It was once the law that a black couldn't marry a white woman. And now, they're trying to change it so that two people of the same sex cannot marry.
I think it's the same. The point the image is trying to make is that we're going backwards, to a time where this type of discrimination was open and accepted. They recently got the license to marry, and now they're trying to take a step backwards.

Sure, Prop 8 involves giving gays the right to marry, but its so much more than that- it's about equality. The right to marry is just one step towards equality for gays and lesbians. Gay, black and all minorities are targeted in hate crimes for the same reason- being different. Prop 8 is so much more than a proposition- it's a symbol. A symbol for equality among all men and women.
I am ALL for No on Prop 8 When i see posters yes on prop 8 i want to kick that persons ass!. I live in Downtown Long Beach for go sake! But being black is NOTHING like being gay. Comparing the struggle of African-Americans in the 1960's to the modern gay rights movement is an insult. Are state troopers spraying firehoses into crowds at gay pride parades? There is a HUGE difference between between being able to get married and being deprived basic human rights. I recognize the idea he was trying to get at, but his tactics were all wrong. This would be an appropriate comparison if prop 8 were trying to deprive homosexuals basic human rights, such as voting, being able to go to school, being denied medical care at hospitals, and so on. Read "Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency" by Doug McAdam, a book about how the Civil Rights Movement finally came to be and how difficult it was to start such a movement, and then get back to me. The only schools that have kicked people out for being homosexual are religious schools. Public schools, by law, cannot kick out gays. Heck, they can't even kick out undocumented immigrants even though they technically are not protected under the Constitution.

Sorry Perez but on the 4th Im voting yes on Prop 8 I don't think gays should be allowed to get married. I have nothing against gays and I dont care if they move in and live with each other but I feel the constitution needs to be preserved and followed without making any changes to it.

How can we denigrate the struggle of a group of people? Where do we get of comparing who's suffering more? Why can't the gay movement stand on it's own why do they have to inject others who want no parts. Why must they piss on african americans?

Sure, Prop 8 involves giving gays the right to marry, but its so much more than that- it's about equality. The right to marry is just one step towards equality for gays and lesbians. Gay, black and all minorities are targeted in hate crimes for the same reason- being different. Prop 8 is so much more than a proposition- it's a symbol. A symbol for equality among all men and women.

Gay men and women don't always get treated fairly, and that's unfortunate, but them not being allowed to marry is not the equivalent to having to use seperate water fountains and bathrooms. Why isn't it on the same level. Prop 8 denies a group of people the fundamental right which is guaranteed in the bill of rights which is the pursuit of happiness. Saying that a group of people are not allowed to be married because they are different is inequality. Gay people have been killed and jailed in different countries and era's around the world. Discrimination is discrimination homosexuality like race is not something that you can control.

Comparing the struggle of African-Americans in the 1960's to the modern gay rights movement is an insult. Are state troopers spraying firehoses into crowds at gay pride parades? Are homosexuals forced to use seperate bathrooms and schools? I'm not saying that Prop 8 is good, I'm just saying that this comparison is bullshit.
I get where you're going but, I think that comparison is a little extreme.
Okay maybe it seems extreme but I do see that people voting Yes on Prop 8 just simply can not accept gay people because of the hateful catch 22 in their faiths. People who vote yes on 8 arn't doing it to "protect marriage" PLEASE! If they cared about "protecting marriage" than maybe they should start in the divorce courts or in the Las Vegas chapels were people make horrible marital mistakes all the time. It's not about protecting marriage, it's about maintaining their word to their faith and they might as well put a sign out in the front yard that says "No Gays" . The motive is hateful and if only their faith will lead them to the shame they deserve.

the image is a bit extreme, but if you really think about it, the fundamentals are the same. essentially, it's saying because of this characteristic you have, you're not equal and not deserving of the same rights as those who do not share that characteristic, as if the choice was even there.
women didn't choose their gender (not back then, at least, ha), but were second class citizens and weren't given the right to a voice.
african americans didn't choose their skin colour (except for michael jackson, but we'll leave him out of this.) but were second class citizens and weren't given the right to congregate with people who had white skin.
homosexuals do not GENERALLY choose their orientation, but they're second class citizens who don't have the right to be as miserable as straight married couples.

There is a HUGE difference between between being able to get married and being deprived basic human rights. I recognize the idea he was trying to get at, but his tactics were all wrong. This would be an appropriate comparison if prop 8 were trying to deprive homosexuals basic human rights, such as voting, being able to go to school, being denied medical care at hospitals, and so on. Read "Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency" by Doug McAdam, a book about how the Civil Rights Movement finally came to be and how difficult it was to start such a movement, and then get back to me. And for those of you saying gays face just as much discrimination such as getting kicked out of school for being gay, look at the facts. The only schools that have kicked people out for being homosexual are religious schools. Public schools, by law, cannot kick out gays. Heck, they can't even kick out undocumented immigrants even though they technically are not protected under the Constitution.
It is best to support all causes that suppress any group or individual. It will make our lives better, more open, more free, more joyful and satisfying. Everyone will be treated as a human being should be treated… with RESPECT…

It is even understandable for some people to go thru "phases" where they may be sexually involved with the same sex to test their waters at a young age; I've been there. But everyone wants to suger coat the homosexual thing and make it sound so natural and friendly. It is not. And never in a million years will be. Let me take an apple and redefine it to an orange. Let me take an orange and redefine it to an apple. You can't do that. The definition of marriage for thousands upon thousands of years, since the beginning of civilization, has always been between a man and a (sometimes plural) woman. Period. You can't redefine a word. Find another word to describe your union, but don't use marriage and ruin it for the rest of us.
