NYC Laws Overturned So Billionaire Mayor Can Run For Office 3rd Time

third-time__opt.jpg

Is he really that confident that he'll win a third time????

Power hungry New York City mayor and former Wall Street trader, Michael Bloomberg, was granted his wish.

It looks like the billionaire was able to convince the New York City Council to overturn a rule that limited one person serving as mayor to 2 terms, 8 years.

The new 'rule' now says someone can hold the mayoral spot for 12 years.

Interesting, we've previously mentioned that two-thirds of the council are also in their second terms of office.

We smell self preservation votes!

Mayor Bloomberg released this statement immediately after the decision was rendered:

"Today, the majority of the City Council decided to give the people of New York a fuller choice in the November, 2009 election. I believe that was the right choice, and I want to thank Speaker Quinn for her leadership. Those of us who work on both sides of City Hall must now move forward with the important decisions that face us, particularly finding ways to soften the fallout from the economic downturn and balancing our budget as revenues decline. We have a lot of work to do together to get New York through these tough times."

We think power makes people extra hungry!

well, he'll at least get Regis Philbin's vote.

  2. 2

Where's the pix of Trump felching him?

  3. 3

i think he should just buy the city….you know what they say about pride in ownership……win win

  4. 4

That's kinda scary - only time will tell how it turns out.

  5. 5

I live in NYC and I am appalled at this. There is a reason we have term limits, so we do not create a dictatorship. This is bullshit!

  6. 6

This isn't interesting. If we want to read about this shit, we'll go to CNN.

  7. 7

Can you imagine of Bush was allowed to run another term and won? This is bullshit!

  8. 8

Hey Perez, as a New Yorker I know for a fact that many New Yorkers really like Bloomberg, and feel that none of the other candidates were any good. We wanted him, and trust that during the election if the majority of New Yorkers are pissed off that his term limit was stretched that they won't vote for him, but I think he'll win.

  9. 9

well then maybe his hubris will cause him to lose. karma baby karmaaa

  10. 10

What?! Didn't he want to prevent Giuliani from serving beyond his second term (directly after 9/11/01)?????

  11. 11

I find the hypocrisy of his statement to be bordeline comical….it wasn't that long ago that Bloomberg himself denounce support for any change in the laws that would extend the term of a govenor in NYC….my my, how quickly we forget

  12. 12

Is this what Sarah Palin is going to do if McCain wins and drops dead? That bitch will prob change laws and the constitution to make herself the dictator of the United States!

  13. 13

Where's your news about Aniston and Mayer getting engaged?

  14. 14

I'm not from New York - buy this is bullshit!

  15. 15

    Hooray for Heimie Town!

  16. 16

Please dear God don't let this happen in California. We cannot handle another term of Govenator Schwarzenegger!!

perez, you are so close-minded! bloomberg is one of the best mayors new york has EVER had and would be an incredible president! so you hate him because he's rich? do you hate all rich people? and 'former wall st trader' - maybe, but also the founder of one of the largest financial news channels/corporations - bloomberg - heard of it? he also works for FREE!! you have too much influence on the youth of america to be saying that he is greedy. PLEASE check your facts.

  18. 18

ya fucking know what…………if they didn't keep rudy in after 9/11 this is total and complete BULLSHIT

oh wait, HE doesn't live there!!!

  20. 20

He may be power hungry, but he's not doing a bad job and he doesn't accept a salary. I'm okay w. him.

WE'LL HAVE A KRAUT PRESIDENT NEXT!

  24. 24

Oh please, Perez. Do you live in New York? Shut the fuck up. He's done A LOT for this city and he will certainly get my vote next year. Dictatorship? Other candidates will be able to run and if people are THAT angry, they just won't vote for him…but he will win…because he deserves it. Fuck off lol

  25. 25

I'm not sure how I feel about extending tern limits, but Bloomberg has been a great Mayor. He is tough, but is diplomatic. He is a self made man and knows about the economy. I think he would have made a better president than either of the two candidates currently running.

Politicians are like diapers. They need to be changed frequently. That's why we need a president now that didn't vote with Bush 90+% of the time.

    OHIO FOR OBAMA!!

    28

This really really should have been put on a ballot. Sounds like something out of a Chavez or Castro government.

  29. 29

Personally I think there is no one better to hold office than someone that is already filthy rich. For one, you know they aren't doing it for the money or prestige. Second, you know bribes won't mean a damn thing to them. And 3rd, anyone with that much money that volunteers to run for an office that will make him work his butt off, has GOT to be respected. How many people with that kind of money would lay around in a mansion or on a beach somewhere and tell the world to fuck off?

  30. 30

well- as a New Yorker who works on wall, i'd like to keep Bloomberg. I think his business ethics will benefit this crumbling economy, I listened to his reasoning behind this political action on WOR 710 AM with John Gambling and I agree with most of what he said. I mean he's definitely not in it for the money since his annual salary is $1.

Plus, La Guardia and Koch both overturned NY legislation to run for a third term when the city was in distress…I think this is a good move for the city…although I could do without th same council next term.

  31. 31

I live in New York and think this was a good idea. I happen to like Mayor Bloomberg and considering he has knowledge of Economics to a beneficial extent, this is a good move. He's not power hungry. People having been trying to get him for a few years to do this but he was opposed until the economic crisis started to get somewhat threatening. I do believe in term limits but that does not mean it is bad to bend the rules everyonce in a while if it is beneficial.

  32. 32

Re: ivy11 – 17-it doesn't matter whether Bloomberg was the best or worst governor ever to exist, the point of term limits is to keep from having a dictatorship-like society aka, anti-democratic….even though this new law doesn't automatically mean he will win, I do think it leaves a sour taste in peoples' mouth as to how "flexible" these laws are becoming; what next??

  33. 33

Does it really matter what you think, you don't even live in NY.

  34. 34

Re: nikkigurl – whoops, i mean Mayor…i guess after watching CNN and MSNBC all day with the Gov. Palin coverage, the position was stuck in my head lol

  35. 35

Re: sumone – I'm not from NYC, but I do live about 20 mins away from the closet borough on Long Island and I have to say, I don't really dig the hikes in fees for people coming into NYC that he's already passed and further hikes he's proposed….so even though someone isn't able to vote in the election, they may be affected (esp. when you think about all those who commute daily from NJ, CT, LI, and bordering NY counties), so having an opinion shouldn't be a problem in my eyes

  36. 36

I'm sure you would know alot about power making people more hungry. so what happened to your "diet"?

PROOF POSITIVE THAT MONEY BUYS ANYTHING. IF YOU'RE RICH ENOUGH, YOU CAN GET ANYTHING YOU WANT.

  40. 40

its soo not a power hunger thing.. im from nyc and bloomberg is without a doubt one of the great leaders of the city, even better than guiliani!!

    go BLOOMBERG =)

  41. 41

Just for the record, Bloomberg's policies have not been that popular. He's really not you're average politician. In fact, he isn't one, he's a business man. Regardless, he does what needs to be done instead of opting for bullshit policy that doesn't do anything for us. Government needs more people like Mayor Bloomberg.

  42. MP says – reply to this

    42

I don't believe in this. We have term limits for a reason. If someone wants to change the term limits (Mayor Bloomberg) it should be put up for a referendum for the people to vote on. If they decide to suspend term limits so Mayor Bloomberg can run again, so be it. I understand why some people would want the mayor to stick around, given his business acumen.

  43. 43

that's ridiculous. I hope he loses.

  44. 44

"Power Hungry"??? If the people of New York don't want to see him for a third term, then they won't vote for him.

If he wasn't popular he wouldn't have won TWICE.

stfu perez, have you ever been to nyc to do anything other than party? what do you know about new yorkers!

  45. 45

i was born, raised, live and plan on dying in nyc. and by the city i mean in manhattan. i am disgusted by this decision! how flexible are these laws? first of all… there are many native ny'ers that do not like bloomie not negating the fact that many ny'ers do. i think bloomberg with pataki's help has made the city unattainable unless u are rich. it has driven the artists out (or at least into brooklyn) and has made this town more of a mall. The MAWLING of America, but that notwithstanding.. If he would win a 3rd term or not.. it's a crazy decision…we have these terms in place for a reason… for those who argue the city is in need…
i remember after 911…the city was in need… rudy wanted a 3rd term… and bloomers was very much against that… hmmm at that time rudy would have won and bloomie would be on his first term.. point is..NYC can and will survive and thrive with or without bloomers..cause it”s finest point is that it is always changing.. and it is a town that lands on it's feet. always!

    Anthony Weiner for Mayor '09.

  48. 48

NYers love him! And he works for $1! Can't beat that! ;)

  49. 49

Re: Milkie – Love this. Well said!! NY is a city with heart, through all adversity!!

  50. 50

Like him or not, this is a slippery slope. Term limits should be in place for all elected officials. This stinks. We should have term limits for US Senate and US House.

  51. 51

What a douche. Another anti-second amendment creep in power. Thank the stars I don't live in NYC. For those of you who do: I'm so, so, sorry.

  52. 52

I think that term limits are silly. I think the voters ARE the term limiters!!! My friends and relatives in NYC like him. They think Bloomberg is a good, sensible mayor and he is not into BS. Plus he has more money then God so he isn't going to steal and he won't let other people steal. He's a good manager. Why shouldn't they let him run and probably win again. Look at it this way. If we didn't have term limits, Bill Clinton could have run for a third term and there would have been no Bush, and no nasty Supreme Court justices like Alito and Roberts and there would be a better economy and a better environment and healthcare. The market would not have crashed and we wouldn't be in the middle of a mess in the Middle East.

  53. 53

    GOOD FOR HIM.

  54. 54

American taxpayers just lay down and accept whatever the corrupt politicians do in their self-serving service to the public anyway, so just suck this up too.
    ~..~

  55. 55

Living in NYC, i gotta say that Bloomberg is an amazing mayor, and the only politician I trust. I find myself wishing he were president, so I could get a clear understanding of what's going on financially in the country….. Bush gets up to speak, and I tune him out - he's either lying or too dumb to know what to tell me. Bloomberg is smart, and tells things straight up.

  56. 56

i rang up his groceries once. he's much shorter than you'd expect. :)

  57. 57

I find it questionable that its this easy to overturn the time limit. However; Bloomberg still has to be elected, so its up to the people of NY.

  58. 58

I JUST WATCHED THE VIDEO ON THE SIDE THAT IS A MUST SEE BEFORE THE 4TH.

    PLEASE, EVERYONE WATCH IT.

it IS a must see….and not just before the 4th!

  60. 60

And they talk about Africa's dictators holding onto power … Bloomberg looks like one in the making …

  61. breal says – reply to this

    61

    Re: ivy11
I'm not talking about voting for him in an election. Voters voted for term limits and they should be the ones to overturn it it they want, by a referendum. 89% of New Yorkers said it should have been handled that way.

  62. 62

I live in NY and I will NOT vote for him.

  63. 63

As a New Yorker, I know Bloomberg has done some great things and is very popular. He also takes no salary for the job. If he wants another term I think it's great.

  64. 64

    Re: Flopper

Also, as a NY resident, I agree. We like him and he's done right by us. Perez is on the complete opposite side of the country, though. It's not expected he'd understand local politics.

  65. 65

    This is sooo wrong.
Voters made this law, who is he to be above it?
There are a few laws I'd like to be above - I just don't have a commission in my pocket to say it's OK.
Why would anyone bother voting for anything in NYC anymore - their vote clearly doesn't count.

  66. 66

While I'm no Republican by any stretch of the imagination, if I were Rudi Gulianni, I'd be screaming WHAT THE FUCK!!!! Gotta wonder why it wasn't ok for him, but is ok for Bloomberg.

Sounds like greasy pockets to me…..Who's starting the investigation?

  67. 67

Yes, he'll win. He is a phenomenal mayor. He did wonders for NY's economy after 9/11. We have a very low crime rate compared to most cities in the world, especially compared to LA or Chicago. Yes, Chicago will probably be the murder capitol of the country with the highest sales tax in the country. How proud Mayor Daley must be!

  68. 68

Re: grenade – I'm a New Yorker and we hate Rudy. Nobody wanted him to run a thrid term. Bloomberg is amazing and we all want him as our Mayor.

  69. Damn says – reply to this

    69

Born and Bred in NYC..I saw a commercial a couple of months back for some yahoo I never heard from trying to run for mayor based on the fact that he was a dishwasher and a bartender and it freaked me out. I for one and glad Bloomberg who in my not so humble opinion has been a good mayor will have the opportunity to stick around during this time…. if that's what the people of NYC want.

  70. 70

Disgusting example of abusive power gluttony. The 2 term limit was imposed by referendum vote, so they should put the 3rd term expansion to a vote as well.

But F-NYC, anyway. John Rocker was on the money about that shit hole.

  71. 71

    Re: WakeUpPeople

Bush's administration vs. Bloomberg's? Nice analogy. You're retarded. Mike has been an excellent mayor - sure he's got a huge ego, but his policies have been progressive and genuinely helped the City. Not to mention, the last time I checked, he still needs to be elected by the people he serves as Mayor…so yeah, that's pretty much the definition of a dictatorship. Moron.

  72. 72

    Re: Marco Pervo

What backwoods swamp are you from?

  73. 73

I LOVE BLOOMBERG ! He's fab. If that law ever had to be overturned, it couldn't have been for a more fitting Mayor !
