Dirty Dancing All The Way To Broadway!

Nobody puts baby in the corner, unless you're taking her to the Great White Way. Then she'll be very happy!
The stage adaptation of Dirty Dancing - Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage - is planning to take on Broadway, taking over the Rialto venue that Hairspray is about to depart from.
Yay!!!
The production, which has existed since 2004, is based closely on the screenplay, and both were written by Eleanor Bergstein. The stage production contains all the songs that the film does in addition to some extra ones.
The production, however, is not a musical, because none of the actors sing.
The production has already been a smash hit, playing to sell out crowds in Germany, England, so it should do marvelously in New York.
Are you ready for the time of your life?

it won't be the same
hell yeah dirty dancing is the shiznitz!!
Don't you mean "Nobody puts Zac in the corner!"
It's awesome!!! Such a good night out!!! And the bit in the water with the lift was done so well!
haha yay I might see this if it's good
How lame
I don't want to burst any bubbles, but if this is the same production that opened in Australia a couple of years ago (looks like it is), anyone who loves the theatre should STAY AWAY. The highlights? Major dance sequences. Lowlights? Everything else. Canned music, audiences going whackadoodle every time a favorite line is uttered, and the single weirdest thing i've seen onstage - a panoramic screen at the top of the stage with 'scene setters' i.e gravel for the 'she's like the wind' scene, grass for the scene at the golf links and, my personal fave, a moving road for the car stuff - just in case the shell of a car they're sitting in didn't make it clear for you. Stay home, rent the movie and save your $100.
I saw this in London 2 years ago and it was 100% awful. Added in extra scenes that were pointless. Only good thing about it was the music
I just saw it 2 weekends ago in Chicago. This is my all-time favorite movie, and I was not disappointed. I'm going again next month! The set was awesome. There is some singing. The guy that plays Billy (Johnny's cousin) sings, as does one of the back up dancers. They were both REALLY good. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves the movie.
Seen it in Toronto and loved it going to see it again
I saw this in Toronto and it's so amazingly brilliant! However, you must see the movie first or it's hard to get into it, but what ruins it is the waiting for that famous line…."nobody puts Baby in a corner"
i love broadway musicals and dirty dancing so this promises to be soooo goood!!!!
YAY!
so princess perez
I believe someone has already mentioned this but it has been around for a loooong time in Canada, over a few years now. Good to hear it's going into the states though…it can not even compare to the movie, and it was a tad bit corny because there are some things about the movie you can't really put of stage…but still, if your a HUGE fan, you will enjoy it.
They do a musical version of it in Canada, sort of, with people singing the "Soundtrack parts". Namely, currently doing it in Toronto is our 3rd Canadian Idol, Melissa O'Neil.
the stage production is definitely not as good as the movie - it is WAY cheesier, actually - but it was great seeing the dancing live.
That's not totally true. A few of the actors sing.. but they are background actors. The actors that play the major characters never sing.
Weird. There was a Dirty Dancing in Toronto for a long time, but I thought it was a musical… I have a feeling it's the same play since I'm sure they couldn't get the rights for two very simular productions.
I'm surprised it took so long to get to Broadway! Hope it does well!!
I read the reviews here in Chicago, and while it sounds like it is good, I think it should stick to regional showcases. It really doesn't sound like it deserves to be on Broadway. Chris Jones (huge theater critic in Chicago) said that it is too much like the movie, not enough of a new version. That's what broadway needs, a recreation, not a word by word obsession.
xoxo
It actually opened in Toronto and has been playing to sold out crowds for quite a long time… it has been extended several times. While its NOT the movie… it is good. The extend scenes are not necessary but still its good and if you loved the movie you might be a bit disappointed. But remembers ITS NOT A MOVIE, its a play.
I've seen the movie over 500 times (yes I know, a bit obsessive some might say..) and the play that I saw in Chicago is almost word-for-word, the same as the movie. There are a few extra parts that weren't in the movie, nothing really special. The stage set up was very creative. Don't go into it expecting it to be just based on the movie and completely different. It's just the stage version of the movie. After I saw it on stage, my mom and I watched the movie the next day. The movie is obviously superior, but we all enjoyed the play. I wonder if Patrick Swayze has/will see it in Chicago, since he's been filming a tv show here lately. I'd love to hear what he thinks of it.
Except for the fact that Dirty Dancing will be replacing Hairspray at the Neil Simon theatre, not the Rialto. And it's not the only show to be rumored in this space.
Omg I saw this show in London Westend, the BEST show i've every seen!
It was freekin awsome!
Poor Broadway, the show is utter shite.
Cooool! As long as it's not as bad as the TV series from 1988 and the "Havana Nights" movie version!
We vacay in Lake Lure every year, it's beautiful there. This sounds like this would suck badly. No go.
i hate to say it, especially because i am a huge fan of the movie, but the stage show is just awful!!! i saw it in chicago and from about 5 minutes in i couldn't wait for it to be over…
Saw it in Toronto…soooooooo good!!!!!
Re: trixxxie15 – Are you a lincoln Park trixie? Then you would like this shit for shit "musical".
I saw this too and this was the worst piece of shit that I have seen in my life. Broadway will not take this and I can guarantee that this show will close in a month. This was the cheesiest show ever. Save your money! Don't see this!!!!
I just saw Dirty Dancing the musical on Tuesday….VERY disappointed. Though the dancing was amazing…the acting was cheesy and some of the scenery was tacky.
Save your $$ and see the movie, its pretty much identical.
Saw it in Toronto last year and it was great!!
Re: Reneesouflee – did u read what trixxie and tinkerbella just said? See your opionon sucks
so good!! its been playing here in toronto for a couple years now and its a huuge hit. so much fun:)
This show is f&cking amazing! yes the leads dont sing but its not a musical its the classic story on stage. If you enjoyed the movie you will love the show.
Anyone thats seen it will tell you that Johnny's body is wayyyyy better then patricks.
I had the time of my life
Hopefully it'll last longer than "Spamalot" and "Spring Awakening"…
