Thank you Perez for posting this. Amendment 2 is now the 5th attempt by narrow minded bigots is the state of FL to define love in the way they see fit. THey have succeeded 4 times in the past. This time the bill is written so broadly that ALL domestic partnerships and common law marriages will no longer be recognized. Please let this be the time we all stand up and say enough is enough. VOTE NO on 2.

Why does government want to tell people who they can love or not love?

    6. 6

For a woman and a man, like the ones in this video, if they say that they have a domestic partnership, is that the same thing as a common law marriage, or does it mean something else? (I know this is probably a dumb question, but I just always associate the term "domestic partnership" with a same sex couple.)

I asked my friend's little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, 'If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?'

She replied, 'I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people.'

'Wow…what a worthy goal.' I told her, 'You don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and rake my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use towards food and a new house.'

The little girl thought that over for a few seconds, and then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, 'Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work and you can just pay him the $50?'

I said, 'Welcome to The Republican Party!"

thank you for posting this! nobody should be told by the government who they can or cannot love.

This doesn't only have to do with elder folks in Florida, it affects everyones' rights!!! Please keep posting about amendment 2 and encourage all of your Floridian readers to vote NO ON 2!!!!!!!!! Also, someonesmarter, common law marriage is often misunderstood- even though in the vernacular we use it to refer to unmarried cohabitating couples, the term in actuality refers to married couples. I only point this out because some folks perceive that unmarried couples have certain protections when they don't. Especially not in Florida if we don't get more people to VOTE NO ON 2!!!!!!!!!!

    13. 13

Vote no on 2! It says on the Florida sample ballot that the financial impact would be minimal, or something to that effect. What does that have to do with anything? Seriously, every Floridian like myself needs to vote no on Amendment 2.

    14. 14

Typical stuff that the Republican party wants to do…take more freedoms from people that don't fit into what their idea is of the "right" kind of family. If you are not the married couple then they want to strip you of any rights you may have carved out for yourself. You can skirt the law however if you go to a lawyer and draw up a legal contract between yourself and your partner giving those legal rights to one another. It's actually more binding to enter into this type of a contract than a marriage contract and a hell of a lot harder to get out of than a marriage. To end a marriage, the legal remedy is divorce. To get out of a legal contract, it takes years, if not decades to find the right loopoles to be able to break out of it. When my ex husband and I got back together after a very nasty divorce, I didn't want to remarry him, instead we set up a legal trust that our lawyers drew up…If we split this time, the person that leaves goes out with all of the debt and the clothes on their back and nothing else…trying to get out of this contract is totally impossible…and we both have all of the rights that a married couple have and of course we own property together and have the right to be with one another in hospital and other things that married couples take for granted…I know it may sound twisted, but go through a bad divorce and you will see the light!

Perez, seems like you might want to edit this entry a little because it doesn't look like this is for Seniors only - probably affects anyone in Florida who is in a committed, living-together relationship. Yes, there are a lot of older people who live together (vs getting married) so their Social Security benefits aren't reduced but I bet this bill doesn't limit itself to that kind of circumstance.

Being a Florida resident I am trying to get the word out to all I know about Ammendment 2. People in my office are actually saying they aren't voting this year! Not only is this an important election for the country it is for Floridians. We can't have Ammendemnt 2 pass with all the Senoirs we have that live in our state. Please pass this along to anyone you know. I am going to do early voting tomorrow!!!
