  1. 1

I cry bullshit - it's not EVEN on the same level.

  2. 2

    sad…

  3. 3

    wow

  4. 4

    Exactly

    not as extreme but right

  5. 5

I hope you're not equating the evil that was committed against African Americans in this country (segregation, having their homes burnt down, being burnt alive and hung from trees) to gays not being able to marry. If so that is absolutely sick.

  6. 6

    Interesting comparison.
I see it as pretty much the same thing.
Deny gays the right to get married, we might as well take away the women's right to vote and openly segregate black people again.

  7. 7

    VOTE FOR EQUALITY

  8. jefdo says – reply to this

    8

I'm not saying I'm against gay marriage, but that comparision seems quite extreme.

  9. 9

There is a difference between religious beliefs and discrimination. This photo does not apply to prop. 8

  10. 10

    Uhhh..

  11. 11

Um, what is this in regards to.

  12. rod says – reply to this

    12

    Stand for your rights!

  13. 13

    wtf

  14. 14

    wow…

everyone VOTE NO on PROP 8!

  15. 15

Umm…Are we reverting back to the 60s?

  16. 16

That's not even a remotely cool thing to compare prop 8 to. Are you seriously going to compare centuries of slavery, segregation, and just the general deprivation of basic human rights to gays not being able to marry? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for gay marriage and I think prop 8 is total bullshit, but last time I checked gays can still go to the same schools, move theaters, swimming pools, etc. as heterosexuals. And gays have the right to vote, whereas an overwhelming number of African Americans had been disenfranchised long after slavery was abolished. I'm sorry, but marriage vs. disenfranchisement and separate and unequal…Come on.

  17. 17

Who the hell would do something like that???? What state was that made for????

  18. 18

There are so many ways the two causes are different.

  19. 19

You're "Just Sayin'" and I'm just agreein'.
    Vote NO! on Prop Hate!

  21. 21

    Re: uhhuh1013 – That's actually a very good point.

  22. 22

Now you've gone too damn far, spare me with trying to say that this is on the same level as segregation. Being gay is a choice, being African-American isn't.

  23. mnm says – reply to this

    23

i call bullshit too..voting yes on prop 8

  24. 24

For you TARDS he's saying Yes on prop 8 is like bieng treated as 2nd class citizens……………..
    Sheeeeesh

  25. 25

This isn't minimizing the African American struggle.
This isn't equating religion beliefs and discrimination.

It's showing how separate but equal DOES NOT WORK.
    Not based on race.
    Not based on sexual orientation.
    Not based on ANYTHING.

    AMEN TO THIS!
    VOTE NO ON H8TE!

  26. 26

that comparison is completely off, perez. do not compare the two things.

  27. 27

I get the idea. It's an extreme comparison but, ya know, it's supposed to be. It sort of makes me think of how back then there are people who viewed this type of segregation to be acceptable and normal but, now wouldn't think of it. Maybe now we're seeing the same type of thing with gay marriage where people don't approve of it but, perhaps years from now they'll look back and realize how ridiculous that was…. if that makes any sense?

I think that is what this is trying to get at. Inequality under the law. Not to the same degree but, well, you know.

  28. 28

Word. This is the civil rights movement all over again.

  29. 29

Yuck Perez. No where near the same thing.

  30. 30

Re: tyleroakley – Exactly what I was trying to get at.

  31. 31

yeah thats kind of extreme. no one's taking away BASIC rights. i think anyone should be able to marry but geez no one's getting abused

  32. 32

Wow, you are an idiot for thinking it's even close to being the same thing.

    It's really outrageous.

  33. 33

"Are you seriously going to compare centuries of slavery, segregation, and just the general deprivation of basic human rights to gays not being able to marry?"

It was once the law that a black couldn't marry a white woman. And now, they're trying to change it so that two people of the same sex cannot marry.

I think it's the same. The point the image is trying to make is that we're going backwards, to a time where this type of discrimination was open and accepted. They recently got the license to marry, and now they're trying to take a step backwards.

Denying the right for gays to marry is a segregation from those who are privileged to marry, and those who are lawfully not allowed to. The image was about Black Vs White. Prop 8 is Hetero vs. Homo. Two extremes, so I don't think that the post above was unfair.

  34. 34

    YES ON 8!!!!

YOU GUYS CAN CRY AND BITCH ALL YOU WANT!!!!
8 IS GOING TO PASS, BELIEVE ME!!

YOU GUYS ARE ALL TWISTED AND POSSESED…I WILL PRAY FOR YOU!

  35. 35

Re: babyquasar – The picture above has nothing to do with religous beliefs.

  36. 36

I don't really understand the set up here. As long as a white person is not drinking at the same time, there really isn't anything physically wrong with the water that this poor guy is drinking. What kind of demented person made this thing?

your country is so fucked up that i feel bad for you guys.

    -canada

  37. 37

"This isn't minimizing the African American struggle."

Really? people being burnt alive and hung from trees, castrated, having dogs sicked on them, is equal to not being able to get married. You honestly don't see how that is minimizing what African Americans went through.

  38. 38

Hey all you nay sayers…it wasn't too long ago that a marriage between blacks n whites was illegal!

I believe that this comparrison is dead on!

How many more of our gays need to be brutally murdered before you quantify it in the same catagory!

It's never ok when it Us or Them…why can't it be We???

Be all inclusive of others…your lives might get more interresting!!!

  39. 39

this is kind of making a slippery slope argument… a little extreme. but hey, it's obviously catching peoples' attention… which is exactly what an effective ad is supposed to do.

  40. 40

    SEPARATE but EQUAL???
In today's society, HOW can WE do this to other humans.
Those who say it's not related…think. WHY would ANYONE treat any other person different.

NO to HATE. NO on 8

  41. 41

"For you TARDS he's saying Yes on prop 8 is like bieng treated as 2nd class citizens…………….."

African Americans were not only treated as second class citizens they were tortured with such things as castrations, being burnt alive and hung from a tree, having their homes burnt down, all kinds of evil.

  42. 42

Damn a lot of people commenting are looking way further into this than they need to. I really don't think he's that big of a douche bag, or a dumb ass, to compare the two the way some of you think…what I believe he's saying is discrimination is wrong.

    No on h8, yup.

  43. 43

Re: MissAvery – Oh god. You think being gay is a choice? Why would ANYONE choose to live a life of misery with people like you who do not accept them, get bashed on the regular, have some fundamental rights denied to them, and feel threatened for their life lest anyone who is a homophobe decide to take action upon them? WHY WOULD YOU "CHOOSE" that? You fucking moron.

  44. 44

"I believe that this comparrison is dead on!"

I agree burnt alive, castrated, and hung from a tree equals not getting married.

  45. 45

    Oh lord….here we go…

    I totally agree with XHOLLAX.

Yes, there is a point of a certain type of discrimination. But not nearly as extreme. The right for a person able to legally marry or not, does not equate to national segregation, physical harm, and certain people getting sprayed with fire hoses for walking down the street with "straight" people.

    Way to lose readers Perez….

  46. 46

    Re: babyquasar

Seperation of church and state mean anything to you…it does me!

Please don't impose your belief system on me…it's annoying, I don't go to your church for a reason!!!

I cannot stand people who hide their homophobia, prejudice and ignorance behind organized religeon.

    Hypocrits!!!

  47. 47

    Re: TwoGoofballs
    Oh really?

Giving someone something "separate but 'equal'" because of something they can't change…. sounds like the same level to me.

  48. 48

To all you people who say this isn't even on the same level..you are OUT OF LINE!! GAY people have faced persecution and oppression…it is all the same and NEVER OKAY!! Even if segregation of blacks has a violent, deep history on a much larger scale, in the end, ANY form of discrimination is WRONG!

  49. 49

"As a GAY American, lets begin to examine the facts…"

    Let's please do.

    Gays are allowed to vote.
Gays are not routinely burnt alive and hung from trees.
There has not been mass castrations of gays.
Gays are not marching through the streets for basic human rates while having dogs sicked on them.

  50. 50

    Re: xhollax
This is a picture of someone being "burnt alive, castrated, and hung from a tree"?

Hmm looks to me like it's someone being forced to drink out a second-rate water fountain because of something they can't change. Sounds like gays being forced to accept a second-rate "civil union" because of something they can't change.

  51. 51

Sorry Perez but on the 4th Im voting yes on Prop 8 I don't think gays should be allowed to get married. I have nothing against gays and I dont care if they move in and live with each other but I feel the constitution needs to be preserved and followed without making any changes to it.

And this comparison is way off. Not being able to marry is way different than racial segregation.

  52. 3l$@ says – reply to this

    52

omg no you didnt fags choose to be gay colored people dont :(

  53. 53

"In today's society, HOW can WE do this to other humans.
Those who say it's not related…think. WHY would ANYONE treat any other person different."

How can we denigrate the struggle of a group of people? Where do we get of comparing who's suffering more? Why can't the gay movement stand on it's own why do they have to inject others who want no parts. Why must they piss on african americans?

  54. Jic2c says – reply to this

    54

This isn't about which evil is worse. This is segregation. This pic isn't saying they're the exact same level on all degrees.

It's just saying that both deny human equality.

Both express that certain human beings don't deserve the same rights as other human beings because they are different from the majority.

    That's what it's "Just Sayin"

  55. 55

    Re: MissAvery

    What color are your eyes???

    What color is your skin???

You have curly or straight hair???

Just as you had no choice in all of these things, our gays had no choice!

    It's genetics…not a choice!

  56. 56

Sure, Prop 8 involves giving gays the right to marry, but its so much more than that- it's about equality. The right to marry is just one step towards equality for gays and lesbians. Gay, black and all minorities are targeted in hate crimes for the same reason- being different. Prop 8 is so much more than a proposition- it's a symbol. A symbol for equality among all men and women.

  57. 57

    Uh. No.

  58. 58

Re: 3l$@ – gay people don't choose to be gay you ignorant twat

  59. 59

I am ALL for No on Prop 8 When i see posters yes on prop 8 i want to kick that persons ass!. I live in Downtown Long Beach for go sake! But being black is NOTHING like being gay. Since I am black i could probably say that you cant hide your skin color but you can hide the way you feel. There are men & woman out there who do, do that! Its easier to hide being homosexual but not as easy as being black. And people please stop with the "african american" that means I was an immigrant from africa and came to america. I am black & thats it!

  60. jefdo says – reply to this

    60

Re: NO to HATE. NO on 8.
I'm not trying to say anything against your arguments, or prop 8, but what African American's went through is not comparable to prop 8. Gay men and women don't always get treated fairly, and that's unfortunate, but them not being allowed to marry is not the equivalent to having to use seperate water fountains and bathrooms. On two different levels. I'm not saying your beliefs are wrong, but Perez's comparison is.

  61. 61

    "I think it's the same."

Of course you do, you're not african american. You're family members weren't tortured and subjected to all kinds of evil.

  62. 62

WHOEVER believes that one CHOOSES to be gay needs to GO BACK TO SCHOOL.

Who would choose to be gay just to be treated unequally, discriminated, beat up? Who would CHOOSE that?

  63. 63

Re: mikeyjay – clearly you know nothing of the civil rights movement. water fountains, restrooms, neighborhoods restaraunts, even the back of the bus were not well kempt by our public works system. do you tink that water fountain was ever onced cleaned? no my friend. we are not backwards and don't you ever try and shit on our country when you know nothing about its history. instead of reading perez, you might want to open up a few history books…

  64. 64

Why isn't it on the same level. Prop 8 denies a group of people the fundamental right which is guaranteed in the bill of rights which is the pursuit of happiness. Saying that a group of people are not allowed to be married because they are different is inequality. Gay people have been killed and jailed in different countries and era's around the world. Discrimination is discrimination homosexuality like race is not something that you can control.

  65. 65

    Re: MissAvery
    You ignorant, ignorant lady.

  66. 66

i couldnt agree more with xhollax. I'm ALL for equal rights…but this comparison is severley misguided and sick. THIS extremism propoganda will only hurt the cause and that is sad…..shame on you for posting this perez. very bad judgement on your part.

  67. 67

Comparing the struggle of African-Americans in the 1960's to the modern gay rights movement is an insult. Are state troopers spraying firehoses into crowds at gay pride parades? Are homosexuals forced to use seperate bathrooms and schools? I'm not saying that Prop 8 is good, I'm just saying that this comparison is bullshit.

  68. 68

I get where you're going but, I think that comparison is a little extreme.

  69. 69

Okay maybe it seems extreme but I do see that people voting Yes on Prop 8 just simply can not accept gay people because of the hateful catch 22 in their faiths. People who vote yes on 8 arn't doing it to "protect marriage" PLEASE! If they cared about "protecting marriage" than maybe they should start in the divorce courts or in the Las Vegas chapels were people make horrible marital mistakes all the time. It's not about protecting marriage, it's about maintaining their word to their faith and they might as well put a sign out in the front yard that says "No Gays" . The motive is hateful and if only their faith will lead them to the shame they deserve.

  70. 70

Re: StratMan172 – you my friend do have a problem with gay people just by not giving them the opportunity to marry and also know nothing of the constitution. our founding fathers left that constitution up for interpretation, and the ability for it to be trimmed and altered over time. they knew that times were changing and that in the future, people would become more open to dfferent people. if we left the constitution the same, women and minorities would not have the right to vote…should we keep the constitution the same and leave them out? the constitution are written words. in my heart, i know that gay people are the same as you and me. ever since i was litttle i have wanted to marry, i cant imagine what it would feel like if i were unable to experience that because of how i was born.

  71. ??? says – reply to this

    71

It's exactly the same thing. you think people CHOSE to be gay? No. just like African Americans don't chose to be black. studies have shown that homosexuals are born that way. There aren't "influenced" by anyone, and allowing gay people to have the same rights won't "corrupt" our children. It will teach them EQUALITY. Just like the consitution said.."all men are created equal". It's sad that the government feels the need to involve themselves in people's personal lives. I wish people who discriminate would wake up and realize that they don't have to right to tell people how to live their life. You can't deny someone the same happy life all heterosexuals can have. In 50 years I hope prejudice against gay people will be looked upon as prejudice against black people. This breaks my heart, and i'm straight.

  72. 72

Remember when women could not vote?
Remember when african americans were slaves?
Remember when Whites cannot marry Chinese in California?
Let's make discrimination a thing of the past.
Time to move this country forward.
Everyone has the right to love and marry who they want! W
    What is wrong with that???

NO to HATE. NO on PROP HATE/8

  73. 73

Re: jefdo – I think the point that was trying to be made was that voting yes on Prop 8 is creating a second class citizen again, much like women were not allowed to vote, or the way the world was before the civil rights movement.

the image is a bit extreme, but if you really think about it, the fundamentals are the same. essentially, it's saying because of this characteristic you have, you're not equal and not deserving of the same rights as those who do not share that characteristic, as if the choice was even there.

women didn't choose their gender (not back then, at least, ha), but were second class citizens and weren't given the right to a voice.

african americans didn't choose their skin colour (except for michael jackson, but we'll leave him out of this.) but were second class citizens and weren't given the right to congregate with people who had white skin.

homosexuals do not GENERALLY choose their orientation, but they're second class citizens who don't have the right to be as miserable as straight married couples.

at the end of the day, we're all humans and deserve to have the same rights as one another.

defiling the sanctity of marriage? heard of divorce?
    no on prop 8.

  74. 74

YALL ARE ACTING LIKE PEOPLE ARE TELLING YOU THAT YOU CANT BE GAY!!! HELLOOO BE GAY ALL U WANT!!

  75. 75

Re: xhollax – i am african american. please do not speak for all african americans. perez was not saying that he beleives his struggles are the same as our people, but he is saying that almost fifty years later, it is the same bull shit. it is the same in the sense that people are still trying to discriminate against a group of peope who are just trying to live their lives. i think that is something you and i know a thing or two about.

  76. 76

    Listen.
    Both situations sucked/sucks royally..
But Perez posted this picture to equate the two situations.
Homosexuals gaining the right to marry vs. African Americans gaining ( back then) the right to vote, work, EAT, SIT, LIVE, in the same area as "white people".

I'm a future voter of NO on Prop 8 for the record, but we shouldn't bash others or compare their ethnic history's to prove or disprove peoples points.

  77. 77

Re: Shawn Suarez – Idiot noone said you couldnt be GAY

  78. 78

Marriage came from GOD. In the bible it clearly states that gays are not supposed to be together. DUH.

  79. 79

"Why isn't it on the same level. Prop 8 denies a group of people the fundamental right which is guaranteed in the bill of rights which is the pursuit of happiness. "

One marriage is not a right you will find that anywhere in the constitution. 2 are you serious. you don't understand the difference between evil, torture, death and not BEING ABLE TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE.

"which is guaranteed in the bill of rights which is the pursuit of happiness."

banging animals makes me "happy" do I have a constitutional right to do that. don't be stuipid.

  80. 80

Well, black people weren't allowed to marry white people in this country not too long ago. The comparison is that ALL discrimination is wrong. Its absolutely on the same level.

Anyone who thinks gays should not have the same rights as the rest of us is just as bad as any segregationist.

  81. 81

    Re: xhollax
    I'm Jewish.

    I think it's the same.

Or does it not count that my family was "tortured and subjected to all kinds of evil" because they're not black?

  82. 82

    Re: tyleroakley

you can argue the PRINCIPLE all you want. Most of the people who already are VOTING NO already get that. This advertisement is NOT targeted towards them. It is targeted towards the swing voters and it STRIKES an emotional cord that is TOO EXTREME to push on people that obviously favor moderation. Im just saying this campaign poster is not going to help the undecided VOTE AGAINST.

  83. 83

Re: babyquasar – I agree there is a difference between religious beliefs and discrimination.

however country is not supposed to be religious. Separation of church and state…at least that's how it is supposed to be. We should not allow one's religious beliefs to be imposed on the lives of others.

  84. 84

"It's exactly the same thing. you think people CHOSE to be gay? No. just like African Americans don't chose to be black. "

The EXACT SAME THING? are gays allowed to vote? when was the last time there were mass lynchings of gays? please do not spit in the face of african americans who had to fight for every single right they have. I'm hoping your just ignorant and oblivious to the history of this country and not really a sick human being.

  85. 85

' i am african american. please do not speak for all african americans. "

I am african americanas well and I speak for no one but myself

  86. 86

THIS IS SO OUT OF TOUCH…NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING EQUAL. YOU ARE MAKING FUN OF BLACKS WITH THIS. I SEE…SELL OUT THE NIGGAS FOR GAY RIGHTS……..

  87. 87

    Re: afromama
There is a HUGE difference between between being able to get married and being deprived basic human rights. I recognize the idea he was trying to get at, but his tactics were all wrong. This would be an appropriate comparison if prop 8 were trying to deprive homosexuals basic human rights, such as voting, being able to go to school, being denied medical care at hospitals, and so on. Read "Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency" by Doug McAdam, a book about how the Civil Rights Movement finally came to be and how difficult it was to start such a movement, and then get back to me. And for those of you saying gays face just as much discrimination such as getting kicked out of school for being gay, look at the facts. The only schools that have kicked people out for being homosexual are religious schools. Public schools, by law, cannot kick out gays. Heck, they can't even kick out undocumented immigrants even though they technically are not protected under the Constitution.

  88. 88

It is best to support all causes that suppress any group or individual. It will make our lives better, more open, more free, more joyful and satisfying. Everyone will be treated as a human being should be treated… with RESPECT…

  89. 89

this analogy isn't about race or sexual preference… it is not comparing the two…

it's about having the same rights as everyone else.

  90. 90

yes this pictures is extreme, i agree.
but to the idiot who said "you can't choose to be african american, you CHOOSE to be gay," go read a book before you come on here spreading these lies. sexual attraction is a BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL reaction in your brain. so you cannot "choose" to be gay or straight.
and to the people going off about religion: we are supposed to have a separation of church and state. that's what our country is founded on. why should another person have to live by the rules of YOUR religion instead of their own?

i don't mean to sound mean, but there are just too many closeminded, uninformed people in this country. it makes me crazy.

  91. 91

    "I'm Jewish.
    I think it's the same."

I know you do. You were not on the receiving end of these evils and therefore have no problem diminishing it But as a Jew would you like it if Perez had put up a picture of a gas chamber?

  92. 92

Re: *_* Face – and i will pray for you

  93. 93

Ummm I understand what you're trying to say…. but racism and marriage rights are not comparable.

  94. 94

Re: heatherb0828 – but not everyone follows the bible

  95. 95

obviously the situation isn't exactly the same, that's why there's things called metaphors - the concept of 'separate but equal' and denying individuals basic civil rights based on arbitrary standards is EXACTLY the same…RIGHT ON

  96. 96

Re: TwoGoofballs – Thank you for that immediate voice of reason.

Don't minimize the cause, Perez, by trying to draw this parallel…you will diminish your support.

    It's just NOT the same.

  97. 97

THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL PEOPLE…PEREZ HAS MADE A BOLD STMT…HE DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THE NON-GAYS OR GAYS.
    .
    .
YOU NASTY BUTT FUCK..YOU HAVE PLAYED THE DEMS AND MADE FUN OF THE REPS..YET YOU VOTED REPUBLICAN BECAUSE YOU MAKE OVER $250,000 A YR… YOU FUCKEN FRAUD!!!

  98. 98

    exactly
the reason for gays not being able to marry is racism.

"Just Sayin'", Prez. Well, let's play the game of "just saying." Just say I am a anglo female who got married in a church in front of the eyes of God and all of my relatives. Just hypothetically speaking, lets say I then got pregnant and had a baby in my arms. I would cradle that baby and love it with my husband right by my side. Homosexuality can be tolerated in public and in the work place, but it is not normal. It is completely natural for a female to be attracted to a male, and for males to be attracted to females. It is even understandable for some people to go thru "phases" where they may be sexually involved with the same sex to test their waters at a young age; I've been there. But everyone wants to suger coat the homosexual thing and make it sound so natural and friendly. It is not. And never in a million years will be. Let me take an apple and redefine it to an orange. Let me take an orange and redefine it to an apple. You can't do that. The definition of marriage for thousands upon thousands of years, since the beginning of civilization, has always been between a man and a (sometimes plural) woman. Period. You can't redefine a word. Find another word to describe your union, but don't use marriage and ruin it for the rest of us.

    Oh hell no.
You have to be kidding me.
It is not even CLOSE to the same thing.
Stop acting like such a victim, no one is making you use another bathroom or take away your voting rights, and you have no right to compare yourself to segregation.
You are shaming the struggle of other races by doing so.
