Alec Baldwin Defends Sarah Palin's SNL Appearance

Filed under: TV News > Politik > Alec Baldwin > Sarah Palin

baldwinpalin.jpg

Left, center, right — SNL welcomes politicians of all political stripes and that's how it should be, sayd Alec Baldwin.

Here's what he has to say to those who protested Sexy Sarah's SNL invite.

When Alec isn't angry he makes a whole lotta sense!

Saturday Night Live is a comedy show. It's not Meet the Press. It doesn't "ask the tough questions" or "set the agenda." It attempts, with varying degrees of success, to make people laugh. That's it. Whether they skewer and savage people in order to do so, they don't care. When you come on a show like that, you are prepared in advance to get worked over. Palin knew that. Palin came on to be a good sport. And she was. She was polite, gracious. (More so than some of the famous actors who come through there, believe me.)

However, I assume that, like Meet the Press, SNL feels an obligation to offer their special forum to any and all public figures and officials who are current. Headline making. And in SNL's case, would make for a hit show. Several people decried SNL for giving her a spot on the show. You're kidding, right? The woman is the Vice Presidential nominee of one of the two major parties in this country. Don't put her on SNL? With all of her exposure and the Tina Fey performance? What reality are you in?

If you think an appearance on Saturday Night Live would sway voters and actually effect the outcome of the election, you may have more contempt for the electorate of this country than the Republican National Committee does. And that's a lot of contempt.

Good points!

What do U think????

Wow I'm impressed. He didn't threaten to leave the country.

  4. 4

    First? second??
    OBAMA 2008!!!!!!!!!!

  5. 5

Any idiot can go on SNL and say two words, but not all people can go to Meet the Press and have an intellectual discussion. SNL suits her just fine!!

  6. 6

    SARAH PALIN IS AWESOME!

  7. 7

What I think?? I think VOTE OBAMA!!

  8. 8

Perez, you need some new sponsors on your page…. I'm really tired of watching the fat ass turn into a skinny ass…

Why do people have to be so uptight? Life is a lot easier if you're not upset all the time.

I have a new respect for Alec who is able to act like an adult. Wish more people had his sense this time.

  15. 15

    Aww, good for you Alec.

    GO SARAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. 16

i have a hard time disliking him for anything he says or does…..i love him onscreen…especially on snl

  17. 17

Re: WakeUpPeople – So true WUP….so true. All she did was walk around and raise her hand. Oh….she was so good. ::Yawn::

    18

She had every right to be on the show. She is just as newsworthy as anyone else they have on. For crying out loud, she could be the next VP! And why wouldn't SNL boost their ratings and have her on the show! Tina Fey's impersonations of her have brought in their highest numbers in YEARS! Regardless of whether or not she was funny to everyone, she deserved to be there.

  19. 19

    wow

  20. Limu says – reply to this

    20

hey, any opportunity she takes to make herself look like more of an ass is good for America, and good for SNLs ratings. Shes like watching a trainwreck; horrific, yet facinating.

  21. 21

    OBAMA TOP OF HIS CLASS.
    MCCAIN BOTTOM OF HIS CLASS.
    PALIN NO CLASS AT ALL.

  22. 22

and that's just it…why did she even go on SNL??????she didn't do anything…why doesn't she go on the shows that matter like Meet the Press" that is actually in her so called field of expertise????
oh that's right, because they ask the HARD QUESTIONS….and she doesn't have the answer's, (wink)…

  23. 23

HE JUST WANTS TO BE THE FAVORITE BALDWIN LOL HE LOOKED LIKE HE WAS READING THE CUE CARDS THE ENTIRE TIME…NOT HIS FINEST PERFORMANCE

  24. 24

She was a good sport for going on even though she sucked. That's fine, she's not paid to be an entertainer (well for people with brains we can't help but laugh at her). And I can bet anything that it was her people that wanted her to go on not here. I mean, she saw the first Tina Fey stint with the volume off…cuz people do that all the time….NOT!

  25. 25

At first I was pissed that they gave her the airtime, but she was so un-entertaining and bland that I don't mind. I thought it must have been awkward, however, especially for Tina Fey, who has publicly spoken out against SP. Tina got the hell out of there when SP took the podium, not like Hillary Clinton and Amy Pohler.

  26. 26

Re: Indigo Amber – LMAO!!! I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING

  27. 27

Re: wanna milk me?? – do you feel extra hated today? lol

  28. 28

What a great argument. She is not only, intellectual, intelligent, and a sign of hope for this country.. but she is also humble and is able to make light of the Tina Fey impersonations and laugh along. What a woman, you should all be proud to live in a country where this woman will soon be in a position of power!! Thank God finally a woman in this position, now things will be done right!!!

McCain/Palin 2008!!!! Vote Smart Vote Right Vote for the right kind of change.. Vote McCain!

"…their are some candidates that use change to promote their careers, and then their are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change" - Sarah Palin!

  29. 29

Well said, Alec. Just saw Stephen interviewed on tv and he wondered why people were worried about Palin possibly becoming president someday when she has more experience than Obama. My point exactly. They don't have a snowball's chance of winning but I'll vote for Mc or not at all.

  30. 30

Re: MilaP – I agree, I have a new respect for him as well.

  31. 31

Re: sweetpiece – We'll see after Obama's been president for a couple of years. I'll be lmao at his inability to get things done. Just ’cause he did it in Chicago, certainly doesn't mean he'll do it for the nation. And I just saw a blurb on tv that said that the tax cut he proposes was first proposed by McCain, about 7-8 years ago! Duh.

  32. 32

Re: HARDCORECHEER – Whatever you're smoking….can I have some? Must be some damn good stuff for you to be so delusional. Can't wait for November. You're going to be hit with a nice hard bat called "Reality".

  33. 33

    It's affect, not effect….

  34. 34

Good points??? I can't believe that the American Viewing Public even needs this explained to them. Good for him for being the voice of reason for the idiots out there who just don't get it. And good for him for saying it with some class and dignity.

  35. 35

  39. 39

So let me get this straight…Palin is new to mainstream America (ie. non-Alaskians) and has a responsbility to let the American people know about her so that they can make an informed choice. She apparently doesn't have time to engage with the "liberal" media. She won't field the average reporter's questions. But, she has appeared on the cover of people magazine and has time to appear on SNL. Mmmhmm…whose the celebrity now?

  40. 40

Re: sweetpiece – how do you know he was top of his class he wont even release college information…if anything some arab might have bought him a degree. who knows.

  41. 41

Re: LordKain – And same response to you. You are so confident in Osama, sorry Obama, but when the time comes and Gov. Palin and Senator McCain is in charge I'll feel happy for you that someone out there made the right decision for you to vote McCAIN and PALIN!!!

  43. 43

SNL made a very smart business decision - highest ratings in 14 years.

The liberals here are upset because she didn't hide from the people making fun of her. She looked you right in the face!!!

    He is right.

WTF is wrong with liberals and their insane fucking anger towards Palin. It's beyond bizarre from those who claim to be tolerant

  45. 45

What I THINK? I think he should spell AFFECT correctly.

  46. 46

I think our country would have been much better served if she had gone on meet the press. I guess with SNL, she got the ratings she wanted, so now she doesn't think she has to go on meet the press. Thanks a lot SNL.

    ROCK ON ALEC

  49. 49

    I agree with Mr. Baldwin!

  50. 50

You know Alec would forgive her political outlook for chance to lube her tongue with his Baldwin jizz.

  51. 51

The level of uneducated comments and disrespect that people are showing on this topic is really embarrassing and sad for our country. We should be maintaining a certain level of respect for each party and act like adults.

  52. 52

Do you think the "famous person" he was talking about was Mark Walberg?

  53. 53

That's the smartest thing that fucker has said in years.

  54. 54

He makes some good points but she's also in the middle of this whole abuse of power thing. I'd think she'd try to focus on the election also which is only weeks away instead of going on SNL. Gutsy move, not sure if it will hurt or help, but she won't be getting my vote anyway.

  55. 55

I think Pallin is a fame whore and did it one more time for the popularity of it all. She should be home working on getting some education on what the VEEP does and less on what goes on at SNL

  56. 56

I never thought I would say this, but I agree 100% with Alec Baldwin. People need to chill the eff out. SNL is a comedy show.

  57. 57

I think that dumbass can juggle, jump and shake her tits on SNL and she will still never make it to the Whitehouse.

  58. 58

I think she went on SNL to prove that she can take the joke. I really like her. Anyone who can make fun of themselves and laugh while others do it too, well I just like those kinds of people. Lighten up!

  59. 59

Re: VickiLynn – um what? where are you from, idiotville?

  60. 60

I love Sarah Palin! Alec has a great point and I wish people wouldn't freak out so much. Why is it that we can create pornographic films about her and everything be ok, but as soon as she does one thing to try and appeal to people, she gets shut down? It just shows how sad the American people are.

  61. jefdo says – reply to this

    61

I actually agree with Baldwin for once, minus the jab at the republican's in the last paragraph. I also agree with Palin, "Stephen's my favorite Baldwin." Isn't Alec supposed to have moved out of the country after the last election? What's he still doing here?

  62. DaLa says – reply to this

    62

Alec Baldwin gives the American electorate too much credit. In fact too many of us ARE stupid enough to vote for McCain just because Sarah didn't f up too badly on SNL.

  63. 63

I like politics. Where i live we had a governor a few years ago who was an angel, a really good guy. A Republican. I didn't agree with a lot of stuff he wanted, but I never attacked him, or felt he was evil or dishonest, or a monster. OK? I know how some people felt when they were talking about McCain being a good friend and how disappointed they were that he went so negative and ugly. But Palin? I think she is an evil, hateful, intolerant person. I also happen to think she is dishonest and she lies. I think the media and a lot of people say, "Oh, she is hot! " They joke about her. But when you have her on a show like SNL, you give people the impression that she is basically harmless and we can all just joke about her. But she isn't harmless, and when you invite her on SNL, whether you meant to or not, you are saying, "Look. She's a good sport. She's not so bad." So maybe it will cause some people to be less worried and not feel like going to vote, because, "She's not so bad." So that is why I boycotted SNL and complained. And I don't care about Alec Baldwin's opinion. I think for myself.

  64. 64

that's fine and good. but let's address the fact that IT SUCKED. she did not do ANYTHING funny! poor pregnant amy poehler did it all, and she looks like she could pop at any minute. i was so disappointed.

  65. 65

Re: Leona$ Gho$t – sarwhore palin? dude that's not even a good pun.

He's totally right and I thought Sarah Palin's skits were funny. Now I think she needs to go on Meet the Press and The O'Reilly Factor, tougher venues than SNL.

I think Alec Baldwin is a total douche-bag. He should worry more about how he's talking to his kid then what the nation thinks of Palin being on SNL.

  72. 72

Comment from Senator Biden… AND you think Sarah Palin is scary!!!

"Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking," Biden said.

"Remember I said it standing here. if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy. And he's gonna have to make some really tough — I don't know what the decision's gonna be, but I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it's gonna happen," Biden continued.

  73. zach says – reply to this

    73

Baldwin comapres SNL to Meet the Press then backpedals away from teh influence it does have.
"However, I assume that, like Meet the Press, SNL feels an obligation to offer their special forum to any and all public figures and officials who are current."
Bullshit — it's about one thing: RATINGS. If having the grand wizard of the KKK on would get SNL out of the ratings pit, they'd have him on, too.

  74. 74

When Baldwin is rational, he can be very funny and even articulate but most of the time, the guy doesn't know whether he's coming or going.
The fact that he thinks it's okay to give this creationaist, anti-abortionist, "drill baby drill" fan a forum like SNL just shows hi salleged political views are from the same bag of acxting tricks as his mediocre performance on SNL last Saturday.

  75. 75

Re: moonbeams – Well said!!! You hit the nail on the head.

  76. 76

i completely agree with him. if it were biden or obama on the show, people would be applauding. it's ridiculous the double standards this country has! i really wish people would just come together and do things for the greater good of this country and it's future rather than attack one another and the people in power!!

  77. 77

Re: sognatore – You're attempting to create equivalency that isn't there. Obama and Biden have been thoroughly vetted and have granted open interviews and press conferences — Palin never has. And Obama has been on SNL — of course, the neocons ripped him — which also would naturally happen if Biden were invited to appear on the show.

  78. 78

150 million in contributions in one month and NoBama won't open his books to allow the American voters to see what the money source is. If people are so hard up in this economic crisis, they can't afford to send money to fund a political campaign. I can't afford it and I didn't contribute to either campaign. It has been reported in the media that a lot of money came from outside the US. Be scared….be very scared. As far as SNL is concerned…..this episode was the highest watched program in SNL's history….if so many people hate Palin, why did they watch then?

  79. 79

Obama = doing drugs when he was young. When he got older, he sat in a church for 20 years and listened to a reverend who denounced America. Best of all, he didn't do anything about it until he ran for the election. That's when he decided to leave the church. Talking about a political move.

Obama = rhetoric talk. Never did anything real for his country. Sure he wants to bring this country to a better place? Doesn't anyone? But can anyone tell me what his plan is to bring this country around? By distributing the wealth around. I'm sorry, but my husband worked from 65 hours a day and sometimes from 7 am to 2 am so he could give our family a good life. If he's going to "distribute our family's wealth", then we'll just go work for the government. Why work so much and we can't keep any.

    AMEN!!!

  81. 81

    Re: VickiLynn
you have nothing better to say… 'awesome' is meaningless just like you and this sarah. those who like her, do so because she is nothing. too bad there are many of you 'nothing' out there.

  82. 82

Obama accepted an invitation to host the SNL season premier - but canceled only hours before!

  83. 83

I thought the episode was great… Amy Poehler was HYSTERICAL! I think it is great if anyone can come on TV and basically make fun of themselves…

  84. 84

Know what I think? I think that chunky or not, Alec Baldwin could berate me any time he wants, as long as he's pounding me doggies style and putting his load in me. ;)

  85. 85

The crazy angry loons on the left are so used to the media campaigning for Barack Obama and trashing McCain that any sense of fairness has them apoplectic. To them, the media exists only to sway public opinion. God forbid any network or newspaper show Palin a shred of decency - she is to be ridiculed and lied about, or else!

  86. 86

I'm only a teen and can't tell you much about Alec Baldwin (other than that he wrote a book), but I completely agree with him. There's nothing wrong with Sarah Palin appearing on SNL! Would there have been so much outcry if Obama was a guest? I don't think so! -Caroline L.
