Defrauding The Government?! Sexy Sarah Does Some Shady Travel

Sketchy Sexy Sarah, you're a sneaky one!
It's come to light that the Alaskan Governor has been charging the state for her children's travel and accommodations to events - some of which they were not invited to - and later altered the wording in her expense reports to suit the rules.
Great!!!!
Since taking office in December 2006, Palin has charged in total $21,012 for her three daughters' 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights, along with an occasional separate hotel room for the girls.
Alaskan law justifies footing the bill for anyone conducting "official" state business. Palin claims on expense reports that her daughters were specifically invited to events that required travel and accommodations.
And that's where things get a little shady!
Some organizers say Sarah sort of sprung Bristol, 17, Willow, 14, and Piper, 7 on them and others say that the Governor requested their presence in addition to her invitation. Still others say that the girls attended but didn't really do much of anything.
Sexy Sarah, ever the "hockey mom," says she likes to keep the kids close so she can spend more time with them. To which we ask, So where are the boys then, huh? 19-year-old Track and baby Trig? It's just a mite suspicious that she only brings her girls with her, don't you think?
So here's a rundown:
-Last year, Palin asked organizers of the New York Women's Leadership Conference if she could bring Bristol with her, and then charged $1385.11 in airfare and four nights at $707.29 a pop at the Essex House hotel overlooking Central Park…to Alaska, of course. What a nice state-supplied little vacation.
-In January, charged travel expenses for herself, Willow, and Piper to a the Alaska Symphony of Seafood Buffet in Anchorage to - we kid you not - "draw two separate raffle tickets." Very serious state business.
-In July Sexy Sarah dragged Bristol and Piper to Philadelphia for a National Governors Association meeting to the tune pf $2741.26, and then put them up in their own room at the Ritz-Carlton for five nights at $215.46 a night. She cited their purpose as "NGA Governor's Youth Programs and family activities." NGA spokeswoman Jodi Omear says the "Programs" are intended as, essentially, daycare.
-In February Palin requested an invitation for Piper to an American Heart Association luncheon in Fairbanks and then surprised organizers with not just one daughter, but all three! Organizers scrambled to alter table arrangements at the last minute while the little ladies shared their own room at the Princess Lodge for two nights, at $129 per night. Just before the luncheon the Palins greeted their father Todd at the finish line of the Iron Dog snowmobile race…conveniently located in Fairbanks. Hey look at that!
-Last year in February, Alaska flew the girls to Anchorage at $519.30 each to kick of the Iron Dog Race and wrote it off as "First Family official starter for the start of the Iron Dog race." That's so cute.
Three weeks before Senator John McCain completely lost his senses and plucked up Sarah for his running mate, she had expense records changed to include the words "First Family attending" and "First Family invited." Just some minor revisions, you know? Has a much nicer ring than oh, let's say, "blatantly using state money to go cavorting all over."
Know what's funnier? In 2006 Sarah made good on her promise to sell a private jet purchased by her predecessor. She sold the jet on eBay at a loss by the state. She could have used that jet to fly her little brood all over, which would have only cost the state per hour as opposed to individual airfare on commercial airlines.
Former Democratic governor of Alaska, Tony Knowles - who lost to Palin in 2006 - is the only other recent governor with school-aged kiddies during his office. And he disapproves.
"There was no valid reason for the children to be along on state business. I cannot recall any instance during my eight years as governor where it would have been appropriate to claim they performed state business."
We just want to know how much "official business" three kids under the age of 17 can actually perform.

Re: Billvie Bicks – I work for a non-profit that has a national presence; each state being represented. While bringing your child/children to events is not unusual, the attendee is to pick up the tab; not the government or tax payers.
Some ways that can create a legal savings for the family going to these events is if they are driving, either by renting a vehical or driving their own; if they can and will be all staying in the same room/accomadation made for the official attendee, and if there is a per diem set up front for food expenditures as they do not require receipts to be submitted.
I believe she has an ethical issue here and she knows it now and knew it then. It seems that she just considered these expenditures a "perk" as Governor. A wise instructor that i once had in a college ethics class gave two tests to use when trying to determine if something is the right thing to do or not. I think they are tests to live by. Firstly, if you a feel a need to justify an act the act is most likely wrong or unethical. Secondly, ask yourself "what would happen if everyone did the same act in question." For instance, what if everyone throws their litter on the ground versus what if everyone picked up a piece of litter when they go out.
Sarah's issue does not pass either test. While I think it is great she takes her kids with her and wants to be with them, she needs to do so on her dime; not the tax payers.

Palin is not bringing all of her kids along with her. For the most part, she is bringing her teenaged daughters with her, probably to hang out and shop. What about her older son? What about her baby? Guess they are only around when she is campaigning. She then showcases her boys so that she can be seen as "patriotic" and an advocate for special needs children.
The point isn't that perez is picking on her. The point is that she stands there and points her moralistic finger at everyone else. She calls herself a reformer - while she flashes around all the "great" ways she has reformed government she misuses her power and state funding in the background. She is not an outsider but appears to be a seasoned politician who knows how to manipulate the rules and hopes not to get caught.

It's not news to those who read different forms of media to get an unbiased opinion. You're correct when you say that Palin should spend time with her kids. She allegedly agrees with you, so she works from her home, instead of Juneau, and charges her state travel expenses to stay at home, which is a no no. I'd say that's real mavericky! People don't take issue with a mom spending time with her children. It's falsely documenting travel expenses while working from home and/or allocating funds for personal use, including her children's travel, which is disturbing. She should have just paid for the children's travel out of her own pocket and not altered the forms to give the impression that her children were invited to the events, which would make it legal. Palin's problem is that some of the event organizers have indicated they were shocked when she brought the children, as they were not invited nor required to be there. Now Sarah has to explain why she altered the documets with an "official family event" classification - when the events were not!

These examples, among other things that have recently come to light, really speak to character. Is this something to be concerned about? Taken individually, this doesn't seem to be too much of a big deal, but it certainly does establish a disturbing pattern that can't be ignored. It seems that Sarah is good at cutting costs when they don't involve her but it's a different matter when it comes to her making any personal sacrifices. If I lived in Alaska I'd certainly be asking for a public accounting of her expenses every month.

Yes, I will acknowledge there are some issues with Palin. However, she has been treated very unfairly and many people realize this. The baseless and often times sickening personal attacks against her family have delegitimized any other attacks that may have had merit. The sheer barrage of nonsensical and frequently untrue allegations against her have obscured any real missteps she's made, and further, they actually serve the opposite purpose… they have increased her popularity and made conservatives MORE pugnacious in defending her.
