Yeah, it's archaic and awful, but we're talking about Afghanistan. When you hear about people getting arrested and detained in places like Afghanistan or Iran or a communist country like China for simple rights we take for granted in North America, it's terrible, but these people know what they're getting into. Is it wrong that this kid got 20 years in jail for something so ridiculous? Absolutely, but it's entirely unsurprising. At the end of the day, he should have known better.

Whoa. This right here makes a case for what I have been saying about the separation of Church and State in previous posts. Government is a separate entity. The Church, luckily is too. We have the freedom of choosing whether to worship or not without being thrown into prison by the government.
This story shows us how Theocracy is obviously not something that we could get used to here. Even in the tiniest of ways, like writing things into the constitution (fedral or otherwise) based on religious beliefs would be a step in the wrong direction. I'm not saying it is comparable to something so extreme, but still would resemble a Thocratic idea. We are all so proud to be American, and to live in a country where we can question religion and even our leaders.
We are indeed lucky that we still have many freedoms that countries like that don't enjoy. It works for us.
Well, that was a stupid thing to do. Obviously, women aren't treated the same as men in Afghanistan. It totally sucks for the journalist, but he should have known what questions were inappropriate for the class.

what's funny is that negative ideas about women that have no base in the qur'an have apparently become part of muslim thinking by assimilation from surrounding cultures. the scripture does not make any distinction between women and men in terms of spiritual potential, that woman is not considered just a child-bearer, that no explicit division of labor is specified, that marriage is not meant as a means of oppression of women, and that the social reforms started in the holy qur'an are meant to be extended in ever-evolving, changing curcumstances.

as an aspiring investigative journalist, that is very upsetting to me.
As an American Muslim who has lived in a Muslim country in my adult life- no, I'm not Arab/Persian/East Asian- I can assure you that Muslim women have PLENTY of rights. People just percieve us to be these oppressed figures who walk 5 steps behind our spouses and just push kids out and get beat up with complete obedience. Sorry, that's incorrect. A great deal of what people think Islam is, is what they see on TV and read in the Media…and sadly a lot of that is cultural and has nothing to do with the religion itself. Like say this article…if you read it you'll see that they had it out for this guy from the get go based off of who he was related to. They just used the "he was asking too many questions" line to get him in court. There's nothing wrong with asking questions about your religion…especially things pertaining to something as important as women's rights. This verdict has nothing to do with Islam, trust me they had a hidden agenda for this guy long before he asked his questions.
