

Thank you AC/DC!! I love iTunes for its convenience but it what happens when CD's are no longer available and all and artist can depend on is digital sales? Because the sad truth is people that eventually standards of living will go up as they always do and Apple and all those other digital stores will have to rais their prices because mechanical royalty rates will rise for the publishers/writers/artists. And those people will deserve the raise. Just as you do yearly. If we let digital stores become the conglomerates on music sales that will be to our own wallets downfalls.
If artists don't agree to digital distribution then it forces CD sales which is great. However for the most part, AC/DC fans will go out and buy the CD…it's just the age they come from.

  25. 25

wow AC/DC needs to get with the times! booo!!!

  26. 26

Artists hate iTunes, because people now have the ability to buy the few decent songs on an album rather than the entire album. Whoops, now they actually have to make the entire album good rather than a few hits and a few bombers!

  27. 27

The lead singer reminds me of a exboyfriend….ewwwww

  28. 28

I thought AC DC was dead. As in, I literally assumed some or all of the members had died by now.

Walmart, itunes, I'm still not into that anymore.

  29. 29

AC/DC had about 3 maby 4 major hits, but that's about it. They can't even begin to compare with the Led Zeppelin they tried so hard to imitate who had about 30 major rock and roll hits. Sorry, AC/DC fans. Zeppelin knew when to quit. When Bonham died of alcohol withdrawal, they knew at that point their work would forever be immoralized, and very wisely withdrew from the public, with few exceptions. They have since sold more records than they did during the 70's, and during the 70's they outsold the Beatles and The Stones combined, if that tells you anything. There is something to be said for old rockers layin' low, and letting their enduring mystic sell for them.

  30. 30

Brian Johnson turned 61 years old last week. No wonder he doesn't like iTunes. He probably hasn't figured out how to use a f*cking computer.

  31. 31

ACDC still rocks on. They have great songs. Those guys are getting old, though. That must suck for them.

  32. 32

fuck you perv-rex! not all of us get paid ridiculous amounts of money to sit on our asses (a fat one in your case) and type all day. we actually have to work at real jobs that pay enough but not any extra. there's nothing wrong with shopping at wal-mart. we'll see where your big ass shops when your 15 minutes are up.

  33. 33

Re: Genghis Khan – i agree :) zepplin is the best! i do like ac/dc, some of it, or a little anyway… but yeah, zepplin. i'm gonna hunt my old cds up right now…

  34. 34

iTunes rocks. There are often times when I'm feeling nostalgic, and I'll buy a single or two from 10 years ago just because I feel like it at midnight on iTunes. But if I had to trek down to WalMart, I wouldn't bother.

Seriously, I am sure the artists will make WAY more money from iTunes because of the people who will buy it on a whim.

Get with 2008. ITunes is the way to go. I will not buy an actual 'CD' ever again. Who wants to store a stupid CD, when you can just have your music on your computer and stream it to your AppleTV to play on your speakers? GET WITH THE PROGRAMS YOU HOLDOUTS! You are not proving anything or standing for anything, except showing the world you are not a modern thinker. People in 2008 want their tunes online, and they want them at any hour of the day.

  35. 35

ewww, who wants to go to walmart? Try about a ton of people on a budget.
Get real Perez. Stop being uppitty.

  36. 36

There's good reason why Perez dishes Wal-Mart. They have low prices, to be sure, but they come at a high price in other ways. PBS writes:

Wal-Mart employs more people than any other company in the United States outside of the Federal government, yet the majority of its employees with children live below the poverty line. "Buy American" banners are prominently placed throughout its stores; however, the majority of its goods are made outside the U.S. and often in sweatshops. Critics believe that Wal-Mart opens stores to saturate the marketplace and clear out the competition, then closes the stores and leaves them sitting empty. Freedom of speech issues also come into play. Musicians are at the mercy of Wal-Mart's stringent content rules, forcing many to create "sanitized" versions of their albums specifically for the discount chain.

The sentiment behind Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton's promise of a "better life for all" belies questionable business practices - many that have been challenged by employees, unions, environmentalists, recording artists and human rights organizations.

Aside from the cheap prices, Wal-Mart is NOT a good place!

  37. 37

did you honestly say, "if he knew anything about music" are you serious… i'm assuming they've been famous since before you were born, because you look pretty dang old man…. hair pluuuuuuuuuuuugs. and how are you going to diss on wal-mart when you couldn't even manage to sell clothes at hot topic. those lame kids didn't even want to buy your clothes! but i'm sure they'll manage to go to wal-mart to buy the ac/dc cd…. because they'll want to look cool and think they know so much about classic rock. baaaaaaaah. stupid american youth.

  38. 38

I'll have to explain this to you, Perez, myself. Brian's right. While the CONVENIENCE FACTOR is high for acquiring music, itunes, WalMart, and their kind have no interest in DEVELOPING an artist. That is what he's talking about. So unless you can guarantee that you'll make a lot of money for the conglomerates, they will kill the artist development industry. That's why record companies aren't signing the small artist. I enjoy the digital age and access to music, but the business has changed and it's not all for the better. Talk to the artists. Don't just piss on them cause you can't download their shizz.

  39. 39

Re: punky.penguin – You do that, and while you are at it, their first LP is the best. Good Times Bad Times, Babe I'm Going to Leave You, I Can't Quit You Babe (my personal favorite), Bring it On Home, Dazed and Confused. Then skip over to the second LP and it only gets so much better: Whole Lotta Love, The Lemon Song, Living Love Maid, Mobey Dick, etc. You can't beat it, ever.

  40. 40

DUMB. I'm sure someone said 45s would kill music, too.

  41. MP says – reply to this

    41

Only selling to Walmart is definitely selling out. I love iTunes. Maybe if artists made a quality album and didn't put fillers and fluff in it, more people would want to buy the entire album. More people should be taking advantage of their local libraries, most have CD's and DVD's you can check out for free or a nominal fee.

  42. 42

Re: punky.penguin – LOL!! You got that right!! AC/DC is named after altnerate current/direct current. It is an electician's term to decifier if the energy source dirived off alternate current (which are waves that move up and down, up and down, etc.) or direct current (which are straight waves, uninterupted). A classic case of alternate currentd are high speed internet and phone services by the cable company. A classic case of direct currents are tradional land line telephone service and DSL. Because the wave lenghts are so even and steady, it it hard to knock out or tamper with a landline or DSL. Cable internet and phone can easily be interrupted because their upwards and downwards contant motions can easily be molested.

  43. 43

All of AC/DC's albums sound exactly the same anyway, so save your money and just listen to the old ones for free!!

  44. 44

Hey Old Man, DUH ….Wal-mart is way worse than I Tunes you old fuck. At least I Tunes gets mostly AMERICAN made shit instead of lead based Chinese shit. ASSHOLE

  45. 45

"It's a…monster, this thing. It just worries me. And I'm sure they're just doing it all in the interest of making as much…cash as possible"
    And this is bad because………………..?

  46. 46

Thank God AC/DC is back!! With all of the shit out right now pretending to be rock n' roll (ahem…the jonas brothers and any other Disney creation) its great that True Rock Stars are coming back. As for having to buy the whole CD, think about it this way…a CD sells for around $16, take out the money that goes back to the record company (its called recoupment people), then the money for producers, any songwriters that were used, managers, and other various expenses. At the end of the day an artist gets maybe 7 cents from every CD bought. Now take and minus all of those expenses from the .99 cents you pay for a song on iTunes. The artist gets screwed!

  47. 47

Ugh, Walmart's in Utah edit out all the bad words.

  48. 48

    i owon't be buying it.
i'd get shot going to our walmarts.
i'd want a security team just when i'm getting out of the car.
    hahaha.

  49. 49

what's up with artists going through wall mart now? best buy can seel new albums for $10 bucks!!!

  50. 50

Actually Wal-Mart is the #1 retail of music. If your not selling music in Wal-Mart then you are not making money. iTunes is the #1 digital music store. But doing it this way will allow them to keep most of their money. But AC/DC has a huge following for 65 year old hippies that are dying to hear their wack ass music again.

  51. 51

This is the wave of the future. Itunes, in time, will be dead. Artists will eventually sell their music from their own websites which will in turn mean more money in the artists pocket and cheaper downloads for the fans. AD/DC, David Byrne, and Joe Jackson are just a few early adopters.

Mark my word, within 5 years. . . Bye bye BMG. . . bye bye Itunes, bye bye. . .

  52. 52

    I'm a long-time fan of AC/DC and I won't buy their album.
I hate Wal-Mart. They're nothing but filthy exploitors. I never shop there.
    They suck for doing this.

  53. 53

    Ew Walmart.

I use iTunes the most but there are other decent ones out there when I can't find things on iTunes. I've even picked up a couple songs from amazon lately, and it cost the same as iTunes.

Making things more inconvenient like limited formatting and accessibility just punishes the legitimate buyers. Good thing I don't actually care about buying this!

  54. 54

ok am I the only one who read it all the way through? 3 ways to buy, wal-mart, sams club (same thing actually) or THEIR OWN WEBSITE
I've gotten to listen to this all the way through from the local radio station, and it's REALLY GOOD

BTW FATSO, FUCK YOU, SOME OF US ARE ON A BUDGET SO WE DO GO TO WAL-MART

  55. 55

    LOVE AC/DC AND WALMART ROCKS!

  56. 56

I live in Wal-Mart world and the SUCK ASS! I will not even listen to this album now, anyone that works with Wal-Mart of Natzi's. Seriously. And $90 for a concert ticket? They must think people actually want to see them that bad. Not likely.

  57. 57

WALMART? don't they know WALMART and SAM'S CLUB uses child labor to manufacture the goods they sell? I used to like AC/DC but I will not be buying this album or ANYTHING through WALMART … they came in and put all of the mom and pop businesses out of business in our entire state. puke.

  58. 58

YAY YAY YAY AC/DC ROCK!!!!! Rock is so NOT dead with AC/DC and Metallica!!!!! Thank GOD! I don't care where I get the music personally

  59. 59

Fuck them! Just for that Im going to download their CD through the Torrents and not pay a dime! Idiots!

  60. 60

Smart people go to Walmart especially with this economy. Sure not going to line designers pockets with hard earned cash.

  61. 61

    Zune is better.

  62. 62

Normal folks do shop at Wal*Mart! (for dog food, household items, etc.) Where else would a person buy these things? Nice area host nice Wal*Marts! Who cares!

Just want to comment on what "Melissa is always right" has put..
"What fans? Tina Chen has more fans than AC DC."

AC/DC are possibly one of the biggest rock bands
and if you don't like them,
    why are you commenting this???
    Ahh confusing :)

On the otherhand i agree with them, it's their music, if they don't want it on itunes then big deal!
I'm sure people will get over it
    ;)

It seems that most people who have commented this saying AC/DC are crap are
    slags
    whores
    extremely materialistic
looks seem to be all that matters to them
They are the sorts of people who think that if they like everything in the charts they will become popular…
    etc :)
Not normally one to judge but come on it's AC/DC
i'm actually glad i live in England i probably wouldn't be able to deal with all the lasses in America aha :)

  64. 64

Re: MDiva22 – miss diva, i think you've just explained it all.

  65. 65

omg!! some of you are too good to shop at wal mart, and the people that say its dirty? Where the hell do you shop? Somewhere overpriced when Ken and Barbie will see you. Making 250k a year and shopping at wal mart saves a little money ? I must be so dirty.. fuck you you fucking fucks that think you are al hollier than though..

  66. 66

    or excuse me than thou

  67. 67

Walmart sells online, the cd costs eleven and change. This is the only way now, for an artist to make money. Why did the Eagles sell their cd only at Walmart, money. The music industry is basically dead, this is all a money thing for AC DC . The teenies here will not understand, what I just wrote, do not try. Stay with your Jonas brothers and all of your other poseurs….

  68. 68

haha you guys really should open up your little main stream box you've confined yourself in and shut the fuck up because im pretty sure its NOT all about britney spears!? but maybe im deaf. or maybe you're just dumb.

and anyway, if itunes doesnt have it limewire does!

    i hate walmart.

  69. 69

oh yall are right, acdc isnt a big deal. britney spears will last forever and acdc will owe the record company. especially since over a decade later theyre name is still household and 2 generations later theyre still recognized as one of the greatest rock legends LOL

you stupid people need to quit sucking up so much air and fill your heads with something other than useless shit.

    Re: MDiva22
Oh jeez i totally agree with this
Jonas Brothers + rock are not meant to be together
    Apparantly Hannah Montana is rock
    Fecking hannah montana my arse
    and to everybody else
i don't even shop at wal-mart obv cause we don't have it over here
but whats the big deal with shopping there?
It's like everybody over here s too "cool" to be seen in home bargains cause it's cheap but has big brands
    wtf?
It doesn't make any sense to me
    everybodys all about image now.
AC/DC are the one's keeping it real
    they're amazing
and i'm off to see them HELL YESS :D
