Celebs Do Make Young People Vote

According to a new study, celebrities CAN influence young voter turnout.

A survey of 305 students at Washington State University found that celebrity initiatives, such as those led by Christina Aguilera, Beyonce Knowles, and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, with their go-out-there-and-vote attitude, actually compelled kids to well, do just that!

Hey, that's good news!

Headed by Erica Austin, the study looked at the effects of celebrities encouraging young people in 2004 and found that 44% of newly registered voters were ages 18 to 25.

This year, about 44 million people aged 18-29 are eligible to vote on November 4th. If more than 50% of those young voters actually hit the polls, that would be the third largest young voter turn out since the voting age was lowered.

And now we're telling you (again): MAKE SURE TO VOTE!

Celebrities should tell people to vote, but not how to vote. People should decide how they vote on their own opinions and those of professionals whose jobs are to understand and analyze political policy. Celebrities are paid to sing, dance, act, and look pretty. So are you going to base your reason for voting for whomever on the opinion of somebody paid to look pretty or on the opinion of somebody paid to analyze politics and public policy. Hmmmmm. Hard choice. Bottom line to all you celebrities, please encourage people to vote but please keep your political opinions to yourself as you have no credibility. :)

if you vote, just be sure to actually be informed.

    Re: sweetpiece

I love how you keep posting this, yet you want people to vote for a man who has proven absolutley nothing in his dismal career except failure to chicago in education programs and many many other things. (I live in Chicago)
And also preaching class envy and telling already lazy Americans that they deserve other peoples hard earned wealth. Save your own damn money! Live within your means, stop having more kids you can't afford! Grow a fricking brain!!

Perez, this survey is predicated on a sample size of 305 people. The scope of this survey is so ridiculously small that its results can't be logically considered as indicative of a larger trend. These findings prove nothing.

  21. 21

    Re: SBFREAKSgirl925
yea……….all of us 'cool' people are one in the same….personally i think that sweetpiece douche is someone else though……..
    YEAH SWEETPIECE YOU FUCKING DOUCHE

  22. 22

    Re: SBFREAKSgirl925 – me too.

  23. 23

Did anyone ever think that maybe most newly registered voters are between 18 and 25 because you can't register to vote until you're 18??
And if you didn't register when you turned 18, if you go to college there are people all over the place telling you to register.
No, that can't be it.. too logical… It must be because P. Diddy said you should vote.

  24. 24

Re: sweetpiece – Jesus fucking Christ! I am happy you are so fucking passionate about not seeing McCain win but why don't you try letting them decide for themselves who they want to run the country instead of shoving your opinion down everyones throat like anyone actually cares/ would be influenced by YOU… PLEASE!

  25. 25

whoever votes for obama bc a bimbo celeb told them to is retarded.

no offence to the retards =/

  26. 26

Re: wanna milk me?? – i'll be here till 4:30 my time. then i gotta do the mommy thing. tuesday is dance night. 3 loooong hours!

    NOBOMA

  28. 28

    im voting :)

  29. 29

People need to read some books on economics that is for sure!

  30. 30

lmfao. i hate this "get out and vote" crap.
it's mainly aimed at young voters, and let's face it.
most young voters are complete idots.

people that need so much convincing to get out of their bed in the morning and drive 15 minutes to vote are not the kind i'd like in charge of the fate of this country, thanks.
and the fact that people can't make up their own minds and need some dumbass elitest airhead celebrity to do it for them really scares the hell out of me.

just because you're on tv, does not give you the right to tell me how i feel about the future of the country, sorry.

  31. 31

    MOOSEFUCKERS FOR MCCAIN UNITE!
JUST TRY TO CLEAN THAT BLOOD FROM UNDER YOUR NAILS.
    .
HOWL LIKE THE BITCHES YOU ARE! THE SHE BITCH WILL KILL YOU JUST LIKE SHE KILLS THE WOLVES IN ALASKA!
    .
    THE STAIN REMAINS MCCAIN

  32. 32

They dont influence me! Maybe if the cast of gossip girl asked me I would think about it!

  33. 33

I would prefer that celebs try to encourage individuals to read up on the issues not just from the media, but books, articles, anything to give an even perspective. This should not be about who the celeb is voting for since that makes it a popularity contest and there is so much more at stake then whether Hollywood likes someone.

  34. 34

And I'm sure for every 20 young people who register, 1 makes it to the polls to vote.

  35. 35

True Perez, but the average young voter doesn't know all of the facts. Look at the shit we are in now. Adults getting themselves into debt by fast talking loan companies and wanting everything NOW. Yes, it is good that the youth of today is interested in politics. But I pray they don't vote because
Lil' Wayne sez to vote "this way" or "that way".

  36. 36

No. I wish they wouldnt say who they like for pres. cuz , If I know a celb, not voting for OBAMA I no longer like them, too bad. OBAMA 08.

  37. 37

Get out and vote…yeah that's great and all but I have a message for the JoBro's…..please fire your stylist who tells you it's cute to show your camel toe while wearing super tight pants and boots. BOOTS for God's sake……….please FIRE YOUR STYLIST!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. 38

Go Cougs! I've already voted, good luck to all the candidates.

  39. 39

Let us hope they are using their brains and not just voting for who these celebrities tell them to vote for!!

  40. 40

    im so excited to vote
i turned 18 in august and i'm so happy that i can vote in the most historic election ever :)

The study said that 44% of newly registered voters were 18 to 25… that doesn't really say anything about celebrities influencing anyone. Young people are registering b/c they realize what America will be like if we don't.

Can Christina Aguillera influence anyone? Really? If she can, that's scary.

  44. 44

They MAKE THEM VOTE? What are these voters 5 year olds? No one makes them do anything!

  45. 45

I'm on my way to see Obama/Biden in my home town, Leesburg, on a field that housed wounded soldiers in 1861. Now, how astonishing is that considering 147 years ago he would have not been free to stand on that hill, let alone speak?
