The Price Of Fresh Breath

brush-your-teeth.jpg

That $3 to $10 you're spending on mouthwash may or may not be money flushed down the toilet…or rinsed down the sink.

And it may be actually staining your teeth to boot!!!!

A recent review of past studies on bad breath and mouthwash explores the effectiveness of products such as Listerine.

With more than half the population concerned with halitosis - the offensive odor created by the gases released by bacteria feeding off food stuck in oral crevices - the mouthwash industry is sure to never go out of business.

The review found that on top of brushing and flossing, rinsing does actually reduce and control bad breath, through either killing the bacteria or masking the stinky sulfur compounds.

But…….fresh breath may come at a dirty price. The chemical responsible for battling the bacteria - chlorhexidine - can stain the teeth and tongue.

That's what teeth-whitening kits are for, right?

Folks. You think you got screwed with this bailout. Your tax dollars are also being used to support a radical group like ACORN who is trying to put Hussein Obama (a known Muslim) in the White House. My friends this is a radical group that uses bully tactics to secure loans for people who cannot afford them and then skims off 20% of the loan for themselves. Vote McCain. We also have Prop 8 in CA almost defeated Keep up the good work.

This is all a scam for the big companies, government to make money. Do you want to offend with foot odor? Do you feel not so fresh? Has your husband gone down on you and complained about anal sac odor? Don't offend! Pay us $29.99 and we'll sell you this useless chemical which causes cancer and helps you forget the stink!

What a crock. Whatever happened to the times of the Caveman?

Re: Furby Fuckina Fuckwad – There are 2 things that smell like tuna and one of them is tuna.

  12. 12

be careful with too much whitening. It can damage your teeth

  13. 13

They have a new 2 hour whitening kit out now, that is, if you want whiter teeth in a hurry. As far as the mouthwash staining your teeth and tongue, it's best to stick to the old school nasty-flavored Listerine.

  14. 14

Re: Furby Fuckina Fuckwad – But once you get passed the smell you got it licked!

  15. 15

Does that include Listerine? It has more purpose than breath freshening.

  16. 16

as long as you rinse your mouth with water after you use mouthwash the chlorhexidine shouldn't stain your teeth

what the fuck does this have to do with celebrity news?

  19. 19

    Re: mchong

But if you rinse with water after you rinse with mouthwash, it negates the effect of the mouthwash.

This is old old old news! Yes, chlorhexidine can stain your teeth. But, if you brush correctly, most likely not. Bleeching eats off your gums & enamel as well! So, you really can't win for loosing.

Did I mention that this is very old news? Anyone who cares enough about the appearance of their smile, would already know this….

  22. 22

no not true… chlorhexidine kills the bacteria on contact, so you should rinse for 30 seconds with mouthwash that contains chlorhexidine, then rinse with water so it won't stain your teeth.

but if you think you're washing away the minty flavor then i guess you can chew some gum or something… so your teeth wont get stained.

  23. 23

Prolonged use of mouth wash also causes your gums to recede.

I am a registered dental hygienist and some of this information is being misinterpreted. As someone mentioned before it is very old news that chlorhexidine stains teeth. Anyone in the dental profession could tell you this. What is also not mentioned is that chlorhexidine mouth rinses are a controlled substance and only available with a prescription in most states. They are also only prescribed to patients with periodontal disease, and not for halitosis. Mouth rinses you see in stores such as Listerine, Scope, and Crest ProHealth do not contain chlorhexidine and use other methods such as menthol, thymol, eucalyptol, and methyl salicylate. If any staining does occur it can easily be removed by brushing properly with a power toothbrush, or seeing your dental hygienist for a professional cleaning. Nothing to worry about for long term staining.

Re: sweetpiece – lol, but he didn't get it on my teeth sweetpiece! just a nice little hitler moustache. ;-)

  27. 27

I'm a dentist. Chlorhexidine is a great anti-bacterial agent. It can stain — but it only stains plaque and bacteria. Not teeth. If you're having staining from mouthwash, what it means is that you aren't brushing well enough to get the plaque off in the first place. Your dental hygienist can get the stains off for you via a cleaning and then you will also know where your hygiene needs improvement.

  28. 28

just so you know…chlorhexidine is prescription only, and is only given away for wisdom teeth and perio disease, and your dentist WILL tell you that it stains teeth, and to not rinse w/ it. You only apply to the area of the gum that needs it. As for say Crest Mouth Rinse… it doesn't even have chlorhexidine in it, so rinsing is fine, and it will not stain!

My baby does have the whitest teeth. BTW is it just me or does perez look like the freak offspring from his mom getting raped by a baboon? 8)

  31. 31

I think having bad breath is much worse than having stained teeth.

  32. 32

I hope that FDS doesn't stain teeth!

  33. 33

No Tooth Bleaching is needed–Chlorhexidine Gluconate is only available by prescription and stains teeth if used for over a week. OTC mouth washes for the most part do not—unless it is crest prohealth and you use it all the time!!! FYI

  34. 34

I always have the Listerine in my mouth too long. Maybe I should spit it out after 20-30 seconds like it says.

  35. 35

wanna control your halitosis, brush your tongue. it's amazing how many people don't brush their tongue while brushing their teeth.

  36. 36

Hey everyone!!! Im a dental hygenist and just to set the record straight…. there is NO CHLORHEXIDINE in listerine or any other over the counter mouthwash…. Chlorhexidine must be perscribed and is for major gum infections only…. it does stain your teeth slightly HOWEVER it is stain that is easily removed with a dental cleaning and as for your tongue: Brush it!!… As for listerine… it is a good product for day to day rinsing although the main ingredient: alcohal, does dry the oral tissues… I did learn something in school hahaha
PEREZ I LOVE U BUT GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!

  37. 37

Hey guys, just to let you know, Listerine does not contain Chlorhexidine. You have to have a prescription from your dentist(or other Dr.) to receive it. Unless of cousre you live in the UK, then you can buy it at the drugstore. Listerine is great for gingivitis and bad breath, yes please brush your tongue!
    your gentle dental hygienist- Tracy

Do you know that Listerine was once a fuckin' TOILET CLEANER?
