That $3 to $10 you're spending on mouthwash may or may not be money flushed down the toilet…or rinsed down the sink.
And it may be actually staining your teeth to boot!!!!
A recent review of past studies on bad breath and mouthwash explores the effectiveness of products such as Listerine.
With more than half the population concerned with halitosis - the offensive odor created by the gases released by bacteria feeding off food stuck in oral crevices - the mouthwash industry is sure to never go out of business.
The review found that on top of brushing and flossing, rinsing does actually reduce and control bad breath, through either killing the bacteria or masking the stinky sulfur compounds.
But…….fresh breath may come at a dirty price. The chemical responsible for battling the bacteria - chlorhexidine - can stain the teeth and tongue.
That's what teeth-whitening kits are for, right?
